I feel like this should be said right off the bat - if you're expecting S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 don't bother with this. The devs already stated it was certainly an inspiration but they wanted to set themselves apart from it, which the game does very well in my opinion. (Which might be the reason for the negative reviews. Many people expected this to be like S.T.A.L.K.E.R) And the game is actually REALLY good on it's own. Yes, it has some indie-jankiness to it. But you can tell the devs poured their hearts out into this. It's important to note that you aren't going to be roaming around a massive open world. Missions are set in smaller sized mini zones, all with pretty distinct settings ranging from cramped streets with tall buildings to dense and foggy forests. There are lots of side areas to loot and interesting clues and events to find. Similar to how Metro handled exploration, where there were scripted events that you would otherwise miss if you didn't explore. The photo-scanned environments are amazing, far more detailed than I ever would have expected. The music is great, the gunplay feels good and the gore and sound effects make for a real satisfying punch when you're taking out enemies. The base building is awesome and as Todd Howard would say "It just works" I've had 0 crashes, and no bugs though I've seen a handful on streams so I know they do exist. Either way, this is a great game on its own, especially for the price. If you're looking for S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, just wait. Edit: I'd also just like to add a little appreciation to the amount of small details in this game that really add to the immersion. Things like the change of the sound of rain when you're inside, the sound of rain pitter pattering on metal surfaces, bullet casings hitting the ground (and yes you can actually see them) The enemy AI isn't the smartest in terms of battle coordination, but they do cool things like call out your position to teammates (pretty specifically at times) they'll call out their dead friends by name, they'll even mention if you've cornered yourself that "He has to come out at some point" and they'll hold their positions. Just a few little things I thought I'd add to the review. Edit 2: I just finished the game, and I can confidently say it was all worth it. The story is great, I really got attached to my squad mates. I genuinely got worried when they didn't come back from a mission, and I genuinely wanted to know more about them and what made them tick. And without spoiling too much, this all culminated into a great ending sequence almost akin to Mass Effect 2's suicide mission where a ton of your choices throughout the game all come together and affect things in all the perfect ways. (With a Fallout-esque tapestry ending and everything) Chernobylite is by far one of my favorite games of 2021 and I cannot wait to see what else these devs pull off in the future.Show moreShow less
If you expect the gameplay to be similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Metro, you will be disappointed. The game is purely stealth, and as far as I understood, this will not change in the Final Release. You have very little chance of winning against enemies who found you in the grass, and they will, because frequently there's no logic in how the enemies detect you - you could even be found hidden behind the walls. There's no option to mark enemies, they often make no sounds or noise that you could use for guidance. When I go undetected, I feel that it's not a matter of skill, but mostly luck. So, if the game will remain 100% stealth, and not mixed-approach like Metro or S.T.A.L.K.E.R., then they should work hard to make it much more comfortable than it is right now.Show moreShow less
FIRST OF ALL ITS NOT STALKER. IT'S NOT TRYING TO BE STALKER, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STALKER. It's an amazing game with amazing devs who care about their project. I recommend it to everyone who likes a story driven game with lots of choices that matters. The gunplay is fine and the mechanics are great. My only real gripe is the limited size of the maps but they are so beautifully rendered it isn't an awful gripe honestly. The small size of the maps though is offset by how they change as you go thru the game. Just like the enemies. How you play will affect the game world and the enemies you find and how many of them there are. I got into this game by not doing due research and thinking of it as some kind of stalker offshoot. I was wrong and happily so, because this game's story is much more engaging and thought out than stalker. Also to everyone who is knocking on the English dub team, I mean your playing a game made for anther language by people who speak anther language and not your playing it in that language so off course the voice acting is going to be off. Learn to read a little bit (aka subtitles) and the voice acting is great. I personally love hearing them speak Russian or Ukrainian (not sure which, sorry I'm an stupid american who only can tell what English sounds like). TLDR: Great game that isn't stalker but has stalkerish atmosphere. In fact I'd say I like this game as much as the stalker series and that's saying something as those games were my childhood and I still play them occasionally to this day. I highly recommend this game, and if your on the fence wait for a sale, for this is a game you'll want to play at some point no doubt about it.Show moreShow less
Beautiful And Story-Rich But Hamstrung By Repetitive Gameplay Chernobylite is as beautiful as it advertises. Each map is rendered to photorealistic detail and the developers have even ventured into the Exclusion Zone to scan real-world locations. The story has a few twists and turns, but the entire package is held back by shallow repetitive gameplay. The setting is the real draw but don't expect parallels between the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. This game is more a fetch-and-collect with a heavy emphasis on stealth with a little gunplay (which can be avoided usually). Open-world is also a misnomer, as you are limited to a small but beautiful collection of maps and your dingy warehouse where you retire every evening. You will accidently go to the same area twice in a row and find it deserted of resources, yet still have to plow on through whatever the objective (get medicine, ammo, etc.). Combat is a joke, with most encounters having simple AI and being bulletsponges. They sense you through floors and it is impossible to stealthy kill anyone, as you cannot carry the bodies and it takes so long to take them down. Killing anything hurts your pysche but according to gameplay mechanics, killing a squad of guards is nothing some vodka cannot wipe away from your conscious. Crafting is collecting mushrooms, scrap, and various others to create items at your base. The base may look nice in screenshots but has no life in it. No one sits in the chairs, the TV and radio never play, and your companions just stand around awkwardly waiting for you to speak to them -- there is no life. Chernobylite is a pretty game and the story is decent but not worth the time rinse-and-repeating the same maps, creeping around the same bushes, and listening to the same drab voice-overs as you easily predict the 'twists'. The developers did an amazing job recreating the setting but fell short creating a game to go along with it.Show moreShow less
No one would read it but I'll write anyway. CHERNOBYLITE... this is like the first job after graduation. I'll tell you how... I have been on PS3 and PS4 since 2012 until last month when I decided to buy a gaming PC. Like many others, I struggled the transition phase which is still there. I loved Metro all the parts and while stalker 2 still in the pipeline and after the major disappointment from pre-ordering cyberpunk (all of this happened on ps4), I took a gamble on Chernobylite (on PC). I can proudly tell my Ps4 buddies that I play Chernobylite. This game feels Nostalgic and create more urge in me to play Stalker 2. The game is a mixture of People Management, Inventory Management, Base Building, Stalking, Exploring and a story that'll make you wonder the choices you are making are right or not. May be I do not know any better on PC. But from my point of view, I have totally emerged in this game. I play alone since I have no buddies on PC yet. This, however makes me grasp 100% of what the game has to offer. Thank you Developers for this game, looking forward for the DLC and I haven't encountered any bugs yet. I guess I bought the game after the bugs were fixed. This helped a lot with my first impressions of the game. PS: this is my first review ever on Steam. :DShow moreShow less
This game is not what you think it is. It's essentially a story driven linear game that decided to not do that and make it open worldish. This game doesn't know what it wants to be and that kills the game. The game loop is like this: You get a base, you get to build things in it that provide you with weapons, upgrades and equipment. The base also provides a place where your "crew" stays, you can talk to them and assign them to missions to bring you a little bit of loot. you also get to train with them, giving you stat boosts. You choose out of the missions to play yourself, each mission is in an area inside the chernobyl area. Once you get into a mission, there is the main guest inside the map and side quests. You can explore inside a small map, watch out for radiation and gas, pickup the loot, kill some very dumb AI. (the dumbest AI I have ever seen in a video game) and meet some NPC's. some missions will further the story a bit, some will give you supplies or allies. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum. It's always the same 7ish small maps you will revisit. The problem with it all is that nothing of it feels rewarding. The building aspect is weak. The story is weak. the shooting and such is terrible. inventory management is a hassle. It doesn't feel openworld at all. So we come back to the core of the problem. The Devs didn't know what route to take with this game and made something in between everything and thus failing in all of its aspects. In the end, I didn't know why I kept playing this bad game, so I stopped. I will give it 1 good thing. it's a pretty game and the buildings and such look realistic.Show moreShow less
Best storyline I've had since Metro games. Respect to everyone who worked on the game and even went to Chernobyl to make every single bit of Pripyat in the game 1:1.Show moreShow less
Looks amazing, the atmosphere is there but otherwise I feel like it's just not what a Stalker is looking for. No open world, only medium sized linear levels. The AI is "bad". The story feels so random and unnecessary. The worst part is that there is no free exploration and you are forced to play "missions" that you can run throug within 10 minutes. If the devs manage to combine these levels into one area and give us the freedom that we as stalkers deserve I'll gladly have another look. This is early access so I'll wait and see...Show moreShow less
It has the "Cheeki". But requires more "Breeki".Show moreShow less
STORY-LINE: 10/10. Great story, this is the main heart of the game and will be the pay-off. The story-line is well constructed and is the only reason I decided to grind through the game and finish it. AI: 3/10. Ai is not smart and is simplistic at most. Very little mechanics involved in this aspect of the game. In addition, there are certain hazards on the map. These hazards only negatively affected you, the player, and did not have any negative affect on the AI it self who were patrolling said area, making it feel unrealistic. AI ANIMATIONS: 3/10. Very awkward and low quality animations and movement. AIs often move their arms around in a cringy manner when talking, almost as if they are trying too hard to be cool. ACTION / COMBAT: 4/10. Very weak combat mechanics. AI will know where you are in combat and it feels like a rushed aspect of the game. For example, they will keep their aim trained on you, like an aim-bot and wall-hack, as they continue to shoot at you through a wall. There is nothing special about the combat mechanics, a negative aspect of the game actually. This felt like a chore half-way through. STEALTH: 3/10. Basic stealth mechanics and a very poor design. For example, two enemies will be standing on top of you, in the open, but because you are one step lower from them, they don't see you. Also, if an enemy is UNDERGROUND, with solid earth between the two of you, they can still detect you if you're running around above them. LOOT / CRAFTING / SCAVENGING: 7/10. Scavenging, looting and crafting are a nice touch. There are not that many "different" things to craft, they tend to all center around the main functions of the game (health, sanity, armor, radiation resistance.) VARIETY OF WEAPONS: 3/10. There are a small selection of weapons that feel like they all do the same thing once you mess around with the different attachments, ect. I soon found that certain guns were useless and there was no real balance to it. WEAPON CUSTOMIZATION: 5/10. There is a basic amount of customization you can do for your weapons. But at least they did implement it. BASE BUILDING: 7/10. Great addition to the game. You can customize your base with a good selection of building stations, ect. VOICE ACTING: 9/10. Very good voice acting which gives each character their own personality. There is A TON of new dialog every day from each character that discusses their past and opinions on things; to the point where I just started skipping it all towards the end. Enemies will have the same standard dialog, but that is to be expected. WORLD / OPEN WORLD: 6/10. There are a few select maps you will play on throughout the game, mostly utilizing the same maps with different slight changes. There are also hazards and areas to explore. The maps are well designed, however, like mentioned before, there are only a few select to explore. You will find places that will be utilized for future missions, making it feel empty and lacking as the discovery holds little meaning until you progress further in the game where it will then be utilized. SCARE FACTOR: 8/10. I did jump a few times, I am not going to lie. But there are only a few moments of this in the game. SUMMARY: Chernobylite has a great story and provides a great atmosphere to uncover the secrets behind the story-line. Although the game play is awkward with animations and poor combat mechanics, it does provide a good amount of interesting play time but with slightly repetitive missions and maps as a negative. In my opinion, this game is for the STORY DRIVEN players. The game is worth playing, but maybe not for full price. The lack of combat and AI mechanics leave this game feeling like something from early 2000s. The maps can tend to feel lacking once you have made your first exploration through them - subsequent visits leave few new discoveries. Although I did enjoy the game at first, the above points started to take its toll and the game felt more like a chore. Towards the middle-end, I wanted to exit the game due to becoming slightly bored and look up the ending online, however, I decided to just grind through and play for the story. TL;DR : I really liked this game, but I didn't really like this game.Show moreShow less
