“A six-hundred-square-kilometer milsim sandbox with 160,000 mods that spawned DayZ, demanding ten hours just to master controls.”
Our Verdict
Arma 3 earns an 8.5 overall, and that score certifies it as the king of hardcore military simulation and one of the most influential sandboxes ever made — a game whose toolset seeded entire genres and whose depth and scale remain unmatched twelve years on. It is also a jagged, demanding, sometimes frustrating piece of software, with a brutal entry curve, a long history of performance problems, and audio that the community had to fix itself. The 8.5 holds both truths: a magnificent, genre-defining platform that asks a great deal of anyone who wants to enjoy it.
Buy it for the milsim sandbox

Buy Arma 3 if you want the most complete military-simulation sandbox in existence. This is the game for hardcore milsim fans, for players who love realistic ballistics and deliberate tactics, for would-be designers drawn to a world-class mission editor, and above all for anyone who wants the freedom to build or play almost any military scenario imaginable across land, sea and air. Nothing else offers this breadth — the combined-arms depth, the enormous terrains, the 160,000-mod ecosystem, the creation tools — and for the player whose ideal experience is a meticulously planned operation with a coordinated squad, or an afternoon spent constructing an elaborate mission in Eden, Arma 3 delivers something no competitor can. It rewards investment as completely as any game on PC, becoming a hobby and a platform rather than a title you finish, and the strong recommendation for newcomers is to find a community or unit, because Arma is at its absolute best played with organized people who share its commitment to the craft. For the right player, this is not a purchase but an enrollment.
Skip it for action, polish, or console

Skip Arma 3 if you want instant gratification or a smooth, guided experience. There is effectively no tutorial, the controls are famously complex, and the first five to ten hours can be a genuine ordeal of confusion and death that filters out anyone unwilling to invest, so a player seeking pick-up-and-play action will bounce off hard. The audio out of the box is a real weak point, criticized at launch and routinely replaced with mods, so players who care about polished sound will be disappointed until they start modding. And it is PC-only, with no console version, which is a hard stop for a large slice of potential players, while its hardware demands — especially before the 2025 multithreading fix — can punish weaker or older systems. None of these are secret flaws; they are the well-known costs of a game that pours everything into simulation depth and player freedom and almost nothing into accessibility or presentation. A player who needs a tutorial, console support, or immediate fun should look elsewhere without hesitation, because Arma will not meet them halfway.
The barriers and the genre-defining legacy

Two forces frame the final score. The first is the set of real barriers — the savage learning curve, the decade-long single-core bottleneck only resolved in 2025, the weak stock audio, the PC exclusivity — which together keep the overall from climbing higher even though the underlying simulation and content are arguably worth more for the committed player. A game this hard to enter and this long technically compromised cannot score as if it were frictionless, and the 8.5 weighs that honestly. The second force is the legacy, and it is genuinely historic. Arma 3 is not merely an excellent milsim; it is the engine and editor that incubated DayZ and the entire battle-royale phenomenon, a generative platform whose influence on modern gaming is almost impossible to overstate, sustained by a 160,000-mod community and a campaign-and-creation toolset that has kept it alive and growing for over a decade. That combination of unmatched depth, unmatched breadth, and unmatched influence makes Arma 3 historically essential, a foundational pillar of PC gaming. The 8.5 is the verdict of a demanding, brilliant, genre-defining sandbox — flawed in its accessibility, towering in its ambition, and without equal at the extraordinary thing it does.

Right before i get started - I was a massive fan of the Arma series and have been for 10+ years, it is the reason i bought my first gaming PC. 311 days ago i was Developer banned from Arma 3. The day before i received this ban i had decided to download arma after months away from it. I downloaded the game, it remembered all my mods, downloaded them then i fired the game up. Do you lads feel out of sorts some times and you sit looking at you vast steam library wondering what to play. Its kinda like choosing a film on Netflix, before you know it times up and you cant be bothered. It was like that. I sat in the in game menu for one minute (screen shot to prove it) before deciding not to play. I exited the game, steam and shut down my PC. The following day i decided i was going to fully get back into it. I loaded up my computer. Steam automatically opened but this time with a message. You have been banned from the following games (ARMA 3). It stated i was banned by the developer. I immediately thought why the hell was i banned. I contacted BI within ten minutes. The response was the same as it remains today. 'we do not deal with bans, battleye do. Please contact battleye if you need support with a ban.' BUT YOU DO DEAL WITH BANS - THIS IS A DEV BAN NOT A BE BAN???? I spent the last 10 months contacting BE who eventually responded to tell me that they did not ban me nor did they find anything on my PC that was suspicious to them at the time of my ban. They informed my my logs were 'spotless' I swung my attention back around to BI. I contacted them the other day. A chap called Dominik responded saying the ban was a battleye ban not a DEV ban. I have since sent him images of my ban stating it was a DEV ban, steams explanation of a DEV BAN which states a developer informs valve of an account that is suspicious and valve ban them. I have sent images of my conversation with BE and proof that in the two weeks before my ban i had one minute of game time which was spent in the menu. The emails have fallen of deaf ears.....No response from Dominik. I am absolutely heart broken that from the past 10 months i have been unable to play with my friends and it looks like this situation is not going to change. I am disgusted as the lack of acknowledgement and willingness to support and resolve this from BI. I have so many fond memories in Arma 2, OH & 3 but it looks like this is the end of the road for me. I will miss the random chats in game, the communities i was part of and the battles of the field. You never know, if you guys blow this up they might just let me back :)Show moreShow less
Immersive & trying // Recommended for those that cherish depth & complexity *I recommend this particularly for its multiplayer. + Extremely mod friendly; enjoys full support from the Steam Workshop + Visuals & environmental design, save for a few issues here and there (i.e. empty buildings), has largely aged well & looks fantastic + Employs a deeply challenging level of realism + Multiplayer is still very active; boasts a wonderful variety of gameplay & modded servers to choose from + Long, content-packed single player campaign; player choices do affect potential endings, as there are several + Time control is back from Arma 2; player can speed up the passage of time, which helps SIGNIFICANTLY to combat the monotony of walking/running very long distances between objectives + Enormous map/playable area + User-created scenarios & a very easy-to-use scenario creator + Boasts incredibly varied gameplay mechanics; from piloting/driving myriad vehicles & gunships, to underwater missions, & everything in-between + Map & squad mechanics are back; while they may feel clunky to use in a combat scenario, a little practice goes a long way & serves to open up a slew of options on the battlefield - Sound design is very hit & miss; some weapons sound identical to others, & vehicle sound effects tend to sound strangely muted - Dialogue is also hit & miss; while I found the voice-acting to be done largely well, some of the dialogue is a bit awful - Soundtrack often felt cheesy or inappropriate - Mission pacing often feels very uneven; I felt that it often leaned too far into the realm of the tedious in the interest of realism (shouldn't be a bad thing in theory, but for the pruposes of a video game, it can put players to sleep in some missions) - The initial learning curve is considerable, & the tutorial felt inadequate overall; mechanics are amazing on paper, but take an inordinate amount of time to master LockeProposal's Big Day Out Community Group Curator Page Serious Steam Reviews subRedditShow moreShow less

If you are an Arma fan, this game will change all that. When you spen 60$ and your computer can't run it, It will be because your computer is crappy. When you are disappointed in the complete lack of content compared to other Arma games, you will be called spoiled. When there is nothing to do offline, no point or story it's because it's still in the works even though it's a full release. When you can't eek out better than 10FPS no matter what your specs, it's because you didn't tweak enough. When you can't find a server to play on it's because you don't know the right clan. When you do get on a server and it lags, greifs and glitches, it's because you play on crappy servers. When you don't think it's realistic, it's not a sim. When you cant have any shoot'em up fun like BF it's because it is a sim. When all your other games run like a champ and are fun but not Arma3, it's not fair to compare. When you voice any of the above views here or the BI Forums you are a liar. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?163875-I-am-a-player-of-BI-games-from-OFP-CWC-Heres-what-I-thinkShow moreShow less
This is not a game for people who want fast action movie style gaming, this is a game for people who appreciate the finer things. Having done both military service and picked up MILSIM airsoft as a hobby this game is the closest you will get to what goes on in reality. There are experiences you will have in ARMA 3 that can not be had in COD or BF, experiences that will have you shaking from the adrenaline release. One that comes to mind was a mission to destroy an enemy comms tower, I was squad leader of 8 or so AI:s. As we approached the Comms tower and I told my men to go stealth, no firing unless fired upon. We moved slowly taking advantage of terrain, keeping an watchful eye for enemy patrols. Once the tower was in visual range pace slowed even more and I spent the better part of 30 minutes just looking for enemy patrols and advancing to about 200 meters from the tower. There I positioned my men to cover a wide firing arc as I had spotted quite a few patrols moving in and about the tower. I considered opening fire and probably being able to drop a good portion of the enemy before they could zero in on our position. But a firefight is always a risk, and these AI had been around for a few missions and I had started to anthropomorphize them a bit and secondly I might get hit and killed. As I considered how I would start the engagement a sudden hole opened up in the patrol pattern, I realised the tower is unguarded and I had an opportunity to do something I had not considered. I got up and ran as fast as I could towards the tower, all the time expecting the bullets to start cracking above my head. I kept scanning as I ran whizzling through bushes trying to pick a path that the least visibility to any patrols. After what seemed like far too long I reached the tower and threw out a satchel charge and another for good measure, if one would not bring the tower down it would sure attract attention. I turned around and made my way back, as I closed on my men I started ordering them to fall back, hope growing that I might get out of this alive. Falling back to about 400 meters I finally detonated the satchel charges and the tower fell, from there it was just a short run to the truck and back to Command. I had done it. I had pulled off the perfect mission, not a shot fired and all under my command back alive. That is what this game is about.Show moreShow less
While Arma 3 is a great game that I enjoy playing, I cannot support the practices of the developer and their 3rd party anticheat system by recommending this. Do not buy any Bohemia product that requires the Battleye anticheat in order to play on the vast majority of the multiplayer servers, unless you want to repeatedly buy that product every time they accuse you without evidence. If they globally ban you for a false positive, as occurred in my case, there is no recourse and no way to ever get your steam game to work properly, and on top of this it will render you unable to play 2 other products if you own arma 2 and dayz SA. Bohemia doesnt help you, and Battleye support consists of an automated message telling you that they are infallible and that your ban is legit as far as they are concerned, before they ever do any research into what occurred. For people who try to tell you things like "Oh but you can still play single player" I say "Try to play single player in DAYZ" It doesn't exist. If you get a fraudulent global ban in any arma based game, you will not be able to play DayZ SA anymore. This is denying me access to a product that I purchased in an illegal and arbitrary fashion. There is no way to get support from battleye and it has been reported many times as a scam company. One of the greatest signs of this is your ability as a consumer to contact a company. There is only one email address for battleye and it only responds with an automated message telling you that you are screwed and have to send Bohemia more money to play your games again. If you even try to find other ways to contact this "company" you will be sorely dissapointed as they have made sure to have no other public facing email accounts and no phone number that reaches a live person available to the public. In every country I know of, this is known as blackmail and fraud. PS: if you post here with some inane ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and call me a hacker like a stupid pre-teen, expect your inane ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to vanish. I am 100% a legit player like many of the other people who have been banned by Battleye for a false positive, and I am an upstanding member of multiple gaming communities, known for my legitimacy and my constant pushing for fair and balanced play. I have thousands of screenshots of my gameplay that show this, and nobody has a single shred of evidence otherwise. Plenty of other people have been slandered about being "hackers" in this fashion for the same reason, by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nitwits who know nothing of what occurred. You can do this crap on reddit where you can hide behind the internet acting like a child, but not on my review. Enjoy.Show moreShow less
If you have friends, this is a great game to play with them. If you don't have any friends, this is a great game to play alone. If you don't have the game to play, get the money for it. If you don't have the money for it, get a job. If you don't have a job, rob the bank. If you get arrested robbing the bank, at least you tried.Show moreShow less
I have 1785 hours in this game. This was an awesome game for years, then the developers found out what a DLC was and DLC'd this game to death. If you buy the basic $8 game you will not be able to play in most servers because they use the new DLC content. If you want to pick up a gun, get in a vehicle etc that is part of the DLC you will be prompted to buy it and not able to use it. I quit playing around the Marksman DLC and glad I did because they continued to pile them on. Downloaded the game to give it a shot again during this last free weekend and deleted it an hour later. The game is very clunky compared to similar games like Squad. I will not purchase another Arma game after they ruined it with so many DLC's.Show moreShow less
