“What clicks here is that every chapter throws out the rulebook — collecting in a sunny mob town one minute, directing a movie the next, signing a creepy contract with a forest ghost after that. Great platforming, top-tier music; just know the story is short.”
Our Verdict
Add every dimension up and A Hat in Time is a game with clear flaws and a virtue rare enough to forgive them. It is no flawless masterpiece — the dated visuals, the short main story, the launch bugs are all real. But in the 3D collectathon, a genre PC players were starved of for the better part of a decade, it turned in the most convincing answer the platform has seen in years.
A tiny studio proving Nintendo does not own the genre

Pin it to 2017 and the coordinates get clearer. That was the year Super Mario Odyssey landed, the genre's reigning giant flexing in its prime. And right there beside it stood A Hat in Time — a crowdfunded project from Gears for Breakfast, a studio small enough to count on your fingers — holding its ground and proving that a third-party indie can do this old genre at a top-tier level too.
Commercially it is a textbook success story: past half a million copies in early 2018, past a million by year's end, and roughly 1.92 million across platforms after that.
For a team that started on community goodwill, that number carries weight — and it doubles as a message to the industry that PC's appetite for great 3D platformers never went away, it just went unfed.
The reception leaves almost no soft spot. A 97% Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam across more than forty thousand reviews makes it one of the most beloved entries the genre has on the platform; on the critical side, OpenCritic stamps it Strong with a recommendation rate near seventy-four percent, Metacritic sits at 79, and China's Gamersky handed it an 8.5. Critics and players landed, rarely, on the same verdict — and it is genuinely uncommon to see an indie clear both the professional bar and the community bar at once. This one did.
Who should buy it, who can wait, and which version to grab

So who is it for? The answer is unusually clean. If you ache for the Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie joy of running through three-dimensional levels and prying collectibles out of every corner, and you have been parched for it on PC, this is a hill you basically cannot route around. If you want something cute, easygoing, and split-screen-ready for an evening with a kid or a partner, it fits just as well. And if you are the tinkering sort who wants Death Wish to brutalise you or lives in the Workshop's custom maps, the long tail will keep you fed for a long time.
Flip it around, and if you only play story-driven blockbusters and have no patience for a find-everything collection loop, this may not be your dish — its pleasure is fundamentally about exploring handcrafted three-dimensional levels, and you have to actually enjoy that. There is no cover-shooter fallback here, no sprawling RPG menu to get lost in; if the core act of jumping around a space and prying its secrets loose does not light you up, no amount of charm will paper over that mismatch. Be honest with yourself about it before you buy. As for versions, the call is simple: take the PC build, because only it runs Workshop mods, and that is the key to stretching the game past a hundred hours; if you want the hardcore gauntlet, add Seal the Deal on top. On balance, it is a no-hesitation buy for anyone who loves this genre, and well worth a spot on everyone else's to-play list — discount or no discount.

I was never really that much of a fan of collectathons, but I was willing to give this game a shot. The experience wasn't the most solid I ever had, but I'll need to give credit where credit is due. Pros : -The game has a cute charm, despite not being afraid to hide somber concepts in plain sight. -The majority of the areas in the game are quite creative, I'm not sure who thought of Mafia Town. -Chapter 2 and 3 specifically have great characters, stories, and levels; the Snatcher alone tempts me to give this a positive review. -The platforming can be interesting, it's likely at its best in chapter 2. -Hat kid herself is fun to control, so the game is very fun when the level design is well done. -This game has great mod support, so not all was lost even if I only enjoyed around 50% of the actual game. -Every level starts with a neat high quality splash screen -cosmetic hats Cons : -Chapter 4 is a slogfest imo, it's way too large for its own good. While the concept of free roam is a neat change of pace from the rest of the game, its value is spread thin across the large map it has. -The platforming isn't always interesting, sometimes it's just plain boring. -The bosses are neat, but most of them overstay their welcome. (ignoring the fact that deathwish brought much harder versions of them) -Hat kid's lineup of hats aren't that well implemented into the game, most of them other than the dweller mask/sprint hat have little use and don't really flow into the platforming that well. I'd wager they're more important in a speedrun context, but they're not taken advantage of too much in the base game. -The game is a bit janky, though I can forgive this a bit due to how easy the base experience is. -The optimization isn't really the best, be warned if your computer is a potato. -Mustache girl is only relevant at the start and end of the game, which is a shame since chapter 1 made her seem a bit more important than that. Ultimately, this game was a mixed bag to me. I definitely see why it got its following, but it wasn't my thing.Show moreShow less
>Played A Hat in Time >"This girl is so sweet and wholesome" >check steam workshop >"Hat Kid Swears Mod" >instant download >now hat kid swears everytime she takes damage >plays pattycake with a bald italian mafia man with a stature of a gorilla >punches the ♥♥♥♥ outta me >hat kid screams "♥♥♥♥" as she flies away >15/10Show moreShow less

Imagine a good game. Then imagine a dev/moderation team who are incapable of ignoring a handful of trolls, and instead choose to censor and ban everyone who discusses a highly contentious topic in the game. Not even calm productive discussions that could change peoples minds. This is why I dont recommend the game, ore recommend you give these developers money.Show moreShow less
A Hat in Time is one of the best platformers you'll find on steam. Pros: +Colorful Artstyle +Easy to grab +Full Voice Acting +Funny/Cute Story Line +Funny/interesting characters +Gives Super Mario Sunshine/ Legend of Zelda: Windwaker feels. Cons: -I didn't support the kickstarter and now i'm sad. Overall a pecking good time Edit: I nominated this game for the "Better than I expected" award!Show moreShow less
I see the devs are censoring any criticism about the trans-flag stuff, that ain't a good look bruh. personally I could give two fricks about the flag because its in the sewers where it belongs, but censoring people for criticism is seriously not a good look, imagine being that pathetic you feel obligated to censor any criticism you don't like, if you didn't want criticism you shouldn't have put the flag in the game in the first place. You're clearly pandering to a specific group of people.Show moreShow less
