This experience really sucked for me, but it didn't start out that way. Actually, playing the game through for the first time was an awesome experience. The game controls really well, art style is fantastic, and humor is pretty well done. I don't particularly like poop jokes as I feel like it's cheap humor but this game made me literally LOL over some of these hilarious moments, particularly the one's going on in the background. Just such a charming game for a beat-em-up. The problems began with the whole reason I bought the game in the first place. The online multiplayer. There is this horrible input delay that happens in every single session I've tried to join. My friends and I had to resort to local play which is fine but... not why I bought it. I combed through the forums to solve this issue and found that most people recommended that we all lower our settings, but this never worked. Also-- why should I lower my settings just to use the online feature? Just makes no sense to me. Anyway it gets worse... So most of the time I had to play this game solo, which is fine because as I stated earlier the game was a blast during my first initial play through so no problems there, but after that? Oh boy... So you unlock characters every time you beat the game. I actually loved the idea of this until I realized that the characters more or less function the same. Different magic attacks sure, but controls, combos and everything are all the same. As a matter of fact they felt a lot less like characters and more like character "skins". Okay that's fine, but why on God's green earth do I have to level up each character "skin" individually? And there's 25 CHARACTERS "SKINS" to unlock too, and the only way to unlock most of them is to beat the game MULTIPLE TIMES!!! Anyway so I'm a Completionist, this is what I do. So I end up just completing the game a thousand times to unlock them all. Super. Duper. Boring. Experience. My God. So now I've finally unlocked them all and I'm ready to get the last couple of characters in intense mode. Oh boy... So in intense mode the devs basically double damage and HP for all mobs and bosses and call it a day. Great right? Sounds like a decent enough challenge to me. However at this point the game goes from being a beat-em-up and now turns into a juggling simulator. You now must unlearn everything you've learned in order to master this ridiculous new juggling technique cause its basically the only way you're getting through intense mode, and I do mean... THE ONLY WAY. The game never prepares you for this by the way, never teaches you about the technique or anything. You learn by basically getting your ass hammered in so bad that you go online to seek a solution to the problem. So literally you are jumping into the air, smacking a goon and pressing XXYY CONSTANTLY, juggling them until they die. I know I make that sound easy but it really, really isn't. The problem is that mobs have SO MUCH HP that you will be inputting this command a million times per stage, also counting all the times you die trying. So more like a billion. This literally killed the game for me completely. I do not get angry at video games. I lose, I go home, I come back for more later. It's simple. This is the first time I actually got legit enraged over playing a game like this, and its not even like I'm a stranger to doing this kind of thing. I got double S Rank in my DMC 3 days so this is nothing new to me, but the difference between DMC3 and this game is that DMC3 was actually a fun system where you're constantly switching attacks and abilities to rack up a mean combo. Very, very fun. This? You're doing the same ♥♥♥♥ over and over and over and OVER again till ad nauseam. So I finally, FINALLY play through this ridiculous juggling game up to the point of getting the final character "skin". I remember unlocking that "skin" after all the work I put in and it didn't feel good at all. I didn't feel overwhelmed with relief or have that sense of accomplishment I felt in most games with steep challenges. I just felt meh. I then had a decision to make. I'm at the end now. I can continue juggling my way through to the end boss and beat it or I could walk away from this game forever. So I looked up what you get once you beat intense mode. No achievements, No extra character "skins", just an icon on your character selection screen changing to a different color. Wow. Just wow. Needless to say, I chose the latter. I reflected on my experience and a lot of the time and work I put into this game and realized it wasn't worth it. None of it. My hands were killing me, I swear I'll need glasses after staring at the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ screen so long watching my character juggle away and it was all just not worth it. I walked away from this game with the one feeling you never want to feel after completing a game. Regret. I wish I hadn't gone down the rabbit hole of this game. I actually loved the first experience so much I committed to buying the rest of the developer's game roster, but this game left such a sour taste in my mouth that I don't think I'll be going down another road with them. Perhaps I would after extensive research and pooling over hundreds of reviews. Maybe... but this experience sucked so much that I doubt it. If you are a casual player and mean to only turn this on if you have some friends over that's fine. I'm sure you'll have a blast. Anything multiplayer is a blast. Other than that I just don't recommend you go down this rabbit hole like I did. If you want a little bit more of a visual representation of my experience then go on YouTube and check out the intense mode play throughs of this game. If you see that and think that it's your cup of tea then go for it. Otherwise if you are anyone else and ESPECIALLY if you are a completionist like myself. Avoid this game. It's just not worth it.Show moreShow less

To make a long story short? This game does not provide anything valuable in terms of game-mechanics or replayability (more about that later), especially if you are playing it by yourself. It is abundantly clear that the game was never meant to provide any fluent entertainment, and only rides on basic gratification-strategies to fuel your continuous patronage, like CandyCrush or FarmVille. Yeah, I said it. If you're prudent enough to look at the amount of hours I put into the game, you can roughly guess that I did not "hate" the game. I merely think it is not only unexceptional, it is merely horribly mediocre. I finished the game once with some friends, and did not think of it too much. From there, whenever I wanted something completely dull to occupy my hands as I listened to some podcasts, I logged into Caslte Crashers. If you like cheap-grinding strategies, which were not even implemented correctly, by all means -- go ahead and purchase the game. Otherwise? Well, Gameplay The most flabbergasting part of Castle Crashers, is that the combat-mechanics are utterly uninspiring to the point you cannot even tell how the players are any different than the fodder-enemies which you defeat. That means slaying enemies is not fun and it mostly rewards you nothing: You feel so blatantly powerless, common, non-special -- you'll find yourself time and time again defeating enemies by blindly wailing your attack button at them as if you're playing Cookie Clicker, seeing as the main attraction in the game is to "Level Up", "Collect Items" and "Collect Coins", for no other reason than to just do it. Castle Crashers not only advocates senseless grinding, it relishes in it. But unlike, say, ZHP, Patapon, Disgaea...Heck, even Skyrim -- the substantial reason for grinding is mostly vacant, there is simply very little to no reason to focus on "collecting everything", There's no reason to be sidetracked to acquire more loot, levels or items -- since the game-mechanics do not hold out by themselves, so the player can only do one thing : focus on the main attraction, Completing the campaign. Thus, you have a linear-experience with grinding mechanics which does not even fuel itself, with a cutesy comedic plot which is certainly cute once, but not twice. This is why replayability is almost nill. The only time the game is truly any fun, in terms of player-to-game interaction, is when you're fighting your other friends for the right to smooch the princess, in the after-boss bonus stage. And that's only because human players more intelligent than the AI, which you can kill by blindly wailing your stick. Imagine how utterly bankrupt the diversity of attacks the player has with that comparison. If you cannot imagine, you have : One slash attack, and about 4 magic attacks : 2 types of long range magic-missle attacks (ground and air), one carpet-horizontal magic attack, and one vertical-AOE magical attack. Overall, there are about 5 attacks in the entire game (which are worth mentioning), and every single character plays virtually the exact same the way. Misc As many reviews said, there's a large roster of characters to unlock...Alas, as I said, the game mechanics are so bankrupt of any diversity that not only the roster does not matter, it is almost offensive as it emphasizes grinding-elements (gotta collect them all for some reason!) over genuine mechanics. In terms of gameplay, playing as a different character will most likely not change a thing at all. The only real difference between the characters, are the sprites. From there, they play virtually the same. So, a reason to start a Newgame+? None, really. Unless you're a 100%-completionest addict with OCD. Overall, I don't think there's any special reason to really buy this game, but there's no special reason to avoid it, either. I don't think it's bad, but I also don't think it's good. It's merely "meh". If you want to fool around with your mates for a dozen hours for 3.7$, knock yourself out. That's a fair bargain, it'll mostly serve as an excuse to talk to your friends rather to actually play a game together, though. I'd get Skullgirls for the same price. P.S: I have no idea why people say this game is unplayable without a Controller. I played the entire game with a keyboard and I could beat it with one hand tied behind my back.Show moreShow less
+Great beat'em up game +Nice humor +Tons of unlockables (characters , weapons , and animal orbs) +Awesome level design and soundtrack +Nice mini-games to expand the playtime +It has a decent replay value +Only 200 MB :o -the only flaw is that the campaign is a little bit short but that doesn't keep it from being a beautiul gem I recommend to play this game with friends (4 players) P.S: I love the last princess :*Show moreShow less
Titles made by The Behometh typically split people into two distinct groups - those that *love* them, and those that don't. I appreciate the unique humor and artwork, but it's just not my cup of tea. I find the gameplay beneath the hood is paper thin and really nothing fresh (save for Pit People). Castle Crashers is no exception. Essentially, this title is a run-of-the-mill beat'em up. You've played this a million times before, just in a different skin. For me, these titles are fun with friends for about an hour, but then they are too repetitive. I'd rather just go for something more complex such as Grim Dawn. The grind is still in your face, but there is much more depth and customization. Pros: +High level of polish +Controller support is great +Fun with friends +Definitely a quirky art- and humor-style that I appreciate (but I don't particularly like it) Cons: +Game mechanic is beat +Paper thin complexity that makes this a chore in sessions more than, oh I don't know, about an hour +Price point is a bit high I know there is a hugggee fan base for The Behometh games - I get that, I really do. Unfortunately, for me the humor and art is not enough to carry it.Show moreShow less
Do you like? Brutally slaughtering your friends to get a kiss? Making people explode? Poop jokes? General hilarity? Sandwiches that not only taste great, but also are packed with steriods? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this game is for you In short castle crashers is a medieval hack and slash adventure which you can play by yourself or with up to 3 friends (Four player Co-op). It possesses an amazing cast of unlockable characters, enough stupid moments to last a decade, and cartoony graphics which will never get old. Have Fun! 9/10Show moreShow less
The game is pretty good, but in all honesty I bought the game for my friend's and I didn't enjoy it too much. The gameplay gets kinda repetitive (although some people might like that) and if you fall behind it's kinda hard to catch up. Again, not at all a bad game , but it just wasn't for me.Show moreShow less
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.Show moreShow less
Do not get me wrong. This game is fantastic and deserves a spot in history. Except... even with friends, Castle Crashers tends to get boring quite fast. It's good for one run through the story, browsing the mini-games and then... that's it. It couldn't keep my attention for long, after that.Show moreShow less
