"I'm tellin' ya, if I see one bad review on this game - I'm outta here!" - Wally FranksShow moreShow less
I don't normally write reviews, mainly because it seems like I'm parroting what other people have to negatively say about any given thing. That being said, I think I'm getting this in early enough to share my opinion without it being too repetitive. I've only played through it once so far so it may benefit from a second run, but here are my current feelings. Pros: -Gameplay is a step up from the first game. Showing its Bioshock influence, its much more action oriented, with stealth being an option for those who seek it. There's random crafting materials, letters and audio logs scattered throughout the maps, which encourages exploration in a much better way than just backtracking. -The art direction, like the first game, is really cool. While its supposed to resemble an old sepia tone cartoon, the use of dirty yellows with black outlines really sells how grimey and old the world is meant to be. -The whole game looks and feels a lot more polished. Given all the drama that the team had to deal with, it turned out better than I expected. Cons: -The combat kind of sucks. It really just amounts to swinging around your wrench and even if you get killed, you pop out of an inkwell with half your health and can continue to beat on them. Stealth is barely an option toward the end of the game when enemies start spawning in droves. -The main weapon itself is pretty bland, too. A multipurpose pipe fits the setting and is a cool idea on paper, but its your only means of defense for the whole game and the upgrades for it don't really make it feel better than its base form. -The abilities are a wasted feature. Stealth is only viable in the first half of the game, and the Flow ability is very circumstantial and so gimped that it can't really be used in combat. I was hoping for more Bioshocky powers like blasts or traps or something given how much focus that they give Audrey's inky hand and the marks on it. -The enemies are disappointing, consisting mostly of the humanoid Lost Ones. Occasionally you'll come across one of the more iconic enemies like the Butcher Gang, but they end up becoming more of a nuisance than a true threat. With how the Lost Ones act, they feel more like a nuisance too. -A lot of enemies only show up once in the game and never again too. -The Ink Demon itself feels like the biggest letdown. Like the first game, he can pop out randomly while doing tasks, but instead of being a slow moving monster that will book it to you on sight, hes now an audio cue to hide somewhere, followed by another to signal that the coast is clear. He got a redesign for this game, which in my opinion, is really good, so it sucks that they relegate it to cutscenes and a few scripted encounters. -The backtracking is annoying too, even after you get fast travel. Instead of letting you travel to any of the marked inkwells, they're linked to one another and only let you travel between those two, and they're not marked so it just makes it easier to get lost. The whole game reeks of missed potential, and considering what supposedly went on behind the scenes, its likely they had to make do with what they had. The result is a very meh game that's one step forward and two steps back from the original. That being said, I do hope that they continue the series because it at least managed to suck me into the world enough to not want to see it go away forever. If they do make a Bendy 3, or even just a game in the same world, they need to build off of what they improved and and learned. Some recommendations, since I feel like they'd be reading at least a handful of these, are as follows: -Keep the action oriented gameplay! It's not the most engaging, but it can be made better with more enemy variety. -Enemies! The Butcher Gang and Searchers got a glow up from the first game, so it would be nice to encounter them more. Carly and the weird mouth spider things feel really wasted when they could've been used as enemies throughout the game. -Abilities! Flow could've been used for so much outside of movement, it feels like they didn't have the time to implement the features they wanted. Offensive abilities could have been added too to complement the close combat. -Weapons! Why can't we have guns? Or an axe that does more damage but moves slower? There's so many things that this game could have done to make the combat more exciting that its frustrating that we only have a pipe. Honestly, I'm fully expecting this to get ratio'd, but I just wanted to gush about the game. My shortest answer, its fine, marginally better than its predecessor but could have been way better. Fans will probably enjoy it, but as its own thing it isn't engaging enough outside its art style to be worth the money. Here's to hoping they continue to learn from their mistakes.Show moreShow less

Pros : - For an indie/low budget game, it's beautiful. Really a step up in this department from the first one. - The creepy atmosphere of the first one is still there. - The idea of a Jekyll/Hyde with a cutesy Bendy/Ink Demon isn't super original, but feels right and is executed okay. - Nods to the previous game are nice to see. Cons : - Mad over reliance on cheap jumpscares instead of ambiance. The new member of the butcher gang is immensly frustrating in this aspect : random appearance with loud noises, you can't defend, you can't kill her, she just lowers your health and then she vanishes. Do that over and over again. What's the point ? - The protagonist makes awful decisions. She did not have a lot of development in the first chapters, and fine, Henry didn't really have a tremendous character arc in BATIM. But the decisions she made in the last chapters ? One of the rare times I audibly said "Really ? You're gonna do that/trust this guy ?". Frustrating and detached me from the story. - Too much focus on fight ... with extremely limited fighting system. First one was fine with that, mob fights were rare, boss fights were mostly puzzles, so the barebones gameplay wasn't the highlight but it was servicable. Here ? You have regular encounters, sometimes with massive hordes, and some boss fights... and you are expected to fight with no way to dodge, block or kite. Worse, the ennemies respawn infinitely and you respawn yourself if you're killed in a fight, so really, what's the point ? I think you're supposed to sneak and one tap ennemies from behind, but detection from monsters feels really random and they walk faster than you sneak, so ... not enjoyable either. - Puzzle elements and collectible parts felt like a chore. You pick up massive amounts of money and collectibles (cards, gears, parts ...) who really didn't feel rewarding to find. You can power up your stats and weapon, but again, you respawn with 0 downsides when you're killed (except by the Ink Demon) so why should I seek additional power if I have 0 urge for it ? - Some game mechanics feels really underpolished, like the previously mentionned sneak and oneshot kill power. The teleporting power also felt really clunky to use. I sometimes had the right idea, and gave up because I kept getting stuck in an invisible obstacle or a 30 centimeters wall ; when I finally looked it up, turns out you have to angle your power from an extremely specific point or it simply doesn't allow you to progress. Kinda embarassing. - The Ink Demon felt overused and unfortunately less menacing than in the first game. You simply see him too much and the death animations feels cartoonishly overdone, which is fine if you're going for dark comedy but this is not the vibe I got at all. The fact that an 80% opened crate or kneeling in a hole in a wall completely dissipates his menace feels really anticlimactic aswell. The stations weren't a perfect system in the first one but their presence felt at the same time reassuring and menacing since you were wondering if you'd have to use them soon. Here, since you can hide basically anywhere, the menace feels less strong. - Related to that, the game really feels crowded compared to the first one, which played on the loneliness of the protagonist a lot. The game in general feels a lot more like a standard action/horror set with a lot of monsters, while the first one had an eerie vibe which I ultimately favor a lot more. I think there is a good game buried under a lot of "tryhard" horror (a lot of jumpscares, horrific imagery notched to 11 since the first one) and a lack of investement on polished gameplay. Just add a parry or a dodge system, delete that Butcher gang girl, fix the menacing presence of the Ink Demon, and I think you have a solid step up on your hands. Not an awful experience, but I didn't have a great time, so I can't recommend it.Show moreShow less

The game looks amazing and I see many improvements that have been made since the first game. I would like to commend the ever-growing talent of the developers and I cannot wait to see where the franchise goes in the future. That being said... while I will recommend this game to those who are interested in the story and have played the previous games in the franchise, I really can't for anyone else. The game is a mess. (I'll do my best not to spoil anything major. You have been warned.) First off, I may start to be getting pretty old, but the amount of times I got physically lost in the game was a bit more than I cared for. Even when the game accounts for old farts like me and gives me a way-pointer to show me where the objective is it is rarely there. For instance, it will give a step-by-step with markers on how to go down a long hallway, with the end clearly visible on the other side but, if it wants me to backtrack to some area while I'm chased down by enemies while it charges me to find some lever I can't see in the back corner of a room well... that's just my problem then. There is no consistency. That brings me to another point and this is for the devs. A dum-dum like me has a hard time enjoying the game if I can't see the Interactables! I wandered around the whole opening area looking for a switch that I couldn't find because I hadn't yet learned what they looked like and since they blended in with the rest of the background I was at a loss. When you are working with a color pallet as monotone as this you need to find ways to illustrate what needs to be interacted with. In this first play-through I'd say that out of all the interact-ables, more than half of them were poorly visible to me, the first-time player. Now let's talk about the enemies. These things are variable and annoying, but not in a good way. We are introduced to enemies before we have a way to defend ourselves or hide so at first we kind of just have to take the abuse. Then we get introduced to standard enemies and being stealthy to get around. After fiddling with an honestly wonky stealth system they give you a weapon and finally, those standard guys aren't as scary anymore. All is well and good. However, they don't prepare you for the nonstandard guys. Of course, I have a weapon now, they should be the same as the rest. At most they should maybe be a little more girthy or hard to hit... well that turned out to be true. Not only are they hard to hit, they are indestructible! Seriously, whenever these guys come out you might as well just take the punch and heal up later. NO MATTER WHAT you will get hit. These are bullies looking to give you a wedgie and unless you are standing right outside your home they will get what they want. Heck, sometimes they are waiting inside your home, having tricked your guardian into believing that they were your friend only to jump you when you thought you were safe. The only reason for these enemies to exist is so that the food the devs worked so hard on doesn't go to waste. If it wasn't for these guys, the other enemies in the game would be manageable even without food. Then there is our Ink Demon the Mr. X of the franchise, an always a looming presence just waiting for his chance to ruin your day. This time around there is no indication of his coming. You could be sitting there smelling the flowers on a crisp and sunny day when all of a sudden he'll spit his thick inky saliva in your eyes and force you to take cover for the earthquake drill that is his impending presence. You cannot run from him as instead of being physically present the attack appears to be on a timer that will catch you unless you place a single board on top of or head and pretend that you are a can of bacon soup! Seriously, he, along with all other enemies, can't tell the difference between an enemy and thin air as long as a piece of cloth is over your head. With enemies of course eventually comes death. Instead of having the ink fountain deposits like in the previous game to squirm out of when you die you go back to the last save of your choice. While the idea is great and done in many big games in this modern era the execution of it in this game is as poor as one could make it. One would think that an auto-save system would save whenever you complete an objective but, the way it is executed here is by saving when you reach a certain point in the world. For instance, during one of the collect-o-thons in the early stages of the game, I had found the exit to an area before having found all the items that I needed. So I went back and grabbed them and completed the task. Later on, I was unfortunately killed by the demon and when I loaded up the auto-save it brought me back to the time before I found the collectibles. If I hadn't made a manual save after having collected all my doo-dads then I'm certain I would have quit the game right then and there because I would have lost about a half-hour of playtime. From that point on I learned to update my save after every little event. Something that I suggest all new players do or you're in for a bad time. Finally, I just want to bring up collectibles. Just pick up everything that isn't nailed down. They aren't going to explain what they are or what they are used for they just hope that you pick them up. The same thing goes with upgrades. That was the most jarring thing of the game. When you see the upgrade you won't know what it is and when you interact with it the game goes into zero explanation as to why your character would think to use it as they do in any way. I swear, for a girl that woke up in an unknown world she is very rarely thrown aback by her situation. Sometimes she is horrified by her situation other times it feels like this is just another one of her Tuesdays. Not even going to go over the fever dream that is the opening to this game. Apologies for unloading so much, but this game while good in lore is lacking a lot in terms of gameplay, story, and relatability. This game could have been better. I feel that they would have been on their way there if they had done more playtesting. Hopefully, they will give the eventual sequel the care that this series deserves.Show moreShow less

Reading other reviews on this game makes me feel like an insane person, I loved the first game despite its flaws so was looking forward to a sequel 5 years later to improve on the formula, and it really didn't in any sense. You now have a weapon that you can upgrade, but there are 3 pre-determined places you can get very specific upgrades in the story, instead of a variety of upgrades you can spend materials on at stations throughout the game. Bendy used to show up and stalk the halls, now you just get a vague ''Bendy is nearby'' and after a few seconds you die unless you hide, seems lazy compared to how he worked in the first one. He'll also do this completely randomly so many times he'll do it when you're nowhere near a hiding spot, or when you're in a location that you can only leave by flowing, but he'll do it when it's on cooldown so you just die, did no one QA test this? Enemies just will. not. stop. spawning. I like clearing out an area so I can look around for collectibles and materials, and I will kill 6 lost ones, walk into the next room, then come back and there are 6 more lost ones. Infuriating, and there's no stealthing past that many. Also, what's the point of limited materials if 1. there are only three weapon upgrades and 2. you can just farm them off infinitely spawning enemies? Jumpscares. Boy did these get tiring quickly, one or two worked at the start and then it was just jumpscare after jumpscare, especially after releasing Carley . Every single story beat I called. I was always like ''oh I bet x will happen'' and then it did, zero surprises, completely predictable. All questions I had about the first game and the story, all the answers to my theories, is all just dumped on you in a big dialogue of exposition by a character completely anti-climactically, show don't tell, please. I really hate leaving a bad review because the game is so beautiful, and I am a massive Bioshock fan so I really feel and notice all the homages and the inspiration, and so much passion was put into the project, but the whole thing is just a frustrating chore to play, and it's been 2-3 years since it was released so it doesn't seem like my issues will be changed/fixed. Sorry dev team but I know you can do much better. Edit: Forgot to mention this point when I initially wrote the review, giving the ink demon a voice and having him yapping edgy dialogue at you was a baaaaad move. Instantly removed any creepiness or scariness he had.Show moreShow less

Bendy and the Dark Revival or "We have Bioshock at home" As I have not played the first game I can not say if this game is an improvement over the predecessor or not. Pros: + story is pretty interesting + graphics look good for an indie game + sound and music are very good, voice acting is servicable + reminiscent of Bioshock in many ways Cons: - everything gameplay is just bad. - combat is simplistic, you can hit and thats about it. - stealth is mindnumbingly slow, repetitive and pointless because enemies respawn all the time as soon as you round a corner and turn back. Also, stealth kills (banishes) dont give you materials which can be bad if you want to fully upgrade your ONE weapon down the line. - the flow ability is inconsistent as hell. It's basically the dishonored forward-teleportation but it works differently all the time, depending on what the dev wanted to do at any given point. Sometimes you can teleport through small openings, most of the time you can't. Sometimes you have to aim your teleport directly at the edge of a platform, so the protagonist can pull himself up. Most of the time you have to aim above the platform because the protagonist can't actually pull herself up. Sometimes you teleport a long way forward, most of the time you don't. This unreliability makes the ability cumbersome to use outside of combat and unusable inside of it. - there is so much in this game that says "Bioshock has this, we need to have this too", but without rhyme or reason - like the aforementioned upgrading of your ONE weapon. You have one weapon that you can upgrade up to three times (pretty much two times, the third upgrade is so far out of the way of the normal story that most people will miss this) and they build a whole SYSTEM with materials and weapon upgrade stations just for this! Insanity! - Yes, you can use materials to build safe keys, but I would bet serious money that they implemented the safes after they realized thet they put a whole system in place that has practically no use. Anyway, building safe keys is nothing but burning ressources, there is ONE safe in the entire game that has something worthwile and all other safes have random contents that are ALWAYS inferior to what building a key costs. - Backtracking in combination with "fast" travel is another thing they implemented (badly) that is completely unnecessary and useless. They added two side quests to justify this endeaver but the game would have been better off without it. The way fast travel works is that you can use respawn wells to jump between two points. Not all wells are activated for this and two wells that work are always connected to each other, so you have to remember or take note which wells are connected to each other. There is no map whatsoever in this game. SO if you want to get from the end of the game to the beginning, you basically have to daisy chain well jumps together. Its cumbersome and not at all fast. It's also useless for completionists, since they managed to put some collectibles in a flashback that you cant even reach with backtracking. Dumb as hell. - random events without rhyme or reason, sometimes stacking up to lead to inevitable death. Think ink demon + combat, ink demon + butcher gang event, ink demon in places where no hiding spot is within reach. Basically, ink demon sucks. - overuse of cheap jump scares that desensitize you within the first hour, making you completely numb to any "horror" this game tries to throw at you. For me, this game is a 4/10 at best and a prime example of a game, that would be better off, if large parts were left on the cutting room floor.Show moreShow less
