Changing my review to Not Recommend, after arguing with another reviewer about the music. He said the music was good, and I was shocked since there was only a bit of melody played over and over. I kept thinking about this, and I realized there is not a lot to like about this game, except that it is inexpensive and it works. But is that the bar that must be met for me to RECOMMEND this game? I certainly would not recommend this game to a friend. After playing this for thirty seconds, I was pretty well bored with it, and while I will certainly play it again, I would not recommend anyone get it. Let's compare it to another asteroid clone called Maelstrom on the Macintosh computer that totally blew me away, in 1995. When I first played Maelstrom, I could not get away from the keyboard for hours. I looked forward to playing it over and over. And yet the two games are so similar, with ship upgrades, a race for higher scores, rotating and thrusting for movement... Now here it is twenty years later, and what does Bit Blaster have that Maelstrom doesn't? Plus, Maelstrom was released as free software, so you can download it even before you finish reading this review. I am fairly certain that the majority of reviewers would be spitting mad if they had purchased the Bit Blaster game for the ten dollars that most light steam games have for a price. I do not think the overwhelming positive reviews are a good reflection of the quality of this game, except that people have very low expectations when they are getting what they see as a bargain. (And my sympathies in advance to the game author, who no doubt will read this and try to respond, as I have seen him do to other negative reviews. I do understand you put a good faith effort into creating, pricing, and supporting this game.) In hopes of being balanced here, I want to point out that there is a nine MP3 track DLC that unlocks at no cost. It is chiptune music. I initially did not notice it, and it may be interesting for people still considering a purchase.Show moreShow less

It's cheap, yeah. That's the main thing everyone seems to say in this game's favor. "Well, it didn't cost me anyhting!" I wanted to like this game but found it simplistic, unenjoyably limited, and lacking strategy. The game artificially limits you in ways that games like Asteroids (yeah, that one, from the 1980s) doesn't. Let that sink in for a moment. In this game, you are constantly moving forward. You cant stop or vary your speed below the minimum threshold of thrust/velocity. The only thing you can do is boost to further speed up, but once you unlock the 2nd ship, it's already too fast even without boost. This causes a problem with another limitation that Asteroids didn't have - in Bit Blaster, if you touch the edges of the screen, you die instantly, rather than wrapping around to the other side (you know, a feature that is actually fun). Finally, in this game you are forced to constantly shoot at an automated rate, which removes all strategy from aiming and placing precise shots, and is further compounded by the fact that ammo is severely limited and once you run out, you literally cant fire at anything until you pick up more ammo, which drops as loot from things that you destroy (see the catch 22?). I guess other people like those features but to me they are pointless limitations that ruin any sense of strategy or fun. This game forces you to play by its rules at all times, in direct contravention to the established rules of this genre since basically the beginning of video game time. Sorry, but I didn't like it and do not recommend it.Show moreShow less
I really do like Bit Blaster XL I like this old school styled shooter so much, I would love to see a sequel to it? *hint* As of this review I see that it is currently on sale at only £0.39, just 39p. BUY IT! Even though I have all the achievements, I still play this game frequently as my sort of Quick Launch Game to gauge whether I am in the mood to play any other games, if you follow me. See, sometimes I put on GTA V and by the time it takes to load, then load online mode and then to get into a match lobby, I have lost all desire to live play it. This game helps me to just boost up Steam and launch into it and be gaming within 20 seconds. A few hours later, I realise I am still playing it. So then... About that sequel?Show moreShow less
I can't see why this has so many positive reviews and so few negative ones. Rather than being comparable to arcade classics like Asteroid and Space Invaders, it's a pretty average free-to-play mobile game, like an uninspired Tilt To Live clone, up on Steam for some reason. The good: Responsive, not buggy, there's a game here with an element of skill. Graphics and sfx are simple, but appealing. Seems well-programmed and highly compatible. Occupies your attention if you need to kill time. The bad: Unoriginal. Slow, dull start. Awkward control scheme, without enjoyable movement physics (space-themed graphics, but drives like a car). Success seems more based on randomness than skill, due to random power ups and enemies. No real depth. Skinner-box unlockables. Music is an earworm that gets old fast. Bottom line: It's not like it's crushingly terrible, and it's certainly not expensive, but why spend time playing this with so many other options?Show moreShow less
Better than No Mans sky and 1/60th the price.Show moreShow less
If so just play Super Bit Blaster XL which is an improvement to this game.Show moreShow less
Asteroids with powerups and upgrades. Delivers the goods for the price. Sweet game for arcade/high-score enthusiasts.Show moreShow less
This will be a contrarian negative review in a seas of positive reviews, but I just didn't find the game all that fun. The controls/movement felt a little jank, and I didn't find the gameplay loop awfully appealing. Maybe a more modern fleshed out version of the game would resonate better with me. However, the pricing of the game is very cheap and comes with achievements + trading cards... so if you want to give it a try, by all means.Show moreShow less
