UPON LAUNCHING THIS GAME, MY COLD RED COMMUNIST HEART WAS IMMEDIATELY ASSUALTED WITH COPIOUS LEVELS OF FREEDOM. AFTER PLAYING THE GAME, I HAD TO SPEND SEVERAL HOURS READING MARXIST PROPAGANDA AND SPREADING IDEAS OF FREE HEALTHCARE TO AVOID BEING LURED BY THE SIREN CALL OF BASEBALL, APPLE PIE AND DEEPFRIED BUTTER ON A STICK, A FEW OF THE MANY TOOLS THE CAPITALIST MONSTER HAS AT ITS DISPOSAL. Broforce: Essentially Super Crate Box with short 2-minute levels instead of endless survival. Can be fun, but I wouldn't buy it again. I do enjoy it, though. I will continue to play it; I would just have rather spent my money on another game. [Post-Scriptum: This game is reminding me more and more of Super Crate Box, another Devolver game. (or Vlambeer at least). The menu, the small character, weapons, changing of weapons like the crates.] [Post-Post-Scriptum: I played Expendabros. It is free-to-play, and is a seperate game, so I cannot include its review here. I can say, though, that it is a sell-out game, and an advertisement.] WARNING NOTE: Before reading my review, please understand that this game wasn't made for me and that it might be for you. I strongly recommend actually watching gameplay. The reason I was upset with this game is because I was expecting a game like Contra: an actual campaign, actual storyline, etc. In most games I don't like, I appreciate the theory of the game they are trying to make, but have problems with the execution... However, Broforce suffers from the opposite. I actually do think this game fulfilled what it was attempting to make, but I don't like even the idea. I bought it to play with a friend, and I will update this review if playing with him has changed anything. I don't like the short 2-minute levels. That is the entire campaign. Everything is 1-hit, you and enemies. Like Super Crate Box, if you collect the Bros (boxes) you will change Bros (weapons) and eventually unlock new Bros (weapons). There is no health bar, no struggle to stay alive. All death feels accidental. There's no real teamwork because you can't protect people from 1-hit kills. It's a free-for-all. Pros: -Some nice little details: Sound in headphones follows character on screen, good particle effects -Includes many famous characters from famous American movies which does embody the American opinion of power and patriotism -I really enjoy the feel of the characters, especially Snake Plisskin, J from MiB, and Ash Williams -I like the friendly AI, I didn't expect it and it does allow some strategy -Movement is very smooth and I like swinging from underneath rocks -Playing as the big robot is a nice change-up -The rocket-launcher guy is my favorite boss fight, please do more of this, and earlier in the campaign. Each different area is too long. The 2-minute battles ruins it for me. -Each different area is in the place of a typical action movie and is nice-looking, but gets old sometimes. -Character diversity can be good, but also can be bad. Usually good, though. Most characters aren't too similar to one another, except for the generic action heroes. Cons: -Getting to the end of a level to find you destroyed too much of the environment to continue is unpleasant -Killing enemies is unrewarded - only the demon/devil/red man is required to be killed to win -Game punishes you for getting bros - increases time (albeit time is not that important) -Game punishes you for not getting bros - do not unlock new bros to play as -Friendly AI is pretty bad, though I appreciate the mechanic -few characters require strategy but McGuyver -Same background and each level is indistinguishable from the next - gets boring for me, maybe not others. Areas are too far between from the next. 30 2 minute jungle missions until the urban area felt like a chore. -This game doesn't actually have any jokes aside from "Free, two, one" and the humor of the actual gameplay, and the humor is appreciable but doesn't make me laugh -Because this game wasn't enjoyable for me and I released a negative review, I will probably get a 3% helpful rating -Doing anything crazy is discouraged because you only have 1 HPShow moreShow less

TL;DR: A game that starts off really good, but the later levels and characters drag down the tight gameplay. This is one of those games that I really wish there was a third option between Yes and No. When I first booted it up and played it for an evening, I loved it. The second evening (that's all it took to finish it), it got me unbelievably frustrated. That is basically the juncture for the game. The first half plays out well, the game is fun, and the few drawbacks don't diminish it too much. By the end it is getting onto Kaizo Mario with RNG areas of frustrating. Broforce is a side scrolling action game, reminiscent of Contra and Metal slug for the most part. You have one hit, and enemies will usually go down with one as well. Platforming is a little loose, but you can wall grab (depending on the character), and jump pretty well. The levels contain a wide variety of enemies to blow through, and each new one is introduced in sequence so you can adjust to the layers being added on. The levels themselves are almost fully destructible, barring some ladders and permanent platforms, so the fact that you can shoot through the ground and under/over traps and enemies adds some strategy to the levels. The levels are full of exploding objects, traps, things to drop on enemies and the like. Each level is broken up into different stages in sequence that you have to finish, usually with a boss fight at the end. The key factor in the game are the characters. You start with one, and every so many rescues you unlock a new 'bro' to play as. The rescues also act as lives, but at the same time change your character every time you rescue someone. I will touch on why this becomes problematic later, but suffice to say you will probably play 3-4 different characters per level. The characters are all parodies of various movie characters, usually from the 80s and 90s, but there are some more recent characters in there. Each one has their own unique shooting attack, special items, and sometimes other features (McGuyver has sticky bombs, there are some melee oriented characters, etc). Each does feel rather fleshed out, and a lot of thought was put into making them unique. The cast gets pretty huge later on, and I'll talk about the issues there in a moment. Some of the characters do get unique levels just for them, built around how they play, but these are few and far between, maybe six of those stages for the whole game. There is no story to speak of. You are a team of Bros, who go kill terrorists, then aliens, then demons. If you're angry about a spoiler....seriously? As I said before, the game started out great. During the terrorist part of the game, the controls were tight, the bosses were unique and varied, and the bros I unlocked were interesting to play. Some were less useful than others in certain situations, but I felt I could make do with whoever, and at least make some progress before I died and switched to a different character. The first ten or so characters are clearly the best designed, and while there are some nice ones later on, I feel the game could have stuck with these and been fine. After the terrorist stages come the alien stages. There are still terrorists in some parts of the stages, usually fighting with the aliens, but most of what you are fighting are aliens. In general, they mostly rush and either grab or bite you, with a few dive bombing flyers very rarely. This starts to cause issues. With the terrorists being slow to react and easy to sneak up on or climb above/below, you could always adopt your strategy to whoever you were playing. The aliens don't really have a strategy, and you can't really sneak up on them or rely on them to panic like the terrorists. Things like McGuyvers sticky bombs become useless, as you can't rely on the alien running to its friends...its just going to run to you and kill you, making every time you get him a waste. Other characters have some similar issues, as the game starts to add more and more, and less of them are actually useful to the stage. By this time you'll have unlocked a few melee characters, right around the time the enemies who explode on death you need to be -far- away from, and sometimes the aliens beat you in melee due to no fault of your own. Our bosses start getting less interesting as well, two of them are basically repeats (Giant worm that spits acid, and giant worm that spits acid and shoots rockets), and we start running into issues of bosses with very particular needs that will just screw you if you get the wrong character. In this part of the game, you will repeat a boss quite often, just hoping to get the right character with a special ability you can spam to chew through its health. Its cheap, but they fill the screen with so much scenery chewing garbage its the only winning strategy. On to the hell levels...and this is where the game starts to become absolutely frustrating. Now you're unlocking characters like the girl from Grindhouse (Can only shoot down unless she's ducking and not moving, special only shoots down), 007 (weak gun, four entirely different specials), and Conaan (What the hell is with that wierd 'slight jump and swing' thing?) who basically serve to waste your lives. They do have very situational uses, but with so many characters unlocked, you likely will get them at exactly the wrong time. In addition, with so many very situational and unique characters, you are probably really missing the fact that more of them didn't get special levels to teach you how to play them, or the fact that you can't disable certain really bad ones. We are long past the point where Bruce Willis from Diehard is ever useful, as his gun is short ranged, his stun bombs are useless on bosses and most enemies. Most of the stages now are a mess of explosions, exploding enemies, random traps, pits, and basically a mad rush to get to the next helicopter save point so you don't have to start at the beggining again. Lets not forget the occasional short 'make it all the way to the end of this mess and don't die once' stage, where you will die many times because you didn't get the jumping just perfect...in a game with floaty controls. The bosses are ridiculous, and you are just waiting to get the right characters in order to beat them, not to actually learn their patterns...there is usually just too much stuff going on at once. Also, this part of the game has two more worm bosses, basically the same, one being by itself, another being a pair of them that are even more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. So the review is basically my descent into the game. The start is great and enjoyable, the middle is ok, the end is frustrating and awful. For two evenings of playtime even with all the deaths, I'm not sure its worth full, half, or even humble bundle pricing. Writing the last paragraph reminded me why I got so angry at the game, and I'll have to give it a thumbs down...and remember people, I played on the easiest setting...there's an ironbro campaign where every death kills that character for good, and its game over if you lose all of them. I can't imagine anyone finishing that on normal or hard, especially with the last few stages being ridiculously hard.Show moreShow less

For the amount of time I have had with this game, I did have great fun. But some of the issues you run into this game, especially with the multiplayer (sometimes even local) mode isn't really favorable enough for this game to win a YES in my opinion. The pixelated violence (or should we say, BROMANCE?) itself really appeals, especially with the chaotic fun, the randomized characters, or bros, you slowly unlock and get to play. And until this day, I still have no idea what James Bond's special ability is meant to be. Drink martini, jet pack, laser watch that do minor damage... and a face mask? In short, there is a lot that this game offers. Lots of replay value. Lots of freedom (Murica). And of course, this game is meant to be played with friends, even better if you find yourself smashed -- or just finished watching those manly movies like the Terminator. However, in its current state, there are things that are really not supposed to be in a good and popular game. Especially when a game is definitely marketed towards the idea of a multiplayer co-op gameplay instead of a single-player campaign. 1. The insane amount of lag and freezes the moment you start up a multiplayer with its online mode is devastating. Sometimes before the level starts, other players are loaded in first and gets right into action before you are loaded. So you sort of just 'wake up' to a chaos where you are not even on the screen, or already dead. Other times it just glitch out other characters. This entire experience is made worse by the next issue. 2. Camera. If it's a 2D game, I don't see why is it that you can't just zoom out from your current field of vision to include all bros in the screen. While I much prefer to have each character their own camera (which wouldn't work on a local set up, I know), but at least you should have the bros within the camera view so players know what they are doing and where they are? A 2D platforming game that really nails how the camera works I know is probably BattleBlock Theater. On missions that timing and precision is the key, having a camera that refuses to work is just frustrating. 3. Input delay. I read some of the other reviews here and noticed that this issue has been here before the game was even 'released'. If there's 1-3 second of a delay from inputs on players other than the host on the overworld map, it really shows how horribly compiled the netcode is. 4. Interface. I am not saying that the design of the interface, but rather, their functions. For online mode as a start. Regardless of how many player has joined the 'lobby', if any one of them were to hit ready, the game would proceed to start with only a 3 second count down. To top that off, any player who 'readies' first becomes the player 1 -- which contains some advantages that only further maps out how buggy this game can get. I don't think it's that difficult to assign players to a slot and only have the game starts when everyone is ready. Risk of Rain does that, BattleBlock Theater does that. I don't see this current system as very effective... or rather, even good. If you enter the wrong game room and was dragged into the actual game, trying to quit would lead to the next problem. 5. Some functions just doesn't work. Yes, that's right. I guess your bros just refuses to let you 'drop out' from the game despite the game menu offers you that option. If you hit 'drop out' instead of 'return to menu' when you are in the online game, you will freeze your game. 6. Player 1. Well, player 1 has it okay, but if you are playing multiplayer as player 2/3/4, you are pretty much screwed when you want to run around witih a mech. To put it simply, you have to jump out of your mech from time to time or else the game would register you as AFK (not player 1 though!) and just boot you out from the battle field. So you could be carrying your bros and then suddenly your control is taken away from you and you drag your teammate to hell -- without even having the intention of doing so. This hilarity of a bug even comes with you still able to control the mech if you are marked as AFK, except the camera no longer tilts to you, and you can no longer exit the mech. A game of great fun and potential, with probably unlimited amount of room to grow, with more bros and levels, or even user-create contents, should not be hindered by bad design choices and generally lack of proper ironing on bugs and quality assurances. EDIT: Edited to add some more thoughts and known bugs found from the game.Show moreShow less

Very fun game. Super fun. Makes me realize how much I am tired of early access. I know full well it is early access and do not regret getting it but my buddy and i went through all the online stuff in 20 min. If you are getting into a mind set that I am, where you just want a full game, wait it out. It will be an amazing game eventually.Show moreShow less
