“Want the bleakest, least sanitised WWII campaign the series ever shipped? Pacific ambushes and Eastern Front street fighting pull in opposite directions, and Gary Oldman's Reznov makes the Soviet arc land — yet what people still remember is the zombie bunker that pops up the moment you beat it.”
Our Verdict
The Weird Middle Child Between Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: World at War is a strange one, because it’s stuck between two giants. It came out on November 18, 2008, after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had already dragged the series into the modern era, and right before Modern Warfare 2 turned the whole thing into a cultural explosion. So yeah, on paper, going back to World War II could’ve felt like Treyarch playing it safe.
And sometimes, it does. The look and feel are clearly riding on the Call of Duty 4 engine, and World War II shooters had already been picked clean by that point. The campaign is short, around 6 to 8 hours, and if you’re coming in for some massive reinvention of the shooter, that’s not what this is.
But here’s the thing: World at War didn’t win by being the flashiest one. It won by being nasty. Mean. Uncomfortable. The Pacific missions feel like ambush horror in the jungle, and the Soviet side turns into this brutal revenge march across the Eastern Front. Flamethrowers, dismemberment, executed POWs — this game does not try to make war look cool. For my money, it’s still one of the bleakest, most openly anti-war Call of Duty campaigns ever made.
That’s why an 8.3 out of 10 feels right. Metacritic has it at 83, Steam sits at 92% Very Positive across 45,307 reviews, IGDB has it at 80.0, IGN gave it 9.2, and it sold around 15.7 million. Those numbers make sense. It’s not the cleanest or freshest Call of Duty, but it absolutely left a mark.
Reznov and One Bunker Did More Than Half the Series

The campaign has one massive weapon, and his name is Sergeant Reznov. Gary Oldman goes all in, and Reznov basically carries the Soviet revenge arc on his back. He’s angry, theatrical, terrifying, and weirdly magnetic. By the time you’re pushing into Berlin and raising the flag over the Reichstag, the game has turned from a regular WWII shooter into this grim, operatic revenge story.
And then, after you finish the campaign, World at War pulls the move that makes it irreplaceable. It drops you into Nacht der Untoten, this little bunker map where you board up windows, buy weapons, chase points, gamble on the Mystery Box, and try not to get eaten. That’s it. That’s the seed. One bonus map, almost tossed in like a dessert after the main course, and it accidentally grows into the entire Call of Duty Zombies universe.
That’s the real reason people still talk about this game. Not because the graphics aged beautifully. They didn’t. Not because the multiplayer is still the place to be. It isn’t. It’s because World at War planted two things that kept echoing for years: Reznov, who comes back through the Black Ops side of the series, and Zombies, which became its own beast entirely.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had the more forward-looking engine and the cleaner main dish. World at War borrowed a lot from it. But Modern Warfare didn’t have Nacht der Untoten hiding at the end. World at War did, and that changes the whole conversation.
Buy It for the Campaign, Zombies, and Mods — Not a Busy Lobby

If you’re buying World at War today, be honest about why you’re here. If you want a grim WWII campaign, this is still worth your time. If you want to dig up the origin point of Nazi Zombies, absolutely. If you want the modern Call of Duty multiplayer treadmill, packed official servers, fresh visuals, and slick current-day gunfeel, no. Wrong stop.
The official multiplayer scene is thin now. That’s just reality. This is an old 2008 PC action game from Treyarch and Activision, and the crowd moved on a long time ago. Serious online life today is mostly about the PC community, especially because the game shipped with mod tools. That one decision mattered a lot. Custom Zombies maps kept World at War alive for well over a decade, and for a lot of players, that community-made stuff is the real long tail.
So the best way to play it now is simple: run the single-player campaign, then play Zombies locally or online with friends, then go exploring custom maps on PC. That’s the package. Don’t treat it like a replacement for a newer Call of Duty. Treat it like an archaeological dig with teeth.
And the thing you’re digging up isn’t just an old shooter. It’s the bunker. Nacht der Untoten is the part nobody can really replace. Other Call of Duty games look better, move smoother, and have busier modes. But this is where Zombies crawled out of the dark for the first time.

Remember when Call of Duty wasn't a joke? Pepperidge Farm remembers.Show moreShow less
Lower the price, it's absurd to ask $20 for a game that is now roughly 12 years old (at the time of me writing this) when there are far better substitutes out there, not just in the COD franchise. It is a great game, but honestly people only play it for modded zombies. At least sell just zombies or just multiplayer for $5 a piece or something.Show moreShow less
