Game plot is clunky, mechanics including the ones with the dog are malfunctioning most of the time. There are a ridiculous amount of glitches was overwhelming. Being stuck in places, stuck in cutscenes, screen going black and having to reload. Lastly, the teleportation when you go too far makes the game feel stupid. Slowing you down in an area is NOT added content, I dont know who thought of that. Scuffed.Show moreShow less
While the optimization could be improved, I haven't had many issues (GTX 970) But ignoring the slight performance issues, the game so far is amazing The Confusing Forest is hard to navigate, and it creates a sense of being lost and helpless The gameplay is alright, plays like a weird Outlast / Walking Simulator, but overall it's enjoyable Remember, The negative reviews are all to do with optimization, not the game itself (I haven't encountered any of the issues people are talking about though). This is definitely a buy Edit: i love how because i said something positive about the game i got comments calling me a paid shill, look at my pfp, take a second to realize its cropped yiff, and then ask yourself if im a paid shill again, dumbassShow moreShow less
The first thing that most people probably think about when they hear "Blair Witch" is some lost people running around in circles in a forest, and snotty up-the-nose camera shots of a horrified person recording their final monologue for friends and family. It's true that The Blair Witch Project changed horror films forever upon its release in 1999; it gave birth to an entirely new sub-genre of horror films that's now known as found footage. The movie itself has been referenced innumerable times throughout pop culture, and now it has finally been turned into an actual video game. Blair Witch is a sequel to its hit-and-miss predecessor, as it takes place in 1996 where the film took place in 1994. Of course Blair Witch takes place in the Black Hills Forest of Burkittsville, Maryland, the same location as the original film, and gamers play as Ellis; an ex-soldier and former police officer who becomes enlisted in the search for a nine year old boy named Peter. The boy is lost in the same woods as the group of tourists from 1994, so Ellis brings along his dog, Bullet, to help sniff out clues and trails to make navigating the dense thicket just a bit easier. Armed with nothing else but a walkie-talkie and a flashlight, Ellis sets out on possibly the last search and rescue mission of his life, all while uncovering just some of the macabre secrets that the overgrown forest holds. It's hard to make a game about wandering around in the woods. It's even harder to make an interesting game about wandering around in the woods. While Blair Witch is full of good ideas, decent scares, and captivating psychological horror, much of the core gameplay comes across as hollow filler. In between segments of killing Treants in a similar style to the monsters in Alan Wake and solving some entry-level puzzles, players will find themselves just... walking. There are several sections of just walking in the early part of the game that take far too long, and there are equally as many portions of just stealth sneaking in the latter part of the game that take up way too much time. It's a very slow paced title that may very well end up letting your mind wander before wrenching your thoughts back with a random jump scare. As mentioned earlier, Ellis has brought along his dog Bullet to help out, though he rarely does anything useful without being told to. Sometimes he'll be nice enough to bring litter to Ellis for safe keeping and later disposal... if he makes it out of the woods alive, that is. Equipped with several commands, gamers can pet Bullet and give him treats, as well as make him stay close, search for items, and reprimand him. If you wander close enough to a buried collectible, Bullet should take initiative to dig it up on his own, but most of the time he has to be told to seek items out. Though it's easy to form a close bond with the dog, he is quite noisy and irritating at times; his persistent whining and barking at seemingly everything can break any sort of immersion that players build up, especially for those that like to take their time and fully explore every location. Although Bloober Team, the masterminds behind phenomenal horror masterpieces Layers of Fear and Observer, have boasted that Blair Witch contains five endings, only four have been found thus far. With that said, these four endings are quite terrible, they're barely different from one another, and they give zero reason to replay the campaign multiple times; especially given that the game must be completed over and over again in its entirety. In general, grabbing different endings mostly relies on how you treat Bullet, and overall they just don't give enough closure to the primary plot points that were established from the very start of the adventure. Despite the plethora of reviews touting that Blair Witch is filled with glitches, I didn't experience any during my 5 hour playthrough, though these things may have been fixed with a patch that was pushed out early on release day. However, regardless of the day-one technical patch, there are still some optimization issues. Though these problems aren't in abundance, frame rate drops still happen consistently in several areas and will do so no matter how powerful of a system you have, or what graphic settings you are using. There are people running RTX 2080 cards experiencing these frame drops, and my own i7-6700k/GTX 1080 rig saw as low as 45 FPS in some locations. Lastly, it must be said that the UI is ridiculously clunky and in no way modern. Much like its film counterparts, Blair Witch the game is hit-and-miss. It doesn't really excel at anything at all, but it does manage to make wandering through a cursed forest fairly interesting. It would've been made better if Bloober Team just cut out all of the unnecessary filler material in lieu of providing a shorter campaign, while chopping off $10 on the price of the game, to provide a more streamlined horror experience that consistently hits hard and fast. There are really some excellent ideas here, but the pacing is abysmal at best, the story is only vaguely strung together, and there are more plot holes than any other game I've played in at least the last decade. The topper here is just how bad all of the endings are, and the lack of variation between them all. Save yourself the money, but if you do get it then wait for at least a 50% discount. Rating: 2.5/5.0 - It's not awful, but it's not great. The Horror Network Curator | Group Click for GoreShow moreShow less
Where can I start? I loved this game... but I also hated it. Blair Witch is at first inspection a run of the mill horror walk through game, but if you play it through, it definitely becomes much more. You play as Ellis, and at first glance, we are not given much information on the character. Ellis has his companion dog, Bullet, who we find out fairly quickly is a police dog you were given at a point prior to the game, but beyond that, we are left to wonder who Ellis truly is. Your task: Find Peter, a boy who is lost in the woods. With your handy police dog, you will search for clues on the boy's whereabouts, hopefully leading to his discovery and apparently redeeming Ellis for a reason we do not yet know. Playing through is fairly straightforward at first, and definitely feels like a walking simulator. Eventually, you will come across your first actual puzzle, and here is where the actual game begins. You will encounter this puzzle throughout the game, and in my opinion, these will be the most difficult parts of the game. Many times what you should do is not immediately apparent if you did not pay close enough attention, and running around in circles for 30 minutes will leave you frustrated. If one thinks hard on what was presented to him, he will soon realize the answer to move the game forward. It is not impossible to solve the puzzles if you use your head. All that being said, as I played through the first 4 or so hours, I felt intrigued, but a bit bored. The horror element wasn't really there. Was the game atmospheric? Yes. Was it enough that I would say it really ranks on a horror scale? No. To my delight, this "failure" changes drastically in the last 3 hours of the game. The game becomes extremely hard to play through in the ending hours, and I'd even venture to say that it was, at times, almost unbearable. The psychological factor intensifies to extremes in the final chapters, and I was left very surprised. Many times, I had to break from the game as my head felt just as anxious as our character. At times, I wasn't sure if I could complete my quest to finish the game tonight. It honestly got into my head that much. The sense of dread is extreme in the last chapters. I will not post any spoilers here, but I will say that I believe you should give this game a fair chance. Playing through to the end is worth it. Apparently there is more than one ending based on at least one choice in the game, and I fully intend to play through again, making the horrible choice to see what will befall Ellis at the end of the game. I'm not looking forward to it though. The main choice you have to make is something that seems extremely inhumane if you go what I'd consider to be the "bad" route. *Small side note. This game feels like an EXTREME cross between Alan Wake and Outlast with the horror level being more so towards Alan Wake. I loved both games, so this game was an easy like for me. Onto the pros and cons. PROS -Atmospheric win. This game definitely works on an atmospheric level, and in the first hours, it is what the game does best. -Slightly challenging puzzles. The puzzles are easily solvable, however, if you do not pay attention carefully, you will be left wandering in circles for an extended amount of time. The game will not offer any extra clues, which I personally appreciate. -Graphics. The graphics are exactly what I'd expect from a newer game. While they are not perfect, I was happy with what was presented, and I never felt the game lacked in this department. -True horror. Possibly this is a slight spoiler............................................... this game does not have a happy ending. In a horror game or even movie, I cannot stand the happy end narrative. I think this rates as true horror based solely on this fact. You will have your sense of accomplishment for ending the game, but you will not be left in any positive mindset. If we relate this to real life, this is the most horrific outcome to any situation you can endure. CONS -Slow start. As I mentioned before, the game has a slow build-up. It does not make the game unplayable by any means, but it surely becomes a bit redundant in the starting hours. -Somewhat obvious story (for Ellis' background). Ellis' back story is not immediately apparent, and we are given clues throughout the game on who he is and what kind of person he is. Unfortunately, the game is a bit cliche with Ellis, and I feel I've heard that story line a thousand times from other games and movies. -Glitches. While I only encountered one glitch during the game, I was not pleased as it advanced me further into the game than I should have been. I was wandering around trying to get back to my dog when suddenly, I got stuck between trees and rocks, and I could not move. I was forced to restart from the main menu, and when I restarted, the game had advanced me to the next part of the chapter.. or possibly into the next chapter. I'm still not sure which. Either way, I never fully cleared what I was doing, but I was able to restart and advance without having earned it. ** All in all, I would say that this game is worth the play through for any horror enthusiasts. The end of the game is unbearably hard to play, and wins on all levels at this point. Not everyone will agree with me, but I rarely concern myself with other's opinions, and you should not either. Even my opinion of this game should be taken with a grain of salt. Ultimately, if you decide to purchase this game, I think you will rather enjoy the 8 hour play through if you don't nitpick incessantly. READ THE WHOLE THING TO UNDERSTAND WHY I GAVE IT A 'NO' Blair Witch is a very good addition to the Bloober horror series. And while it doesn't mimic or follow the movies all the way, it still manages to portray the feeling of confusion and anxiety that you'd get when you go into the woods on your own. Graphics are amazing, story is pretty good. Companion dog is absolutely amazing :D Combat mechanics were a bit tricky but after a few tries I got the hang of it and I really liked it. However I have to point out that this game DOES NOT allow changing its keybinds which made the game unplayable for me due to my disability. I had to reprogram my keyboard and mouse with AutoHotKey every time I wanted to play it which was ridiculously annoying. And that's why I can't recommend this game. Don't get me wrong, the game itself is good.. But for some reason, lots of game devs nowadays seem to skip the key binding feature even tho we're in 2019/2020 pretty much excluding lots of people from the experience and enjoyment of their games. Let this review be a personal request of sorts. If the devs want us to enjoy the games, they shouldn't decide what's the most comfortable way for us to play them.Show moreShow less
Alright. I took my time on this game. I really wanted to give it a fair review. And there's alot of reviews here that does not do justice to the game, at all. So if you actually feel like buying this, take some time too read this, and then make up your mind. LAUNCH: First off, the biggest reason this game has "mixed" atm om steam is because of the launch. It was terrible, bad optimization, lots of bugs. In other words, the game ran bad. Really bad. It still runs "okay" I'd say. Not bad at all, no stutters etc. But the fps could be better. Currently playing on a GTX 1060, my FPS varies between 50-70. So it still feels smooth, especially if you play on a controller. NOW THE GAME: The game isnt your typical horror style game, and it handels that really intressting. Here, the horror elements are in your mind, the atmosphare along with the level design is what does it, especially in the beginning. They are things in the forest that you "defend yourself from" a game mechanic that is also tied too your dog. (I don't want to spoil too much of that), but imo it was really cool and uniqe, which I liked. The story could take 3-4hours to finish. For me however, my first playthrough took 10 hours. And I really took my time. Mostly exploring and being more careful than I probably needed. As I mentioned before, the level design is mastercrafted. Even though it isnt "openworld" sometimes it does feel like it. And exploring is rewarding and may even open up different endings for you! At the end of the day, this is a psychological horror game that does not hold your hand. The dog does help you, but you have to be close too objects etc for the dog too pick up tracks. No, way markers, no minimap, and no hud. I've seen people complaining about "walking simulator" "lame horror game" etc. And first of all, what tf where you expecting? A role-playing Blair witch game? And, I could understand why people would think this is a "lame horror game". This isnt outlast with scripted chase scenes, or monsters everywhere etc, if that's your thing, then this isnt for you. But if you understand the Blair Witch mythos, and want a truly immersive experience with replayability and an really interesting lore-friendly story. Then this is as perfect as it gets.Show moreShow less
- So either my computer is cursed or the game is optimized very poorly but I had extreme lag spikes and fps drops on my GTX 1080 ti Ryzen 2700x & 16gb RAM pc. - Whenever I change the settings on the first "display" page, ALL the graphics options in the "advanced" section go to their max settings. - The first time I loaded into the game, I could not move my character at all, I had to reboot the game to actually be able to move. Not a strong start, I suggest waiting for patches before buying.Show moreShow less

I have never written a review despite owning games on steam for many many years. I am a huge fan of horror games. Outlast, layers of fear, alien isolation. I love them all. However this is the first time Im writing a review for a game in hopes that you don't make the same mistake I made. This game was complete trash. I actually didnt have any glitches through out my 5 hour playthrough and played the game on max settings. A game should be fun and entertaining. This game felt like work and a choir just to finish it and see if the ending was worth it (ITS NOT). I am more upset because of the story using a veteran and just giving the main character a horrible and honestly disrespectful ending. This game was fun for the first 10 minutes. The way the game starts is a complete lie because it comes across as a survival horror with puzzles. There's very few puzzles in this game and barely any combat if you even consider what the combat is in this game. I seriously havent felt robbed of money from a game in a long time. I give this game 4/10Show moreShow less
