“A mid-budget sibling escape that turns the Black Death into a light-versus-rats hook nobody else has copied”
Our Verdict
Taken as a whole, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a game that knows what it wants and mostly gets there. An 8 is the fairest summary of "perfect on story, flawed on play."
A game that defined AAA polish on an AA budget
Rewind to 2019, and it stood beside Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice as proof that an AA outfit could conjure the sheen of AAA storytelling. Neither leaned on open-world bulk; both held you with one focused tale and one unmistakable mood. Metacritic 81, OpenCritic 82, eighty-one percent of critics recommending it — those figures mark a game with a sturdy reputation, widely admired, but short of the masterpiece tier above 85. The missing breath is gameplay depth, and only that.
Looking back, the thing hardest to replace is how tightly it locks three pieces together: the subject of the Black Death, the firelight-versus-rat-sea play, and the sibling bond at its heart. Even now, few games braid theme, mechanic, and narrative into a single cord like this — that is its true talisman. Others may push sharper visuals, deeper combat, bigger worlds, but few can make you picture "the girl holding a torch, shielding her brother as she pushes through a sea of rats" and instantly know which game it is. That one-of-a-kind hook is why it is still talked about years after release.
Who should buy, and who should walk past
If you value narrative density and atmosphere, and want a complete story told in a dozen unhurried hours, it is very nearly the benchmark answer among mid-budget games. It suits players who love escort or guardian tales and do not mind featherweight combat — you are here for the story, and the mechanics are merely the vessel.
Flip it around: if you crave open-world freedom, hardcore combat depth, or heaps of grindable content, this game will feel too linear, too led by the hand. It is not a systems player's game; it bet nearly everything on narrative and mood, and forcing it will only disappoint. Think of it less as a game you master and more as a story you are walked through — a guided thing, by design, that asks you to surrender to the telling rather than to test the seams. Decide first whether you want a story to be told or a system to dig into, and you will save yourself the letdown — there is no shame in either appetite, only in bringing the wrong one to this particular table.
Pick the right version and walk the dark road through
On versions, lean toward the next-gen PS5 or Xbox Series builds or the PC release for 60 frames and steadier visuals, sidestepping the launch-era optimization debt; the Switch port is a cloud-streaming version that needs a connection and is a notch behind, not a first choice unless you must. This is a complete single work — no DLC or season pass required, one purchase is all of it, a rare bit of peace of mind in today's market. It has shortfalls, and the play wobbles late, but its strengths — those two children keeping each other alive across a sea of rats — are moving enough that you will forgive the gaps and walk the whole road with them. Few games leave you carrying a single image for years; this one leaves you the girl, the torch, and the dark pressing in at the edge of the light. For anyone who loves a story, the trip is worth it; and if it moves you, the 2022 sequel A Plague Tale: Requiem is waiting to take you further down the same road.

A letter to anyone like me who's tired of lootboxes, DRM, battle royales, and microtransactions - Get. This. Game. I have never left a review on Steam until now, but this game needs more publicity than it's getting. For $45, you are getting: - Fantastic single-player story - Likable characters - Amazing graphics & immersion - Solid optimization (roughly 5 hours in as of this review - no crashes or bugs so far) - Incredible soundtrack & musical score - None of the things I mentioned in the very first line of this review (lootboxes, DRM, etc.) I totally didn't need the cosmetic DLC, but I decided to buy it anyway because, unlike so many AAA games on the market nowadays, this one in particular has actually earned my respect - and therefore my money. If you want another obnoxious battle royale game, you're out of luck. If you want the "thrill" of playing a digital slot machine for the 1-in-1000 chance at getting a fancy weapon skin, look elsewhere. This game reminds me about all of the reasons why I love to play video games in the first place. If that's what you want, then you've come to the right place. Sincerely, Just an average guy named Ryan.Show moreShow less
Pros: - Beautiful graphics - Gripping Story - Well done sound tracks - Unique game with an interesting take on the genre Cons: - Buggy AI - Game is prone to FPS drops and freezing - Multiple bugs which can force you to restart from your last checkpoint - Doing things out of order / in a different way then intended (resources instead of the environment) can freeze the game - No ultrawide support - Short (EDIT: Finished the game within 8 hours, despite dealing with bugs. Just to add a time frame) Despite being an incredible game, I cannot recommend it at the moment. The AI in the game are very buggy, doing something in the wrong order, or using resources instead of an environmental item, can lead to the entire game becoming unplayable, or forcing you to reload a checkpoint. The companion AI, have a habit of running away from duo objectives, making progress tedious at times (having to do the same part twelve times before it worked) etc. There are issues with the frame rates, there can often be large drops even on more modern hardware (1080ti / i7-8700k). The game-play itself is truly great, but it's the smaller issues which feel like they ruin the experience. Effectively, this is more of an interactive movie, where your skill will impact the length of it. If these are fixed, or if it goes on sale - it'll be worth getting 100%. However as it stands right now, the game costs too much money for the issues it currently has. EDIT: Since some people seem reluctant to read the full context of the review; The game itself is good, aside from the shortness of it and the abrupt ending. (the story itself is 6-8 hours, maybe 10 if you collect everything). There is also no after-game content. I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm saying that right now, I cannot justify the cost of it to another user. That being said, there are no hardware issues that would cause the bugs mentioned above, the optimization just isn't right. For an idea, I'm running a 1080ti, i7-8700k (5Ghz) and 32GB RAM. This is totally normal, it's not a massive studio, issues like this were bound to happen. With time i'm sure it'll be fixed, and over in the discussion tab there's a few player-posted work arounds for some issues. If you think this is an issue with my PC, solely for this game, please visit the store discussion page where you will find other users with the same issues, running 20XX series cards and some AMD users. Things like AI breaking, cut-scenes being goofy or progression being frozen have nothing to do with hardware. These are related to the game itself. There are other bugs currently being looked into by the devs in the discussion section too, such as a certain part of Chapter 7 being literally impossible to do if you encounter a rare bug (no spoilers). These issues do NOT effect everyone, but on the chance that you MIGHT be affected, I cannot recommend the game at this moment in time. If it's patched, or goes on sale - it'll be worth it, provided you're aware of the length of the game and accept that (I mentioned this as many people won't be satisfied with 8-10 hours for £40/$45). Before complaining this is isolated to my PC, please do some research into the topic as I did, prior to posting this review. The game itself was good, but is it currently worth the asking price? In my opinion, no.Show moreShow less
Humans are still worse than rats Single player games are dead”. People who say that are morons. We don't get a lot of good single player games because people want live service and multiplayer in every game. But there's still some dedicated developers who deliver the highest quality single player experiences. Plague Tale is a third person adventure game with great emphasis on story. It has everything you would want in a single player game. After the inquisition comes, you and your little brother Hugo escape in search to find a person who could heal the little brother. Like your ill brother and inquisition is not enough there are rats everywhere, they're eating people, they come from everywhere and roam in the dark. Only light can save you from being eaten by rats. The journey is terrifying and extremely enjoyable. Each chapter consists of a new area you can explore a little. Some chapters are more action based some are calm and all you do is talk with your friends and some have puzzles. Gameplay is simple. Most of the time you must get from one point to another while avoiding the inquisition soldiers and rats. There's a lot of stealth in this game, but it's not too bad. It's a simple stealth mechanic, nothing too deep. You usually need to crouch walk from cover to cover while distracting or killing the soldiers. Then there are rats and to avoid them you need to stay in the light so you run from one fire source to the other. Or sometimes you are able to carry a torch. Later in the game you unlock more skills and can use other methods to deal with everything. Overall gameplay is really fun, the game is not hard although you'll find yourself dying sometimes because you either chose the wrong path or just wasn't careful enough. But nothing to worry about, this is a story driven game after all. You can craft various equipment which can be used on rats and soldiers. Actually all this resource gathering, crafting mechanics, sneaking on enemies and using your tools and some puzzles reminds me a little of recent Tomb Raider games, but that's the only similarity. Hugo sometimes is little annoying. I understand the kid haven't seen the outside world much, but after seeing human eating rats coming out of nowhere, soldiers who torture and kill other people and wants to kill him and his sister, he still runs around, screams and wants to play. Seriously, I would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ my pants there and would be holding to my sister so hard that i would tear her robes off. But no, he just runs away all happy la la la la la. This felt strange. But it's a minor thing anyway. The world is dark and full of death but developers know there's always a hope. You can find blooming flowers in most of the levels showing there's still hope for the bright future. Nice little touch there. Also another little thing I noticed is when you take a huge book the character doesn't put it in her magical pocket/black hole. She puts it on her back in a self made backpack. These are little details but it's good to know developers take attention to these details. At one point in the game i even got some Overlord vibes. The graphics are quite impressive considering it's not an AAA game. The game looks very good. When you look closer and start analyzing the graphics you can see it uses older technology. It feels like last gen technology was squeezed to the max here. It's in no way looks bad. The game looks great. Every level is carefully designed with beautiful attention to detail. Sometimes you don't even want to run around but just walk slowly admiring the surroundings. Character models are well done but facial expressions, animations and hair graphics are lacking. Not a big deal of course, but it could be better. Sadly no out of the box ultrawide support so you'll need to use a fix. But after that ultrawide works great. Performance is very good. I've played the game on max settings on 3440x1440 and it was a smooth ride. There's also a basic photo mode. Nothing fancy but i'm glad they included it. You can take some nice screenshots with it, I just wish they would include more advanced photo mode. You think everything so far is great right? Yes, this game does everything good, it may lack some little minor things like I mentioned, but what is done to perfection is music. The music here is 11/10. It's dark, grim and terrifying. Combined with extremely dark atmosphere the music adds another layer of greatness. The game isn't hard, checkpoint system is generous and even when you know you won't be losing much by dying, your heart starts racing when you're running through those disgusting areas while the music is playing. It adds tension, it makes you feel scared. This game is a good example of a great single player game and single player games are clearly not dead considering the success of Plague Tale. A game for everyone who want go on a grim adventure, see things they've never seen before. For any story driven/adventure game fans this is a must. This game among all the live-service crap is like that blooming flower among dead bodies. This game is only one hair away from being a masterpiece. I'd also wanted to say i'm looking forward to the next game by these developers and then I found out their next game is...ehm...Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. A little bit different eh? Gonna buy it of course. But I hope to see more story driven games from Asobo. Pros Great story Quite unique Brilliant soundtrack Good graphics Nice pacing, no repetitiveness Dark and beautiful at the same time Cons Could use some work on facial animations No ultrawide support by default Follow my curator page for moreShow moreShow less
I wanted so much to like this game but I can't recommend it for the asking price. It's beautiful looking and the rats physics is a very good and original idea. However, it gets ridiculous very quicly with the twirling heaps of rats coming at you, I burst into laughing the first time I saw it. It's repetitive as hell and there's always just one way to go and one way to deal with encounters. There's no emergent gameplay and close to no place for improvisation, only what the developpers planned for you to do. From time to time there will be moments where you have to deal with waves of ennemies coming at you where you will die over and over until you know by heart where and when each one is coming so you can kill them before they get to you, it's infuriating. This is poor, not to say bad, game design. And because the checkpoint system makes no sense you will either have them way too often when it's not necessary and at other times, during tough and long moments, you will die only to realize you have to do the last 10min all over again with long unskipable dialogues you now know by heart. It's tedious, so tedious that it took me more than a month to go throuh it as I got bored and stopped playing very quickly every time. By the way, the game takes approximately 13 hours to complete the main story + most of the extras. I played it in french for "flavor", given that the story takes place in France and it's made by a french studio, but the french dubbing, if not absolutly awful, is far from great. I see that a lot of people seem to enjoy the game and that's good for them, I really wanted to too, but sadly I didn't. This game has no replay value whatsoever, and I'm fine with a game like that if it delivers me a good and engaging story but it fails to do that too. I found it boring and hard to follow at the same time, ridiculous and highly predictable for the "twists". Maybe it's due to the bad dubbing but I failed to relate to any of the characters. Now not to sound too bitter, I have to say that the scenery is absolutly gorgeous, there are tons of visually « wow moments », the rats swarm mechanics is a technical wonder and the music is very good but that's about it and that doesn’t make the game itself good in my opinion. I'm sure the developpers put a lot of resources, work and heart into this game but to me it's not worth 45€ but maybe 25/30€. In the end, it was a disappointment. When you see a huge majority of people having the opposite opinion of yours you feel that you may have missed something and maybe I did, but it still feels like the game is a little overrated to me. EDIT : I forgot to add on the plus part that I don't remember encountering one bug during my entire playthough, that's something of a rarity with 3D games nowadays.Show moreShow less

With the best will in the world - this game is not good. Yes, it's beautifully drawn in places, and yes, there's a touching and pretty well acted relationship between the two protagonists. However, there's serious issues. Despite what you've heard, rat physics are not good - just a particle effect that collapses if you scrutinise it for more than a second. Why is that an issue? Well, it means they aren't scary. And given that they aren't scary, there's nothing left to enjoy, because there's no gameplay. Just endless, simple, single solution progress areas that barely contain any so called 'puzzles.' There's no challenges to get your teeth into. Every problem has a single, telegraphed solution. It's so dull. Were it not for the graphic content, this is essentially a game for small children, in pure gameplay terms. Oh and that story - it's full of supernatural nonsense that quickly undermines the tense, murky tension of the period that is established earlier on. I'm not kicking the developer, I'm just upset I paid £30 for this none-game, and given the lack of gameplay - I wouldn't even buy it on sale. I don't normally write reviews, but I feel compelled to help at least one person save their hard earned money if they read this given the sudden attention (mysteriously positive) this game received upon release. It's just so frustrating because all the elements were there for a cracking, head scratching, very scary stealth action puzzle game. But it is not that.Show moreShow less

Beautiful immersive puzzle game. Well suited to people who like linear, movie-like stories. Its strengths are its clever "rat" mechanics and immersive story. But I grew bored. This is where the good parts end. I want to touch on some aspects that may save some money for people who, like myself, prefer more freedom in games. The game liniarity cannot be overstated. There is ONE SINGLE path across the story, in two different flavors: killing, and no killing. Not killing makes everything very repetitive. Throw stones and sneak by guards. So for me it's killing which at least gives some variety in choice of angles. Doors behind you lock shut, bridges collapse. Puzzles are designed so you cannot get stuck, which should be a good thing, but it also means game doesn't allow you to climb a ladder unless you've done what was required on the floor. Sometimes the solution eludes you, but the game restrictions make it so that doing whatever is available at the moment fixes it. You have a pile of sticks nearby? grab one. See a wheel? turn it? The "skill" progression created by sling upgrades is also intentionally "linear". You may assume having upgrades would make this game more diverse or interesting, but in truth, the game makes it so that you only "level up" when the game wants you to. Upgrading requires certain ingredients and an upgrade table. You only find upgrade tables in certain areas throughout the story, cannot return to them, and even when exploring a large area with an upgrade table there is always an essential ingredient called "tools" which is always a single one in the entire stage of the story. If you are reckless and miss some ingredients you can easily miss an upgrade possibility, but you can never get ahead or recover missed upgrades (nor do they really matter so much actually). The upgrade choices is also restrictive. You cannot "rush" a certain upgrade such as not requiring "tools" and research table due to the special cocktail of ingredients required which the game makes sure you don't get enough of. For example The above mentioned skill requires a lot of "cloth" and the game makes sure you get the exact amount throughout the progression that one skill tree doesn't get in front of others by much. And in the end NO upgrade really matters. Perhaps except for the first one which "fixes" your sling. The game feels so restrictive I put a lot of effort into breaking it just out of boredom. I killed all of the rates in certain areas by chasing them for hours with torches into corners, killed all of the guards in an area although it was not required to do so. Every single time it was a dead end. Nothing good came out of straying off the beaten path. No "rare loot", no story development, no "easter egg". Killing instead of distracting requires more ingredients which the game provides in drops with almost every dead guard. Just enough to make it irrelevant which flavor you chose. A final complaint about the game is its obliviousness to obvious solutions. You cannot pass the torch to your companion to shoot the sling or put it on the ground. You have to put it out. You cannot grab any torches carried by guards, you have to stick to specifically designed ones for the game progression. You cannot re-lit a dropped torch and actually, if you drop your torch for any reason, you've done something wrong. There must be a holder somewhere. One interesting "choice" you get to make is in a long hallway. You're holding a torch, at the end there is a guard like all of the others you've been killing so far and between you there are rats. Pushing forward means the rats are pushed into the guard. (The game gives no explanation as to why the rats don't go to him without you pushing them). The scene feels like slowly pushing a knife into someone's heart and tries to make you feel pitty for the guy. I did feel pitty, and the solution was obvious: Light the guard's torch with a fire bomb. Only one problem: You're holding a torch yourself so you cannot use your sling. If only one of my two companions could hold this damn thing.... Thankfully there is a torch holder hardly visible on the wall in your back so you don't have to kill the guard like you did with the other 34523, but needing to place the torch on the wall seems like a stupid solution to me. Why can't I just give it to my companion? Not the 5 year old. The 12 year old that knows alchemy and how to build fire bombs. I bet he could hold a f...ing torch.Show moreShow less
RATS! WE'RE RATS; WE'RE THE RATS! WE PREY AT NIGHT WE STALK AT NIGHT! WE'RE THE RATS! I enjoyed this game and recommend it at this 45$ price point for anyone that enjoys story driven games - PROS The sound design and OST are pinnacle The graphics are very good and level design is also very good The voice acting is phenomenal The story is engaging and original - CONS The game is VERY story focused. Gameplay seems more like an afterthought in that the game isn't very challenging and the primary gameplay devices consist of stealth puzzles and very one dimensional action segments. This is the biggest detractor for this game in my opinion. - This game will take you roughly 8.5 hours to complete. That is relatively short for a singleplayer games, but, I believe the price tag accounts for this. Overall, I would definitely recommend picking this one up if you enjoy narrative driven games ie (Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War) I will eagerly await a sequel if one ever makes it to market.Show moreShow less
I really hate to be this kinda guy because I usually disagree with them, but... This REALLY should've just been a movie or TV Series, because it makes for a REALLY boring video game. Such utterly shallow and tedious game-play that lasts for far too long. Genuinely feel like i'm crazy seeing as this has such high praise and I just don't understand.Show moreShow less
