Half my squad wiped on the first mission while I desperately limped back to the redeployment point. I haven't had this much fun since XCOM.Show moreShow less
For this game I wish Steam had a "maybe". Aliens Dark Descent isn't a terrible game. It's worth it in a decent sale if you are a fan of the aliens franchise, but it just has several unforced errors that keep it from being great and at the same time feel rather punitive by the devs. The game-play is generally good. Like Xcom except in real time and not turn based, with very limited pausing (no pausing by default but rather a slow mo while you give orders). The missions aren't bad and the overall game design is fairly well done. I'm only about half way through the campaign and the missions are long enough to be satisfying and it seems like the game length overall is not skimped on. You level your marines much like X com or other games, field a team of 4 or 5 and level up backups when the main squad is tired or injured. You improve a base, research new weapons and are up against a time crunch where you have to complete the missions before a certain number of days have passed (right out of X com 2) All fairly common tropes done better in other games. Nothing ground breaking here, but it's all taken and set in the aliens universe which again, is compelling for fans. The devil is in the details and it is in the details where the game gets janky. it is all about the tactics you use to defeat the missions. Setting up turrets, choke points, making sure you are carful, avoiding ambushes, etc. Winning well (not getting injured) is essential to fielding your team again for the next mission. But the game dose a lot to prevent you from doing that. 1) You can not choose your movement order or order marines to move individually. Thus you can not put your guy with the most armor in front or hurt marine in the back. In areas where you need to silently snipe a bad guy before they notice you your sniper may be in the rear and you have to expose your entire squad (and get seen) before he get position for a shot. A simple marching order (that can be changed on the fly) would go a long way here, but as it is, it saps the "tactical" aspect of the game. 2) They over use cinematics that force your team into bad situations. Changes of camera angles during cinematic is common so you come out of it confused. In one instance the game warns you that you are about to encounter a very hard situation and should prepare your squad.. so I put down my 4 automated sentry guns in a nice defense-able position before opening the door with with the warning.. and the game cinematic made me run INTO the room.. changed the camera angle 180 degrees, closed and locked the door, and started a giant fight (my guns were all locked outside). So after carefully thinking through the tactics (which this game is all about) the devs basically took control of my squad and made them be super dumb. so I would lose (not packing up the guns before going in the room). 3) Random skills on marines. Having to choose between skills for your marines and not being able to get a perfect build is ok, but the randomness here seems petty. There are uber game breaking skills and near-useless skills and you get a random choice of three each level making you extremely uninvolved in how good your marine is in combat. if you get lucky skills they can be 2-3x as good as if you don't get offered those skills all outside of your control. In addition what class you become is Random. You could take accuracy skills on your marine for 2 levels and then not be offered the sniper (recon) class at level 3. There are also skills that require more than one marine to have them (team spirit) if you take it with one and don't get offered it on another you can end up wasting the skill entirely if you can't pair it. 4)There is no manual saving. This alone is a huge drawback to any game. Sorry but people have lives, and there are hour long stints in this game where you may not have hit a save point. not everyone can do that. Sure you can "manually" save by spending your precious resources when you wouldn't need to otherwise, but that breaks with the "doing well tactically" requirement of the game. But even that isn't universally available. For a game dedicated to making good tactical decisions, there is no excuse for lack of control of your squad, bad cinematic choices, random marine upgrades and potentially useless skills. No saving is just a frustration point for anyone with time constraints or children. But you may not care about those specific things and generally the game is still worth it despite them for me, but I am a huge aliens fan.Show moreShow less

Buyer beware, you can still run into the atmospheric processor terminal bug and lose you're entire game's progress if you have the wrong settings. Like limited saving, great idea until you are literally locked out of all progression except failure. Great game just don't do what it tells you to otherwise you might end up like me.Show moreShow less
The first hour is full of some REALLY rough dialog and can be very off-putting, BUT if you make it past the prologue and into the core gameplay loop of running missions and upgrading your marines/base it is much more rewarding. Prologue 4/10 Actual Game 8/10Show moreShow less
I really hate giving this game a thumbs down because I think at its core this game could be absolutely amazing. The developers absolutely nailed the atmosphere and sound design. Slowly and carefully moving through a level with your squad and fighting off waves of xenos can be extremely immersive and feel like it was taken straight from the 2nd film. However, there are multiple problems that plague this game that would need to be fixed before I could give this game a thumbs up: - Double time! Come on Team! Why are we shouting when we are actively trying to remain undetected? - The ability to give your squad individual orders. Moving your squad as a single unit works majority of the time but it quickly breaks down during engagements or when searching for items where giving individual orders would feel much more organic and add more depth. - the ability to ping/pin locations on the map - a flashlight toggle would also be extremely appreciated. I hate having to hold down my left mouse button down constantly - a compass -In general the movement and controls just feel off and I can't pin it down to just a single reason as to why that is. Playing the game just feels awkward. It feels almost like your playing a bad PC port at times.Show moreShow less

The game is great, and I love its mechanics and ambiance. But I can't recommend it right now. WHY ? Because of game breaking bugs ! Right now I'm stuck in Dead Hills final mission, my marines can't interact with a character, just after killing the boss. I click and nothing happen. This is the third time in 10 hours i've this kind of problem. And you know what's the joke ? There is NO manual saves ! Only autosaves ! Which means you have to start from scratch all over again and again... Save your money and wait until devs fix these issues.Show moreShow less
Aliens: Dark Descent is a unique and refreshing game that continues to surprise me. For those who do not wish to read the whole review, it is a stealth-RTS hybrid game that is a very unique experience. The story is written by a team that clearly loves the lore and universe of the Alien series, and the gameplay is solid, with unique mechanics and many different strategies you can try and improve as you level up. The game is, however, still hindered by its many, numerous bugs. I had to redeploy several times through my two runs. I am hoping those bugs get squashed in the future with patches. First, the good. As a long-time Alien fan who has played many of the previous Alien games on console, I bought this game immediately to support the developers. The RTS portions of the game are very well done, with level design standing out. You can stealth through the missions as much or as little as you want. Doing a more run-and-gun run through a mission is better for levelling up, while a more stealthy run can prevent more wounds and, thus, recovery time for your team. The weapons and equipment are true to lore, as is the overarching story. I truly enjoyed every minute of my two runs. To 100% this game took me two runs at just over 70 hours. This did include several redeploys due to bugs, but more on those later. What Tindalos has here is a very special and unique game, and I hope they continue to develop it. There is enough variety to do several more runs through the game if I want, and I am still discovering new tactics. I am truly impressed by this title. Tindalos Interactive and I have had a love/hate relationship. I also love Battlefleet Gothic 1/2 from their studio, but like this game, both came out with numerous game-breaking bugs. I am writing this review as of the August 1st patch, so it is much better than before from the streamers I saw playing it, but even so, I have some complaints. I had one crash to desktop throughout all 70 hours of playing; I could not replicate what happened, so I am not docking points for that. However, in the Atmosphere Processing Plant and Pharos Spire mission, there are two datapads I can see but not pick up. I had to redeploy to get them, essentially restarting the mission again. That was very frustrating. In the Tantalus Mission, the elevator would not work the first time I tried it, and again I had to redeploy. During the second run-through, it worked. Again, I lost all my progress and had to restart the mission. Being priced as it is, I expect the game to be more polished, but I must praise Tindalos for being active in forums and working on the Steam patches still. I see the Steam depots changing on work days, so it is good to know the game is being supported. My biggest wish for this game is for the custodian team of marines to keep squashing bugs and make the game even more polished than it is now. Also, some DLC would be helpful for game longevity. I want a campaign viewing it from the Wei-Yu perspective. That would have missions in the dig under the mine, about the defectors during the desperate fight against the Aliens and other missions that tie into the main game story. Overall, this game gets a 7, I would rate it at an 8-8.5, but the fact that I had to redeploy several times to get the 100% datapad achievement is unacceptable. I hope this gets fixed in the future. A must-buy for any RTS or Alien fan once bugs get fixed.Show moreShow less
First the reason for the negative review: I encountered a game breaking bug while playing, and apparently it's a bug that has existed since July in 2023. It's been nearly a year and they still haven't made any steps to correct the issue. The bug happens in the Atmospheric Processor level. There is a scripted event that is supposed to highlight a terminal that raises a bridge to progress. And for many players - the terminal just never becomes clickable. I personally tried multiple times, reloaded the save, restarted a new play through and the same bug persists. I cannot progress the story as a consequence. In this state, the game is unplayable for me. This is a shame, because it has so many things that it does right.Show moreShow less
