I've played 90 hours of this game, and much of that I've enjoyed, so I sort of have to give it a thumbs up overall. But my time with it has ended in frustration -- I just can't do it any more and have to quit before I can see the end. The longer you play, the more glaring the huge list of terrible design decisions and technical issues start to pile up, until you just can't ignore them any more. There's still a lot of fun to be had, but anyone going in should know about the problems that run really, really deep throughout the game. 1. The campaign is an absolute slog. It's a 30 hour game stretched out for potentially 100+ hours. Yes, you can sort of tackle objectives at your own pace and you can skip side objectives if you want. I've heard of people finishing it much quicker, but it's very easy to get into a situation where you're fighting defensively and making any sort of main quest progress becomes incredibly slow and drawn out while you fight 3-4 defensive battles at the end of every turn. In an utterly bizarre design choice that hugely multiplies this problem, your faction leader must be present for *any* battle that ties to a key mission objective. That means that you can only tackle one objective at a time, and objectives might be scattered on opposite sides of the world map. It make take five turns to move your leader to the next objective. Each of those turns might bring another 3-4 defensive battles. So potentially 20 cookie-cutter battles of no consequence just while you wait for your fleets to be in the right position to move the story forward. 2. There is no way to save the game between end-of-turn defensive battles. That means, on clicking 'end turn' you might be locked in for anywhere between twenty minutes to an hour and a half. If something comes up and you want to stop playing? Tough. It means that, before clicking end turn you have to scour the map to figure out how many defensive battles to expect and then do the maths to figure out if you have enough spare time to actually see it through. When you might have four battles against 3,000 point enemy fleets, those battles can easily stretch to half an hour because you'll be playing in slow-mo and very carefully choreographing your own ships. It's just an abysmal decision in terms of quality of life. 3. AI is bad across the board. The optimal strategy for every single battle is to find a nice big gas cloud, set your ships up in it and wait for the enemy to run at you while you slaughter them at range with your broadsides. The AI will be very happy to oblige and will do nothing to counter the strategy. 4. The terrible AI makes fighting against Tyranids soul destroying. They are completely uninteresting and a real slog to fight against. They just run at you. If they get close they'll probably one-shot your smaller ships with their boarding actions. You will be fighting against Tyranids a hell of a lot so the fact that they are not interesting to engage with at all is a big problem. 5. Like the AI, many of the game's systems are utterly half-baked. After the first 10 turns, you'll probably never have to worry about the economy again because you'll have more money that you can ever spend. Map features like defence platforms and space stations are meaningless because the enemy AI will not use them to its advantage -- you can just stay away from them until you've defeated the enemy fleet and then go and kill them from out of range afterwards. Map features like solar storms, plasma storms, radiation storms, whatever else, do nothing to make battles different or interesting and are mostly just an inconvenient irritation. Because the bad AI doesn't know how to deal with them, they're more of a threat to the enemy than the player. 6. Parts of the UI are horribly thought out. E.g. in the screen where you choose which ships to deploy to a given battle, you cannot see the individual ship loadouts. So, say you want to make sure you have a good balance of aircraft carriers and heavy gunships, unless you know by heart which ship types carry which weapons, you can't tell from this screen. Likewise, the gimmicky battle modifiers (solar storms, radiation storms, etc.) appear but there is no prompt to remind you what they do. So you'd better remember whether a solar storm means you should stay in the gas clouds or avoid them, because the game will give you no info. 7. The game runs really badly, even on a very modern gaming PC. When I click to open the menu to build new ships, the game hangs for anywhere between 5 and 10 seconds before showing the screen. Pressing the alt button to show the gas clouds and other map features causes the game to hang for a couple of seconds. Alt-tabbing out of the game has a significant chance of crashing the game. Just about everything you do seems to make it hang. 8. Unit pathfinding is regularly bad. Ships can get stuck on each other and refuse to move until you manually micromanage them away from each other. Occasionally they glitch out on each other in a way that makes them blow up. 9. Basic features you'd expect from a modern RTS are missing. There are no formation options for your units. As far as I've found there is no shortcut for selecting units of a specific type. It makes the iniital set-up of each battle annoying. You never need to adapt your starting approach depending on the scenario, so it's literally just doing the same thing every single time. After all that ranting, it seems bizarre that this is a positive review. This game got in my head in a way that I find myself thinking about it constantly while not playing it. That's a testament to how satisfying the very core of the ship combat is when it works. But my god it's buried in a package that makes so, so many idiotic missteps that I can't persevere with it any longer.Show moreShow less

I really, really wanted to love this game, but the devs and publishers alike have lied to us so many times and worked so hard to destroy what little community the game had that I just can't justify another. The basic gameplay loop is great - you have huge, beautiful cathedrals in space beating each other to death with big guns and bigger lasers, with a HEAVY focus on micro rather than macro. While a lot of the weapons feel like popguns rather than anti-ship artillery, the battles look incredible IF you have a great rig (still pretty good with a mediocre rig, though) and there's a bunch of ships and strategies to pick from. The core issue with the game is that everything around that loop is garbage. The AI is a complete joke, almost insultingly so. If there are capture points, they will COMPLETELY ignoring you to capture them - even as you shoot at them. Without capture points? They just bumrush your admiral. Sometimes they get so confused they almost do something right by accident, but in general it's incredibly easy to abuse the atrocious AI without even trying. Faction balance has never been great but they pushed the competitive multiplayer mode to the exclusion of everything else until it crashed and burned completely, and multiplayer was always an unbalanced mess, as much because of as despite the devs attempts to fix it; each set of nerfs and buffs just made a different faction brokenly overpowered. Add in the publisher's HILARIOUSLY terrible handling of the discord (mass bans by amateur mods with obvious biases) to help destroy the community, and by now the multiplayer is just dead, especially 2v2 is essentially gone forever. What about the singleplayer? Well, at least it worked, mostly, but the campaign map is almost comically boring and underwhelming - a VERY poor ripoff of the Civilization 5 or more relevantly Total War: Warhammer 2 campaign map, but without any of the interesting choices, clunky as hell, and oftentimes buggy as hell. And you instantly lose the campaign if Admiral Spire dies, who you have to have in every battle, and the AI focuses down almost exclusively. Many basic functions like swapping ships between fleets or being able to put your admiral in a better ship were completely absent or nearly/totally broken for a long time - and surprise, some are still broken! Dropping a ship from your fleet has a small chance to nuke the entire fleet completely, even if it's Admiral Spire's fleet, and if it happens - well, you aint getting that admiral back. And yes, it can happen to Spire too. And let's not even start how grindy, uninteresting, and repetitive the campaign battles get - having to fight 20 million battles constantly because autoresolve is such garbage would be fine if most of them weren't just slow, bloated messes that take forever and aren't HARD or interesting, just slow grinds of seemingly endless enemy reinforcements. There are a few missions that are more unique, but even most of those are either massively overtuned or just massive HP sponges or both, with plenty of oneshots and no way to get through endless HP pools in a reasonable timeframe. But there's coop campaigns, right? Sort of! They were promised as a launch deal, then about a week before launch they mentioned they were kinda buggy but would be fixed a few months later in March. Well - they were a lot worse than a little buggy. They crashed or guest got kicked after EVERY battle. March comes and goes, on the last day of march they release fixed coop! Except it still had all the same crash/kick bugs. So still not playable. Keep on going through the months and somewhere around July or August they at least fixed the crash/kick bugs... mostly... except not really, it's just a bit less common now, you still can only go a few turns before something happens. In the end, if you're SOLELY looking at this for vs AI skirmishes, it's an alright game, at least on sale. If you want it for the campaign - get Total War Warhammer 2 instead. If you want it for the coop campaign - same deal, TWW2 is just infinitely better. If you want it for the multiplayer... don't. From what I hear, Gothic Armada 1 followed a similar trajectory of lies and lack of delivery so it's probably a wise call to avoid the devs entirely in the future.Show moreShow less

This is a great game - with mods it becomes an amazing game (First up - there IS a simple fix that works for most people that get crashes and can't start the game due to the Unreal Engine error that affects 11'th+ gen intel users. I'll post it at the bottom of the review.) Battle Fleet Gothic Armada II is a game I love. So much so that I have spent over 1 100 hours playing (and modding) it. It has everything a space combat game should have in the shape of big ships, even bigger explosions and all based on the old Table Top game Battle Fleet Gothic. It builds on the previous game in the series and adds a lot of functions and variation, not the least through the fact that it has most of the factions in 40k represented in one way or the other. It has some flaws, but I consider these minor - and some are fixed through mods. Seeing your massive ships fire broadsides into the enemy or ramming them into scrap is something I never seem to tire of. For me, this is honestly one of the best 40K RTS games out there. But its not perfect so lets start with the flaws: The Bad MP scene is pretty dead. For those that enjoy pvp your best chances are to play either during prime time depending on time zone or setting up games through the games related discords. Unlike the first game, you do not have the option to customize individual ships in a fleet. Unmodded the game is sadly very small scale - a fleet consists of one or two battleships and a few smaller ones. The AI is poor, which means its generally not much of a challenge at a unmodded game level. The resource management, empire building, and non-battle related functions are poor or non-existent. No grand empires, diplomacy etc. Then again, it is 40K - and the only good Xenos is a dead one. With the negative out of the way, lets look at the good instead: The Good Graphics are excellent. Effects, backgrounds, the ships themselves, its better than most RTS games in the genre to be honest. Sound is immersive, music good but can get a bit repetitive if you play it long enough. Weapon sounds and explosions, ramming and effects sound impressive. Gameplay is fun. It mainly features Battle Mode which is just a "pick your fleet - fight the AI" kind of deal and the Campaign, which is where I have spent the most time. You can play as the Imperials (Space Marines, Imperial Navy and Mechanicus fleets) , Chaos, Necron and Tyranid in the campaign, each campaign being from a different viewpoint of the events during the war for the sector. All factions are represented in the campaign except Tau, but you cannot play as any of them except the four main factions in the unmodded game. Faction variation is great, as you can play 12 factions: in the Battle mode: Imperial Navy, Space Marines, Admech, Chaos, Aeldari Craftworlders, Aeldari Corsairs, Drukhari, Orks, Tyranids, Necrons, and even two Tau factions. Coop in the campaign is neat. The Skalgrim Mod As you have noticed I write "unmodded" more than one time in the review and that's because I am the modder behind the largest mod for the game, the Skalgrim mod, which most people seem to like. What this mod does in short is turning the base game up to eleven. The mod expands greatly on the base game, rebalance it and adds a massive amount of ships. It changes the game to make it bigger. Fleets are bigger, battles are bigger, and the players ability to customize the experience is far greater while factions function closer to their respective lore. The Dark Mechanicum as a playable Chaos campaign subfaction (as per 2.2 version). Tau added in the campaigns as a enemy force 150+ new ships greatly expands on ship rosters (SM and Necrons had like 9 ships each unmodded...) Playable Titans and Mega Titans (like the Gloriana class titans or The Phalanx, Craftworlds, the Emperors flagship, the Imperator Somnium and so on.) Greater customization options like insanely massive fleets in the custom campaign mode with hundreds of ships. Playable in Coop (info about this can be found in the readme or discord) Has submods that further lets you tweak gameplay like HP/Weapon/Buildpoints increase/decrease. Campaign submods lets you play as otherwise unplayable factions. (Orks, Aeldari, Tau and so on) To download or read more about the mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/skalgrim-mod https://www.nexusmods.com/battlefleetgothicarmada2/mods/6?tab=description Mod discord: https://discord.gg/8YaYtCb The Unreal Error Fix As promised this fixes the UE error for most people: Step 1. Open "Control Panel" by searching for it in Windows search bar, by pressing the Windows button or key. Step 2. Go to "System & Security" Step 3. Go to "System" and Press "Advanced system settings" Step 4. Press "Environmental Variables" Step 5. Create a new "System Variable" (NOT USER VARIABLE) Step 6. Enter the following into the Variable name box: OPENSSL_ia32cap Step 7. Enter the following into the Variable value box: ~0x20000000 Step 8. Now press OK. Step 9. Restart Or if you only want it to affect this game and not change your registry: Step 1. Open Steam and go to your library. Step 2. Right click on the game in your library and click on properties. Step 3. Under General -> Launch Options copy & paste this line: cmd /c "set OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 && %command%" Step 4. Start the game. Note: If you are using e.g. the Skalgrim mod the -NoEAC flag needs to be placed after the command. So, it has to look like this: cmd /c "set OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 && %command%" -NoEAC I hope this review has been helpful. Im currently working on a update for the Skalgrim Mod, the 2.2.5 version. You can read more about that or just join the discussions in my discord as linked above. Other than this, I say get the game. Its well worth it, especially during a sale. And that includes the Chaos DLC. Also, I recommend my mod. But Im biased. I would not have spent so much time on it and over 100 000 people would not have downloaded it if it wasn't good I think. ;) Good Luck Admirals! For the Emperor!Show moreShow less

I really wanted to recommend this game. I love 40K, and the effort put into the ships and gameplay of this game are phenomenal, and it really shows how much the development team put into this game to keep it both fun (For the Most Part) and Authentic. That being said, I cannot give my blessing to this game. It suffers from a great many issues that honestly plagued it's predecessor, Battlefleet Gothic Armada. 1. Replayability was something BGA1 at least had, with its great skirmish mode and progressions for that mode. While I cannot recommend the campaign for BGA1, I would love to recommend the first in this series for its stellar Skirmish Mode. BGA2 doesn't really have a skirmish mode, per se, but a "Battle" mode. It features none of the progression and customization from its predecesor, and is really just a farcical sideshow intended to lure in the possibility of making BGA2 a Tournament type game while shafting the standard players. Cannot recommend you stay away from this mode like its a Tyrannid wielding Storm Bolters. 2. The Campaign. THE CAMPAIGN. By goodness the Campaign is actually somewhat nice. The gameplay and semi-4x strategy components make it very fun. However... replayability is not really there. You cannot randomize the start, do custom campaigns, or even choose half the factions for the Campaign! Thats right, in a game that Prided itself on having twice the factions as BGA1, You can play a grand total of 3 for the Campaign (Technically 5 since the Toaster Lovers and the Bolter Addicts are "playable" in the Imperial Campaign, But I don't count them because even if you play with exclusively either fleets, its the same campaign), Including the aforementioned Imperium, the Necrons (woop-de-doo), and the TYRANIDS. Hell, you cannot even play the main antagonists of the game, the Chaos forces, without shelling out 12.99 US for the DLC for their Campaign! This leads me neatly into my last two topics... 3. Co-op. Its a feature... that is still pretty much in Early access nearly two years after launch. When it even works (which it tends not to), the Co-op Battle mode is just as bad as the regular battle mode, and the co-op campaign is essentially player 2 waiting patiently for Player 1 to do all the 4x stuff (because hes has NO CONTROL over anything), and only being a factor in the battles, where he controls half your fleet, and not his own seperate fleet, and can also move your ships because WHY NOT. This leads well into my final, most damning point... 4. The game has suffered the fate of its predecesor... which essentially means its been abandoned. After promising Multiple post launch DLC drops for the game, to include new campaigns, ships, and modes (Even going so far as to draw up a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ roadmap), there has been exactly one DLC. That is the Chaos Campaign DLC, which only features a barebones Chaos storyline and no really new content. This DLC came out, as of the time of writing, one YEAR ago. Devs have said there will be no new updates for the game, and so its essentially been abandoned. This isnt really a shock for most people, as this EXACT SAME THING happened years ago with BGA1, but stings nonetheless. TL;DR... Dont buy this game. Its really lackluster, borderline false advertising, and an abandoned project. If I were you, I'd stay away from anything these Devs push out in the future until they've wisened up. Cheers. Edit: Thanks for reading this! Also its been pointed out that this game is not quite 2 years old (around 18ish months) at the original time of writing.Show moreShow less

Please follow United Critics for quality reviews Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 Review In a massive storm of energy, a vast spaceship emerges from an alternate universe that vessels are used to travel in Battlefield Gothic. It is a Real-time Strategy (RTS) video game about massive ships fighting against each other in the Warhammer 4K Universe. The deadly battles are set on a 2D plane filled with capture points and asteroid planes. In the game, you can handle the ship like cruise liners, while each vessel offers you a beautiful dashboard equipped with unique abilities. During the game, the massive battleships and huge cruisers will reveal fighters and squadrons, boarding actions, as well as torpedo barrages. Set in a Science-fiction Universe Battlefleet Gothic 2: Armada 2 comes with a blend of Strategy and Real-time Tactics game elements, taking place in the massive sci-fi space environment where you can move from a third-person viewpoint and can control the enormous spaceship to take on others, who are planning to take over your world. The beautiful setting, highly detailed graphics, and outstanding soundtracks will make you addicted to it and would be proved a time killer. So before starting the game, you should polish your strategic skills, it is the key to success. Both Single-player and Multiplayer game options are there, and you can compete against other players in an Online PvP (Player versus Player) mode with only the aim of being the last standing spaceship with your allies to win. 12 Powerful Factions It serves as a sequel to the first release, expanding the universe and introducing the full-blown title, which is more affluent, more significant and impresses as compared to the last title. It brings you all 12 playable factions from the original tabletop game and its DLCs, including: • Space Marines • Imperial Navy • Aeldari Craftworld • Drukhari • Chaos • The Tyranids • Protector Fleets Dramatic Storyline The game features an exciting storyline set in the Warhammer 4K Universe, serving as the canvas for three different dynamic campaigns with grand narratives, such as the Necrons, the Tyranids, and the Imperium. During the game, your objective is to navigate the system in the said environment to fight against opposing forces controlled by Gulliman and Belisarius Cawl. This time, the developer introduced large-scale battles with improved multiplayer modes, revised gameplay, and prominent features for a balanced online experience. It seems several modifications are made as the developer presents a set of improvements across the board and release an extensive customization system for spaceships and fleets. Mechanics of the Map There are three different campaigns available, and each one is offering a set of sectors. With the jump lanes, each sector is connected to systems, comprising one or more planets full of resources and valuable. At the start, you have to complete each sector by accomplishing the given segment. During the gameplay, you can harvest resources and use them to unlock additional content to advance through the story. Lots of challenging missions are there and each one requires the completion of objectives to advance the story. The Verdicts Three dynamic solo campaigns guaranteed different gameplay whenever you come to play with a variety of challenges that need to complete to advance. Revised graphics and improved mechanics take the game to the next level from where the player can’t stop himself from navigating the massive space environment full of stars, planets, and galaxies. Great game. Enjoyable campaign, surprisingly good writing and excellent combat. The 4x layer is a bit thin, but the spectacle of combat more than makes up for that. There's just one big issue: Easy AntiCheat will ruin your fun sooner or later. For me, it was when I booted up one day with a campaign almost 100 turns in and just got locked out. Rebooted, still locked out. Tried command line arguments and everything else I could find online, still locked out of the damn game. All because someone thought it'd be a good idea to include Epic's terrible piece of hypersensitive spyware by default without even an option to disable it. It eventually resumed working the next day, but I remain deeply unhappy at being arbitrarily locked out of the game for so long - especially since it's far from unlikely that it'll happen again. I don't even want to play multiplayer - I just want to have fun beating the enemies of the Emperor in the campaign so why do I have to wrangle a horribly designed anti-cheat app that's practically designed to hurt consumers? Oh, and you can forget about getting support for it. Steam redirects you to the developers, Tindalos... who do not have any kind of customer service whatsoever.Show moreShow less

I'd like to be clear that this is a mixed review and I wish Steam had a mixed response button. The tactical ship to ship action is great and in a lot of ways better than the last game, ships are tougher, loadouts like torpedoes are effective but limited in uses and lighter ships like escorts are actually useful. I do wish they'd inlcuded more mission types but overall it's a big thumbs up. The strategic map is disappointing and it's disappointing mainly because it appears to have so much potential. The first game was a series of missions with filler coming from attacks on your territory; this second game gives you a whole map to move around in, ship yards to occupy, defences to build and somehow feels exactly the same. To give some examples: Occupation is always a simple matter of moving your fleets into the system and killing whatever is there. The AI can't do this and announces its rare intentions to attack your territory a turn beforehand so all your fleets can intercept them. Defences can be instantly built delaying the AI attack and making building any defences before an attack is coming pointless. The AI can't delay your attacks with defences but can limit your fleet size to two instead of three fleets, seeing as there's a limit on how much you can deploy at once that makes virtually no difference. There's no way to delete an unwanted fleet and it will still cost upkeep. Because of fleet limits it's impossible for Necron fleets to recruit cruisers when they initially get access to cruisers. All this makes it feel like you're playing Windows Chess on beginner mode. What could be a meaty important part of the game is reduced to a series of, admittedly, fun tactical battles but they aren't enough to make the game feel solid on its own. The game is beautiful and sounds great, the tearing metal of hull against hull and the flash of void shields being hit with macro weapons are enjoyable on their own. I hope this review is helpful. I'm certainly still going to play the game now and then and I'd hope some of these issues are solved in patches and expansions.Show moreShow less

Starts out absolutely fantastic! But then you get to the part with the Tyranids and you are just kiting them for 30-45 minutes (Average battle time is usually around 7-15 minutes with other factions) because that is the only viable strategy as their ships can basically kill the crews of all your ships with their super duper ultra boarding actions, plus their giant big boi ships have shields, decent ranged damage, stupid high regenerating health and a bunch of fighters.. So if you are a fan of dragged out boring battles where you kite an enemy for half an hour, slowly killing their ships one by one, hoping to dear god you don't accidentally let one of your ships go close enough for them to lick it and then insta-kill the crew, then this is definitely the game for you. However, if the corona virus isn't giving you a large chunk of time off from work then this game is not a good investment, and I don't think I could recommend it to the common player. Update: I played the game again a different day after being calm. I can confirm my rant is still completely correct.Show moreShow less
