Honestly stray was better and more emotional than this game. This game just made me absolutely angry. An irresponsible woman (Olive) adopting a cat to replace one she "lost", only for her daughter to be a b**** and abandon the cat. And then upon returning to the house Olive decides "yeah not my problem" and you're repeatedly kicked out of any and everywhere you go. This is just a game showing animal abuse by neglect hidden by "cute" game play. As a cat owner myself I'm disgusted by the actions of the characters in this game, and they should not be allowed anywhere near an adoption center. Characters aside, the game play was slow and you don't really get the option to behave how you want to since it is a set story. Seriously if you love cats and you hate animal abuse/neglect, don't bother with this game. It'll just p*** you offShow moreShow less
Before buying the game, I saw a few negative reviews but decided to give it a shot anyway. Now, I want to leave my honest review, which will hopefully convince you to give it a chance too. This game is specially made for cat owners or people who absolutely love cats and would do anything for them. Before getting into the full review, I wanted to mention that this game was made by just two developers, Samantha Cable and Kostia Liakhov, and it took them a few years to complete. ---Graphics--- 🧶 Beautiful 🧶 Good 🐈 Decent 🧶 Bad 🧶 Paint ---Gameplay--- 🧶 VERY GOOD 🧶 Good 🐈 Decent 🧶 Mehh 🧶 Watch paint dry instead ---Audience--- 🐈 Kids 🐈 Teens 🐈 Adult (18+) 🐈 Grandma ---Game Time--- 🧶 You finish it before you start 🐈 Short (3 Hours) 🧶 Average 🧶 Long ---Bugs--- 🧶 No bugs 🐈 A few 🧶 Many 🧶 Not playable You can see through walls in some places or when looking through windows, but none of these bugs significantly ruin the gameplay. ---Story--- 🐈 Maybe you will cry 🧶 Good 🧶 Decent 🧶 Bad I saw a few negative reviews regarding the game’s story, especially the ending. Personally, I really enjoyed it. It might not have been the ending we were expecting, but that is exactly what I love about story-driven games. I want to be surprised, not to have already guessed how it is going to end. ---PC Requirements--- 🧶 Check If you can run paint 🧶 Potato 🐈 Decent 🧶 Fast 🧶 Rich I am not sure what to say about the price, honestly. For some, it costs too much, especially since the game only lasts 3 hours if you do not go for all the achievements. But if you love this genre and cats, I think it is worth it. The game was created by only two new developers, so we cannot have the same expectations as we do for big games with huge teams and budgets. The decision to buy it is up to you. I did not like the people being extremely harsh in their reviews, and I almost did not buy it because of them. In the end, I did not regret it. I liked the game and, for the price, it was worth it. Ultimately, it depends on each person. My final verdict is: ---Rate--- 🐈 7.5/10Show moreShow less
I'm convinced most of the positive reviews are bots. Gameplay is fine, cats are cute, but... EDIT: Positive reviews aren't bots. There is a msg at the end of the game claiming its a small dev team asking for reviews so this is likely the reason. The main human characters Olive and Mae are both horrid people with no redeeming qualities. Each of them abuse the cats throughout the game in multiple ways. At the very least, both characters purposely abandon a cat. -Mae originally throws out Olive's (her sick mother) original cat without telling her. -Olive adopts new cat (same look/name). -Olive spills pills and just leaves them for the 'replacement cat' to eat. -Mae neglects to care for her mother or even check on her, allowing her to miss doctors appointments and phone calls without any concern. When Olive has a health emergency, Mae throws out the replacement cat too, citing her mother can't care for it. The irony... -Original cat returns. Following this, Olive DRIVES THE REPLACEMENT CAT OUT INTO THE WILD AND LEAVES IT ALONE?! Rather than accepting responsibility and keeping both cats, or even taking the replacement cat back to the shelter, SHE ABANDONS IT. This game feels like an abusive family/relationship from a cat's pov. The cat is manipulated into loving this terrible woman. Replacement cat becomes 'sewerslidal', standing in the street waiting to be hit by a car. As the car approaches, the cat has the revelation to FIND OLIVE AGAIN? and BOTH CATS RETURN TO THEIR ABUSER IN THE END?? I feel guilty for playing through the whole thing and getting the achievements. I was holding out for something redeeming about the story.Show moreShow less
This ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game broke me. ♥♥♥♥ that woman. ♥♥♥♥ her daughter. ♥♥♥♥ every human character in this game. There’s definitely a strong moral message here and it certainly came through. Will I 100% this game? Yes. Am I happy about it? ♥♥♥♥ this game for making me feel things.Show moreShow less
This game made me SO angry. And not because of the outdated graphics or not-so-good controls. The story is just plain awful. Every character in this game, human or not, are the absolute worst. Always angry and cruel. This is not a game about a copycat-cat, this is a game about a Stockholm syndrome. Ending is the epitome of this. Your 'owners' commit straight up animal abuse by throwing cats away and not getting them back MULTIPLE times. And in the end you present with a choice of, spoiler alert, commiting suicide or not. What the actual ♥♥♥♥? I'm a cat person myself and an owner of two beautiful kittens, one of which is formely a stray, and I can't imagine how can you be so cruel to YOUR pets. If you can't have a pet, then don't have it in the first place, or at least give it to the shelter, not throw away in the forest at the side of the road ffsShow moreShow less
Reading some of the comments, especially the negative ones, I'd just say: Yes, the game is "short" (2.5 - 3 hours)... and yes, the game is not for everyone. Probably if you never have had cats, it just might not be for you as I can imagine the emotional parts do not kick off too much. And that is what the game is about, the journey and the feelings, not the "gameplay". As the description, the trailers and the "emotional" tag was not "warning" enough for some, here again: It is NOT a light hearted cute cuddly story about a cat. If you're still unsure, play the demo, it will give you an idea of the game's tone and the direction. Then decide if you want to follow the storyline and buy the game or stop right there. It might save you from wrong expectations.Show moreShow less
I am really torn and I was looking forward to this game for a long while since it was first announced. The concept itself is great, and I was hoping despite the darker tones that the game covered that our little kitty would receive a happy ending to her story. However I was met with an appalling ending that I was not pleased with at all, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start off with what I did like about it at least. The design and play through itself, while it had it's wonky moments I did enjoy playing around as a cat and enjoying listening to the narrator as we moved through the world. This however is where my likes end, and the spoilers will begin. The whole time, our poor kitty is adopted in order to replace Olive (the old woman's) missing cat Dawn. It's obvious our poor kitty has gone through some trauma in the past, and Olive is not a good pet owner. She kicks us when we scratch furniture yet doesn't have any scratching posts to discourage the behavior. She really is also not in any physical shape at all, however for whatever reason we start opening up to Olive. Then disaster strikes, sending Olive to the hospital. Olive's horrible daughter Mae comes, kicks us out of the house like she did with the previous cat a month prior and the original Dawn comes back and is mistaken as us (Should mention Mae also debates on whether smuther Olive in her sleep or not after this....). Olive, in response when she realizes that we are not just some stray, but the cat she adopted from the shelter instead of taking us back to the shelter to be safe and cared for and hopefully find a newer better home, proceeds to drive us out into the country side and abandon us. Leaving us for dead. Even after all of that, the game makes us effectively go back to our abuser in the end with the message of 'oh despite them doing bad things, they still need us so it is our home'. The message gets lost in translation with this I feel as it could of been very meaningful if we got to go to a more loving and deserving home. Instead we are forced to go back with Olive. In the end I'm just horribly disappointed in this game and it's unhealthy mindset it has on the situation...I really was hoping for something better.Show moreShow less
What an odd game. It's the story about an old selfish woman who cares more about what animals can do for her than what happens to the animals themselves, her even worse daughter, and some cat lives they affect along the way. The game acts as if it is portraying a message, and yet the message makes absolutely no sense at all. You could even say that the ending message was unethical, if taken to heart. The sheer oddness of the twisted message makes it worth taking part in in some way. Playing this game and experiencing what it's trying to say feels kind of the same as if you were playing a game about social cues that was written by someone autistic. For some people, the message is going to make them upset and it will make them down vote the game, and that is understandable. But the enjoyment of getting to play the cat still made it fun for me overall, and the backwards convoluted message is something quite different to experience.Show moreShow less
I thought a lot about if this should be a positive or negative review, because this game has some really good qualities to it. The graphics and art direction are great, the music works well, there are cool ideas here and there and there's obviously some passion behind this project. The gameplay is simple, a bit finicky maybe, but it works for this kind of game, it's imprecise yes, but it never asks precision from the player; QTEs are often not responsive enough, but nothing that really hinders the experience. My problem with this game is with its narrative. SPOILERS about the whole story: The story about an old dying lady (Olive) that loses her cat (Dawn) and gets another one to replace it is sad and didn't got me in a good mood, but I can deal with it, not all stories have to be happy and overall you can build up something good even with this premise. You slowly get attached to your house and your owner, and as a traumatized cat it's cute and wholesome to see this unfold, maybe it happens a bit too fast but that's okay too. When Olive gets back from the hospital, her daughter (Mae) kicks you out of the house because "her mom can't take care of a cat"; it's awful and cruel, but such persons exists and it's okay to have a villain in the story. When Olive searches for you, she finds the original Dawn instead and takes her back home without realizing it's not you. It takes a really long time for her to realize that there are two Dawns and when she does, what does she do? She ABANDONS you in the woods! Olive is presented as a good character, and she acts like this is the best for you, which is INSANE; no home cat should learn to live in the wild, it's cruel and you can't expect it to survive, besides there are many other, better solutions to the problem. You can take it back to the shelter, you can find a new home for it, you can do whatever, but almost everything is better than abandoning it. Dawn somehow survives and decides to go back to Olive, a strange and undeserved devotion to someone who just did something that bad to you, without any redemption. Basically the game ends with a "good ending", in which both Dawns (the newest one renamed Sunrise) get to be wildcats but still living near Olive, which is in a retirement home. After all we went through, this ending doesn't feel like it's earned, but at the same time I can't imagine a way to redeem Olive after what happened. Also, some parts of the story seemed just put there without any rhyme or reason other than make the whole thing sadder, like when Mae thinks about killing her own mother with a pillow. I'm sure it was not the developers intent, but the messages we got from this game are all messed up, like: "Even if you mistreat your pets, they'll always forgive you" "Doing bad things to others has no consequences for you" "As a cat, you have to learn to live in the wild even if you're an house cat" No spoiler tldr: I'm ok with a sad story, but this game feels just cruel for the sake of it, and the messages you get from it are twisted to say the least. I enjoyed many things, but the ones that I didn't really ruined the experience for me. Also, games like this need a "Chapter Select" option, even only for achievement hunting, since once you know what happens there's not much else in the replayability department, and there are many missable achievements.
