For someone who actually works in the automotive technician field I kind of felt weird buying Mechanic Simulator 2018. I guess it would be like a farmer buying Farming Simulator and expecting to experience real farming. I knew there was no way for them to bring a completely accurate representation of being a true mechanic but I thought I would take a chance and see how far their “simulation” gets anyway. Starting out with the graphics, I actually was pretty surprised how much they included in the environment. Each shop is pretty detailed with its own tools and “stations” for you to get things done. While there are some obvious short-cuts, like having vehicles magically move from one position to another, they don’t really detract from the overall experience. Vehicles are fairly detailed but have also been simplified to prevent the game from being overly mundane. A good example of this is the fact that, on one car I was working on, you could remove an engine head with the extraction of 6 bolts and 4 injectors, and then simply slide out the camshafts. If it was that easy in real life I’d make a fortune on head rebuilds, haha! There were a couple things about the game that somewhat broke immersion and I wished there was a little more thought put into it. The first thing was the simplistic part listings. It’s nowhere near that easy in real life. Most times you have to do some referencing to get a part number before you even think about going to a “store” to buy it. Secondly, the diagnosing of vehicles was almost non-existent in this game. When a vehicle came into the shop there wasn’t a customer complaint, there was an actual outline of what was wrong with the vehicle. Vehicle has bad brakes. Vehicle has bad timing components. This is totally unrealistic, as most times the customer has absolutely no clue what’s wrong with their vehicle. A good part of a mechanics job is taking a vague complaint, like maybe a weird vibration when the brakes are applied, and then determining from that what the actual problem is. Maybe it’s bad brake pads. Maybe the rotor is out of round. Maybe the caliper sliders are seized. You never know until you get in there and do the work. The customer might not even point you in the right direction. I can’t even count how many times the customer said something was wrong with their vehicle and I find the actual problem isn’t even close to what they thought it was. Vehicle was running rough and customer told me they just had the o2 sensor replaced. I found the problem was a disconnected vacuum hose on the top of the engine, had nothing to do with the o2 sensor. The most important thing I found missing from this game was the realism in dismantling vehicles. I’m not talking about how you only need to remove 6 bolts to take off an engine header. I’m talking about how every bolt just slips nicely out of its hole like it was just installed yesterday with 2 pounds of anti-seize. There was so much that could have been done in this area. Seized bolts that required heating or drilling. Broken bolts that required an extraction mini-game maybe? You know, SOMETHING to show that taking apart vehicles isn’t all sugar and spice. How about torquing components back onto the vehicle while you’re at it? That’s a HUGE part of a mechanics job and there wasn’t a torque bar to be seen anywhere in this game. This is where this game takes a huge hit in my opinion. The designers just didn’t get it. It’s not simply about taking parts off and tossing them back on again… So what’s it about? It’s about the challenge. The challenge of getting a vehicle you know nothing about, sluthing out what’s wrong with it. The challenge of running into a seized component and still getting the bugger apart. The challenge of taking something that was falling apart and through struggle and strife making it like-new again. Taking pride in your accomplishment. Knowing the battle was hard fought, but in the end you were victorious! THAT’s what being a mechanic is all about. At any rate… What it comes down to is the question, is this an accurate depiction of what it’s like to be a mechanic? Well… No, it’s not. That said, I can’t fault the developers too harshly for that. People aren’t buying this so they can see what the mechanic life is like before they decide to become one. They aren’t buying it to train themselves in rebuilding cars. People are buying this for entertainment. This is a game based on being a mechanic, and for that it does very well indeed. So what’s the verdict? Well, at present the game currently retails on Steam for about $22 and at that price it’s a good buy. Where I find a problem is when you start to add in and calculate the available DLC for the game. Most of the DLC for this game averages between $5.50 and $6.50, and for that price you unlock very specific content. For example, the Dodge DLC only gives you the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger with OEM parts and no “muscle car” options, making the DLC seem like it should have been included with the base game. In fact, a lot of the DLC feels this way. Personally I would have liked to seen all the DLC included in the base game and perhaps the retail price then set around $40. Having the DLC options with this game is more of a black mark on the game than an actual advantage. Perhaps Red Dot will consider that with their next title. Anyway, the verdict… Well, this game is certainly a niche title, but don’t let that stop you. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had here even with the base game and no DLC. At a cost of $22 it’s pretty fair and I’d say go for it. My only warning is to stay away from the DLC unless you absolutely know what you’re getting into. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMON QUESTIONS - You asked, I answer... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Is this a good game to learn about cars?" In all honesty, yes it would be. That said, it’s not going to teach you what you need to know to work on your own cars. It will show you the basic parts of a vehicle, where they’re located, and how they go together. The level of detail is fairly good but there’s a lot of unrealistic short cuts and some need to know knowledge (ex. Proper torque procedures) that aren't covered. This game is good if you’re looking to just learn the basics of a vehicle and how they’re put together. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For more no-nonsense reviews check out my curator page at; https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45052020/Show moreShow less
I don't normally leave reviews but having been enticed by the overall rating of this game I think it needs knocking down a peg. Have played 17 hours at review time so should be long enough to make a judgement: Worth pointing out, I know a lot about cars and have taken a few cars apart and reassembled and modified them IRL, with some garage mechanic experience too. The good: -The house music radio station is banging -Probably teaches you about cars if you know literally zero The bad: -Core game is wildly unrealistic in almost every way I can think of: *Part prices are way off *Many orders are nonsensical - rusty BoS comes in with 200k miles on the clock wanting a full engine, gearbox and suspension rebuild costing 10x what the car is worth *Minimal to no electronics - no wiring looms, plugs etc despite this being an ever bigger part of modern cars. Why is the ABS module the only module - where are all the CPUs - engine management one being most obvious? Many garage jobs involve changing sensors - there are none in this game. *No way you would put a car on a track and be able to work out which bush or brake component isnt working *Despite worn parts showing as rusty, rust does not seem to impact disassembly. Having spent 4 hour trying to remove 2 of the part they call the outer tie rod on a 16 year old car, in game this is overlooked. Equally you can have a part that's new out the box or nearly new that's faulty but not here *Bolts, tools and the general assembly of cars is very minimal but thats pretty much all you deal with when working on cars for real. 3 toolboxes in this garage and not a spanner in sight. Working out which tool is best to use to reach an unreachable bolt is usually half the challenge -Struggling to see the point - race track but no racing, test track not customisable for different tests. You can restore a car but to what end? No place to use it. -Driving physics are weird af. Healthy cars have such bizarre handling and as for damaged cars - If I have 'sway bar links' with 1% health with springs and shocks that need replacing, shouldn't my car wallow like a boat in a storm? -As a brit the part names do my head in. Anti-Roll Bar, Wing (body panel), Bonnet. English language option would be nice! -Sub categories are a mess. Air filter should be under 'intake' the exhaust manifold should be under exhaust', clutch is not part of the gearbox so should be called drivetrain as should drive shafts which they call suspension, orders mention 'running gear' - wtf is running gear? Do I find it next to the yoga leggings? -Repairs - parts that can be repaired IRL cannot in game and vice versa -Engine oil just falls out the car when I ask it to and all cars get filled up with the same stuff. What happened to gearbox oil, bleeding the brakes, where is the air con system for that matter? -No engine or gearbox mounts. Gearbox just comes off in game but a gearbox is really heavy and you always use a stand, lift or jack to assist you -Engine either runs or doesn't - since when? Blown headgasket, misfire, timing is off, damaged piston crown are all times when the engine runs just not well. Probably loads of other things I've noticed and not mentioned. Overall the gameplay is quite boring, very grindy and repetitive, I would rate it's realism at 30% or less. As a simulator it's rubbish, and it's not much fun as a game with objectives or achievements. I don't get it, and nor should you.Show moreShow less

I really wish steam had a netural review button, because this game left me torn. The game play is solid, and the cars look beautiful, but the grind man, there is just so much of it. For example if you want to unlock the paint shop you have to unlock over 30 levels to do it. You also cannot "swap" engines as you think you would but more on that in a bit but the biggest gripe for me is the developers. DO NOT go on to the steam forums with a question or a omment or an IMMEDIATE ban will be threatned by the devs. I was shocked when someone asked if you could swap a V8 engine for one that is supercharged, not only to be told no, but when someone offered a work around using the company'S OWN EDITOR, that person and the person posting the question was threatned with a banning. These are not people asking how to crack the game, or how to edit lines of code, these are players asking for a feature that has been with us since CMS15 only to be told no and then threatned with a banning. The fact that the developer would do this after all the bugs and garbage we had to deal with at launch, to treat us this way, makes me suspect all they really wanted was our hard earned money. I have seen people post guides that are stickied in THEIR OWN FORUM only to be threatned with banishment. Look, if you want to look at pretty cars and rebuild them all while grinding and being threated with being banished from the town square then by all means grab a copy and have a great time. If that doesnt appeal to you than I would recommend spending your money on something else and not supporting Play Way in any way, shape, or form.Show moreShow less
*REVIEW ADJUSTED* I don't want to give this a bad review due to there always being slight issues on first launch, plus i have faith in this game getting issues fixed quickly and becoming the game we have been waiting for, for so long. Some may be thinking, Hey it's the 21st century and games shouldnt be having issues on release day by now but ♥♥♥♥♥ happens what can you do about it? So glad that this is finally out, But.... there is always a but unfortuntely when games first release. I must say the game looks absolutely supurb on ultra settings but i also must say it has some minor bugs currently stopping me from finishing some jobs like not accepting that i have drained and refilled the oil and also not letting me put the brake calipers back on. From the get go i had a few black screens trying to launch the game where i could not do anything resulting in Alt+F4's and then when i did finally get in to the tutorial part of the game, it freezes whenever i discover something new or when i pop the hood of the mint condition car and then try to get out of it i am met with another black screen resulting in another force close. hopefully a quick patch fixes this becuase i am so dam keen!! Will adjust my review when i can put some decent play time in upon fixes *EDIT* Ok so after getting through the tutorial and into my own garage the game is running way better and looking supurb on ultra settings. Not sure why there was such a problem with the tutorial and it's optimisation I ended up just going straight for a test drive to finish the tutorial which seemed to work fine so i suggest people try that. But i also do suggest not buying it currently if you are one that takes new release bugs to heart and jumps up and down in a fit, if you are patient and dont mind playing how it is now, sure grab it. Hope this helpsShow moreShow less
Quick and effective review I do not recommend it as it is now, since its extremley unoptimized. I have a GTX 980Ti i7 6700k 4.20Ghz 16GB RAM And I get very low FPS on Ultra and High (20.- 40 fps) Also Mouse acceleration that cannot be turned off Kind of blurry graphics overall And let me tell you, that is almost the worst, PlayWay has not finished this game since when a few specific cars get into the garage, the whole screen becomes black and you cannot do ANYTHING except Alt+F4 BUT, to be honest I still am looking forward very much when all the issues is gone, and I am very sure that I will change this to recommended review after the FPS issues is gone, and a few minor fixes/bugfixing is made Even more as more game time is spent, A few hours into the game and gained some levels, starting up the game all the progress was just GONE. I HAVE REFUNDED THE GAME. MY REVIEW WILL NOT BE UPDATED, TAKE WITH CAUTIONShow moreShow less
Long time fan of the series here. Pretty much every initial release had bugs and optimization issues. If you are patient (very rare with typical whiny gamers these days) then you will be rewarded with a perfectly fine game after some patching. I haven't encountered any major bugs, or even minor ones so far. The only thing I would gripe about is some interface and control decisions that were made, but I'm sure they'll work on that soon. Performance is fine on my 1080ti at 1440p. Go ahead and click the "no" button below to let out that anguish.Show moreShow less
What a letdown... Okay so I have to first say I loved the two previous installments of car mechanic simulator. This one is a major letdown. I had promised I wouldn't take the 1 week delay into account, but considering the rest of the game, I feel like I don't have a choice... Let's start with the pros: Graphics Graphics in this game are absolutely gorgeous. CMS15 was already pretty nice, but they overdid themselves with the graphics on this one. I'll give it a solid 9/10 for the graphics Car Variety I don't know how many cars were in the other two games, I never really looked at the whole list, but I felt like I'd always see the same cars. I haven't seen all the cars from CMS18 yet, but already I feel like the selection is way nicer. The only thing I would have hoped is to have real cars instead of cars looking similar to real life cars. I know there are some, but it's not the majority of cars that are real cars. I guess it's a matter of getting the rights from the manufacturers, and it's not the game's fault, but still. I'll give it a 8/10 on car selection. now here are the cons: gameplay While the gameplay is similar to the previous version of the game, the pie chart menu is horrible. It makes everything so much slower, and breaks the pace of the game in my opinion. I do think some options make sense to be in there, but I just don't like the way it's been implemented as a whole Also, when it comes to options... this game has none. It has basic graphics options, and volume options. That it. No way to turn on the hardcore mode (or whatever it was called) from CMS15, so that you don't always see what parts prevent you from removing a part, which makes the game too arcady in my opinion. Other than that, it's of course similar to CMS15. I'll give this one a 5/10 simply because I feel like this should be an upgrade from the previous one, not a downgrade. It isn't all that bad, but it shoulda been a upgrade, and it's not. now for the fun part... Game Stability / bugs I'll just start with the score. This is a 0/10. Literally. First car I've worked on I managed not to have problems with. Then I take a second order... move the car to the lift... lift the car... and poof. the car disappears. It's just gone... Now out of luck, I didn't have time to spend money on it before it disappeared because that would of made me FURIOUS. So I take another order... complete it. Fine. another one, and right after I was done with it... black screen. The game was still working, I could hear my steps and the pie menu opening and closing... so I tried to remember where was the save functions from it... Somehow I though it was the bottom option, then the upper-right uption. Sadly, it was the top option, not the upper-right. Turned out I was a bit too much on the right and I loaded a save from the very beginning. Loosing 3-4 cars worth of work. I was furious. but no matter, started working on some more cars... and at dome point, game crashed. lel. Some other bugs I encountered, when you try to sort stuff in the inventory, the menu has orange text on orange background... wtf. When you miss parts on a car when trying to complete the order, it says you are missing part {0}. Seriously guys. Have you even tested your game??? congratulations, you have displayed the index of the part from it's collection. I mean that is just basic stuff... I mean the game was supposed to be out a week ago. TWO HOURS before it came out, it was delayed for a week. And then when it came out a week later, the game has more bugs than features. The game came out yesterday, and the bug reporting thread has currently over 3000 messages. Yes, THREE THOUSANDS messages. in less than 24 hours. You'd thing they would have used that week to re-test everything and stabilize the game... I guess they used that week to play with their weinners instead. And that is not talking about the HORRIBLE email support of the company, with that super rude guy that cannot even talk english properly. So yeah. Very unhappy with the new CMS18. I'll give it an overall score of 5/10, thanks to the nice graphics. If it weren't for those, I would have given it a 3/10 maximum. I'm sure they'll fix the bugs eventually, but this is just completely unprofesionnal... You will encounter bugs by playing normally within 2-3 minutes. How did the QA department let that pass? It is beyond me. I'm programmer in real life, and if I ever deliver something that buggy, I loose my job. Just saying...Show moreShow less
This game shouldnt have shipped the way it did, lets be honest, but it did. I played it, realised it was buggy as hell and then stopped, figuring i'd leave it a few days and see if a patch was brought out by that time. I came back and not one patch but 4 were released in such a small space of time. Kudos to the developers for the quick patches. I'm very disappointed that people decided to slate the game itself and put horrendous reviews of the game based on just the bugs at day one. You are all entitled to put reviews like that but the reviews stick, the developers should have known this, but months down the line when it's streamlined and bug free those reviews will still be there and it's slightly unfair, especially given the amount of patches in the few days its been. Personally I feel that this game (after the bug fixes) has improved massively on the last one and while it's true that it can get to feel very samey its a bloody simulator, dont see you moaning about the fact you have to drive from A to B on Euro Trucks now do I? That's the same all through the game. It's added new steps into repairing your car, new tools to use to make this happen and, my favourite, a barn find which you can pick up old classics and restore them to their full glory! There's a skill system that's much better than previous games. Whilst things can still improve with the game over time, i'm more than happy at picking this little gem up for just £14, that#'s nothing for a game nowadays and I feel people forget the amount of hours you can get from this type of game and for what it costs you per hour of gameplay you paid for it. I've only played 4 hours at the moment, that's £3.50 per hour of enjoyment...I'm about to play many more, great value for money!Show moreShow less
YOU WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT CARS OR REPAIRING THEM. It's just removing parts, and replacing with a new part. There are no leaks to repair, no sensor failures or fuse blowouts to diagnose. The game has completely left out important stuff like A/C systems, sensors, wiring, tubes and hoses. Worse yet, they won't even tell you what is the purpose of each components of the car. So no, you will not learn anything about cars with this game. Game play is boring too. It's just doing the same thing over and over and over and over ...... And then there's the bug that makes you replace everything with brand new parts, otherwise it won't get marked as completed. You are better off learning through YouTube and working on a real car.Show moreShow less
