Well, its a short little experience. Fly, climb, trade, collect, talk, and so forth around a small contained island with a mountain. My quick summary is, I give this a "technically, not recommended", which is not the same as "I disliked the game and think its bad." Mechanics Its difficult to say much, either critique or praise, or analyze such games because of their brevity. For what it is, the game is presented with enough robustness in each of its mechanics that none of them felt really unpolished or rough. Flight mechanics are quite pleasant even. I think if I can say anything, there was not enough of an experience for me to say that, yes, I had fun. I wasn't bored, frustrated, or annoyed, but I wasn't excited, compelled, or intrigued either. The game merely did not exhaust my patience in exploring it. I wonder if the devs plan to do more with these mechanics and make a game with more depth out of it? I'm sure there's potential and the artstyle lends a certain charm to it as well. Simplicity and style in art and robust mechanics is a great way for indies to go. I think they could easily move towards making several other types of games with the same mechanics here, if they so chose. Game performed with no issues or glitches. I think my only complaint is that at fullscreen at my 2k resolution, the game is VERY much zoomed in too strongly for sitting at my desk. Everything scales up too closely. Run it in windowed. Also, if using the Steam Controller, remap Mouse-Like Joystick on the right pad to Joystick Camera. Story As for the story, well, again the experience is a brief one. There's a fairly cliche emotional hook at the peak of the small story, which doesn't speak much because there's little to build on, but I guess that's fine too. Its as acceptable and arbitrary as any other, although, maybe its just my personal fatigue for such things. A lot of other games, especially short walking sim type games which have some overlap with this title, use such hooks and give little in the way of development or investment for the player to want to nibble at to get reeled in. The writing is also very... millennial, I say as a millennial. Unconditional positivity and affirmation, stereotypical character traits of exaggeration and arbitrary 'random' motivations, certain figures of speech, etc. A scalper is even given motivation for his behavior from his student loan debt. There's not a more 'millennials will vibe with this' motivation you can give a character than that. There's nothing wrong with all that, per se. Its just a style and a choice. To me its all a little saccharine sweet, and I prefer a different flavor. Other people like that flavor I don't, and that's okay. If I hated it in this game I would say so, and I'm not. Let your own preferences guide you. Conclusion Its too short for me to say 'Yes, I recommend you purchase this, so you may have the experience for yourself.' I'm sure you'll enjoy what there is if the preview appeals to you, as it did to me. I like birds, this had a bird character and you fly around, so that was neat. If it is on sale for a paltry amount in some future sale I'm sure it will be worth your time.Show moreShow less
I have been having a horrible time in my life lately, and on the day of playing it was an especially terrible day, crying and grief all over. I realized that I needed to do something to get my mind off of my stress, and so I booted up A Short Hike, which I bought as per a recommendation of my friend. And then, after the opening cutscene, I started exploring the island. I followed the path as I could, my mind still filled with worry from my life, and I didn't think much as I wandered off the path. Yet as I played more and more, the terrible stress felt a lot, lot smaller, and by the time that I got to the point of fishing over and over, I forgot it was even there. At the end, I finally climbed the summit, flew down, and cried very much. It was just that beautiful. It was a perfect escape. And being away from my pain for even just two hours was everything I needed. This game is especially calming. The characters are so interesting and charming. Even with such little dialogue I got a good picture of all of them—they felt very real. If you're having a bad day, a bad week, a bad month, whatever, set some time aside and play this game. Take your time. Go soaring for a while. It'll all be okay.Show moreShow less
This one is tough. I made it a priority over an ever-increasing backlog because it was so highly rated. I understand all of the reviews saying that this game is relaxing and reminiscent of Animal Crossing and all of that, but ultimately, I didn't think that "story" had enough of a payoff and the gameplay itself wasn't very fun or satisfying. It's not that this is a bad game. It just isn't the must play title that I associate with the "Overwhelmingly Positive" tag.Show moreShow less

Mixed. First the controls - you do not get to control the camera, and you move on an angle with the arrow keys. An automatic camera, with occlusion, angled movement, and no in-game tracking map (even if a map is a late-game find) make this hard to recommend. I guess it was made for consoles and PCs were an after-thought. Knowing that, you should use a controller if you do not despise them. Normally, I enjoy games like this with reasonable collectibles and different quests from NPCs. Unfortunately, the movement is annoying with a keyboard, and do not get me started on the boat controls! Without a map, I could find a plant that needs watering and need to backtrack to a place I can fill my bucket. When the camera reorients itself, I have to remember which way I want to go. Overall, the game is decent but would be much more enjoyable with an in-game map and controls meant for a keyboard (and mouse). this is like everything you wanted animal crossing to be before you actually played it and figured out that it is a capitalism simulator full of predatory psychological manipulations. take everything that sucks out of animal crossing and make it into a short, fun game about exploring, and you have a short hike. a perfect game, pretty much.Show moreShow less
Everyone's definition of 'a relaxing game' is going to vary and so is what they like in a game. Personally, I hate extremely difficult or mechanically driven games. Unfortunately, for me, platforming falls into that group of games. This has a lot of jumping puzzles, and platforming. A lot. In fact, almost from the getgo you are doing it. What's worse is the controls are really imprecise, and drifty. The ground often has a lot of slide, it's hard to judge depth, it's hard to judge height, it's hard to judge distance. To me, that's super unfun. The dialog is cute, but sometimes I accidentally double clicked due to my reading speed, which initiated the dialog again because I was at the end, putting me in a loop where I had to intentionally slow myself down. Some of the longer conversations this is really tedious. The graphics are eye straining too. Supposedly there's a way to enhance or change the visuals, but it wasn't presented to me in game. It's true there's no punishment for 'failing' to do something, but it's also not fun to make guesswork out of attempting to do it over and over when if the controls, or camera, or visuals were just a touch better in any direction you'd have accomplished what you were trying to do.Show moreShow less
A Short Hike is a relaxing, casual game about exploring an expansive, mountainous island park and eventually making your way to its summit so you can get cell phone reception. You play as Claire, a bird who can climb, glide, and flap to great heights using a stamina system based upon how many golden and silver feathers you’ve collected. Along the path to the mountaintop you’ll encounter Animal Crossing-style characters who are friendly, punny, and usually have some minor task for you to solve, ranging from finding lost items to making deliveries. Helping residents of the island is completely optional, as is just about every activity in the game other than locating a few feathers and reaching the summit; as a result, length can range from an hour if you don’t stop to smell the roses to a few hours if you decide to make friends with everyone and see all the park has to offer. Activities include filling out a fishing journal by trading in your catches, digging in suspicious spots, solving treasure map clues, parkour racing, and opening up shortcuts by breaking blocked entrances and watering bouncy flowers. A Short Hike has a charming aesthetic and a lovely, peaceful soundtrack. I felt driven to see everything the game had to offer despite not being forced into any of it and never lost interest until I did so. It’s a beautiful little world that will make fans of Animal Crossing feel right at home.Show moreShow less
This game is just not for me. The music is nice and it is relaxing but I just wanted to finish the game and be done with it. The characters were bland and the exploration was just ok. I don't really see what all the hype is for this game, it was just ok for me.Show moreShow less
