Our Verdict
Lay all the columns side by side and Risk of Rain 2 turns out to be a game with a crystalline sense of self. It knows exactly who it's for and what it owes them, and it delivers on that promise almost to the letter.
The scores agree, and the agreement is the story
Start with the cold figures: 85 on Metacritic, 86 on OpenCritic with a recommendation rate north of 93% and a Mighty rating, and a 93% positive score on Steam across roughly 236,000 reviews. IGN handed it a 9; ScreenRant and 3DM both settled on an 8. East or West, critic or player, the verdict lines up — it may not top every individual category, but as a whole it is nearly impossible to fault for completeness or staying power.
That consensus isn't luck. The game nails one thing to the wall: it makes getting stronger feel both exhilarating and strategic. You can feel your arc from weakling to wrecking-ball in every single run, and you keep making meaningful choices under the clock's thumb. And the high marks have aged well — plenty of games sprint to a launch-window score on hype, but this one held its standing high from Early Access through 1.0 and on through multiple expansions. That kind of long-term stability is its own proof of quality, and it's the rarer kind: a verdict that strengthened with time rather than curdling once the launch glow faded.

Who should buy it, who shouldn't, and which version to grab
This isn't a game for everyone, so sort yourself out before you commit. It suits one player above all: someone who likes co-op looting with up to three friends, who relishes stacking items until they're a meat grinder, and who doesn't mind that every run starts from zero and last run's god-build dies with you. If that's you, this becomes a game you keep coming back to.
Flip it around. If you want a permanent progression save, recoil from randomness, can't stand a clock forever nipping at your heels, or only play linear, story-driven adventures, this will most likely chafe. Its joy is built on accepting the random and embracing the restart; demanding a linear ride from it only ends badly for both of you. Knowing your own taste matters more than any score — this is not a game that bends to win you over, but for the people it's built for, it is close to irreplaceable. On versions, the advice is simple: the base game plus the first expansion, Survivors of the Void, is the most complete way in — its additions to characters, enemies and items are the meatiest and its reputation the steadiest. Leave Seekers of the Storm for after you've settled into the core. Step back far enough and the standing is plain: this is a landmark of the 3D action-roguelike, nominated for Indie Game of the Year and Excellence in Multiplayer at the 2021 SXSW Gaming Awards, and still uncopied in the way it locks time, items and difficulty into one loop. Against the narrative path of Hades, the two hold separate hills and neither replaces the other — Hades wins on the warmth of its people, this on the difficulty clock you come to love and dread. That, in the end, is why nothing has taken its place.

Don't play this game at night Risk of Rain 2 is so addictive that I do not recommend to play this game at night. You always launch a "last run" and you end up at 4AM. This game did ♥♥♥♥ up my sleeping schedule more than Netflix. Amazing job, with a great balance between new content based on what the community want and new content from their hands with regular updates. Basically a 3 man's studio being more professional than much larger studio slot machines.Show moreShow less
Used to be one of my favorite games. Spent countless nights playing with friends. Despite the repetitive game loop, it never seemed to get old. Adding mods into the mix made it fresh again if it did, and helped mitigate the dubious changes and somewhat sloppy updates over the years. This most recent line of updates and the ToS change is the last straw though. I can tolerate amateurish devs making broken updates and DLC, but I'm not agreeing to forced arbitration, uninstalling my mods, not will I abide them installing spyware on my pc. A brief rundown of the ToS changes making the rounds: Important Info in Terms of Service: • Mods of all kinds are a bannable offense • Display of Cheats/Exploits is bannable • Forced arbitration clause and a waiver of class action and jury trial rights for all users residing in the United States and any other territory other than Australia, Switzerland, The United Kingdom, or The Territories of The European Economic Area • You can be banned for using a VPN while connecting to online servers • Cannot access game content on a Virtual PC Collected Data Types: • Identifiers / Contact Information: Name, user name, gamertag, postal and email address, phone number, unique IDs, mobile device ID, platform ID, gaming service ID, advertising ID (IDFA, Android ID) and IP address • Protected Characteristics: Age and gender • Commercial Information: Purchase and usage history and preferences, including gameplay information • Billing Information: Payment information (credit / debit card information) and shipping address • Internet / Electronic Activity: Web / app browsing and gameplay information related to the Services; information about your online interaction(s) with the Services or our advertising; and details about the games and platforms you use and other information related to installed applications • Device and Usage Data: Device type, software and hardware details, language settings, browser type and version, operating system, and information about how users use and interact with the Services (e.g., content viewed, pages visited, clicks, scrolls) • Profile Inferences: Inferences made from your information and web activity to help create a personalized profile so we can identify goods and services that may be of interest • Audio / Visual Information: Account photos, images, and avatars, audio information via chat features and functionality, and gameplay recordings and video footage (such as when you participate in playtesting) • Sensitive Information: Precise location information (if you allow the Services to collect your location), account credentials (user name and password), and contents of communications via chat features and functionality.Show moreShow less
>Playing Mul-T, the Character with a minigun. >Gain an item that doubles my damage but halves my health >gain explosives shots on my minigun; Every bullet now explodes on contact >gain +40% attack speed on my explosive double damage minigun >Gain an active item that gives me 100% crit chance for 5 seconds >Shred bosses in seconds with my 100% crit chance explosive double damage high speed minigun. >Gain 8 will o the wisps, which make enemies explode when they die. >45 minutes into the run, I hit max difficulty with exactly 666 health. >summon teleporter boss; but since it's max difficulty it summons 4 of them instead. >Activate Crits >Takes 3 seconds to kill first boss, he explodes, the explosion is so powerful all 3 of the other bosses die. >4 bosses explode at once. >Every enemy on the map instantly dies >off in the distance I see one last damage number. One poor wisp gets obliterated by over 6000 damage. >portal leads me to a shrine where it says "Press E to obliterate yourself from existence" >And that was how I ended my best Risk of rain 2 run.Show moreShow less
One of my absolute favorite games completely ruined by Gearbox and Take Two Interactive with a horrendous DLC that botched the base game, and a recent EULA that wants to scrape all my personal data, prevent me from using mods, or even talk about glitches, bugs or cheats. It explicitly even states against using VPN to bypass this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Until, at the very least, this current EULA is rolled back, I can't in good faith recommend anyone to purchase this game. A real shame that a modern classic is completely and utterly ruined by corporate greed.Show moreShow less
so good that i downgraded my version to play the functioning version of the game :DShow moreShow less
Look at my playtime. I clearly like this game. So why the negative review? After a long break, I try to launch the game again and am met with a new EULA. The very first thing at the top of the EULA? "Mandatory Arbitration." Literally "You agree that even if our coding errors destroy your entire computer, you waive your right to take us to court, and agree to let us BS you about how we owe you nothing." No company worth supporting has mandatory arbitration clauses. If they HAVE such a clause, it's because they EXPECT to NEED it. So why would they need it? Maybe they want to sneak in spyware which is illegal in your country? Maybe they want to use your computer to mine bitcoin for themselves in the background as you play? Who knows? Whatever the case, it is NOT good. Avoid at all costs.Show moreShow less

Gearbox ruined it. It's crazy to me they think its acceptable to release a update so bad they have to put out a roadmap on how they're going to fix a thing they're already charging people for.Show moreShow less

amazing game by amazing devs that eventually sold it to a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ company that ruined it and reserve the right to put in spyware with the new eulaShow moreShow less
