“Reverse-horror pixel action where fluid tentacle physics and biomass consumption power a four-hour campaign bogged down by repetitive switch puzzles.”
Our Verdict
Red Monster is a technically impressive but design-wise disappointing game. I've rarely seen pixel art games with procedural animation done this well, but that's not enough to carry a four-hour playthrough.
Its biggest problem is not knowing what it wants to be. Want to be an action game? The combat system is too shallow. Want to be a puzzle game? The puzzles are just switches. Want to be a Metroidvania? Not enough content. What you end up with is a half-baked product that touches on everything but goes deep into nothing.
If you're particularly interested in procedural animation or biomass aesthetics, you could wait for it to drop below 20 yuan. But if you're expecting a complete Metroidvania experience, this game will disappoint you. It has good ideas, but lacks the execution to turn those ideas into a good game.
Four hours, nothing to savor after completion. That's all there is to Red Monster.
