Honestly there's so much cool stuff about this game. The live-action "FMV" style is extremely novel. The actor for Jimmy is genuinely unnerving. The audio engineering and atmosphere is UNPARALLELED. The visuals are mind-bogglingly beautiful without EVER dipping into the uncanny valley a single time. So why am I giving it a negative review? Because the gameplay is simply a chore. https://youtu.be/okEZwh1AFVo Jimmy as a murderer isn't menacing or mechanically complicated enough to be scary for long stretches of time. He says creepy stuff like "I see you" and "you're the rudest guest I've ever had," and "YOU'RE DEAD MEAT, MAYA" and you listen to the sounds coming from the hallway to tell how far away he is. I wish I could listen to how far away Jimmy is, but my character insists on mouthbreathing 90% of the time which covers up important audio queues, as well as on the 2nd floor a constant banging making it difficult to hear footsteps (and later, on the first floor, the sound of a BLARING TV show that seemingly has no origin point and cannot be turned off under any circumstance). Jimmy has 3 audio volumes: incredibly far away (you can barely hear footsteps), moderately far away (very reverb-heavy), and very close (no reverb, very intimately close-sounding creaky footsteps and voices). You can hold D to turn down the audio for a few seconds and hear clearly, but this is marginally useful, especially since this only affects the ambient "soundtrack" noise and not the BLARINGLY LOUD TV station, wind, or banging sounds. Jimmy as an antagonist often falls flat in terms of adding tension. The gameplay goes as follows: 1.) Get the spirit box 2.) Use your mirror to get a very obvious clue where to go. 3.) Go to the area and use the mirror again to get an even more obvious clue, like the room number, a relevant item like a blade or drawing, or the specific area you have to go to. 3a.) Attempt to navigate the hallways while your mouse's arrow icon rotates constantly between left and right (or turn around) making it very likely you'll accidentally go a direction you don't want to, since there's an easing motion on the arrow itself that will make you go in a direction before you're fully aware that you will, since your direction will change before the brief rotation animation has time to finish playing out. 4.) Do all of this before Jimmy arrives on the floor (you have about 1-2 minutes before Jimmy will arrive and begin searching for you and this shortens the farther in the game you get). If you want to continue looking around unobstructed, just make your way to the elevator/stairs and come back later so you can abuse the grace period again to search without a murderous clown man constantly wasting your time and forcing you to get lost. 5.) Continue searching around the area until Jimmy either kills you or spots you. 6.) Run into a nearby room and hope he doesn't see you. If he sees you and starts unlocking your door, hide in the bathroom or the wardrobe and hope the RNG doesn't kill you, as he'll sometimes open the door and hit you in the head, seemingly from bad luck (this only happens when you hide in the bathroom, yet you are always safe in the cabinet). 7.) When you "die," go back to the first floor and get the spirit box Jimmy stole from you. 8.) Repeat. It's often faster to just let Jimmy kill you, retrieve your spirit box, and continue unobstructed, since "dying" clears him from every floor. I watched John Wolfe play this (which prompted me to buy it) and even he seemed really exasperated by the end of the second episode, like he was enjoying the overall package but hated the moment-to-moment gameplay, and after playing it for as long as I have I completely understand why. It's just very slow, the tension wears off incredibly quickly, and it ends up feeling like an extremely tepid game of cat and mouse where you just have to hope you won't get lost and end up getting chased the wrong way down a hallway only for both doors to be locked, and attempt to crack the oftentimes cryptic "puzzles." It's a puzzle game that wants to be a horror game, but it leans too little on the horror element to the point where Jimmy ends up being more of a nuisance than anything. And solving puzzles ends up being "spin in circles until you look in the right direction to activate the cinematic." It's also kind of dumb that Jimmy never kills you, he just gives you an infinite amount of retries and steals your spiritbox and puts it in the same exact place every time. I get that this was likely implemented because otherwise the game would need to have a "permadeath" design mandated, but contextualizing being bludgeoned repeatedly is a confusing idea from a consistency standpoint. If he simply grabbed you and you blacked out and woke up in the same room every time, I'd feel like that would make more sense then seemingly dying of blunt force trauma before miraculously waking up every single time. It really trivializes Jimmy's lethality and turns him into Slappy The Clown who beats you and then plays hide and seek with you without ever growing tired of it. Like I have no issue suspending disbelief and I'm hardly the type of dude who gets upset over movie plotholes and the like, but for a horror game... that's ridiculous. It'd be like getting killed in Resident Evil 4 by a Chainsaw Ganado and you see a cutscene of Leon just screwing his bloody severed head back on. Just goofy. I also completely detest the level layout, which feels like a figure-eight in terms of understanding where to go. The "Exit" arrow helps once you notice it at the fork in the hallway, but I'd love having a map in your hotel room (or by the stairs) just to glance at and make your way over so your understanding of the map begins to gradually solidify. Most of the time I die it's because I have no earthly idea where I'm going. Even if it could be contextualized as a "fire escape" sort of map like most hotels have in each room I think that would be a huge leg-up without handholding players too much (since I see a few people in the discussion tab groaning about "stop making the game easier" - there are reasonable concessions one could take to make the game less frustrating). As it stands right now with my current playtime I still just click aimlessly until I either reach the elevator or a dead end, and I have zero chance of grasping where any of the identical areas will lead me to, since some lamps, props, and otherwise carpet color differences are the only distinguishing characteristics. This is further exacerbated by the ghost mechanic being "find the ghost, ask some questions" wherein asking too many incorrect questions will make the ghost go away and you have to leave the area and come back (or restart the game and load the autosave, which is faster). I REALLY appreciate what this game tries to do. And it is the single most beautifully-rendered game I've ever played in my entire life, to the extent that I have to ask what sort of blood magic incantation Baggy Cat chanted in order to perfectly superimpose a human hand onto a 3D background, or if the objects in question are even 3D or real filmed videos in the first place. But it's just boring, which is really sad, because it's an extremely interesting concept for a game. But unfortunately it really only makes good LetsPlay material unless you happen to be a hardcore puzzle/supernatural fan and want to play a mind-numbingly obtuse puzzle game that never plays by its own rules. The amount of sheer trial and error makes this game a complete slog to get through, with the story being the only redeemable aspect. The slightest amount of "aha" or relief experienced from finally making progress in the game is completely undermined by the sheer HOURS of slamming your head against the wall just to make the tiniest progress. Just watch John Wolfe play it and save your money.Show moreShow less
Look, as the actor who plays Jimmy (Hi, I'm Huld, my pronouns are she/ her and ve/ver), the antagonist of this game, I probably shouldn't be reviewing it, but I will anyway. Since I first got to play it, Tim's ability to blend real video footage with CG environments and create a seamless environment has never stopped amazing me. I'm in the middle of a playthrough now, and moving through the halls is so fluid and feels so good, and Jimmy - that is ME - still terrifies me! XD If you want a scary game with a story that has real heart at the centre of it, you can't go wrong with this one. The ending might be abrupt, but you can look forward to the sequel, which is currently in pre-production and will step things up a notch!Show moreShow less
I loved Contradiction and the prologue of this looked great, but once I played I was getting really bad motion sickness with the way it moves so couldn't explore or enjoy the game. I hate to give a negative review, I am only doing so to point out this potential issue for others.Show moreShow less
The atmosphere this game creates is fantastic! I recommend buying it wholeheartedly. Like their previous game "contradiction," "At dead of Night" is an immensely entertaining FMV game, though I think it is executed better here. This game was really entertaining up until the ending, where it became aggravatingly annoying and repetitive. It's literally just so frustrating that the game stops being fun or scary, I just keep going through the same motions to do the same thing to get stopped and forced to start over from the beginning of the final stretch. And when you DO complete it, the ending is completely unsatisfying. ~ Spoilers Ahead: You don't even get to see the friends you save, and there is NO resolution to the story itself. Nothing is solved, nothing changes. It feels like there just wasn't a point. Which is really disappointing, because the gameplay up until that last part was fun.Show moreShow less
Pros and cons are down below) Don't forget to drop a like if it was useful! Check out one chapter of the game here (I took the developers request and didn't include the ending in the video to avoid any major spoilers, and likes and subs are highly appreciated and encourages, of course :3): https://youtu.be/c3sDBC_Ixis Advantages: 1. The game looks incredible (I mean, obviously as it is a part-game, part-movie thingy). Still, there are so many nice scripted scenes of enemy jumping from behind the corners and noticing you. Even looking in the spy glass, one can note lots of different animations for the same action of enemy walking by the door. The attention to details is very appealing. 2. The game mechanics are cool. You feel like playing more realistic Phasmophobia - looking for ghosts using Spirit Box. Only ghost vocabulary is much more wide and they are smart to form complete sentences and make sense. I mean, the mechanics feel so intriguing, you want to know more and investigate further - the game is addictive, I can't wait to spare some time to play more! 3. The enemy is super scary! I will not lie when I say that I haven't been so terrified playing the game since Outlast 2. Especially at first, when you have no idea what the heck you should do and how to deal with this person - you are gonna crap your pants several times for sure! 4. Well, I like the actors, I think that is also worth pointing out as an advantage. I think they've done a great job! Disadvantages: 1. It is very hard to figure out how to play. First of all, the game does not make you go through the tutorial. It has some hints, so you think "Ah, that was the tutorial, now I'm an expert ghost hunter, going to haunt their arses until they tell me their secrets". But PROBLEM! It was not the tutorial. You have it in the menu and you can access it at any time but before that you'll die not realising that you had no idea how to play. And, after you find the tutorial, you'll realise it wasn't helpful at all! It's hard to figure out what you need to do and how at first, so further below, I'll list my top 5 tips I wish I knew starting the game. You are welcome) 2. Well, it's hard not to die. So, fellow achievement hunters, you have a problem here. But if you don't suffer with OCD (as I do) and don't think you have to 100% every game - dying will be much less of a problem to you. Still, dying is punishing. Upon dying you lose everything! So, you have to basically go through everything again to get back your mirror, compass, keys, etc. This makes it impossible to boldly run around not caring about staying alive and caring only about progressing. Well, you have to learn to stay alive! 3. The puzzles seem to be much simpler than anticipated. I mean, for me (though I am only ONE chapter into the game!!) they pose no problem, as the solutions are very obvious, I mean, you'll know exactly what I mean as soon as you start playing. The problem is to get to the place of destination intact and without a hole in your scull from a hit with the bat. 4. The outline of the hotel seems so repetitive. On the one hand, that's a disadvantage as it is confusing and boring. On the other hand, it is an advantage (!) as it poses a challenge to navigate through the hallways which seem to be one and the same (at least at first). Top 5 tips I wish I knew starting the game (This comment deserves a like now for sure!!!!): 1. Pressing D to duck the music helps A LOT! Don't underestimate the power of this button - you will probably not be able to hear his footsteps from afar standing at the door, and that might be crucial. 2. Never rush through hallways -he's a camping type of killer but you can ALWAYS see hints that he's there. Don't be afraid to pause and look for hints (and don't be afraid of him sneaking behind you as this giggly sonofabarrel will definitely let you know he sees you). 3. His speed is not constant and he can change directions suddenly. Also, his movement does not depend on your change of location (maybe that was obvious, but I was wondering at first). 4. Sometimes you can know you are in danger looking at the symbol in the bottom right corner. If it's red - you are in danger, you need to do something about that fast! 5. Closets in rooms are not the safest bet but they are necessary in order to lock Jimmy inside the room. But you can try anyway, maybe you'll understand what I meant) Overall: I think this is fascinating! SO scary and challenging! The actors are impressive. I'm having a blast playing the game, though I am covering in fear and covering my face 80% of the time (I play horror games on an everyday basis for years now and still have this reaction)). That's definitely a YES. 8.5/10 star rating! AAaaaand don't forget to drop a generous like if this info was useful to you as thus it might be useful to other people as well)Show moreShow less
Imagine that you're inside of a hotel, and you want to watch a movie. However, every 15 seconds, the movie pauses itself, and you have to take an elevator to another floor of the hotel and wander through a maze in order to watch the next 15 seconds of the movie. While you're doing this, sometimes a guy takes away the remote control that you need in order to make the movie play, and you have to go back to Floor 1 in order to get the remote back. I just described the gameplay of At Dead of Night. It's not a fun way to experience a story. And that's why I cannot recommend this game. I'm impressed with the seamless integration of live-action footage with 3D photorealistic game environments, but gorgeous graphics can't save an unpleasant experience. Would be better with a map, would be much better with a way to fast-forward through the Scrying Mirror scenes, and would be far better with the ability to save.Show moreShow less

I want to enjoy this game. I really do. It has a great aesthetic, wonderful ambiance and soundtrack. Jimmy Hall is terrifying even though he looks so silly (probably because he is a actor recorded). It has a really promising and one of a kind horror. Just being in the hotel is unnerving. This is wonderful. The problem is the gameplay aspect. The game is 100% dependant on you being good at differating sounds and using your ears to listen to the tiniest of sounds while there is loud banging and whistling around you. If you are such a person that can handle such sound differation, then go a head and play this game. But if you are like me and struggle with active sounds (aka, games that require you to be open to sound differences and being able to tell them apart actively, rather than passively / by reflex). Then I cannot recommend this game to you. It will lead to you only feeling frustrated and confused (like me) why you cannot successfully play this game when Jimmy Hall Boop you and reset your progress over and over. Though, there is more why I cannot recommend this game and that has to do with the core goal of the game. You are forced to find clues and keys to progress by speaking to ghosts and figuring out their tragic story. The game actively want you to explore the hotell floors to find all the clues. The game actively is trying to tell you to go to certain areas to talk to ghosts and figure out their story. I do not mind the constant 15 second story progression, then go to the next floor idea. Even if it is tedious. What I mind is the fact that while I have to listen for Jimmy Hall to not Boop me and reset me, I have to actively struggle and spin around hoping the ghost event trigger so that I can enter their room and talk to them. The game DEMANDS that you stand in the open, where Jimmy can get you. Spin around / move around a certain area, just moving back and forth, waiting for the ghost event to happen, just so you can progress the story and talk to them afterwards! Did I mention this is happening in the hallways Jimmy are while he is trying to get you? That is what really bother me and forced me to refund and really write this negative review. I want to love the game, but I felt complete disappointment and dishearted to even continue ( even tried to get back to it to give it another shot) because the game is ACTIVELY pushing you to put yourself at risk of being RESET / attacked by Jimmy only because you are trying to get the GHOST to active their event so you can progress the story. I really wish I could like this game. I really really wish that I could. But the game design flaw in how to progress the story and the fact that Jimmy is sound-based (and I cannot play such games) makes me really unable to like it. It has such a promise, but falls so unfortunately flat in the design flaw.Show moreShow less
