Just finished this. I would absolutely recommend it to fellow gamers. Brief summary points: The Good - Voice acting is the best I've come across in any game. Truly exceptional. Really helps you empathise with the characters - Graphics are superb - the people, the landscape, the buildings - Setting is really well done - Early New England, with colonists trying to hack out an English puritan life in an alien land - Concept is novel - the mixing of fanatical christianity with an everyday acceptance of ghosts, devilry and witchcraft really builds an immersive and unique atmosphere - the story is gripping, and the sidequests can be engaging too The Bad - There's probably not enough variety in the combat, and after a hundred encounters it can get a little samey - The map is big, and the fast travel points are too few and far between. You spend a lot of time running/climbing/ducking under in this game, and it's probably too much time. - The two points above combine to make the game longer than it needs to be. I'm a completionist by nature, but for once I didn't try to complete all the remaining sidequests before finishing the main. I just couldn't bring myself to spend 5 minutes running to a sidequest for the same fight I've had many times before, and then the same 5 minutes in reverse running back. - I don't think they quite got the gear/upgrade mechanism right. There's 8(?) items you can equip, and each can be upgraded 7 or 8 times. But the differences between the pieces are not significant, and some gear specialisms seem very unlikely The Ugly Nothing to report. This was a really good game, with no performance issues, no bugs, no massive frustrations at all. Really professional and slick.Show moreShow less
Banishers is one of those games that I would give a neutral review if I could, It hits is some aspects, and misses in others. Yet, since I have to choose, it is no recommend, because it sure misses a lot more than it hits. This game is yet another game that is just too big for its own good. There is some good in there, but it is just sooo boring and samey for way too long. If it was some 25h shorter, it would be much better. There is just SO - MUCH - PADDING. So many pointless time sinks, so much just running around. Do you like question marks on your mini map that lead to more loot that you know you are not going to use? Good, because you have a lot of that here. Wow you got 10 of these upgrade materials?Awesome, they can go to your 20000 pile because you have already upgraded all you can! Fun! Do you like choosing between 20 different weapons, armors, trinkets that have the exact same attack animations and only change your stats slightly and ultimately don't matter. Good, you will get that here. Side quests begin interesting because they are essentially about solving a haunting. Which sounds like fun, and it is... until you realise that ALL, literally ALL of the side quests are this. And every single haunting follow the exact same pattern. After the first 3, you have seen them all: Step 1: First investigate what is going on. Step 2: discover one of the involved parties is not telling the entire story Step 3: Find out what they are hiding Step 4: Do a Sherlock Holmes where you gather everyone and explain your brilliant reasoning} Step 5: Banish the ghost forcefully or ascend them peacefully. Or murder the person being haunted lol (because? Yes) Even worse, almost every side quest has a cartoonishly evil character. Just text book evil. Making the decision at the end just really a no brainer unless you are trying to play evil. And even then, it is truly just so basic evil. Do you like open world? Well this game attempts to be. And fails miserably at this. there are semi open areas with NOTHING in them until a quests send you to it. So if you explored before the quests sent you there congratulations, you just wasted your time. Do you like those ps4 games that have the "passageways" to "mask" loading screens. Jesus, this game redefines the concept. I have never seen it used to such an extent. I truly believe that out of my 50 hours played, 3 might have gone solely to this. But hey, at least it has a lot of enemy variety. Hahaha just kidding. Have fun fighting the same 9 enemy types over and over and over again. And here is the worst part about the open world concept. The icing on the cake, the crowning jewel, le pièce de résistance. You can only fast travel between campfires, and there aren't many of those around. If you were sent to the middle of nowhere, you will have to walk your way back. Every. Single. Time. So you better like running around the same places over, and over, and over again, because you will. It is egregiously bad. And to top it all off, (Yes there is more), You cant run from combat encounters! You have to stop, kill everything, and continue. Unbelievable. The worst exploration in a game that I have seen. I Just cannot understand this reasoning except an intentional attempt in padding for time done in bad faith. It is just so amateur hour. Of these 50 hours some 30 were spent just running around. Maybe that is the worst part, the game just seems to be trying really really hard to waste your time at every oportunity. It is exhausting. Combat is meh. It is passable. Not great by any means, but ok. Melee is the usual assassins creed style boringness but it servers its purpose. The musket is fun to shoot, so I sure was trying to just use the musket as much as possible. If the enemy variety was better maybe the combat would be more fun, but it isnt, so, oh well. That being said, do yourself a favour and choose normal difficulty or even easy. This game uses stat bloat for harder difficulties. And scaling, Heh, it really does seems the devs took the absolutely most lazy options for a lot of the features. Another reason the game should have been 20h long instead of 50. Even in normal I was thinking of just changing to the easiest because I just couldn't take it anymore. The story of the game is also passable. The main story is painfully predictable. Most side quests are, as I mentioned previously, very predictable as well. That being said, they are well written. You can see effort was put into it. I just wished they had shifted the time spent developing the time sinks to actually improving these side quests even more. You can really spot some shards of brilliance in some of them. 2 in particular are very good. The characters are a mixed bag. It really does feel like most of them were created just to shoehorn the narrative and serve no other purpose. Some are comically evil or good like I said before. The only likeable character is Red, the playable character. Antea, is just so plain. She is the type of character that the writers just tried way, way to hard. She reminds me a lot of Deacon st John from Days Gone. They are both just.... an ass. They both spend the entire game making pessimistic, dismissive comments all throughout the game. At least Red is fun. You will see a lot of reviews saying that the game tries to push a narrative. I disagree with this, but I can really see where they are coming from, The devs just took such a lazy approach to write parts of the story. For instance, Antea is often quick to point out how everyone are just super evil, bigots and racists. And yet, there is not a single moment where any of the characters are racist towards her. In the 1700s... Wut? From the time period, I would assume yes, most people would indeed be racist and bigots, but the game only seems to remember this when it is convenient for the narrative. It is this type of lazy writing that makes the story feel shallow. I couldn't care less for anyone involved by the end. And the only time I really wanted an outcome, to forcefully banish the ghost of the last boss just so I could shove it in Antea's face, the game didn't let me. SMH. But otherwise, it servers its purpose. To end on a better note, boss battles are actually quite fun. I enjoyed them. But there aren't many around. The best part about the game is the production quality, the voice actors did an exceptional job. Truly outstanding. Art direction was great as well. The setting is quite unique, the chosen time period was a refreshing to see between the plethora of modern and middle age based games. Sound direction was good, and dialogue was decent. To be honest, I dont know why I finished it, because by the end, I was truly done with the game trying to waste my time. If I could have these 50 h back, I would.Show moreShow less
Starfield, BG3, mass effect remaster, hogwarts, TLOU, the last year I've spent hundreds on games, looking for something, anything to suck me in, give me thst spark like games use to. I accepted months ago it wasn't the games, it was me. I'm to old, I don't care anymore. They don't draw me in and fulfill me like they use to. Than I saw this game, I immediately knew I was interested, but I had been interested in all the previous games I listed. I brushed it off, but kept thinking about it. Finally today I took the dive, and my God, im back baby. This game fisted my soul, and I love every second of it. I can't wait to find out what happens next. I can't believe they'd give me the choice between life and death in this way. The combat is fine, its your normal God of War combat, it's not floaty, it's not disconnected. It feels good. Parry. Dodge, it feels good. But the story, my God the story. Im not one for ghosts and haunts and stuff. But this is amazing. This is done in such a way I am just waiting with bated breath for the next reveal, the next twist. I recommend it, so much. Watch indeamaus teaser of it. If you think it looks like something your into, take the plunge.Show moreShow less
With Banishers, developer Don't Nod leaves behind their narrative-heavy approach to Role-Playing for a generic, Wish-I-Was-God-Of-War one. The technology powering the game is solid and great care was taken in order to showcase the upgrade in fidelity. Sadly, the environments you will be traversing are cookie-cutter standards, including the mundatory Dark Woods, the spooky Bog and the in-between scenic routes. Antea and Red are an interesting couple, whose story is lost (literally) in transition, as you'll end up leaving their woes behind in favor of picking up Crafting Material No. 145. A functional product straight out of the conveyor belt, it will scratch the septic itch of people who "enjoy" UbiSoft's established repetition. If you've come here hoping for the next Vampyr, this is not the game you hoped to find. In-Depth Review - FiOthShow moreShow less
About 11 hours in and it's just starting to open up, game is huge with everything I want, great story that keeps unfolding. Combat that is fun, powerful and effective with being able to switch to your partner in a flash. Exploration is rewarded and resources plentiful. Make the game as easy or hard as you want. Choices matter, of which you will have many, you will have your moral ground tasted, beware. This title isn't triple A it's better, please support devs that create single player games worth playing. I hope this title gets the attention it deserves, because my friends it's a good one. Well to the few critics I am 75 hours in and still love it, even more. Just finished at 85 hours one of the best story based games I have ever played. Thank you Don't nod I know this game won't sell as many copies as you want, but respect for making such a great game and all your hard work is much appreciated.Show moreShow less
The story is long and repetitive, with weak action elements and few types of enemies. If you like playing games, it's not recommended, but if you like listening to stories, you can buy it.Show moreShow less
EDIT 2: I finished the game, and just...wow, this game is absolute brillant, fantastic, i was in tears by the end of it, easily one of my all time favourites now. EDIT 1: I had very few hours in the original review, now, with a lot more, i'd say that this is a must buy, if you liked Vampyr or GoW 2018, this is for you, a AA game that punches WAAAY above it's weight class, the writing on this game is absolutely fantastic, the side quest are all amazing, combat, exploration, the tone, the acting, the graphics, the art direction everything is really good and you should buy it, even at full price, bc it's awesome. It's so rare to have an unreal engine game that does not stutter like crazy, does not melt your rig, does not take an eternity to compile shaders, does not crash, and, against all odds, is well optimized, so performance is solid, also, the game is good, it's a AA game so go with that in mind, but combat is solid, perfomances, story and world are REALLY good, progressions is satisfying, overall is a really, really good game from these starting hours, very God of War 2018 like. Gonna update after beating the game, but for now, absolutely worth the buy.Show moreShow less
I want so badly to like this game, but for something toted as being all about "Difficult choices", it's maddening to have one choice shoved down your throat consistently throughout the game. In order to get the "good" endings, you must make the same exact choice every time for the entirety of the game, which takes every bit of the enjoyment of a role-playing game out of the game. The game even goes so far as to restrict your movement in places with invisible walls just in the middle of the road to block your progress. It feels very constrained. The combat is bland and flavorless. Punch things or stab things. Occasionally shoot things. Easy, cut and dried, with very little variance, and the same mobs springing up every couple of minutes. And the worst bit is the script / writing. The story has so much promise - it's INTERESTING - and it's just gutted by having the same tired conversations over and over again (Red and Antea are flat as characters; twenty hours in and it feels like all they ever talk about is their commitment to each other, which is nice, but we don't need constant dialogue about it to remind us its' there). Some of the dialogue with the NPCs is so obtuse you don't know what your actual goal is until it pops up on your map. And there are points where the game just jumps from talking to someone to "and now we're in the next spot to start the next quest". There are even moments where the soundtrack cuts out abruptly to silence because you've passed a marker where it should transition to the next track. It feels lazy. It feels hastily made and not well composed. Partly unfinished, and partly "we did just enough that we shouldn't have to deliver anything more".Show moreShow less
The first game I bought this year from 2024. Why? - Well writen characters and story. - Dynamic and technical combat. - Multiple choices to replay the game. - Fantastic atmosphere and locations. - Great price tag. - Without Microtransactions. - Without Denuvo.Show moreShow less
I really wanted to like this game. But the gameplay pacing is just horrible. The main plot is somewhat OK, the Hauntings are actually very cool and interesting but thats about it. Too much combat at the points in the game where there's too little combat mechanics to enjoy. A good chunk of my playtime was spent with mindless combat with very very VERY basic "combos" with perfect switches and thats it. The amount of combat that I have to go through with that system is not acceptable. The game is also structured very weirdly that it wants to be an open-world metroidvania-ish kind of lock and key. But metroidvania doesn't WASTE your time with hidden loading screens via tight crevices and unavoidable boring combat. You can backtrack in metroidvania because doing so is fast and easy and only requires you to remember where you should go back to. Then there's exploration where you can't interact with the thing because you haven't unlocked the quest for it (cursed chests) forcing you to once again BACKTRACK to them going through all the slow climbing animations and boring fights to get to them. Basically, the traversal and combat really brought the whole thing down for me that I did not finish the game. Combat takes too long to get going and the game also forces quite a lot of combat during the time when combat is still boring. Traversal is filled with slow shimmy, tight crevices, slow climbing animations, etc. I know that that's like only 2 things but those 2 things are what you're going to be doing most of the time, travelling to and from quest markers and map markers while getting unavoidable combat encounters. It would've been fine if: - traversal was interesting or fast - combat has a higher skill ceiling or more mechanics to play around with - combat was avoidable - there were less backtracking - this was a more linear experience - a better paced experienceShow moreShow less
