BRONZE MEDAL I usually don't write detailed reviews but a friend asked for my thoughts, so here are them in a nutshell: The game is almost of the same quality as its predecessor, the improvements have been made graphically, and the levels have been expanded. Apart from that, I did not find the writing quality and the pace of the game, which are the most striking points of the first game, of the same quality in this game. I didn't enjoy most of the script. Unfortunately, the gameplay remains and feels the same. The limited gameplay wasn't too a problem as the first game offered a concentrated 10-hour experience. Unfortunately, Requiem offers a playtime of 20 hours or more, which annoys the player at some point when the game runs out of new ideas. Even though I was satisfied with Innocence, I did not enjoy Requiem most of the time, which is very sad for me because I highly anticipated this game. Requiem is not a bad game, but I can say that the rating of the game drops for me when any game stays the same quality as its predecessor. One of the worst optimizations I've seen in recent years, on par with CP 2077 (and that was more of a buggy mess than anything) Do not recomend the game unless you have a very high end PC. Specially on the cpu side.Show moreShow less

Inferior to the first in every way but graphics and music. The writing and general plot structure are particularly bad, and will often have you doing things that make no sense at all. Edit: I've had a few days to think about what exactly I feel lets Requiem down. Here it is: Disconnected from the first game: Am(n)ecia and Hugo seem to have forgotten a lot of what they went through in Innocence, apart from when it's convenient to the writers (so they can throw an arbitrary complication into an otherwise simple task). They both seem surprised that Hugo can control the rats despite him doing so at the finale of Innocence, as well as being surprised that the rat problem hasn't gone away despite there being no reason for it to have done so. They are also surprised at the scale of destruction during the fall of the Red City despite having seen the same thing happen at least twice in Innocence. I'm not expecting them to be numb to it, but it comes off as the characters or writers being ignorant of their own history. In Requiem, Amecia makes much poorer decisions despite having lived through and overcome a lot of the same challenges and scenarios already, and despite knowing exactly who and what is at stake if she acts impulsively. She supposedly learned these lessons in Innocence, and even goes so far as to impress their importance upon Hugo, so I have no idea why she's having to figure it out again now. Amecia's mother, Beatrice, does not seem like the same person that was portrayed in Innocence, and her apparent indifference to Hugo's suffering at the hands of Vaudin is strange to me, as is her blind deference to him when the first game establishes her as somewhat of an expert on the Macula. Also, why did she not consult with Vaudin before letting the Macula destroy her homeland? Nice work, Beatrice! So many stealth sections: The stealth sections are long and arduous, and while there are new mechanics to help, they don't quite make up for the scale of the new areas or the amount of enemies you have to contend with. There are frequent back-to-back stealth sections with nothing of significance happening between them and the same generic upgrade and crafting materials from the first game dotted around as exploration rewards. More enemies, more helmets, and Amecia apparently forgetting all of the skills she learned in Innocence result in her feeling like she's somehow become less capable. Enemies have maintained or improved their skills and abilities from the first game, yet Amecia's regressed pretty much back to her starting point in a mere 6 months. Puzzles are also very simple, to the point where there's usually little to figure out, and it repeats much of the things done in the first game. Light the thing, move the thing, use the companion, etc. Rather than an exploration of ideas, this time it just feels like retreading ground because it's mostly ideas that were already fully utilised in Innocence. Lack of plot grounding: Personally this is my biggest issue with Requiem. Innocence told a fairly realistic story about a sister learning to love her estranged brother whilst keeping them both safe from a decidedly unrealistic apocalypse. The rats, the Macula, the entire apocalypse, is just a horrific backdrop to a very human story that we can all empathise with and connect to, and it works because it's built on that. I cared about Hugo and Amecia because I was invested in their changing relationship and the things they were learning about each other and themselves. It's the baseline reality that the story continually spirals outward from and no matter how unbelievable and clearly impossible the world and events became, they lent it credence by feeling real and genuine. Requiem, however, tells a story without grounding. The main plot thread, as far as Chapter 7 (I gave up at that point), is about a magical dream island with a magical dream bird that Hugo thinks will cure him, and the sub-events and misadventures on the way are typically caused by the characters making decisions that are either illogical or outright harmful to their own goals. A few examples are: Amecia and Lucas trying to escape the guards of the Red City, with Amecia suddenly making a stand and going on a murderous rampage, ensuring they're both captured. This is during an attempt to return to Hugo with herbs they believe are needed to alleviate his seizures. Nice work, Amecia! Beatrice allowing the abuse of Hugo at the hands of Vaudin with seemingly no challenge or inquiry as to his methods, causing the fall of the Red City. Amecia abandoning her only form of transportation (and Lucas, her most reliable ally) immediately after nearly being killed by a mercenary who is likely still in the area, simply because she's upset with her mother for the prior inexplicable actions with Hugo (and not believing the magical-island-bird-cure thing). Amecia is, of course, almost immediately caught, but not before causing trouble for yet another group of innocent bystanders. Amecia and Hugo accepting Arnaud, the mercenary who nearly murdered Amecia, into the party soon after the attack. Amecia is still struggling with complications from the injury when he catches them. The distrust is gone much too quickly, and it's genuinely only 5-10 minutes until they're making jokes at/with each other and sharing anecdotes. Amecia has flaming crossbow bolts, but rather than ignite one and carry it she has to shoot it into Arnaud's shield, which is a bad idea on so many levels that I don't even know where to begin with it. Summary: I really, really liked Innocence, and I still like the franchise and Asobo Studios. I wanted to like Requiem too; I adore the soundtrack, it genuinely is the best part for me, and the acting performances are usually great even if the dialogue isn't. The set pieces and visuals are stunning (although not so much better than Innocence that it explains the absurd leap in required hardware). At the core though, it's hard to care about characters who continually make their own lives harder and keep making poor choices for no clear reason or benefit. It's hard to care about a story when it takes 7 quite lengthy chapters just to have you set off on a quest for a magical island McGuffin that's of very little narrative interest to begin with. In truth, I think the recurring dream island plotline and all its content is extremely lazy and/or extremely unimaginative deus-ex-machina style writing, and it's at the heart of some important plot beats and character moments and becomes the main plot objective by Chapter 7. It feels so video-gamey compared to the comparatively subtle and, again, grounded story of Innocence. If you managed to make it through this review and any of the points I've made seem like valid concerns, playing this game may end up being a bewildering experience for you. Silly and pedantic things I couldn't stop thinking about: Why does Amecia refuse to carry a light source? She absolutely will not take anything useful with her, no matter how many sticks/torches/lamps/candles you attempt to loot. If it burns for more than 10 seconds, she's just not interested. She can carry multiple bottles of alcohol on her person right from the start, and infinite rocks, but only has room for 3-4 crossbow bolts, without which the huge and heavy crossbow is just dead weight. She needs to loot disposable knives to unlock doors despite having the tools, materials and crafting skill to make a reusable prybar.Show moreShow less

I jumped into this game minutes after finishing its prequel, Innocence, being absolutely captivated and wanting more. Unfortunately, for me Requiem misses the mark that the original game set so much, that I got bored with it to the point of not being interested in playing anymore. Game play mechanics got bloated. In Innocence, you make your way through a quasi-linear level using puzzle solving skills, choosing the right tools at the right time. In Requiem, a level is a vast, open area infested with rats and guards with an exit on the other side. "Here's some enemies, here's some tools to eliminate them - knock yourself out." It's pure stealth-action in a world where hiding in the shadows means rabid rats will eat you alive - what could possibly go wrong? But Plague Tale isn't about the mechanics as much as it's about the story, right? Indeed, Asobo seems to have hired more expensive voice actors and now the whole story is like a lame-ass Netflix drama. Dialogue is way more melodramatic and artificial. Characters don't sound, think or behave like the adolescent kids that they are. Your teenage female protagonist is capable of single handedly taking down a platoon of grown armed men (which she blatantly enjoys) while your pubescent male sidekick won't shut up about how killing is bad and you should stop. The game keeps deliberately shoving combat down your throat in order to prove a point that the character you're playing as is bloodthirsty with vengeance. Meanwhile, you keep hearing dialogue of disapproval: exasperated exclaim "We must do something!" while removing any and all of your options to do anything about the current situation. "No more killing!" proclaims your partner, mere seconds before you encounter a section where you are forced to murder 3 people. Requiem feels nothing like the original game and I uninstalled it feeling utterly disappointed.Show moreShow less

Heavy spoilers ahead: Okay, I've calmed down and will make a proper review, this is still a very negative review and there's nothing really wrong with the game in terms of bugs, my issue is with the story itself. I don't typically make reviews for games because I typically don't care enough to try, even if it's bad. This game is different, it's graphically beautiful but the story is just bad. (at least in my opinion) The good: -Mechanics are overall solid, it's a stealth/resource type game, it's not complicated at all and it works as intended. -Graphics are stunning, it's a very pretty game and a lot of detail went into it. The bad: - I'll start by saying half of the attitude of the characters doesn't make sense. Everyone acts like killing is wrong, then ten seconds later say "♥♥♥♥ it" and tell you to kill 'em all. Then 10 minutes after that tell you killing is wrong again....pick an ideology and stick with it. I have the most amount of issues with this right here, medieval Europe wasn't a soft place where everyone though killing was wrong, and I despise how someone will act horrified that guards are murdering everyone then get butthurt when you have to kill them. At one point you have a pirate/smuggler act surprised that you kill a bunch of slavers who are taking random people are chaining them to trees so they can slit their throats to attract rats. - Both the protagonists and antagonists are brain dead which makes me feel like everyone is an idiot in general. So through out the game the protagonist pisses a number of groups off, how these groups respond is pretty stupid. The mercenary/ex-knight is probably one of the most annoying, he's angry you killed his people, but all the sudden the child uses rats against him and he wants your help to kill an old enemy of his, except he's completely okay when he finds out you basically collapsed his homeland with rats, I guess your home being annihilated is alright as long as you kill one random count who beat your ass in a war? okay...that's dumb. Later on you betray him and get him captured but he's cool after you save him or something. If that guy holds onto grudges that badly, I'd at least expect him to try to murder them again or something but he doesn't. -The count is just as bad in terms of intelligence, He starts a cult after he finds the ruins and reads about the previous plague bringer and turns it into a way for his wife to cope with loosing the ability to have kids of her own. He finds out the kid is responsible for the rat plague, then attempts to kidnap him so his wife can take car of him, kidnap the kid whose causing a flood of doom rats that plague everyone and destroy everything in their wake, yes, that will go well. So when the plague carrier kills his wife, he acts angry, because who would have thought the kid that's wiped out sections of Europe would be a danger. -The lack of intuition in general: There are several things about this that bug me, the ideas and choices that are made and the arguments characters have are just plain idiotic. Like telling the kid not to use his powers, then telling him to use them because you got a bit of a headache, then freaking out with the consequences of him using his power. Everyone in the story is basically a killer, the plague carrier wiped out huge swaths of land and continues to do so, but he's somehow innocent. The protagonist has to kill a lot of people in her way, but people around her constantly tell her it's wrong then tell her to hurry up and kill more when things start getting more dangerous. Also he apparently does the stereotypical idiotic villain thing of playing with someone he's going to kill because reasons....and then gets his wife killed by the plague kid. -The protagonist is knows she had to kill people but refuses to pick up 99% of the weapons around her to do it, she is strong, she can pull back a crossbow's string on the move with one hand in order to shoot bolts at people (I will concede that crossbows can't go through plate armor, I hope you're happy to those who complained). She finally does pick up a sword towards the end of the game and drags it along the ground like she can't hold it, but can pull back a crossbow string on the move which would be between 100lb-150lb's of tension...okay, that makes no sense. Yes she fell down a flight of stairs, but like 10 minutes later she can use her crossbow like it's nothing, so she's clearly not that injured, again very poor writing along the way. -There's also a point where you escape from a prison at the beginning of the game, and there are weapons EVERYWHERE, weapon stands with crossbows, swords, bows, halberds, spears, shields....she ignores 100% of it to go find her sling, I've never seen more idiotic writing. Fine you like you sling, I'll leave like an attachment, but there's nothing stopping you from picking up something else to bolster you until you get your stuff. -The morality again makes no sense overall, its like everyone in the game was purposely written badly. The villains and the protagonist, you don't need to be a bad-ass, but there needs to be some strength and cunning from both sides. Villains need to be threatening and dangerous. Protagonists need to have cunning, what you lack in skill you make up for in other ways. She didn't need to be the most bad-ass person but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, it seems like no effort was put into the story itself. The only threat was the rats, and towards the end the kid learned how to control them so that was thrown out the window. There are so many moments where I can't understand why people are reacting in the way that they do, you're constantly being attacked by a bunch of people who kill everyone around them, but it's "bad" to kill them in self defense? Didn't these same people deal with the same problem in the last game, didn't they kill a ♥♥♥♥ ton of people? TL;DR: The graphics are great, the mechanics are mostly fine. The story is trash. Also like I said earlier fine to the nerds who explained that crossbows can't go through plate armor, but can crossbows magically make it also fall a part? Also apparently you can't make people in plate armor catch on fire either, even when covering them with tar, I didn't realize plate armor gives you +100% fire resist.Show moreShow less
