Simply the most in-depth military simulation RTS ever made. The attention to detail is astounding, the immersion total and the possibilities endless. Exemple scenario: Your squad is reduced to 6 men barely holding on to a destroyed church. Your bazooka operator is dead, a panzer IV just showed its nose around the corner to the west and 2 squads of fresh infantry are running in the field to the east. In most games you'd be done, but not In this one. You can have a medic throw a smoke grenade on the deceased bazooka operator and send an infantryman to pickup the weapon and ammo on the corpse, shoot the panzer then have 3 others rain AT and AP grenades on it while the crew is shocked, while another soldier grabs the MG42 a dead german left and repositions it in a window overlooking the eastern field, allowing him to wipe out most of the enemy infantry. The window gets blown up by a mortar but this bought enough time for your Sherman and extra squad to show up and clear the rest. You place the tank aiming down the street behind a downed truck and scatter your men around the buildings to catch the counter attack.Show moreShow less
This really hurts, but I just can't put up with it anymore. Don't get me wrong - you can have a lot of fun with this game and it's awesome in some regards. But as it stands now, I can't recommend it. I was hoping that this game would've evolved and fixed a lot of the old issues (from MoWAS 2 for example). Here are some of those issues: - Pathfinding is (still) atrocious. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. You are better off driving the vehicles yourself. I've had squads be killed because their support takes too long doing slow turns on the way. Sure it's nice to have vehicles follow roads, but sometimes you just want them to go directly to an area. To be fair you can actually give them waypoints, but they will still suffer pathfinding issues. - AI is (still) incompetent. They won't do much of anything without you. Soldiers get killed because they won’t return fire on that one enemy soldier shooting at them. - You need to micromanage, which I generally don't mind, but this game takes it to a new level. You sometimes have to order individual soldiers to fire at targets. A whole squad (which costs a lot of resources) can be wiped out by 3-4 enemy soldiers. Even if they are standing right next to them. If you focus on your units on one part of the map, any units that are on another part will be completely destroyed by enemy units. - What happens if a unit runs out of ammo, will the game tell you? Nope. Will the AI soldiers scavenge weapons and ammo? Nope. You have to look for a small flashing icon above the soldier's heads. Also, vehicles/guns that completely run out of ammo will just sit there and be killed. No reaction to enemy fire (such as dismounting, reversing, etc.) - Supply trucks are virtually useless. They are great to begin with, but because of the painfully slow time it takes them to refill makes them a waste of resources. And you'll need a lot of them if you want to keep your units fighting. - Cover and concealment doesn't mean anything. You'd think that a squad in a trench vs. a squad in the open would, most of the time, win. But not in this game. Your infantry squads, even in cover, will be completely wiped by the enemy. Also, soldiers that are in cover will not react to an enemy standing right next to them. Have fun with that. - Machineguns outrange tank cannons. - AI units don't target prioritize. A tank can be firing at enemy infantry even if there's an enemy AT-gun firing at it. - Tanks will turn their turret towards enemy units even if they are far outside the range of its weapons. This means that your hard earned tank might be destroyed by an enemy tank from another direction. You simply cannot force the tank to face its turret where you want it to. - Some units will flat out refuse your orders. Want that artillery gun to fire at a spot on the map? Sometimes it will just refuse your order and fire at something else. - There's a move order and an attack order. The attack order is described as having the unit "fight its way" towards the enemy. That's not how it works, units will charge straight into enemy units and kill themselves. This actually worked as it should in earlier games. - Remember how units that plant satchel charges would run away from them once placed? Not anymore! - Direct (FPS) control of units is a really awesome feature. It's sad that you seldom get the chance to use it because you have to micromanage all the time. Most weapons are also way to inaccurate. - Enemy AI units drop smoke grenades when taking fire. But your own units will not unless you specifically tell them to (i.e. go into a menu and click a button). - Medics will not automatically heal units. Trying to find the specific location to click on a downed soldier is needlessly hard. - Sometimes your guns (AT, mortars, etc.) will get themselves killed on terrain before reaching the destination you've ordered them to. - Units repairing damaged vehicles will sometimes just stop doing it (even if they are not under threat). You have to order them several times. This also happens even if there are repair kits available. - Soldiers digging foxholes will not always go into them once finished. So that's what I can recall off the cuff. Hopefully many of these issues will be resolved in the future, but I won’t hold my breath. I will return to the game once in a while to scratch that itch, but will leave it again because of the infuriating issues. I'm truly saddened by this. I was hoping for a better game. I will of course amend this review once issues are fixed.Show moreShow less
Dear developers, I gave you a positive rating to support you but please for god sake fix this painful fiddly control system and bring this game to the level it could be. I would love to focus on the strategy part of this game but most of the time I'm buisy with working around controls and bugs. To name the most important issues: - fix examining command (inventory does not always open) - increase the hitbox size of wounded soldiers when medic is selected - make wounded soldiers or the symbol more visible (or emphasize by pressing V) - make abondened MGs and Mortars more visible (or emphasize by pressing c) - Automatically select the crew after unload command - Introduce a "drive backwards" command for vehicles - repairing crew should not leave the tank if no repair tools are available. Provide audio feedback. - provide audio feedback when unit cannot execute a command for some reason - provide a sight and shooting cone tool for cannons and units - at least provide stats showing the range of a cannon - provide an option to configure a seperate hotkey for first person and third person view. - use right click only to execute commands. left-click for canceling only. - let infantry face a single direction when right click + drag into cover - give me a chance to select more than one squad at once - provide a comfortable way to quickly select single squad member without destroying the squad organiszation (eg. by pressing tab or shift+tab to switch ) - selecting a single squad member icon should not remove him from the squad (use special hotkey instead) - box-Selecting units should not destroy predefined squads - use hotkey + box-select to reorganize or create new squads - fix the pathing system - give me a chance to hide abondened vehicles/weapons from the mini map - provide more quality of life eg. show a status symbol when tanks are out of ammo or fuel - make AI voice warnings less anoying (Like don't warn every 3 seconds that there is an MG somewhere in the fog of war) - oh yes.. Let me load a save game without showing the campaign video everytime upfrontShow moreShow less
upd. It has been quite some time, some of the bugs were fixed, but essentially, this game is still utter buggy unoptimized trash with broken pathfinding and same adhd glitching soldiers made on a half-broken engine by a bunch of amateur modders from MOWAS2. No matter how much money they pay to youtubers to glaze that trash, it is still a joke of an RTS. ---------------------------- Review from 2022 DO NOT BUY THIS **** Do not even think about it. Don't do it. Don't. I have been with this since BETA, their updates do nothing but add some units and that is it. They still have not fixed gamebreaking bugs and the AWFUL pathfinding back from BETA, they lie on forums and close topics if people complain about the game being a broken mess. https://youtu.be/njG_4Ls9f1A https://youtu.be/7u9DQVxeC4E If you like MOWAS2, THIS GAME IS NOT IT, NOR ITS SUCCESSOR. Hell, they hire clowns as moderators for their forums, who then start spamming jokes instead of maintaining the guidelines. The amount of bugs and broken stuff in this game is so colossal, and yet instead they add new DLC faction while the base game itself is not even half fixed. Your MGs won't shoot if there are wooden little fences in-between them and the enemy infantry, while being perfectly fin if you manually control them to do so. Your infantry won't run away from grenades even if you click to run manually. Developers avoid answering that question, but it is a "confirmed kill" mechanics for grenades, forcing at least one of your soldiers to die if a grenade landed near them. https://youtu.be/A89cfkbqW1w Your STURMTIGER rockets will ricochet from a wooden fence randomly https://youtu.be/7mbYfIV9zgM , your ISU-152 won't be able to kill a single soldier if he is sitting behind a little invincible rock (yep, a lot of "props" on the map are immune to any destruction, so you won't be able to destroy a concrete wall or a pebble, while an AT gunner will sit and kill all of your tanks) https://youtu.be/a3OVzqhiunY https://youtu.be/WP0FuCa92is https://youtu.be/EO-gnIe5L-Y Speaking of AT gunners, the devs decided that it would be awesome if there was a random 25% chance to kill a 1-4 amount of the crew no matter where you hit the vehicle. The problem with it? Well, if an AT gunner scratches even a corner of your armour (even if it protects nothing), then suddenly half of your crew is dead! Cool is not it? When asked about it, the reply was "Don't care, it is a "feature" https://youtu.be/h3RVi3IluUY Same goes about the guns that are mounted atop of trucks. Imagine a huge flak on a truck, perfectly functional an crewed. Guess what, if you hit the side of the truck itself, for example, a sheet of metal above an empty space, where literally NOTHING is located, someone who is crewing the canon will die! Just randomly, cause you know, "feature" and stuff. Even cooler, if you hit this empty and protecting nothing plate again a couple more times, the whole truck will suddenly BLOW UP, and the crew will refuse to use a perfectly working cannon mounted there...because? You'd guessed it! It is another FEATURE. https://youtu.be/2sxM1s8cxAE I once argued with a DEV for a few freaking days about a broken feature of MGs ricochecting from wooden fences, and instead of fixing it, they kept clowning around talking about Rainbow Six Siege, even when I literally recorded MOWAS2 mg42 destroying wooden fences, so I got tired and made a mod that fixes it which literally took like 2-3 lines of code to get back the feature that was present back in MOWAS2! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN-dxTh-F-c REALISM, my ass. Hell, when confronted about this, do you know what the developers said? "Well, we don't have ants crawling in our game, so here goes the realism". Perfect! https://youtu.be/6Q0aCuU-AyE This game does not deserve the attention it is getting, nor it does not deserve YOU and your money. If you decide to buy it anyways, please just check it for an hour and refund it, it is not worth your time and nerves. Do it in skirmish, because conquest mode is you sitting for 40 minutes destroying dumb AI wave after wave. No lies, literally 44-45 minutes per defense mission, you can not edit it, speedup it or change anything to make it go faster, even if it is just your forces obliterating the enemy the moment units spawn. This game is not worth a single dollar. ESPECIALLY since you have to buy the original CTA, which is also an unfinished and abandoned game (conveniently no longer updated after the release of GoH, but developers claim that it has nothing to do with it, of course)Show moreShow less

What is this game? Basically Men of War. If you don't know what that means: you spawn units (infantry, tanks, support equipment) and control them. No base building & resources gathering. What does it add compared to Men of War? - Newer graphics - Third person mode & first person mode (some vehicles) What's single player like? Note: I only played single player a little as it quickly felt repetitive and not fun. You have several campaigns and a 'conquest' mode. They all come down to the same gameplay. You kill the helpless enemies using artillery, tanks and well placed mines while minimising losses. The challenge is fighting off wave after wave or assaulting a superior foe with limited resources. What's multiplayer like? Starting off the lobby system is broken and you will struggle to host or connect with lobbies regardless of your isp, region or pc. Say 1 out of 3 matches end quickly because someone fails loading or lags unbearably. Once in a match you can spawn units based on timers (look up men of war). Infantry, armoured cars and support guns are unlocked first, later tanks and heavy artillery at the end. Often a match snowballs hard and you won't even get to unlock your late game units. MP game modes: - conquest (coop vs ai dynamic campaign) - coop (coop vs ai missions) - battle zones (classical victory points mode) - domination There is no attack/defence mode unlike men of war (one of the reasons you're better off buying that). Battle zones is straight forward, rush to capture points and hold them until your team reaches the required points. Losing units reduces your victory points. If you reach 0, you lose (depending on a setting). If you fail to rush the capture points, you have to attack and capture more. Sometimes this mode snowballs heavily but often the matches are somewhat interesting as there are many (> 5 typically) capture zones spread around the map. This mode tends to end quickly if the team that lost early on doesn't make a big comeback mid game. Domination is in my opinion the best mode. Each team has a HQ sector, lose it and you lose the match. New capture zones are spawned every now and then in a semi-predictable pattern. Capturing these zones gives you extra manpower & victory points. This tends to move the battle around the map to some degree, which is good. The placement of the sectors can be very one sided. If the first few sectors spawn in territory you already control, you get extra manpower & victory points basically for free. This causes snowballing. Performance: Straight up terrible. No point lying here. The game looks good compared to men of war but it requires 7-17GB of ram runtime. Whenever 1 person lags in a match, the entire game becomes a slide show. I'm not sure if the devs simply didn't optimise it or if the engine is crap but the result is clearly terrible. Also players frequently suffer from lag spikes of whole seconds despite their internet working fine. I believe that is an issue with the game itself. An issue I did not experience in Men of War. The balance: The balance between factions and doctrines has shifted drastically several times. I think that overall it's not bad. It's neither Wehraboo heaven nor Soviet propaganda movie. Sadly the game suffers heavily from pay to win DLCs. Most DLCs add a new faction & new doctrines to the old faction (alongside maps & missions). To get people to buy the DLC, the new faction & doctrines are intentionally made more powerful than the existing factions & doctrines. This is called powercreep. By the time the next DLC comes out, the devs will/have nerfed the previous DLC to be about balanced. So what about the gameplay itself? You can order your units to move, fire, attack, etc, let them fire at will or directly control them. The difference between these is sadly massive. The units AI retarded (more on that below). This means that direct control or constant ordering is the only viable way to play. You don't have the resources (unless you play custom/test mode) to trust the unit AI. Infantry combat boils down to grenades + (s)MGs + snipers (+ support guns). Tank combat supposedly is deterministic and realistic, but ends up pretty random as hit chance is random. If you aim the right spots with the right gun, tank combat is 1 hit kill. Note you can only hit these weakspots (somewhat) reliably if you use direct control. As you are constantly required to micro units, you tend to play with 2 dozen infantrymen 1-2 tanks and some support guns. This hurts the setting of ww2, the largest scale war ever... Also the micro makes the game stressful instead relaxing. And so it fails to be a proper game, it's more of a chore. What's so bad about the unit AI? - Infantry will lie down and cower behind cover and not fire. You can workaround this by putting them in the open and ordering them to lie down. If you like using cover to gain tactical advantage, I sadly have to recommend Company of Heroes over this. - Vehicle path finding is terrible. Vehicles prefer to drive over roads (makes sense) except the roads almost always go through the center of the map where the enemy can easily hit you. To work around this you have to double right click (be sure to check the path preview) or manually drive (let's you go faster also). - Units love to pick their own targets, often preferring to kill a harmless infantrymen vs an enemy tank or support gun. - Infantry turns to face the direction of combat. Makes sense, you may think. Except they never turn back to face the way you want them to face. This makes keeping vision on an area micro intensive as you have to tell every infantrymen personally to face a certain direction. He will look away the moment he senses combat somewhere. - Vehicles love turning on the spot instead of driving in an arc. This makes them slow and exposes their weak spots. - Infantry does not use grenades or AT rockets automatically most of the time. Very rarely they do. It's so rare, you can't rely on it. Other issues: - Infrequent crashes to desktop. - Poor map design with a lot of tiny height differences that are hard to spot. You can find them if you go first person mode or tilt your camera to the ground. - Units have dementia and forget where the enemy is despite aiming at it. This is not so much an issue with artillery duels but mostly with tank combat. - There are bombing runs you can call in but they are laughably easy to dodge by just stepping aside or towing a gun and driving away. Only useful vs vehicles with broken tracks or the karl gerat. Summary: Buy Men of War (any version) if you like to micro. It's cheaper and you won't miss anything. If you want better unit AI and cover to matter, buy Company of Heroes (+ mods). Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront suffers from excessive focus on micro, snowballing, pay to win, old engine, terrible unit AI, terrible networking code and performance issues. The best advice for the devs is just build a new engine and fundamentally fix issues or just make Men of War mods.Show moreShow less

*UPDATE 3*: 09/28/22: TEST TO SEE IF STEAM WILL LET ME UPDATE: UPDATE TO FOLLOW IF IT DOES. Oh boy. Steam will finally allow me to update my reviews?! What an outstanding development! Time to rip this garbage-tier development team a new rear end, yet again. Full disclosure: I purchased their first DLC. I MIGHT purchase their second. However, I THOROUGHLY discourage anyone whom has not purchased this game as of yet to support this developer, as they care more about making money than making a viable, playable product. Multiplayer remains a complete and utter mess, even a YEAR later. If you have friends overseas, and you're used to playing games RTS games like Company of Heroes together, be prepared to have an utterly disappointing time with this game if your internet is anything but stellar fiber! You will fall behind your friends in the game, to the point that your commands will take 5 minutes to actually transmit to your troops, when you needed them to have occurred about 4 minutes 59 seconds ago. Speaking of commands falling through, hows about just commanding your troops to fire upon a Finnish soldier slowly crawling their way through the bushes towards your (17) men whom are all busily facing the opposite direction because there was a brief skirmish on the opposite end of the line? Well I hope you thoroughly enjoy the sight of your men being picked off one-by-one by elite Finnish Sharpshooters whom will sit approximately 5 feet outside of your lines, casually blowing each of your soldiers brains against the back wall of their dug-outs with 100% accurate shots, because your men do not understand the concept of "Rotate 180 degrees and aim your rifle at the enemy firing upon you." They have yet to add an ability to tell your men to HOLD THEIR CURRENT FACING, so your ENTIRE DEFENSIVE (or offensive) line will turn and stare in awe at the direction they heard a SINGLE rifle shot echo from, while a squad of SMG and grenade armed troops slowly advance upon their position to obliterate them. Good job! Speaking of the absolute failure of an AI: Pathfinding. I read a review in which someone mentioned that there are "some" pathfinding errors on "a couple" maps. I don't even know if you can call what the AI in this game does "Pathfinding." They do not, indeed, find a path. They blindly stumble forward, slamming face first into each and every obstacle they can. These obstacles can, and will, include your own vehicles, men, trees, houses, burnt-out vehicle wrecks, incoming enemy shells, bullets, and every mine they can possibly bring themselves to step upon whilst vaguely "following" the line of travel drawn on the minimap. I have probably lost more money in Conquest to my own mens' efforts to kill themselves and each other than through enemy action. That's saying something. Telling your artillery to fire, just to have them shoot the back of your King Tiger at a near flat trajectory is truly something to behold, particularly when said Tiger explodes magnificently. I know your Art Team, your Sound Team, etc. can be working on DLC products while your main coding team can be doing bug fixing.. but I'm 99% sure you aren't devoting the entirety of your efforts into making this game better. You're busily attempting to shill out the next DLC to rob your customers blind, whilst still leaving this broken excuse of an AI in your game. I have said this before, and I will say it again: YOU. NEED. TO. DEVOTE. YOUR. EFFORTS. TO. BUG. FIXING. No more content, no more DLC. Rework the entirety of your AI. It has failed. Or, should I say, actually attempt to make your own AI, rather than stealing it from other games? Will update once they patch AI CAS Call-ins *UPDATE 2*: 07/03/21; I have exclusively played the Conquest game mode, as I have absolutely 0 interest in any other aspect of this game. If this is your forte, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BUY THIS GAME, until they fix the abundance of AI issues this game has plaguing it. Even if you're not interested in comp-stomping, don't buy it regardless, because, instead of actually making a working game, these developers decided to shove out an alpha build, and instead of working on fixes, are already working on DLC for this broken mess of a game. In regards to my update 1; I have been completely unable to test this adjustment to AI CAS call-ins, because, in the three days I have been playing, they have not called in a single airstrike since this update. It appears their "fix" was to remove it entirely, instead of fixing their garbage tier AA weapon system AI? (I am playing on "Hardcore" difficulty). As others have mentioned, there is absolutely no target priority system in this game. Or, perhaps, there is, and it is COMPLETELY. ASS. BACKWARDS. Every single weapon will prioritize infantry. But not the highest threat infantry. Oh no. They'll aim for o'll joe schmoe, hiding behind his favorite fallen tree, flipping through his favorite Russian Playboy magazine, his broken Mosin Nagant negligently laying a full 20 meters from his worthless, spineless self, and waste a full 30 seconds firing, and missing, with HE shells at him, before one of your much more competent infantry manages to kill the poor bastard in their first shot. What prompted me to write this second update was the following scenario; I started my first Russian Conquest, and, as everything was going smoothly my first two missions, of course, the AI (MY AI) felt the need to add some extra challenge to my life. To facilitate this, they felt compelled to give themselves a frontal lobotomy, My worthless troglodyte T-28 M1937 came upon a MG34 tripod hiding, VERY CONSPICUOUSLY, behind some loose shrubbery. I ordered this drooling moron to fire an HE shell at these two men, whom, moments before, gunned down one of my guard's infantry men. This utterly moronic tank aimed at the men, with it's main cannon, both of it's machinegun turrets.... and did not fire a singular shot. I was forced to take control of it, and upon destroying the shrubbery in front of the offending MG34... I released control of the tank, to see if the moronic gunner would happen to use his good o'll Mk. I eyeball to SEE THE ENEMY IN FRONT OF HIM. Lo and behold, as the men picked themselves up and dusted off their uniforms, my mentally incapacitated tank operators still could not acquire their designated target, necessitating myself to take command once more to solve this issue permanently. By blowing my tank up with the included satchel charge, thus relieving myself of the pressure building up in my skull from the absolute fury, quickly threatening to culminate in an aneurysm. DEVELOPERS: DO NOT PROGRESS ANY FURTHER IN ANY DLC YOU ARE MAKING FOR THIS GAME. YOU HAVE RELEASED AN ALPHA PRODUCT, AND YOU HAVE YEARS OF WORK AHEAD OF YOU TO MAKE THIS EVEN SEMI-FUNCTIONAL. You should be ashamed of yourselves for even daring to charge $20 for this game. *UPDATE 1*: They've listened to the FREQUENTLY mentioned complaint about the bombers, and have adjusted it to be "easier to evade." I've yet to test this "adjustment," because, despite being mod developers in the past, and complaining about updates breaking their mod frequently, their update broke almost every mod. =) Will update once I have the opportunity to be nuked repeatedly.Show moreShow less

the game isn't bad, nor is it of poor quality. it has heart, soul, and dedication poured into it. the AI is unbelievably, inexcusably, perpetually mega-retarded. absolutely absurd levels of comedic slowness present within the husk bodies of every individual slime sucking soldier on any side absolutely no AI checks for any common sense tactics, movements, actions, reactions, or really anything they will run into gunfire without returning it, they will refuse to shoot at enemies they can see, they will stand completely still and ignore orders, vehicles will do 95 point turns despite you ordering them to move in a straight line they're ungodly levels of apathetic and straight up dumb in every possible way, they're infuriating to handle or deal with, and require literally constant supervision to have any effectiveness without extreme amounts of skill and luck the learning curve is like a cliff with a dude hanging from the top by his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ neck, only because the AI actively works against your attempts to use proper tactics combine this truly fascinating lack of intelligence with the squishiest healthbars i've ever seen and you've got a sopping mess that you can't help but eat, and hate the entire time someone for the love of god, teach these people some more advanced AI, i would willingly chop off a finger for them to have an IQ above the room temp in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arctic here's an edit for the majority of people who cannot think ahead and who didn't fully read what I said: The AI is dumb, it impacts even veteran players, and I witness it every game I play with my friends. The skill required to overcome the pure, unfiltered stupid that flows in the veins of every AI unit is absurd, and it REQUIRES this skill and micromanaging to make them any amount of effective. Orders will be ignored, even if you're good at this game. Squads will be wiped out even if you understand positioning to a T and are god-like at this game. They'll do 95 point turns in a field with and without the reverse gear. Politely, if you think this is a skill issue, shove it. The AI is busted. Just because my hours on this game are low doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. Every Call To Arms is the same engine, and functions the same god-forsaken way, and I've played 3 of them now. You're not funny for calling out a skill issue, and telling me I'm bad at a game I'm bad at and don't like won't change my opinion or make you suddenly right about the AI not being abysmal.Show moreShow less
