EDIT: Overall, Brawlhalla has changed drastically since the release of this review. A lot of the information here is no longer correct and there are new gameplay features, dash being the most important. I certainly still feel that it is far too easy to avoid and/or delay interaction between yourself and the opponent, but it would be disingenuous of me to pretend the specifics of this review are still accurate. Although I am giving this game a positive review, I must say that it comes with a massive disclaimer. If you just play Brawlhalla with your friends and never take it seriously, you will likely enjoy yourself. However, if you ever get good at this game and play at a decently high level, Brawlhalla's glaring failures as a fighting game will become so unignorable that your desire to play it will steadily decline till you're on the subreddit crying about the passive float meta like everyone else. All of the reviews - including the negative ones - are ignoring the real problems with this game, and it's something I have thought about for a long time. So, I'll try to explain my reasoning as best as I can and briefly include the reasons why I still consider it worth downloading despite its enormous flaws. On the surface, Brawlhalla is an entertaining party game, provided you have some friends to play it with. So, if the only thing you're looking for is a simple game to kill some time (read: 1500 hours) with, download it. It is very easy to play and you are practically guaranteed to pick it up quickly regardless of your fighting game experience. Aside from being easy to play, it is also free to play and only cosmetic items cost money, so it is easy to get into as well. There are a good number of modes for you to play with your friends to prevent it from getting stale. You can level up your characters and unlock new colors for each few levels, so there is some degree of progression and playing a lot of one character can feel slightly rewarding. It also helps that a potato could likely run this game. While I do consider this game's positives enough to make it worth downloading, that’s just about all the positivity I have to share. As someone who has played and seen this game played at a very high level for many hours, I can confidently say that Brawlhalla is a fundamentally flawed mess. I'm not going to complain about the toxic community, or the netcode, or matchmaking, or any of the stuff you see other reviews complaining about. I'm only going to talk about the game's core mechanics and why it fails competitively. Brawlhalla has a dodge mechanic that grants virtually instant invincibility and makes you unhittable for nearly half a second. Dodging has very low risk because it has only 0.97 seconds of downtime and it is difficult to punish unless your opponent can predict exactly where you will dodge. You can dodge in 8 directions at any given time, and if you are running you can dodge twice in succession. When the iframes from the dodge end, you are able to jump or attack almost immediately, which is one of the main reasons why it’s so ridiculously safe. You can also jump in any direction 3 times, and once you're in the air you can quickly fall to the ground to get all your jumps back and continue hopping around. This combination of instant invincibility on a 1 second cooldown and an insane amount of aerial freedom results in a passive, floaty meta where playing optimally means avoiding making any approaches. Usually, making the first attack means risking being punished, whereas dodging or floating away is safe and can potentially put you in a position to punish a whiffed attack. Because of this, it often feels like you’re chasing your opponent rather than fighting them. Seriously, playing this game feels like you're in space with how effortlessly you can float around and avoid your opponent. Constantly approaching will get you killed faster than a lone cripple in a collapsing, burning building. Sometimes, salty players will run away from you in ranked just to troll you and you will have a very hard time catching them. Yes, this is a problem with the community, but it shouldn’t be possible in the first place. A key reason this happens is because dodging is a stupidly easy way to escape pressure. Any time you get hit you can just dodge in one of eight directions and reset the match to the neutral phase. Brawlhalla’s neutral phase is reminiscent of two kids hopping around on a jungle gym endlessly until one kid falls and hurts themselves (in this case, hurting yourself would be equivalent to approaching). Another issue that ties into dodging and movement is wall camping. It’s possible to wall camp almost endlessly and force your opponent into a disadvantage if they want to approach. Players have won tournament matches by abusing this. A mechanic was introduced that stops you from getting your jumps back after touching the wall too many times, but it's rather forgiving and you only need to touch the stage for a few frames before you can resume wall camping. Once you get comfortable with movement in this game, it’s incredibly easy to dance around on the wall for as long as you want. If you’re reading this and you don’t play Brawlhalla, you might be thinking that all the problems I’ve listed thus far could be addressed by nerfing dodge in some capacity. Unfortunately, the entirety of Brawlhalla has already been crafted and balanced around this awful mechanic. Certain weapons are better at punishing dodges than others, with some weapons capable of dealing massive damage on a precise dodge read. A considerable dodge nerf would mean that these weapons would benefit immensely and quickly become meta. The only way I can imagine this game’s passivity problem being fixed would be a colossal rework of dodging, jumping, and probably every weapon in the game as well. Understandably, the developers don’t know what that rework should be and how to conduct it. They’re trying to fix the game’s passive float meta by applying band aid fixes that ultimately do very little to address the huge, overarching passivity problem Brawlhalla has always had. The other day, I told myself I was going to play ranked with the only intention being to win, which meant playing fully passive and not caring what people thought of me. I quickly reached top 50 in the world doing this. Almost nobody gged me and plenty of people complained about my playstyle in post game chat. Admittedly, although I am never toxic to anyone regardless of how they play, I don't blame a single one of those people for their anger. Brawlhalla, when played at a high level, is legitimately one of the most frustrating fighting games to play in existence. Just imagine losing to someone after they avoided approaching you, wall camped, or outright ran away from you for the entire game. Considering this, it’s no wonder why Brawlhalla’s community is a cesspool of toxicity and noxious, salty fumes. As much as I want to give this game a negative review, I cannot justifiably do so. Most people who play this game will stay at a basic, casual level and never even notice or be forced to encounter the serious passivity problem this game has. So, despite my frustration with Brawlhalla, I am giving it a positive review. My recommendation would be to play with your friends and avoid taking this game too seriously. However, the prevalence of the passive float meta is noticeable as early as high platinum/low diamond, so be very forewarned and prepared to deal with it if you intend to play this game for many hours.Show moreShow less
The amount of time I've spent in this game would be surprising considering the score I'm giving it, but I cannot seriously recommend Brawlhalla when there are so many better ways to use your time. There's NO community in any online game I've faced (not even other F2P games such as LoL) that is as toxic as this one is. If you don't live close to one of the servers for this game your connection is jsut utter garbage. You're always gona have some sort of input lag. If you've ever played any fighting game you'll realize this game is very unbalanced and devs just cycle through metas to hype the tournaments up basically as they know exactly what they're doing and it's not balance. There's no penalty for doing or not doing stuff here (NO Rock Paper Scissors type of design you find in literally EVERY OTHER FIGHTING GAME). The whole economy behind this game revolves around being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, taunts are the best selling in-app purchase by a mile. If you don't live in the US (or one of the 1st world countries) then good luck trying to buy anything as the premium in-game currency price isn't region adjusted. The more you play and the farther you get (up to Diamond) the more passive and boring the game becomes. There's footsies, there's defensive oriented characters in other fighting games but this is ridiculous... some matches will be stalemates where your opponent will literally just run away. As a matter of a fact, running away is objectively more effective than anythign else which is an incentive to play passively. Why? Because you have more options to run away, dodge, defend, throw your weapon, etc than you have to approach. Why would I recommend a game whose population is mostly kids yet it has the most toxic players ever? Everyone is tired ofthe toxicity, of the passiveness and the overall same-ness of the game. You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, few people really talk about this but it is the truth. You can check "toxicity Brawlhalla" on Youtube... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ptcbKYpc9I (funny ending tho) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibx7yty3IrQ (this one is MUCH better at detailing the community) These are my issues with the way the game is being designed around (and balanced around): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czfxsFuEEws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZgVflTtAXM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jUMcof1Llk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fSapMtS0LU The game promotes a competitive scene, yet it lacks any balance to it. The fact they don't do anything about it yet they pour a new skin or toxic taunt every other month tells you what the developers' priorities are (its a business after all). Toxicity is a moneymaker. Even Brawlhalla's top players complain about the things mentioned and even more, yet in years those complaints have not been adressed at all. Boomie (#1-2 player depending on the year) has complained about a lot of stuff throughout the years, Sandstorm (undeniably #1) focuses on playing Smash competitively yet he absolutely DESTROYS this scene, eggsoup (ex-top 8 regular) constantly points out the problems with the community and the meta, dopameme (one of the guys who made the best exhibition combo videos) has complained and left the competitive scene due to several instances of lacking balance. These are people that have thousands of hours poured in the game and they all agree with this. Most Brawlhalla players will defend the game till the end as a fighting game but have never ever played other fighting games in their life. Being toxic and sending death threats and generally inappropiate slurs is the name of the meta. The game is addicting, not gonna lie, but I do not recommend it when you have to face an absurd amount of toxicity if you're a casual and an insanely passive and unbalanced meta if you're playing competitively.Show moreShow less

Not Recommended I didn’t “play” Brawlhalla. I survived it. Booted it up thinking I’d have a chill little platform fighter session. What I got instead was a psychological endurance experiment designed by a committee of caffeinated raccoons smashing random buttons on a keyboard labeled “BALANCE.” This game doesn’t have hitboxes. It has theoretical suggestions of violence. I have watched attacks pass through my character like we’re reenacting a low-budget ghost movie, only for my opponent to gently exhale in my general direction and send me rocketing into the upper stratosphere at Mach 7. I didn’t lose stocks. I achieved low orbit. Ranked mode? Ranked mode is a social study on how long a human can stare at the words “Defeat” before questioning their place in the cosmos. Every match is either: A teleporting demigod who hasn’t seen sunlight since 2014 A passive legend who thinks the floor is lava Or someone who discovered one move and decided that’s their entire personality The netcode feels like it’s being transmitted through two soup cans connected by emotional disappointment. I dodge? Apparently not. I jump? According to the server, I simply considered jumping and was punished for my ambition. The weapon balance reads like someone spilled coffee on the design document and just shipped whatever survived the stain. Some legends hit like they’re swinging collapsing stars. Others feel like they’re politely asking the opponent to reconsider standing there. go harder ♥♥♥♥ the game up Not Recommended Brawlhalla isn’t a game. It’s a federally unregulated stress test disguised as a platform fighter. I installed it for “a few quick matches.” Three hours later I was staring at my reflection in a dark monitor wondering where my will to live respawned and why it hasn’t come back yet. Let’s talk about ranked. Ranked in Brawlhalla is where optimism goes to get mugged in an alley by a guy named “xX_ScytheMain_Xx” who hasn’t blinked since the Obama administration. Every queue is a coin flip between: A teleporting sweatlord who moves like he’s buffering inputs from 2037. A passive goblin who treats the edge of the stage like it’s a timeshare. Or someone who discovered one combo on YouTube and decided that’s their entire bloodline. The hitboxes? Fiction. Myth. Folklore passed down through oral tradition. I have been hit by attacks that occurred in a different zip code. Meanwhile my attacks phase through opponents like we’re reenacting a romantic drama about missed connections. And the spam. Dear God, the spam. There are players who have pressed the same move so many times I’m convinced their keyboard has fused into a single depressed key. I’m not fighting a person. I’m fighting a malfunctioning microwave with Wi-Fi. The netcode feels like it’s powered by a hamster that clocked out mid-shift. I dodge on my screen. The server says, “Cute imagination,” and then deletes one of my stocks as a lesson in humility. Weapon balance? Some legends swing around neutron stars duct-taped to broom handles. Others feel like they’re gently waving pool noodles soaked in regret. I’ve been deleted at 60 damage by someone who looked like they were sneezing in my direction. And the community? Half philosophers explaining that losing is a “mindset issue,” the other half typing “ez” like they just performed open-heart surgery instead of side-lighting for six minutes straight. This game doesn’t reward skill. It rewards whoever is most comfortable living in a perpetual state of gremlin energy. I would rather: Step on a LEGO made of broken dreams Argue with a customer service chatbot for eternity Or listen to someone explain crypto at a family dinner Than queue ranked in this cosmic circus again. Brawlhalla didn’t just waste my time. It harvested it, distilled it into salt, and fed it back to me in matchmaking form. If you enjoy emotional instability, phantom hitboxes, and being launched into the sun by someone named “iTouchGrassSometimes,” this is your masterpiece. Everyone else? Save your sanity. Your keyboard deserves better.Show moreShow less

Devs refuse to fix the broken meta, they consistently buff characters that dont need buffing, and nerf others that have been getting nerfs for 3 years now. Some characters haven't had a buff since Beta and now because of the 34 odd characters and new weapon types, there's a massive skew to 2-3 specific weapon types that they won't fix. Devs don't read their own Steam discussion with countless threads from players complaining and noting specific things wrong with the game. Very frequent lag and desync issues the devs always blame on your ISP or your router rather than their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ servers. Can't leave out the ranked matchmaking that often times will put you against the same person 3, 4, 5, 6 times in a row despite there being thousands of people playing in any specific ranking bracket. Was my favorite game for the past 3 years, but it's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken and full of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ toxic players that I can't play this game anymore without getting angry at it. Get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft. Thanks for reading, this has been my TEDtalk.Show moreShow less

Do you love to spam and get away with it? Do you love having unbalanced weapons and legends in your game? Are you saltier than the sea? Do you like physics faker than Nicki Minaj's butt? Do you like buying overpriced cosmetic items? Do you like playing on servers hosted by a underclocked Raspberry Pi 1? Are you suicidal? Than this game is just right for you!Show moreShow less
