Original Review: I was enjoying the game. Sure, the systems were rough and the fishing kind of sucked, and sure, there were occasional lag and crashing issues, but nothing awful for early access. Then, suddenly, my save game was lost. 22 hours of playtime gone. I don't know what caused it, but I am pretty sure I was near the end game, venturing into swarm lands and the like. Don't buy in early access. Save yourself. Wait until these issues are resolved. Update: After my save file was lost, a community manager reached out to me to offer help with the issue, which is far more than I've come to expect from games I've bought through Steam in general. Given this, I've updated the review to positive, because even though a glitch seems to have caused me issues, this was far better than I expect from any dev, much less a relatively small developer. Update 2: While my save was unrecoverable, they offered to build me a save, which is frankly going above and beyond! While this review started as a negative one, I now recommend this game in the strongest possible terms, for the fact that the creators of this game genuinely care, and have been extremely helpful.Show moreShow less
There's a good game in here but it's fundamentally flawed. Did you want unskippable cutscenes? Not the end of the world, but how about rewatching the same unskippable cutscene over and over because you're trying a boss again? Yea that gets old quick. Did you like dying during cutscenes? Yea that happens too. Get too close to an objective while under fire and your camera pans to some NPCs chit-chatting or a panoramic of a majestic hand crafted island, only to come back to no health or death because you're reading... Perhaps you'd like to fight a boss and run out of ammo? Health? If you're going to give bullet-hell style levels out, you need to follow the rules and ensure it's a fair fight by dropping some pickups. Ready for a grind? Because that's what you're in for. Islands you liberate come under attack, annoying in its own right, requiring you to drop everything and alter course to defend hapless citizens. It's Preston Harvey all over again, but outright worse, because you lack the ability to fast travel, can have no followers, and set up no defense (yes you can set up turrets, but they don't do anything until you're on screen with them...). Speaking of grinding, it turns out you're the lone hero in this game. Everyone is capable of nothing, and you are capable of everything. These kind of games are... slow. Need resources? Go get them yourself; no one else contributes. Need to defend an island? That's on you, too. Need to conquer an island? You're a one woman army. Boss battle? Yea, go right ahead, hide behind your steel door and let me take care of it... The story is predictable but interesting, and the islands and their puzzles are quite fun to play, so again - there's a good game here. It's just filled with annoyances that make it unbearable. Trying to make headway and you're turned around to defend an island or fetch some junk - again and again - making it less of a game and more of a chore.Show moreShow less

This game was one that a week back I would have recommended without a second thought. I am not exaggerating when I say I will never play it again after the devs rolled back years of progress building good game mechanics overnight in favor of dumbing down and or removing all the features that made the game work for some reason. Never in my life have I seen a steam early access game have a release update that stripped so many mechanics only to be replaced by nothing. Heads up to the devs people werent staying around for the 'amazing' gunplay it was all the other things you just removed. Ignore all positive reviews prior to 8/15/23 they were reviewing a different game all together.Show moreShow less
If you liked Heat Signature, you'll probably like this. The gameplay's fine, but the tone is all over the place, like the team couldn't decide if they wanted to make a whimsical Stardew Valley, or a gritty Hotline Miami, I like both flavours, but it's strange mix that I don't think Black Skylands pulls off. It's so distracting that even though the game is fine, and I'm recommending it, I'm not going to talk about anything else here. The main character, Eva, seems to be the biggest victim of this tonal whiplash. When the game starts, she appears like she's going to be a feisty, adventurous young sky captain, but it very quickly turns out she's a blank, emotionless killing machine. Maybe that's part of the story they're trying to tell with her character, that she's so traumatised by the fighting that she's just dead inside, but there's zero payoff to it, you're just stuck with this vapid protagonist for the rest of the game. This makes many of the attempts to be more whimsical and humorous fall flat, as well as attempts to amp up the drama or deliver a moving moment, like the death of a character. Then there are moments like when a blind inventor creates a faulty drone that on activation immediately goes and murders a village of innocents, it's played for laughs, and maybe a game like Borderlands could pull off something like that, but here it's just jarring and the humour doesn't land at all. It's also pretty crappy to have one of the few disabled characters in the game be used for lazy ableist tropes about blind people being incompetent. The game's still in early access so maybe Hungry Couch will have another think about that one. But anyway, if you liked Heat Signature, you'll probably like this.Show moreShow less
This game went from one I would recommend to NOT recommend over night. Upon release they made too many drastic changes to the game. Removed the crafting system, ship building and armor. These were some of the features that made the game interesting. Now progression is very bland and you simply dump steel (currency) into stats. They should've expanded upon the game in its previous state instead of removing so much.Show moreShow less
This is a hearty thumbs up from me- it's a great adventure game, with a story that fits the purpose well. Includes airship combat, which you can think of pirate-navy stuff- replete with upgrades, various ships, etc. Big open world, and everything you go out to do feels like a grand adventure. I think this one is going to be a home-run when it's fully finished. Here's the caveat- it is modestly buggy right now. Not severe, but you'll probably hit a few snags. Big open world games are like that, and it's good that they're taking an EA period, because at the moment, it's a very, very cool game- with bugs. So, if you're jumping in for early EA- know what you are getting into. The game is, as far as I can tell, full of content- no shortage on that front, although it sounds like they will still add more. It's not just the first chapter that has been released- releasing 1/4 of a game is a method that I REALLY do not care for. Not the issue here. However, you're going to hit some bugs. So far, it has been perfectly weatherable for me. Worst was a bridge that I kept falling through, which fixed itself on a restart. Some other hiccups here and there. However, as of now, you cannot have multiple saves: this could be a BIG problem if you hit a gamebreaking bug. I don't think these are common, but I have heard of a few over on the discord channel. So- buyer beware: this game came out in EA yesterday. It is an absolute joy, but if you want to play it now, just be aware that you are part of the testing team. If you're not willing to potentially lose a save, wait a bit. Quick Edit: This is getting some scathing thumbs-downs for some pretty easy-to-fix reasons- reload icon blocks enemy fire visibility, boss cut-scenes currently not skipable, etc... these are reasonable complaints, but they don't speak to the actual quality of the game. The dev team has made a point of being open to feedback and criticism- I have full faith that these quibbles will be fixed. And if can't abide playing a female main character, may I recommend an F-350 to compensate for your tiny balls?Show moreShow less
I want to say, first and foremost, that I have played about 20 hours of Black Skylands in EA (early access) from a friends library on steam and I LOVED the game. It had so much potential, so many good mechanics and a great story behind it! I finally pulled the finger out to buy it for myself (part of a bundle, Humble bundle I think) and... I am disgusted. Disappointed. Ashamed. I feel cheated out of the game I loved. Out of the game I waited so long to buy so there would be no bugs and a more fleshed out game but the developers released "1.0" and... well, let's get to it below what happened. What went wrong with the game after 1.0 ⚫So the reason why 1.0 is terrible is because of this - they removed EVERY SINGLE "core" aspect of the game that we all loved in EARLY ACCESS ranging from the character progression and upgrade systems to ship combat and so much more. ⚫You can upgrade on the go.... WHAT? All crafting tables are now... USELESS... ⚫They removed "Faction wars" making the game feel DEAD. It was an amazing addition to the game that made it feel alive. ⚫ They even messed with the story making it a dull "shooter" rather than you "protecting" your family. ⚫They turned it into a "material/resource grinding" game with the ability to "liberate outposts", collect "collectables" and have meaningless side activities. If you think on it... kinda sounds like "FAR CRY" eh... ⚫You can capture ships for materials... that's it.... cannot salvage these for "parts" or "guns" from them. ⚫ You can liberate outposts/islands.... they don't do anything. They don't even produce materials for me... what is the point in these mechanics? A steam post for you guys to read Below I will include a steam discussions post of what the developer said to someone else about WHY they "took/stripped" everything out of the game: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1143810/discussions/0/3816290897722231741/?ctp=6 I will also show you the update that ruined Black Skylands below: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1143810/announcements/detail/5281075423638830168?snr=2___ My Verdict They advertised a game on steam as a "product" in its own and completely changed EVERYTHING about the game so we did not actually get what we were shown and then, instead of owning up to the "mistake" they made for not listening to PLAYER FEEDBACK they said this - "Most likely, I will not be able to answer as a developer so that my answer satisfies everyone. But it will be honest to share with you. We did everything to ensure that the game was released on schedule and was a finished product. It would take many times longer to assemble all early access mechanics into a single complete product. We didn't expect such reaction from our players who had played the game before. And we understand this reaction. We are sorry that this has left many players unhappy. In an ideal world where we would have more time and budget, maybe the game would be different. The game is complete and in any case, I am proud of our first project, in which we invested a lot of time and effort. We have learned a lot from this project. In the future, we definitely will be more sensitive to big changes in mechanics, even in early access." If this is the case... why even go into EA in the first place if you are going to just replace EVERY single part of the game that EVERY SINGLE fan/player of Black Skylands loved. They lied to us about what we were going to get and did not listen to feedback at all from us. This is a developer that should be PENALISED for their actions. If you did not play EA If you do not know what you are missing out on... then you will probably like/love the game as you never got to see the "AMAZING" game that Black Skylands was before 1.0. 1/10. I cannot recommend a game from a developer that does not listen to player feedback and ruins their own game just to make a quick buck from "RELEASE"Show moreShow less
I love this game in its present state, and can't wait for the 1.0 release. Think Skies of Arcadia fused with Hotline Miami combat. Using your grappling hook feels great, ship combat feels great, on-island combat feels great, the aesthetic of the game is beautiful, ship/equipment customization is intuitive and lets you play your way, and exploration is never boring. I sank about 24 hours into the game, completing the story and collecting all the things I could (with exception of a few of the late game weapons and their mods, but none of the Raid content, as that doesn't appeal to me in the slightest). My one and only complaint is the enemies that can grab items out of your hold - they (both the Falcon and Swarm versions) could be completely removed and the game would be more enjoyable for it. I can't recommend it more, and I wish there was more to do so I could keep playing it, to be honest. Totally worth the cost at full price, and a steal on sale.Show moreShow less
Good game but various functionality breaks if you rebind the keys (can't undock, can't throw grenades). This was reported six months ago and hasn't been fixed, with the developer just telling people to reset their keybinds. I can't play the game properly with the default keybinds so the game is unplayable for me until fixed.Show moreShow less
