I was actually one of the translators for this game and was promised a free copy of it upon returning the .txt file. It's in the game right now, I spent hours upon hours writing it and when sending an email to the developer, I received no reply for weeks. Decided to buy it however due to having to wait for it for approx. 2 years. The concept is brilliant, yet simplistic. For those who love maps and history but don't enjoy the militaristic aspect of HOI4 and EU4, it seems like THE one. However, the developer gave up on updates, failed to interact with a loyal fanbase for months and treats the people who poured hours into helping him no respect. Ignoring the background info, the game itself isn't terrible. The idea behind it was revolutionary I would say but fell short.Show moreShow less

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME As much as it is fun. The Lead Developer has abandoned the game after "spending 2 years" on the product. Despite its potential. It is riddled with bugs and a disinteresting UI which leaves alot to be desired. And will stay broken for years to come as the developer has left the game, and the community in the dark. I have played this game for 30 now, so i have some experience in how the game works, and what you can do with it. So now i have made some changes to my original review, based on the things i saw in the game. Two things to keep in mind with this game: - it's just released, so a lot can still be added and changed - The first Age of Civilizations was a mobile app. That's where the core of this game comes from. That said, having played the mobile game for a bit, this game a looking way better than the previous one. But still, this game also is getting an android version, which limmits the possiblities: you need to make sure phones can handle the game. What is this game you ask? It's a turn based grand strategy game. You control a nation within a scenario (scenario's currently in the game have the timeframe 600-2018). While controlling your nation you have control over its economy, technology, diplomatic relations and military. You can go to war and take over the world. Many people that knew about this game being released got hyped because of the many different possibilities this game has to offer. It's main feature is the 1440 world map. With this scenario this game might become a competition for Europa Universalis IV. Would i compare this game to EU4? Yes and no. I don't think it is fair to compare Age of Civilizations II to that game. This game was made by 1 man, while EU4 has a whole team behind it. This is a turn based game, EU4 is real time. Does that mean this game is bad? certainly not! But it might be a little bit on the simplistic side for fans of the Paradox grand strategy games like myself. Many of the diplomatic features that are in EU4 are also in this game. That's good, although the competence of the AI is questionable. I do have hope for it though. When the game released the AI almost never declared any wars. Now (only a few weeks later!) there has been an AI update, where you can set the AI up to 400% aggressiveness. It is safe to say the AI is now more than capable to start wars. And fighting the wars is where the AI shines the brightest. I watched the AI play in spectator mode, and it is very enjoyable to see two nations going back and forward trying to invade each other. Unfortunately the AI for now isn't very good in diplomacy. It does make trade deals, asks for military access, and it loves improving relations with everyone, but it almost never makes alliances. I watched 1000 years of AI only and there were only ~ 5 alliances all including 1 province nations only. Does that mean allying is impossible? No the player can do it, and i have seen the AI accept my requests, but it doesn't make alliances on its own. The way war works is a bit too simple for me. Do you have the superior numbers? then you win. Yes you can build a fort and win with inferior numbers, but really what misses in this game is some campaign strategy. EU4 doesn't have manual battles, but the terrain and placements of forts makes the warfare strategic in that game. Here you just smash your stacks into your enemies province, and cross your fingers your enemy has less troops than you. You might say: not knowing how many troops the enemy has makes wars a constant challenge. And yes i was surprised to see my 1200 men of Ottomans get wiped out by 1500 Albanians. But not knowing, not being given the chance to make strategic decisions does not make wars fun. What about the Graphics and UI? the UI is a bit hard to figure out. I had to click around for minutes to find the screens i wanted to use. But it's all there, and grand strategy games aren't known for their good UI. Remember the endless amounts of screens, sliders and information that only pops up when you hover over it in Victoria 2? It is a real mess though. Yes there is an easy map mode button, that gives you most of the information you need, but there still are many other screens you just have to find yourself? remember i said terrain doesn't have effects? apparently it does. But good luck finding that one small button on the lower right corner where you can see the terrain in the selected province. AI: The AI works best in warfare. It likes taking risks and sending small stacks far into enemy territory. This results in really enjoyable to watch AI only wars where the war turns around multiple times when an advancement gets stopped. When the game released the AI almost never declared wars. But in one of the many updates the game had over the last two weeks after launch the AI got fixed in this perspective. There even is a slider that lets you set the AI up to 400% aggressiveness. Conclusion: It's a mixed bag, but still mostly positive. There are lots of bugs, the UI isn't good, and the warfare is a bit simplistic. It is really enjoyable. The 1 more turn mentality certainly applies to this game. Comparing this game to EU4 seems a bit unfair. If anything it's more like turn based Europa Universalis III (yes 3) light. That last point might actually be a good thing though. The game is really small, only a few hundred MB, and the requirements are so low even my University laptop that can't run Rome Total War is running it with no problem! I think this game getting its mobile release will be huge. Because while compared to popular PC grand strategy games it might lose, this game will be revolutionary on android! All those terrible free to play strategy games where you just move your troops around with no strategy or diplomacy? expect them to have a massive drop in users! Do i advice buying this game? Yes certainly! It's only €5,- so what are you waiting for!Show moreShow less

I was really excited for this game, but the developer did not deliver on his promises. He launched a game with bad AI and missing several features. This was fine, as he promised to fix it. The problem arises when he says he doesn't want to work on the game anymore and he doesn't release an update for 5 months, a time period far longer than the time for launching workshop. He lied to customers, and he does not deserve more money until he fixes this game. Do not buy. Edit: He just launched an entire new map. If he makes more updates, I will most likely change my review to recommended.Show moreShow less
