I can't believe Blood got a sequel 25 years laterShow moreShow less
I really wanted to like Cultic. I played the demo, thought it had promise, bought it on release day, and it’s.. OK. I’ve read that the solo dev responsible for the entire experience doesn’t want it to be seen as a Blood rehash – which is odd, because he seems to have gone out of his way to make a Blood rehash. It’s Extra Voxel Blood! But really it’s Imitation Voxel Blood. The game lacks any sense of personality or soul, which Blood has in spades. But Cultic certainly does have most of the checklist of items someone would create after watching a Blood playthrough: cultists, zombies, horror monsters, double barrel, dynamite, fire, levels in churches and mines. The player even rises (seemingly) from the bloody dead at the beginning. How is this not Blood? The only feature distinguishing Cultic from the plethora of other recent retro FPS titles is its visual style. It's drab and has voxels! That’s it. Nothing interesting is ever done with it, either. It just looks drab and smeared with crap all the time. While I don’t mind this style, it’s pretty boring to explore ANOTHER mine which has been smeared with feces. The gameplay is fine, but it’s nothing I haven’t played before. Except when it isn’t fine, of course. Every gameplay element has at least one mechanic or twist that is poorly thought out or just outright frustrating. The weapons all feel punchy EXCEPT you can’t switch while reloading, or immediately after you’ve fired them, or right after you draw them. So get used to being pummeled while your guy finishes his animation. I like blowing things up and setting dudes on fire EXCEPT I need to light dynamite and molotovs by HOLDING MB2? Then I need to charge up my throw with MB1, but not too long because the damn thing is going to explode! It should be light and charge throw with MB1, throw unlit with MB2. I like sniping these cultists from across the map EXCEPT the FG42 is a sniper rifle now? And despite the fact that the bullet hit is instantaneous, there’s a slowass tracer just meandering over there afterward? Getting a bit of slo-mo when I hit a headshot is cool EXCEPT it doesn’t work all the time and if you’re using a slow firing weapon, it’s totally useless because your animations are slo-mo, too. Even the order the weapons are in is frustrating, with molotovs and dynamite in the middle. The levels are OK. I mean, the world feels dead and completely static, but I can get around fine. The platforming is kind of slippery, but how could it not be with the amount of crap smeared on everything? This cult sure is digging a lot.. Almost every building leads to a mine. Seriously, bring your pick axe, because every other level is underground. The layouts are very linear, and even when I’m outside and things “feel” open, there’s really only one way to progress. Speaking of progressing, this game doesn’t ask for consent before just walking me inexorably into the next level. To hell with the secret I’m looking for, if I walk into the magic area I’m OUT! I’m pretty sure I fought all of these enemies back in 1997. That’s not a bad thing, they’re actually varied and (sometimes) require different strategies to fight. But I’m also pretty sure they are totally blind because their pathfinding is horrid. I’ve watched every single enemy type get stuck in a door, or on a table, or seemingly on just nothing at all. And don’t get me started on the bigger guys! Those dudes are so fat they can’t fit through most smaller spaces. So I just casually walk through that normal human doorway and taunt their XXL butts with buckshot. Oh, they may be deaf, too, because often I’ll fire a gun ten feet away from some guy and he will continue staring at that poop colored wall like he was before I murdered his conjoined twin. Oh man, there’s this shotgun cultist who is a sniper at 20 meters. It’s weird, because I picked his shotgun and it has a two inch barrel and when I shot it the pellets went in all directions. There is nothing horrible and game breaking. It’s all just not very good. The things Cultic does add which aren’t part of Blood all feel like they were snipped out of modern games but never feel useful or necessary. Yeah, the slo-mo is ok, but as I said, it isn’t really thought out or helpful or predictable with certain weapons. Oh the dash. This game has a dash button. It ALSO has a slide button! Is every FPS required to have these now? Does Cultic need a dash? Does it improve anything or lead to any strategies which aren’t possible without it? I don’t think so. Let’s see, what else.. How about this: most of the game’s sounds can be summed up with one word: velcro. Just make any sound the way you would normally make it, but also take off your toddler’s shoes at the same time. Yeah, it’s intentionally low res and clunky, but it’s also grating and repetitive and forced. The footsteps. Lord, the footsteps. Now that you have taken your toddler’s shoes off, have them dance and VOILA: Cultic footsteps! There is a story, but it is completely optional (as in you have to read notes, there is no dialog until the very end when you hear like three words). The story I read isn’t compelling enough to discuss more than to say it is thin, and ends on a cliffhanger because this is only half of the game. Probably that wasn’t the right way to release this. That about wraps it up. A mostly soulless imitation of Blood with more voxels. I paid $10, and spent about 8 hours playing though it. There is just nothing to distinguish Cultic from any other single/small dev retro FPS, which is a shame. I know I am ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the huge effort that the dev put into his game. And I am. I really didn’t like it very much. I applaud the effort – a lot of the basic gameplay is workable – but as it is, there are too many mines and too little personality to make it worth recommending. I would bet the next project this dev takes on will be better, and I will watch out for it.Show moreShow less
🩸 Blood II: The People's Chosen ExpansionShow moreShow less
A painfully mediocre FPS that on the surface may look like a decent homage to classic FPS games, most notably to "Blood", only, except outside of a few borrowed concepts, all the similarities it has to Blood (or anything of that era really) fades away almost immediately into a dull, run of the mill FPS Level layouts are incredibly basic and linear, with the intricacy, creativity and complexity of any of the Build engine games (which had levels that offered many routes to take and many ways to play through them) and FPS games in general of that era no where to be seen. The levels are split between maps that take place mostly outdoors, which are just made up of a series of large, wide open areas connected together in linear tandem by passages or pathways (which feel like filler) and of which sometimes also include a brief interior section such as a short cave system or the interior of a ship, garage, saw mill etc on the level and the maps that take place solely indoors offer at best the odd alternate route into a gun fight. The starting level on any of Blood's episodes have more complexity to them than anything you'll see here. Environments are bland and very samey through-out. Again, completely lacks the character and detailing seen in Build Engine games. Gameplay is a stock standard FPS blueprint bogged down heavily by having movement that doesn't allow for you to generate more speed. No strafe running, bunny hopping or rocket jumping, nothing that adds to the manoeuvrability of the player in a fun way (while there is some weird sliding and jump kicking glitch, it's not at all a satisfying alternative to use) which makes gun fights feel pretty dull as well as making traversing the game's numerous wide open areas feel like a chore. There are also no powerups at all. No jumping boots that allow for you to carve your own path through intricately designed levels (which the game completely lacks), no speed power ups to make running down a 800m straight less boring etc, nothing to switch up gameplay dynamics. The encounter design is weak through-out. Maps with wide open areas (the majority of them) leave the player with the option to simply pick a safe spot and pop heads with minimal effort as it never really forces you into them, save for the odd exception, which of course also ties into the overall poor level design. It also makes minimal use of clever traps that put the player at odds. AI is piss poor, even for an FPS of this kind. You'll see them often get stuck on objects, unable to pass through doorways etc and due to the level design being the way it is, the AI is not nearly as effective as it should be. Boss fights I found to be incredibly lazy, which consist of having the player pretty much just shoot at a wall while waves of enemies spawn in. The OST is made up some really decent horror sounding tracks that set up a nice atmosphere until when it decides to toss those out for totally subjective synthwave tracks when "♥♥♥♥ goes down", which I found jarring and unfitting. The sprite work, although a little blurry on enemy models I thought was well enough done. The sound design is alright, everything sounds as it should. Game was completed on Very Hard. All-in-all I can't take away from the amount of effort put into Cultic and the fact that it's all made by one person is very impressive too, however I feel that was its weakness. It doesn't excel in any one direction, like a jack of all trades master of none. I really think there was way too much to chew here for a one man team. Here's hoping Chapter 2 at least improves upon level design as I found that to be the weakest area of the game which dragged down other middling aspects even further.Show moreShow less

Deceitful pricing, when I purchased "chapter 1" in EA, there was no upfront statement that "Chapter 1" is the whole game, and the rest of the game is paid DLC. It was hidden in the FAQ, not completely upfront. Chapter 1 should not be the "Full Game" while still in EA; while adding in features of Chapter 2. Then paywall it the chapter. Going to try and get a refund. This is insulting for an EA title.Show moreShow less

It may look like Blood but it feels boring. On a technical note: There is a frequent stutter. I am using a high-end PC (AMD 5900X / RTX 3080).Show moreShow less
By buying this game you automatically join the cult of the boomer shooter connoisseurs. Good gunplay, nice retro graphics and cool level design. Yes the almighty Caleb would be proud. Fun game so far would recommend. 👌Show moreShow less
Although weapon gun play and enemies awesome, but boring uninterested level design really keep me to progress further.Show moreShow less
