One of my favorite games that I have played in the past five years has got to be 7 Days to Die, hands down, maybe even my absolute favorite. Whenever I try out a game, I dont play it for three or four hours before rating it, you're barely into a game to even rate it, in my opinion. At this moment, I'm 529 hours in, so I felt the time to review it was approaching fast, so here I am. Where do I begin? Well, I had been scrolling around on YouTube, looking for games to watch people play, when I accidentaly stubled upon this gem. I only saw Alpha 1 gameplay at the time, which barely resembles what this game is now. Despite how it looked, I had been looking for a survival base building game for a long time, so I bought it one weekend, and it absorbed my soul and then some. Whenever you first start, you have little to nothing on you. You have a bottle of water, a bandage, and some food to start with. You can loot your surroundings to get some basic materials to start making a stone axe to start getting wood to make a simple shack. If you don't want to build a base in the beginning, you can claim one of the many buildings and fortify it so it works as a home until you decide what you want. This task won't be easy, with zombies added into the mix. Depending on your difficulty, the zombies might be a niusance or an absolute nightmare to deal with. Every 7 days, a Zombie horde will come to attack you and destroy the precious progress you've made on your base, hence the name 7 Days to Die. In those 7 days, you will build your base, and get traps and weapons ready to survive the night and emerge victorious from your base when the morning comes. As the game goes on, it senses how well you're doing. If you're sweeping through the zombie hordes and haven't died in a while, It will send stronger zombies in more numbers to try to give the hardcorre people a challenge. There is a whole lot I could add into here, but for the sake of people who get bored of reading reviews all day, let me get to my pros and cons. Pros: -Lots of replayability. You can play a whole lot of this game and get the best stuff, and start all over again on another world with different settings to give your veteran self a bigger challenge, to keep the game fresh. EDIT: Even though the updates come rarely, there is SO MUCH added each update it's sometimes like you're playing an entirely different game. -Smart building. You can't just build a castle in the sky here! There is structual intergity in this game, so if you build a structure incorrectly or a zombie takes out an important support beam, the building could fall apart around you, along with your supplies being cast into the void. -Friendly Community. This community isn't like DayZ or some of the other communities that have murderous players lurking everywhere, there is a huge variety of servers, some being PvE(Player verses Enemy), others being PvP(Player verses Player), other servers being modded to give the game even more life. Cons: -Updates. The game does have updates, but they happen at least 3 or 4 times a year, so you will be playing the same thing for at least a couple of months before anything new is added, which is annoying at times. -Learning Curve. There are games like Space Engineer that have a very steep learning curve that makes casual players not want to pick these games up. 7 Days to Die can have this problem with new players at first, with so much to do and a horde on Day 7 being a problem that might overwhelm some players. I would reccomend watching some people play this first before jumping in, mainly so you have a vague idea on what you are doing. After that initial curve, the game definitely gets easier. -Graphics. If you are a big graphics gamer, then this game might be a bit dissapointing for you. The models, especially for the players, aren't too pretty to look at. The zombies are a bit better, but like I said, the graphics are a bit dissapointing to look at. The landscape is kind of blocky, but It is a minecraft-like game, so it is to be expected. Overall, this is one of my favorite games of all time. It does have it's flaws, like not super good graphics, a bit of a learning curve, few updates, and the occasional bug, but what it has far outclasses its cons, like solid gameplay, lots of repalyability, and having building physics that make you build smart and realistic. I would reccomend at least trying this game out, I think that you will enjoy it!Show moreShow less
Added 02/01/2015 - The game was meant to be fully released and completed by May 2014 according to the developers. It's still in Alpha as of this date. Original Pre-Alpha7 Review - http://screencloud.net/v/D4NS Original developer comment, finally changed on the 29th January - http://screencloud.net/v/pVOJ Original response to Developers - http://screencloud.net/v/vOcN Also had my review marked as abusive for no reason by the developers - http://screencloud.net/v/kkMI Added 02/01/2015 - The game was meant to be fully released and completed by May 2014 according to the developers. It's still in Alpha as of this date. Alpha 7 Review - March 2014 I decided to update my review as it was old and new builds have been released. Would I recommend the game now? No. For a multitude of reasons. Gameplay - The game still lags (on the one computer i've tried it on 16gb Ram, Nvidia GeForce 770M, i7 Processor, though I will try it on others also), though not as bad as before which is a plus, the game is now playable if you push the settings right down and it appears the developers have updated the recommended specifications to better match what the game requires. The updates to the Alpha 7 Build include the ever-so-needed stealth system, a rework of a lot of the in game textures, a looting-timer system (with noise penalties) cooking and a plethora of other things and since the Alpha 7 update random map generation has also been added. For me the balance between survival realism and zombie-shoot-em-up is wrong and the game feels boring like most of the other Early Access survival games Some gameplay feautures I do like though is the new loot-timing system. Instead of being able to see what is in a lootable container right away there is a short timer which in real life would replicate the opening of the container. There is also a noise penalty if you decided to 'take all' rather than each item individually which does add a nice realism touch to it. But that is my problem. The game doesn't feel like a sandbox survival game, it feels like a sandbox trying-to-be-everything game. I don't feel compelled to stay alive like I do in Rust, or build an awesome base like I do in Minecraft. I don't feel compelled to do anything in 7 Days to Die at all. I just don't find the game enjoyable. I've left the various 'bugs' out of the review, because it is an Alpha, and like all other Alpha's it has a ton of bugs, included some that are gamebreaking so beware of those. In all, the game is a lot better than it was before, but it's still not worth the price and I can't recommend a game where the developers believe that anyone who critisizes thier product is trolling and marks all and any critisism as 'abusive' and requests that Steam comes up with a way to 'anonomusly silence and report' all negative reviews or remarks. I have no desire to continue playing this game, mainly for that reason, though the game not being enjoyable FOR ME is also one. I do think for the price, and genre, there are many games that do the job of 7 Days To Die and are a lot better with better communities. The May deadline the developers set themselves has long passed and the game is still in Alpha stage. I recommend saving your money.Show moreShow less

It pains me to do this, it really does. I have nearly 4,000 hours in this game. Yes you read that correctly, I suffered from a chronic illness that immobilized me, as a former workaholic it was easy to do. I could actually move, build, and go on adventures, it was an awesome release... until now. I doubt I'll ever hit the 4k hour mark because, quite frankly, it's not fun anymore. And that is not because I lost interest, I would LOVE to keep playing. But over the past few years of development the gameplay itself, the sense of immersion and adventure, has suffered, greatly. It does indeed look better, much better, but it's lost it's mojo. What changed that caused this? A ton of little things really. Removal of Learning By Doing being a huge one, actions no longer mean anything. Instead of fixing exploits, like other games do, they just replaced ALL of it with RNG based magazines. Lame, mods found a compromise by mixing it up at least. Skill improves with use, but crafting up needs mags, that works well enough. But the vanilla just doesn't get it. They removed E for picking things up, now you have to punch crops to get them, also dumb. Farming, also ruined, used to be fun, organic, and useful. But one thing that seriously ruins each new game almost immediately is loot containers becoming static unusable objects once looted. Like wtf, at least give us an option. I hate looting now, and they force you to do more of it. Ugh. I used to take over existing buildings and fix them up, loved to do it, because who in the F would build a house from scratch in a world full of empty buildings. And I love building, so usually I'd make a horder base at least. But with fixer-upper buildings one of my fav things was getting to the point where I made a generator and wired up it's existing lights to work. It was a huge milestone in each playthrough... can't anymore. Again, wtf. How do you dev a game backwards like this. I didn't even mention the new armor system because I can't suffer through a playthrough long enough to get to that point. Especially being FORCED to deal with Rekt, can't stand that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and we have no choice, progression is so overly linked to them now, it no longer feels like a sandbox, I no longer feel independent. Wrapping it up, again I hate doing this, I have gotten far more than my moneys worth, no doubt, and I deeply appreciate what this game once was. But now I cannot in good faith recommend the polished turd it has become. I am hoping mods will save it, I really am. Regardless I owe a deep Thank You to the Fun Pimps for giving me way over 3k hours of good times, alas those times have ended.Show moreShow less
I have been playing this game since Alpha2, it is my and my son's favorite game to play together (he's 14). We have written a few suggestions that would increase longevity of gameplay, efficiency and fun. 1. Decrease the stupid wasp noise, way too loud and obnoxious 2. Incorporate rope, and simple machines including but not limited: pulleys for drawbridge function, trip wire, netting, and levers. 3. Equipable ruck sack for additional storage, but decreased speed. 4. Weather? rain would dampen smell and sound sensed by zombies, slow player... etcetera. 5. A zoomable minimap 6. Ladder lock, jump to eject, I have died way too many times falling off of a ladder. 7. Easier book reading for recipes. 8. Laser sight, red dot sight, and mechanical sight. Add a sword and a spear. 9. Alliances, groups, clans? 10. Big military base instead of those small camps. a lot of loot a lot of risk. 11. First aid kit to restore either half or full health. 12. Restaurant food prep/ovens and MREs 13. Fall breaking: IE pressing space bar breaks fall. 14. Silencers for the weapons 15. ammo in inventory carries to belt with a reloading speed penalty instead of having to manually transfer 16. Stamina regens faster when undected, slower when detected or hunted.Show moreShow less
Been with the game since the beginning and am still to this day enjoying every bit of it regardless of some less than desirable changes but alas, things come and go. This game is a high 9/10 from me and I highly recommend you try it out if you're on the fence. Step away from that aging game Minecraft and enjoy a finer more refined version with the only limiting factor in this game being your imagination as the things you can do and build are endless. Guaranteed thousands of hours of enjoyment! I'd love to give this review a thumbs up since this game is very deserving of it however, the community is a major part of any game and said community in this game is very unpleasant when it comes to discussing topics. Anything negative even remotely minor in being is met with extreme hostility which most of the time is uncalled for and unnecessary. I've not seen such fanaticism outside of Reddit and was genuinely surprised when attempting to share suggestions, potential changes, etc in the Steam discussion section as well as the official website. Give it a go as an observer and browse the general discussions section for a few days and see for yourself. I find it more pleasant and enjoyable discussing politics with the most hard headed of people than dealing with the majority of people on these forums. Other than that, 9/10 as mentioned at the beginning of my review. The game is a blast!! /edit I wrote this review with more of a head in the sand approach as I didn't want to post the usual spiel of omg early access 10+ years wtf, etc. Yes, the game has its problems -- quite a few. Some new and some old/legacy ones (10+ years later). Though with its faults, the game can still be enjoyed to an extent (with mods). With the devs losing sight of their original vision and the slew of nonsensical updates, etc etc et al, i'd honestly give it a 3.5/10. But as I said, this game is still fun and can be enjoyed thoroughly (when overlooking some of the more annoying bugs). 7 Years. It is officially 7 years to the day that this game has been out on Steam. 7 years and it's still in Early Access. It's still in Alpha. That's right. ALPHA. The most recent update was titled "Alpha 19.3 B6 Experimental" This game has seen 2 presidents and is about to see a third. This game has graduated high school and almost has a bachelors degree. It sounds like I'm gearing up to smash on this game but I'm not. I've spent over 80 hours in it and I've enjoyed my time. However, the fact that it has sold so many and is so highly rated yet is still considered Early Access Alpha is beyond me. Updates are still churning in. The 19.3 B6 update? Available to opt in as of yesterday. Devs, it's time to poo or get off the pot. You're making a mockery of what a game in Early Access means. As buggy as it is, Cyberpunk 2077 released fully before you did. We're up to the Playstation 5. Your game is good but you can't keep the training wheels on forever. It's never going to be perfect. Nothing is.Show moreShow less
NEW REVIEW FOR THE UPDATED GAME 4/21/2014 Thanks in advance for reading, whether you agree or disagree with my review. If you are warming up to type TL/DR after seeing the length of my reivew, just scroll on down and I'll have a short list of the plusses and minuses from what I saw. After a few messages popped up informing me that my review was getting pretty dated, I decided once again to step back into the zombie infested world of 7 Days To Die. Right off the bat I noticed a cleaner, more polished world, with flattened terrain and buildings looked more like blocky buildings, and not freaking funhouses. I then looked down to see if I still had akward stilt legs that had equal animations to a wind up toy you would find in a dollar store. But what's this!? I am missing my legs. So either the devs pulled the legs, knowing they were a visual abomination. Or they thought the game worked better without them. I myself prefer seeing my character's legs to increase imersion, but that is just my opinion. After coping with the fact I was nothing more than a floating torso, I headed to the nearest car. As I looted the trunk, I noticed there is now a small searching timer. I assume the timer is to make things a feel a little more authentic. Instead of being able to do a lightning fast snatch-n-grab on anything you see, you actually have to choose whether or not it's worth checking that box or car depending on your current situation and how many brain thirsty zombies are after you. After digging a pathetic excuse for a cave (more like a trench that just got deeper) I had a good 15 minute wander until I walked into what I would assume was a radiation zone of sorts. My character quickly lost health until I went into a comical death animation resembling a lawn flamingo falling over stiff as a board. I laughed, respawned, and made my way to a familiar little town and was quickly greeted by a few zombies and..... zombie dogs. Now, I understand having a variety of enemeis in games, but I find the zombie dogs and giant bees to be rather annoying. I would rather shut a door or window to stop those little F*%$ers from bothering me further. What I did like were the spider zombies. Lanky freaks with long arms kind of creep me out, so I'll bite on that one. Upon meeting my undead K9 freinds, I ran to a nearby house, closed the door, and started taking anything I could and headed to the attic. After hearing the repetitive "crunch, snarl, squish, slam" of the beasts outside for a few minutes, I skulked downstairs to see how things were going outside. I first was greeted by a running zombie (because the house was dark) and quickly dispatched him with what few shotgun rounds I had. I then turned the corner and ran into a fat zombie and a rather voluptuous female zombie (don't judge me!). I pulled out my handgun and fired a few rounds into the fattie, but saw that they were just jumping in place instead of trying to eat me. After a few rounds I noticed Mr. fatty fat really only liked jumping when I shot him. I then decided put a round in head of his female parter and saw the ragdoll had been cleaned up a bit as she tumbled to the ground, which I appreciated since I am a ragdoll ♥♥♥♥♥. I finished off count blobberton and headed out the back of the house. The rest of my play time involved me walking from house to house, collecting whatever I saw without caring what it was. My level of entertainment wasn't very high from the beginning, but what was left of it was draining fast. I eventually found myself doing what I did last time, standing on a rooftop, watching 20+ zombies gnaw at the same spot over and over. I decided to end it all with one last 'flamingo flop' death and called it a night. There were good things and bad things I saw in this playthough and I will list them to the best of my knowledge since I am a newbie at writing reviews and I didn't take notes. PLUSSES! 1. Ragdoll was cleaned up 2. Sharper visual quality 3. Looting timer (it's the little things that add up the the big experience) 4. No more funhouse style! 5. Character models and different monster types (spider zombie=cool. Dog zombie=bad) 6. The price did drop from 35.00 to 25.00 MINUSES 1. I lost my hideous stilt legs in echange for a floating torso (possible plus?) 2. Player and monster animations are still clunky and feel far from realistic 3. AI pathing is pretty painful, it's at it's worst when you are indoors (fattie liked to jump when shot) 4. Pretty much still the same experience as last time. 5. Mining and crafting (although varied) aren't doing much to keep me wanting to find that last piece I need to complete my item. 6. The landscape has been worked on, but nothing in that game makes me want to explore it. The radiation zone killed me, and did not inspire me to dig deeper to see what was in there. I would just turn and walk the other way if I ran into it again. 7. Zombies kind of feel more like a nuisance instead of a threat. I won't bother going into a dark house because I know it will just ensue a Benny hill style run around with some zombies. 8. The price still doesn't feel worth it There could be more items but I will stop here since I JUST got a kickstarter update email from the funpimps saying that a new update is right around the corner. THE VERDICT! With bigger contenders like DayZ standalone, Rust, State of decay, the recently revealed H1Z1 (with crafting, building, and vehicles), 7DTD still does not do it for me for the price. When I walk around the world of DayZ I actually feel like someone trying to survive in that world, and I worry about attracting zombies and player kill happy gamers. In 7DTD I run to everything, piss off ALL THE ZOMBIES and watch them chew and slap the side of the house I am squatting in at the moment while growing bored. In State of Decay I LOVE going out at night to scavenge. And holy crap do I get a rush when I accidentally make a noise while looting and see zombies close in around the house I am in. I doesn't get more cinematic than when you fight for your life in a house full of zombies and jump through a window to escape at the last second. In 7DTD it's hardly a thrill when zombies come after you in a house. In the end, I still don't reccomend this game to players at it's current state and price. But to each their own. I still hope to turn this negative review to a positive one day. Thanks again for reading. --------------------OUT DATED VERSION REVIEW FROM 2013----------------- I backed this game on kickstarter in August. I played a good amount of the alpha when I got it and I didn't really like what I saw, but before people get mad I DO know how much more work devs promise to have done. I understand it's still in it's early stages, but over time I have not seen a whole lot of changes so far (My Opinion). In minecraft I actually WANT to mine and search for goods and I take pride in the places I build to survive in, and I fear what stares at me from the windows at night. In other open world zombie games I WANT to gather food and I get tense while fighting humans and NPC zombies. This game does not inspire me to do much of anything. I get guns, I build around houses, I watch the mindless zombies just stand at the wall below me wihtout trying much to make me worry about getting attacked. The night cycle is not even fun to sneak around on. The current character models are either a male or female characters with two color options (all pretty ugly). and the textures are acceptable. Do I reccomend this game currentlyat it's price? Hell no. Do I hope the game gets to the point where I can reccomend it for the price? Yes, yes I freaking do. But at this moment I could think of many other games I would rather have purchased with the 35 I spent backing this game. I also want to add that the hours played are only what I played on the steam version. I put much more on the pre steam release.Show moreShow less
Show moreShow less
Update for Version "1.0: The devs just up and lied to release a Beta build in Early Access for over a decade, to a "1.0 Release" today with a hotfix for a change log, yet the in-game version is literally labeled as "Beta b333" with a message to the player that "This is pre-release content". This was most likely rushed out so the studio could wash its hands and officially abandon this very much still-in-alpha game with a hyped up announcement of a cash grab, and a godawful price hike to $45 freakin' bucks. You'd think this unfinished $20 Early Access title would celebrate it's 1.0 release with a SALE, not a freakin; PRICE HIKE! Original Review Dec. 13, 2023 The devs literally just celebrated being in Early Access for 10 years today. An entire decade; and it's still in Alpha... That's not a thing to celebrate folks. With the current state of the gaming industry being so horrible, this sets a dangerous precedent.Show moreShow less
