I want to start this off by saying I love this game to death, and that if you find this game on sale, I highly recommend you check it out and play through what there is to offer. It’s a beautiful game with an in-depth combat system, detailed graphics, unique costumes, and gorgeous landscapes. With that being said, I can’t recommend this game at full price for a few reasons I’ll dive into. Absolver is one of the, if not best disappointing games I have ever played. What I mean by that is this game does not have enough substance and content to be deemed as great or outstanding, but there's enough passion and entertainment in this game to give just as much happiness and fun as you'll have sadness and disappointment. Now, if Absolver was still being worked on with new content, areas to explore, an active player base and events, then I could easily recommend this game and look forward to the new things to come. Unfortunately, development for Absolver has been canceled since around August of 2019. The game comes as it is, and since it hasn’t seen any attention from its developers for 6 months now, it's safe to say it’ll stay this way for the remainder of its lifespan. On the bright side, servers are still currently up, which means you can still interact with players online, as well as play with your friends. I want to start by talking about the style and world of Absolver, since it’s one of the first things that attracted me to this game. The world is a vast and beautiful land with a variety of forest and temple-like areas. It’s style is similar to Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, but there's still so much uniqueness and originality in this game that it stands on its own. Every player must wear a mask, but there's so many different masks and outfits to choose from, that each player can customize themselves to look and fight the way they wish. It gives all who play it a sense of individuality, being able to tell their own story and do as they please. The amount of freedom you are given, despite the fact that the game isn't an open world game, but instead free roam, is simply incredible. This game has an amazing combat system, which you, the player, are able to customize fully to your liking. On top of that, the A.I. are can be challenging to fight and are capable opponents for the most part, being the enemy A.I. use the same moves and combat the players do. In fact, countering enemy attacks will allow you to slowly learn those said attacks and add them to your inventory, so that you can build up your attacks and use them against the enemies. That factor alone keeps the PvP and PvE consistent, making both choices of gameplay equally as fun. Even by the time I stopped playing this game, the combat never got stale, nor did I feel burnt out over it. Even though the A.I. are a joy to battle against, I do have to admit that the most fun I had playing this game was fighting with and against friends. The game allows 3 player co-op, so you and 2 other pals can go out and explore the world in front of you. Even though you’re banded in an alliance with your teammates, there is no way to turn friendly fire off, meaning you still have to watch where you’re attacking so as to not hit your buddies. I really appreciated this because it meant you couldn't just spam attacks on one enemy, you’d still have to strategize together and figure out collectively how to counter enemies. Even though nowadays, it can be hard to find other players online walking around and doing activities, there's still a good amount of multiplayer based game modes to choose from. There's the Downfall expansion where you can tackle a dungeon on your own, or invite some friends to take down a big baddie and get some good points. Then there’s 1v1s, where you’ll get matched up with an opponent online, best out of 2. Lastly, and mostly, there's 3v3 tdm and point capture. This was and always will be the most fun I have ever had with this game. One time, I got together 5 friends who owned the game, and we all competed in a 3v3 point capture match. It was extremely intense yet insanely fun. Lots of laughs and battle screams were shared with each other that day, and it'll always be known to me as the greatest gaming experience with my friends for the year of 2019. If you’ve been reading up to this point, then you’ll notice that for the most part, I’ve had nothing but praise to say for this game. I didn’t even get into detail about the school system, weapons, shop, bosses, and final areas that I enjoyed in this game. This is where I have to be realistic with my overall verdict with the game. As much as I love this game and everything it has to offer, I could still only milk what it gave me in under 40 hours until I stopped playing. There's just not enough content built around what this game does to sustain it. For all the fancy outfits, luscious areas, and challenging foes, there's only so much provided to the point where you’re just looking for more that isn't there. You can beat the entire game around 5-6 hours, and from that alone, you've seen almost every enemy and area there is to see. The multiplayer experience is a blast and still worth checking out. However the current state of the games player base is so dead, you’ll be lucky to encounter a 1v1 match. 3v3’s are almost nonexistent, and the only real way to experience them now is if you gathered 5 friends or people from the community and planned a match up with them, which isn’t always doable. The last thing I saved to talk about this game, is the story. Usually, the story is the first part to review, but for this particular game and what it means to me, I had to leave the story for last. If nothing else, Absolver’s story is extremely lacking, and is the most disappointing part of this game. In the story, you, the player, are the chosen one, and must defeat some bosses. That’s really about it. There are a total of 2 big bosses and 1 final boss, who each have a bit of personality but overall hold nothing more than a challenging time. The end boss is super rewarding, and when you beat her, it seems like the story is finally taking off. She escapes, and you officially become an Absolver, now ready and prepared for new and daring adventures. Except you aren’t, because that's where the story ends. Right when it feels like the story had started, it already ended, and leaves you feeling nothing more than sheer disappointment. It honestly saddens me that the community has put more love and effort into the game than the developers have themselves, spawning plenty of interesting lore and talented fan art. Although I have no hope for the developers returning to the game and adding onto it, there is one small hope I still have in the back of my mind. I wish for the developers to open up a workshop or open sandbox for the players to create and customize at their free will. If this was open, there wouldn’t be a need for the developers to do any more, as the community would be more than willing to expand the game with mods and campaigns. The Absolver discord, subreddit, and steam page shows more than enough proof that the community is extremely dedicated to the game, and I hope that the devs take note of that one day. That's all I have to say about Absolver. I really do love this game and could go on for hours about what I love, but being it’s given me an equal amount of emptiness and disappointment, I believe I’ve already given this review too much effort and attention. A TL;DR I like writing long reviews, this is the short version: Categories Ranking Short summary Value $30 It's worth it's money, and you'll enjoy yourself. It's absolutely OK, but nothing new Visuals 10 Visuals that really captures you the very moment you begin World Design 8.5 It's not on the level of Dark Souls, but certainly not far off. More simple to understand, and easier to navigate All in all 8.2 The gameplay is where it shines, and it does so much brighter than my future. An Absolver Review I've alway loved three-dimensional fighting games. They tend to be a hit and miss (pun not intended) with both mechanics, story, and it's overall "Wow i like this"-scale. This is a hit on two out of those three. The fighting itself is marvelous; It's fluid, tactical, based on practise, You must understand the moves being given, and you can even get new moves in a very realistic way; by practise and getting attacked. This is not a game you pick up for 10 mins and go: "I know everything now"; You get the game, play it for 10 mins, and you understand the basics, how it all works, but you don't know how to utilize it properly yet. That's for later, when you begin getting good, understanding, analyzing attacks/combos and so forth. This might perhaps sound daunting, but It really isn't. Even from the beginning you'll be satisfied with what you can achieve with the moveset pre-made for you (yes, you can actually make your own combos, and then choose EVERYTHING you want in your moveset). The mechanics are so brilliant, it's all put together in an easy-to-understand way, and combined with a fabulous UI; I can honestly say I'm in love. The game is set up very similar to darksouls games, except you need to defeat smaller bosses all over the map in order to move on to the next area; which is very straight forward, and plain simple to understand straight off the bat. You can literally go and fight any player you'd like that joins the server (or hub) you're currently in, and it's all very fair game from both the players and the restrictions made by the developers. The one thing that really gets me going are the damn camera angles, I don't understand why they need to glitch out the second they hit a wall. If you get crammed into a corner, it's impossible to fight back; because you can't see anything at all. Other than this it's all pretty damn good. The story is vague, and not really interesting at all. From what I've interpreted it's about this person getting chosen to become an absolver, and he needs to go through all of these trials in order to become one: which is what the game is all about. There are some NPC's around, vaguely going into lore about the location you're in and so forth, other than that there's not really much to it. Then again the story really isn't the main aspect of this game. The only really major drawback is the abundance of bugs currently infesting the game, some are game-breaking, some plain annoying, and others hilarious. It just got released, and I've got faith that the developers keep in touch with the community, and solve the issues we have. It's a very loveable game that can get you a little pissy, and extremely satisfied with accomplishment at the same time. I've come to understand it's not an unpleasant feeling at all. I was stuck in my chair for 5 hours after launching, and I met a random dude that was really nice, and we beat the entire first area together. The multiplayer interaction is really well implemented with the only means of communitcation is via gestures, or by adding the person on steam. A very short summary All in all it's a game I'd recommend to fans of fighting games, the kind where you need to get good, and then you're safely allowed to brag about it, only to be called either a stuck-up cocky pleb, or a cheater. It feels so damn good to demolish beta players. Have fun! EDIT I easily forgot i bought the game for $20 due to it's pre-order being at that price; or 180NOK. My apologies! I've put a lot of time in this game and have had a real blast with it (for some of that time, at least). I really wish I could recommend this game because it has a lot of great ideas and a style and personality that really work for me personally. Mechanically, deckbuilding is fun and the fighting is full of tension and excitement. It comes so close to being a fantastic game that it's a real shame that I have to recommend against it. Firstly, the developers have not only proven to be chronically inept at balancing their game, but have all but said outright that they've finished with it. So this is it. No further content to be expected and the glacial speed of balance fixes will probably reach that much closer towards absolute zero from here on out. If you expect to go deep into deckbuilding and style mastery, which are more or less the endgame goals of the PvP (the main content of the game), you may be frustrated that the majority of moves, most powers and some styles are simply irrelevant considering how terribly updates (and lack thereof) have crippled them or made their competitors superlatively strong by comparison. I understand that the developers are having a bit of trouble right now and need to prioritise new ventures that'll keep the company going, but them abandoning ship at such an unhealthy state of gameplay doesn't bode well for the game's longevity. Furthermore, the 'community' for this game in my region (OCE) is the most toxic and petty group of people I've ever seen despite how small it is and how tight-knit it should be for a population-challenged indie fighting game. Trashtalk and salt are an expected part of fighting games and this one's no different, but for some reason this game's community goes beyond playful jabs between rivals and towards constant whining and mean-spirited belittling. While I would maybe go out on a limb to recommend the game itself in a vacuum, this is fundamentally a PvP game, so it's inevitable that you'll run into these people and I simply cannot in good conscience recommend such an experience to anybody seeking a good way to spend their time. I suppose if you're a masochist that enjoys waiting literal hours for a match only to be paired with someone that very likely will get incredibly salty when losing and rub things in your face when winning (talking trash about you on Discord regardless of outcome), then this is the perfect environment for you. Never Reveiw (2018): Absolver isn't as fun as it used to be. Despite fixing many of the bugs that were present in the early stages of the game, and adding a ton of new content, something about the way the game as evolved has sapped some of its unique charm. At its core, Absolver is a PVP fighting game with a ton of custimization and a very high skill curve. It is difficult, rewarding, and has lots of character. I love this game, and its probably one of my favourite games of all time, but it has become very very challanging to enjoy. And to be honest, the way a newbie experiences the game and the way a veteran experiences it are so different that it's difficult for me to know what it is like coming into absolver at its current stage of development. Lots of stuff has changed, so yeah let's just get into it. What has been fixed: 1. Random bugs - I hardly see any of these anymore. Not much else to say, things arent broken like they used to be, and its really nice. 2. PVP Veteran Monopoly - There are a lot more noobs now, and I am really happy for that simple fact. As I mentioned in the older review, Absolver had previously catered to a handful of veterans who just honed their skills all day, making it really hard for new players to approach PVP at all. Whether lots of veterans have left the game or there has been an influx of new players, PVP has become a lot more friendly to people without top teir skills. 3. Lack of item content - They added a bunch of items, and they keep adding more. Plenty of gear to get nowadays, and depite the majority of it being locked behind PVP, its still a lot more acessible than it used to be for reasons mentioned in #2. What has not been fixed: 1. Lack of (other) content - Map is the same size it always was, PVE is still underdeveloped, and not much has been added to the core game itself. However, the new PVE update gets released in september, so fingers crossed that it will help mitigate this issue. Newer issues: 1. Tutorial - The tutorial teaches you how to fundamentally use all the game mechanics, but not how to play the game or use them well. Because the skill curve and variable use of these core mechanics takes on such a difficult and specialized nature, it can be very difficult for new players to understand what they are doing wrong when losing to skilled opponents, and it takes a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of losing to get the hang of winning. If you can find a mentor to give you tips and advice on how to play the game well, gaining skill can go much faster, but all too often people just have to get into higher tier play by getting the ♥♥♥♥ beaten out of them time and time again, which is appealing to hardly anyone. It takes a lot of grit to become good. 2. ??? - As I mentioned, Absolver has lost some of its magic, but I cant really point my finger at anything in particular. In general it feels far more competitive and far less fun than it has in the past. Its rare to find any polite opponents these days, and people have become so focused on winning that fighting them is just... annoying. Its annoying when they attack you while you are bowing to them, spam meta abilities, or just behave like ingrates in a general sense. I really dont understand why a laughing emoji was nessecary, because just about the only way you can use it is to be toxic. The game has no chat, but people find ways to be cruel nevertheless. As a veteran, I can generally kick their assess while still being polite (mabye just in the hope that they will finally bow back XD) but to noobs its hard not to convert to the same style of sand-in-the-eyes combat. That said, there are still a ton of nice players, its just that there are more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ than ever. 3. Game balance - Meta meta meta... Absolver didn't used to have an abusable meta, but there definantly is one now. Its a bit frustrating, but thats the way things go. You dont need to use the meta to be good, but it is still annoyingly strong. What is good about the game: Its super unique, creative, and completely customizable. Combat feels great, and the universe is well thought out and very colorful. Lots of items, great PVP, and its just so cool. Basically the coolest melee PVP game out there, simply because you can make a fighting style that is completely your own and master it. Make a school, teach other people, hone your combat skills- its really pretty great. I have spent more time talking about its issues than its strengths, but if you want to know what makes it so awesome just watch some gameplay, or even the trailer videos. What you see there is what you get, I just felt its more important to tell you about what you cant see. So yeah, such a great game, and all things considered, I reccomend it for the gem that it is. Absolver is one of my favorite fighting games, however I can't really recommend it for new players. Absolver may have really good combat mechanics and some amazing art style/visuals. It's one of those games where you actually feel a sense of progression as you continue playing; not only does fighting feel satisfying but you also get the sensation that you are getting better. Despite all this there are some setbacks that stop me from recommending it to everyone. The game has a very small active community so it's pretty much dead. This wouldn't be a major problem if the PvE had more content, unfortunately the main story is very short, you can beat it under 2 hours. There are endgame dungeons but they are just small linear caves with a boss at the end. Not only do they lack the artistic details of the main game but also lack the exploration aspect of it, making it repetitive and (in my opinion) boring. Unless you have some friends to tag along, those dungeons are probably not gonna be fun. The other side of the endgame is the PvP, which is a little more active, but most people there have spent hundreds of hours into the game, know most of the moves and have the coolest looking gear, so a new guy is probably gonna get his ass kicked without standing much of a fight. That's a big turn off for most people who simply want to fight someone on their level, but you could always try to improve and learn until you stand a better chance. It really depends on the person. TL/DR: Pros: Good artstyle, great and satisfying combat system Cons: Game is basically dead, lacks singleplayer content, the PvP is tough for new players. Few things to know before you buy the game. 1. It's heavily based around PvP 2. Easy 2 learn, hard to master. 3. Very difficult PvN. 4. Little to no story or endgame to speak of right now. If you're not into difficult fighting games, you will not have any fun here. Still around? Great! It is an amazing game with a solid foundation and solid idea of a duell fight game sort of thing. You create your own character. You have alot of customization for said character in form of different gear, masks AND even your fighting style and your attacks which also offer alot of customization. Imagine For Honor where you decide your own attacks. The graphics are very simplistic and stylised. This has the potential to be something really great. I've spent nearly 90 hours playing this game. Where this games faults lie, is in the fact that there is not nearly enough content. Game mechanics work great, fighting is engaging and fun, intuitive and encourages experimentation. However, the superb combat system isn't coupled with any real reward or end game. The developers released this game way too early, with too little content. Once you've learned all of the moves and fought in combat trials endlessly and gotten a set up with your character you like, there really doesn't seem to be any incentive to continue playing. There aren't any global rankings for fighting, there is one Combat Trial mode (1v1). The single player/co-op experience is so unbelievably bland it's almost not worth doing. The map isn't nearly large enough to hold anyone's attention past 20 hours, and there simply aren't enough different enemy types OR bosses to keep interest once you've mastered the combat system. This game comes off more as a tech demo for a unique and very well executed fighting system than a full game. I really love the aesthetic, the sound, the style, the feel, and the movement of Absolver. It plays very well - when the p2p connections aren't absolute ass - which brings up another point. The development team for this game doesn't seem capable of ever fixing their server/connection issues. The hit registration is some of the worst I've seen in a game when it does go bad. The net code seems to need a complete overhaul and I don't think Sloclap is at all capable of delivering on this front. Absolver, while an amazingly interesting game and concept, just doesn't stand the test of time and really isn't going to provide any real long term satisfaction. Again, I really enjoy the combat system, however, it definitely left me wanting more. A LOT more. I wouldn't recommend this game for it's current asking price because it's fairly clear this was rushed out the door as a cash grab and I'm almost certain there aren't any real intentions to add new Combat Trail modes (even though the padlocks at the top would imply there are at least 3 other modes coming). Updates did not come quick enough and it completely and utterly destroyed this game's fanbase. Hooked an audience but the bait wasn't sufficient enough to keep us from jumping ship.Show moreShow less
