Ordinarily, I don't write reviews - but I've always been pretty invested in the Ensemble Studios games and seeing what Microsoft and Skybox have done with one of their all-time legends has pushed me into comment. Age of Mythology: Extended Edition. Ordinarily, to extend something means to prolong it or make it bigger somehow but if you're hoping for new content, this game does not have any. It's just the same game you played back in 2003 - but that's not so bad, because that game was great. This however, isn't - and there's some vital reasons as to why: 1 - The Multiplayer. The most important aspect of any Real Time Strategy game is its multiplayer community and Age of Mythology has always had a creative and thriving one. This Extended Edition would too - if the multiplayer actually worked. You don't need me to tell you, just go check out the Support forum for this game. The game suffers from consistent crashes, desync, stuttering, framedrops and lag when attempting an online game. The developers blame "ancient bugs" left over from the original game despite the fact that none of these bugs were actually present in the 2003 release and accusing the now defunct Ensemble Studios (thanks Microsoft) for being responsible for your own mistakes is downright cowardly. disrespectful and lazy especially seeing as you're now flogging their product to an unaware market. 2 - The Single Player. The AI during Single Player matches is bizarre, eclectic and at often times completely incomprehensible. Prone to suddenly stopping all activity halfway through a match for completely banal reasons (there was no food in their line of sight, you spawned too close to them etc) every Random Match is essentially a roll-of-the-dice of whether or not the AI feels like playing along this time. This problem has only been made worse by the addition of the new, COMPULSORY DLC which has 'updated' the AI to coincide with the introduction of a new civilization. Unfortunately, those who don't purchase the DLC are still obligated to download the patch, meaning they suffer from all of the bugs whilst receiving none of the reward. 3 - The DLC. Most likely what drew you to this Steam page in the first place seeing as this game hasn't seen a real increase in playerbase in almost a year. I followed the development of the DLC for a good few months and have been heavily invested in it. The attitude of the developers and their 'effort' as far as producing quality content goes is detestable. Aside from the rather invested and community-involved attitude from those at ForgottenEmpires (a small team of fans), comment and involvement from the lead developers (Skybox) has consisted of grade-1 piss-all. They spent a good few months assuring us the DLC would contain strictly new, fresh content without any reskinning, repackaging or rebranding of existing content and that turned out to be a complete lie. They also lied about having playtested the game for balance - admitting during a public streaming of the game (you can find it on Youtube) that they purposefully left the DLC broken and unbalanced as a means of making people have to play it. The DLC itsels is incredibly broken as of writing this (again, check the Support forum), with half the playerbase unable to access the DLC at all and the other half jokingly trying to laugh off the regret of their purchase. One of the developers admitted on the Subreddit that they are currently "using the public to beta test the game" - meaning that if you buy this DLC you are not getting content, you are buying into the opportunity to test unfinished content. This coupled with the fact that the developers openly laughed at the idea of fixing the Multiplayer (again, check the stream) tells me that we aren't dealing with incompetent developers - we're dealing with scam artists. I don't like having to write this sort of stuff about any Ensemble Studios IP because it sucks seeing their legacy shat on by untalented coat-tail riders, but if it means discouraging people from wasting their money on what is essentially a gigantic bug test, then it feels somewhat worthwhile. Only buy this if you absolutely *must* play Age of Mythology again and don't want to go through the effort of pirating the old copy and getting it to work - but know that this is not the Age of Mythology you played ten years ago and it certainly is not a well-supported or active game.Show moreShow less

First impressions I have to give a thumbs down. This is a pretty high price for the game considering that it's just a graphical facelift, and they even managed to make the Gods' portraits look a lot worse than the original by somehow corrupting the images. http://i.imgur.com/38qHXVB.png (Left is original, right is new messed up. Original looks better even despite having jpg compression on it because I had to get it from the web). My list of issues: 1 Corrupted graphics on portraits 2 No subtitles for tutorials after the first few lines 3 Ugly Mipmapping or other LOD transition on textures when zooming in and out.Show moreShow less

First of all, I love Age of Mythology. I played it way more than any other "Age Of" game as a kid and the game itself, along with the original 2003 "The Titans" expansion, is an underappreciated gem. This Steam Extended Edition and the new Tale of the Dragon expansion is unbalanced and flawed. There are a number of changes that really affect the gameplay, such as the new day/night cycle which Egypt makes use of. Unfortunately, the day/night cycle looks really bad and makes it very hard to actually see what's going on at times as the day/night cycle plunges you into darkness. The new units that have been added for each Civ feel very unbalanced and completely out of character with the original Civs. I don't know who thought every civ needed a healer unit or that the Atlanteans needed an onager but it really doesn't work. The enemy AI ranges from absolutely braindead to IBM Deep Blue in skill, often in a single game. I played with an AI ally on medium and it never moved its army once, it never built other town centres or even used the Titan it had made. It sat completely still, and the enemy AI did the same thing. On maps like New World or ones where you start on islands, an AI on Easy won't even build boats, transport units, it won't even fight back. In contrast, the AI on hard and Titan just seems to know the location of everything on the map and works with Skynet like precision. The AI makes really odd decisions, attacks in bizarre ways and won't utilise the maps or miracles to its advantage. On that similar note, pathfinding can be really awful at times, with your units taking the longest way possible to get to targets. They get hung up on trees and rocks, get stuck on each other. Sometimes units will ignore something shooting at them to focus fire on a villager or a random house. Walking your titan into a crowded base is agony, it circles entire buildings to attack the same building from a designated "spot". The new civilization, China, feels very odd to play. Their miracles are really boring to use, with little imagination put into their design,, and their civilisation play-style has you clicking between buildings half the time. Their upgrades are spread out across multiple buildings and they seem both weak and overpowered depending on the situation and map. I can't tell what situation or map they excel in as they're pretty poorly designed and the units have bad visual design to distinguish them from other units, are poorly voice and seem to be reskins of other units from better civs. It's a shame, given there's a great idea at the core of this civ. You also can't turn this China civ off at all, and you are basically forced to play with the Tale of the Dragon DLC to get the full Age of Mythology experience. That's right, Tale of the Dragon is COMPULSORY. The population cap is much lower than the other Age of Empires game and this really hurts AoM. You can't build up a nice large army and duke it out, and you'll hit the pop cap very quickly as the vanilla civs (Greeks, Egyptians, Norse) and almost instantly as the Atlanteans. It limits your ability to experiment and play around in combat. I have a feeling this may be a product of the awful Netcode, as the game chugs when two armies clash. Get three together and it looks like the game runs in Powerpoint. On that note, the online servers and matchmaking abilities are limited and the Netcode is pretty rubbish. There is constant stuttering as units move across the move, they jerk around, and this makes control in the heat of battle awful. Expect lag and desyncs at the worst of times, and memory issues on longer games. Don't get me wrong, you can have a fun time here. My friends and I have a blast playing this due to how unbalanced it is, with some God Powers being just so fun to use, and others making us scratch our heads laughing. If you can look past the many flaws introduced by the Extended Edition, you'll have a fun time. But at $42.95 AUD? Just get it on sale, that's way way way too much to pay. This is a flawed version of a brilliant game. This game really could benefit from the treatment that AoE 1 and AoE 2 got with their Definitive Editions. A careful restoration with appropriate balancing, AI, pathfinding, and even some future civilisations like maybe the Aztec, India, Japan, could really inject new life into this game. As it stands, this is a buggy release of a classic.Show moreShow less
+This game is a timeless classic made even better by the improved visuals. - Far too pricey for such an old gameShow moreShow less
The original game, released in 2002, which I've been playing since I was 6yrs old, has better gameplay mechanics and graphics than this new version. The devs threw off the balance by adding healers to every culture, rather than having it culture and god specific. The Chinese are overpowered, defy the original artstyle by using poor textures, and reuse the sound design of other cultures, making them sound like Atlanteans. The game does not allow you to play it without purchasing the Tale of the Dragon DLC, or turning off this DLC. This is because the Norse have an ability that automatically spawns random units from the game, and the Chinese are now included on this list. If you do not own the Chinese, and a Chinese unit is spawned by this ability, the game displays a message informing you that you do not own the DLC you are trying to use, then boots you from the game. This means that if you want to play the base game - without the debalance changes they made with the Chinese, and the stupid healers, then you are restricted only to the Atlanteans, Greeks, and Egyptians. The pop cap was not increased, unlike the other extended editions of games as well, and the textures are a lower resolution. The new night/day cycle also screws with basegame mechanics, as the egyptians get combat bonuses during the night, as according to their abilities. Normally night only activates upon the use of a God Power, but now it is in a cycle. Finally, the netcode is absolute garbage, good luck playing this online or with your friends. Seriously, you would be lucky to get 20 minutes without a desync. I hope they release a Definitive Edition of this game, like they did with Age of Empires 2, and Age of Empires 3, which stays true to the original, without destroying what made it great.Show moreShow less

I was fooled by myself, thinking this would be a great Extension to AOM, I feel that the developers and the people who worked on this (Sky box) have cashed in, knowing people will buy this regardless if they polish it well or badly because of nostalgia and the sly meta critic score that was taken from the original release several years ago. They knew there were going to be problems with this game upon release, it is disgusting to think that any company would release a product which is not up to scratch especially since the game was already released. I didn't pay the already expensive price to play a beta of a game that already exists. They have not delivered in my opinion, the AI is still terrible, the Multiplayer is lagging (reason I bought this game) and the frame rate is questionable for a game like this, the lighting effects are nothing special if not distracting and the menus are different (compared to the originals) but either way, re-mastered or not, the menus fulfilled their purpose, to be menus. I don't see how this warrants at £20 price tag. To make matters worse me and my friends are encountering problems with the steam overlay which is hindering our multiplayer experience. The steam workshop is also not working. I do not recommend buying this until the price drops and the problems with it are fixed, I will not trust this company again I thought AOE2 should have been a good indication of how they handle projects like these, I feel silly to have used the benefit of the doubt. Age of Mythology (when it is working) however is an excellent strategy game for competitive play, the multiplayer is excellent and the different civilizations are unique in terms of units, technologies and strategies that can be applied, it makes for a fresh experience on an age old formula, If only they continued after Age of Empires 3.Show moreShow less
