I really wanted to like this game, but it's really bad game play - at least on PC with mouse and keyboard. Sometimes the things the game tells you to do (i.e. press this button or that button) don't work at all (I'm used to games with QTEs, so I know how these work). At some stages, I just had to let time pass for the game to progress because it didn't accept the buttons I pressed. It was incredibly frustrating to progress. After some time, maybe halfway through the game, I just lost interest in even continuing as the story wasn't interesting to enough to keep dealing with the crappy controls.Show moreShow less

I'm going to give two ratings; one as a narrative and one as a game. Narrative: A Game: F As usual with my interest in gaming, Adventure and story-rich games are my goto. I've always preferred them and am always playing a couple at a time. I have played a significant number of interactive movies and I can say, story-wise, this is one of the best. Just like works of past from Quantic Dreams. There are great build-ups of characters and stories and weave together well. Some of it is pretty linear in expectation but that's not necessarily bad. As with most branching stories, how my choices affect things in the end, I'm unsure but I roleplayed Jodie the way I wanted (Life>Alone). This leads me to my first main gripe with the characters. In the end, I rped that Nathan and Cole were my true family and I wanted to spend time with them but that was never an option. To my Jodie, this made the most sense bc they were the ones consistently caring about her. Contrary to Ryan, who I loathed from the beginning, I was forced into prospective encounters with him that I was uninterested in having event after rejecting him many multiple times. This aspect of the character growth was clearly biased and was the biggest negative from the narration side. All of the actors are amazing and a true testament to games as story telling. A++++ And now on to the major negatives about it as a game: it's horrible. There is a principle in Human-centered design that the more simple you make something, the more intuitive and versatile it becomes. However, the interaction principles in this game are probably the worst I've experienced in an IF game. Most interactions display a single dot. Sometimes it's to click and move in a direction; sometimes it's to click and drag in or out; sometimes it's to move two dots to channel light to Jodie. It's clear the intended presence of this UI modality is to keep it simple in other sequences but often you have to push a whole other combination of keys (WASD/Shift/1,2,3,4/Space/Left,Right Click) and sometimes they are timed or require holding or taping. That is 12 different buttons with two different modes for 24 different combinations at a minimum. I cannot count the number of times I selected the wrong thing because there were two different dots with no indiciation which one does what. This simplified UI makes the interaction infuriating. I HIGHLY recommend the UI design group at Quantic to take some Edward Tufte workshops to actually learn the fundamentals. The second major gripe is the shaky cam. What in the literal eff?!?!? Nearly every scene uses a shaky cam at some point. Since this was originally a console game, the FOV is very narrow; near FOV plus shaky cam on an Ultrawide...vomit inducing. Some of the scenes were so unbearable I had to take breaks after. The shaky cam also phase shifts the UI as well so interaction icons are unreadable. These are fundamental flaws and are representative of amateur mistakes. I chose to play solo and the remixed chronology and I think it worked pretty well. All in all, love the story, hated the interaction. I will watch youtube for the remainder of the endings.Show moreShow less

I wanted to like this game.. and I still do but so far the controls for keyboard and mouse are the worst I've come across.. couple that with the mechanics where there's no explanation to the actions on cue .. it took me nearly 2 hours to figure out.. when it wants both left and right clicks and movements with the mouse.. left shift and the #2 while hitting W for forward.. what the hell? or combat training where your following the motion it asks you to move the mouse but fails to tell you that you need to hold down left click while doing that or it doesn't register your motion.. it will tell you you went too fast and wait for the arrow to point what direction to go.. or you went too slow when it doesn't show up on the next attempt.. so I spent 15-20 mins failing from lack of instruction or intuitive controls.. this game feels like they ported it over and from there couldn't be bothered to polish off the controls to the point where I can only assume they just want you to turn your head and cough while they search for your wallet.. I will continue to play it because I like the story and the graphics alone makes it look nice.. I wish they didn't assume everyone has controllers and have played on console that they should have a controller.. For those that haven't bought it yet you've been forewarned this controls are garbage and it'll just make you rage as it clunks along..Show moreShow less
I love this game's story and theme but my god, the controls, especially in quick time events, can be painful at times.Show moreShow less
There are choices in this game, but not many, and very few of them mean anything. The game doesn't feel challenging or even very interactive. There are a few sections where, after watching a cinematic, the player regains control of the protagonist, but all they can do is open a door to trigger the next cinematic. Why not just make the whole thing one long cinematic? There were some really strange script and storytelling choices in there too. One of the characters says (I'm paraphrasing) "save the world, please... do it for me" shortly after going crazy and trying to kill the main character. There's also the "oh hey I told the CIA they could conscript you but decided not to say anything until after they arrived to take you away, but honestly I have your best interests at heart, please go with these abrasive strangers, do it... do it for me..." moment. In other words, the plot is pretty clumsy. It feels like the writer/s must have had seven or eight different chapters they wanted to run, but no idea how to string them together. There are also a lot of hugs in this game. That might not normally be a bad thing but I think about 75% of the chapters end with someone hugging the protagonist. I liked Heavy Rain (which also occasionally had moments where the only interaction the player could perform was pulling a lever or pushing a button to trigger the next cutscene) and I wanted to like Beyond: Two Souls, but its execution felt scattered and less of a game more of a long, drawn-out cutscene that tries to trick you into thinking you have any agency over the plot.Show moreShow less
