If you're among the many people that have recently discovered Danganronpa you might be wondering what this game is and if you should play it, and I don't blame you. All 3 Danganronpa games are great but the conclusion to the series is restricted to the D3 Anime and if you are craving more explanation of the story, particularly between D1 & 2, you might be wanting to dive into this. Well to start off this doesn't at all play like the others, its more like a third person action adventure staring two girls facing off against 5 children and their army of Monokumas. Initially I was worried that the kids would be one note and boring villains straight out of Kids Next Door that wanted to kill adults simply because 'adults are bad'. Turns out this was far, far from the truth, and this is easily the darkest game in the series, even going beyond the series, it's dark. Like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up dark. The children are all severely traumatized and suffering from PTSD. The first 2 chapters might go the way you are expecting given the warning I just gave, with children literally piling the adult bodies, making displays, and relentlessly killing without a moments thought. But then everything changes in Chapter 3, and sets the tone for the problems throughout the rest of the game that make this game absolutely disgusting, abhorrent, and contains excessive sexualization of children, much of it played for humor. SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THE REVIEW Chapter 3's focus is on the villain Kotoko Utsugi, a child actress who's mother frequently forced her into sexual assault by older men in exchange for money, citing envy over her daughter's youth. Now let's get one thing out of the way here, discussion about abuse is, while not encouraged, something I expect media to tackle at times. It opens peoples eyes to issues that might go ignored by others in society, and can at times help people come forward and confront their own abusers. Shows like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit are great at this, discussion is fine. However, shortly after she is introduced, and that backstory is established, the character falls over and we are given a shot of her underwear. All nuanced discussion is out the window, now it's an attempt at humor, disgusting humor. Kotoko then kidnaps our protagonist Komaru, and straps her into a machine that gropes her, and you have to play a minigame to stop yourself from being molested. THEN Toko shows up to save her and a fight ensures, to which Toko uses her scissors to attack, and landing hits results in cutting off Kotoko's clothing down to her underwear. For the rest of the game, Toko makes references to Kotoko taking Komaru's virginity. The scene was, without a doubt, revolting, but I at least held onto the hope that once the chapter was done and the villain was gone, the weird child abuse 'humor' would stop. It did not. Here are just a few examples of some of the other questionable things the game contains. - Komaru believes she can see ghosts because one time she woke up in the middle of the night to her teacher standing over her in bed, apologizing when he gets spotted. She only thinks it was a ghost because he quit his job the next morning and disappeared. - The leader of the resistance against the kids, you know the supposed good guys, says he isn't interested in Toko because he prefers his girls 'as young as possible'. - One of the Monokuma bears that can talk hugs one of the villain girls and makes several remarks about her chest. There's just so much sexual 'humor' in a game that was trying to talk about children with severe PTSD. Every one of the other kids is equally messed up as Kotoko, things such as being beaten by an alcoholic father, being forced to wear a mask because they were told they were so ugly peoples eyes would explode if they took it off, or being forced to study being kept up with stimulants for weeks on end. NONE of those are made jokes of, none are used for humor. The writer/director clearly has some strange thing going on. I know its Japan, I've played my fair share of games with weird fanservice, but this is going to another level to say that this game needs to be burned. If you really want to know what happens, watch the first cutscene, and the ending, that should cover it for you. Maybe read a synopsis.Show moreShow less
I finished the game at 100%. See last section for the final conclusions: Very early review of the game. First of all: DONT PLAY THIS GAME BEFORE DANGANRONPA 1 OR SUPER DANGANRONPA 2, because it will sure spoil the story. About the port: For now I have only played the prologue, but the game looks very good and has not any performance issues. You can clearly see how everything in game has been remastered for higher resolutions; the only thing that is a bit lacking are the 3D cutscenes which still seem a bit bad, although in my opinion that is not an issue because they are good enough. I have not tested the keyboard+mouse control, but given that the game is a third-person shooter, it sure will feel better, I migh even change later, although you can use the a controller without any problems. UPDATE: I have been playing with Keyboard+Mouse and I prefer it over controller. The only downside is that there are not customizable keybindings, althought the default ones are pretty good. About graphical options, in my opinion the game has enough. You can customize in the launcher of the game if you want to display it borderless window or fullscreen along with other graphical options like antialiasing. Something I noticed is the lack of V-sync option on Fullscreen mode, but I didnt see any tearing so its okay. About the game itself: This game does not follow the same pattern as the two ones before (simply because the author wanted to make something different lol) and instead of a trial-murder-puzzle game, is a fps with some hack-and-slash. Even so, the game keeps the Danganronpa feeling and I think its worth a play if you are fan of the series. Storywise is not very important, but give details about what happened between the first and second game and introduces some characters that are then shown in the Danganronpa 3 animation, which ends the Hope's Peak Academy Arc, so if you like the universe absolutely play this. Final conclusions: The game is fine. Recommended if you like the Danganronpa Universe and dont expect nothing like DR1 and SDR2. The port is fine overall, I havent find any bugs nor performance issues. The only con I can say is that its a little easy with keyboard+mouse simply because aiming to the weak point of the enemies is very simple.Show moreShow less
Ultra Despair Girls had the potential to be the best game in the franchise. Two characters with pretty good character development, decent gameplay, and a lesson that adults aren’t always right because they’re adults and kids deserve freedom and autonomy. But no, Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls is a cesspool of some freak’s fantasies. The fan service is the biggest issue with this game. It’s one thing if there’s some fan service here and there, but having an entire chapter essentially be fan service, especially of children, is disgusting. Most people don’t want to see a close up of children’s ass, most people don’t want to undress a child, most people don’t want to see children kiss. And then there’s Haiji, who could’ve been a cool and interesting character, but alas, the developers made him a pedophile (which isn’t even important for the story). As for the gameplay itself, it’s decent. It’s kind of similar to Resident Evil (third person shooter) but it’s not really anything to write home about. If you get triggered by SA, fan service, or NSFW content in general, save your time, money, energy, and mental health.Show moreShow less

The main good thing about this game is it made me appreciate Toko, I used to hate her but I really enjoyed her character arc in this. BUT, I honestly just cannot recommend this game due to the amount of gross pedo stuff. Like if it was just one joke or whatever I'd just let it slide, I mean Danganronpa is no stranger to random sexual jokes, but there are genuine LITTLE KIDS in the jokes and scenes this time that just put me off. It's not a spoiler really but I'll mark it anyway, there are multiple times when a little girl (Kotoko) flashes her underwear, and when the main character (Komaru) gets up-skirted (although at least the main character is a bit older but still underaged at 16/17 years old, mind you) And another scene that made me uncomfortable, this one actually is a real spoiler: Komaru gets groped by robot arms you have to swat away in a minigame. At least it wasn't the little girl this time but I mean Komaru is still like 16/17 Not only that, but there's a character who just actively admits to liking girls "as young as possible". Which was so weird. Nothing creepy happened with them, but they didn't even address it, no idea why it was even added to the game tbh it was just random A big message in the game is how taking advantage of children is bad, how it ruins children's mental state and how messed up these children's childhoods were. But then the game turns around and makes us look at things that are also sexualizing children. It just seemed very hypocritical, and really takes away from their argument. It kinda just keeps going "wow this is so gross wow yea this is terrible look how terrible this is yea haha look wow...", the argument could have been made way better without also making the player view such heinous stuff It's pretty normal to have sexual jokes in Danganronpa games anyway, and honestly even though I dislike them, if it were just that I'd be fine. It's just the overbearing amount of jokes PLUS actually seeing messed up scenes sexualizing kids that really put this over the edge for me. Because I really wanted to like this game, I really enjoyed the parts of the game that were giving me interesting lore and plot. It just really doesn't know when to stop.Show moreShow less

Echoing many other reviews on this page, i would only recommend this game for Danganronpa fans or those that want additional lore content without just looking it up online. This game is perfectly playable and runs fine, but its substance isn't very fun or fulfilling to play. Shooting doesn't ever pick up from the first part of the game, despite having lots of different ammo and enemy types. It always boils down to "shoot for the eyes" or "use special gimmick to take down," rarely offering challenge or truly fun gameplay. The final boss in particular was horrible to control, with the camera snapping you jarringly from ever looking back while needing to go backwards for items. All levels were super linear and ridden with hallways and corridors. The story and idea itself are pretty interesting, and it certainly has the horror charm of the other Danganropa games. Characters are very hit or miss for me. A few returning and new characters are a blast to listen to and interact with, while the main 2 characters you control the whole game are annoying and miserable for nearly the whole journey. It really gets hard to enjoy when the best quality is the story and the main characters are always just miserable or upset. Breaks from gameplay for dialogue or cutscenes are also way too common, rarely does one actually play the game for more than 5 minutes without a cutscene. The original music was very well composed, but there was little of that. Instead, most of the music is cut directly from Danganronpa 1 or 2, or remixes from both. Visuals were nice, the game reminded me of Jet Set Radio graphically. A nice nod to old 3D action and adventure games. Tailing points based on several attributes (Story: 6/10, Gameplay: 4/10, Controls: 8/10, Content: 5/10, Presentation: 8/10, Music: 7/10, Performance: 10/10, 46/70 total), this game scores a disappointing 66/100.For Danganropa fans i would rate this a 70, but as a game this is a muddled experience. Perhaps this should have been a full Visual Novel or anime instead of game, as aside from story there is little here to enjoy after one playthrough.Show moreShow less
A word of warning going into this game, whether you're a Danganronpa fan or not: a lot of the subject matter in this game is WAY darker compared to the first two Danganronpa games, and is pretty dark to average person. You may be saying "Wait, it gets darker than just straight up cold-blooded murder like in the other games?" Yes it does. It's not a deterrant of the game, just a word of warning so that those who play it know what they're getting into. That being said, it's a really solid game. Great storytelling, great characters, a nice blend of serious, bone-chilling semi-horror and almost 4th-wall breaking silliness. It's absurd It's (somewhat) scary (in a cartoonish kind of way) It's fanservice-y at times It's Danganronpa! Hope to see you aboard Kazutaka Kodaka's Wild Ride!Show moreShow less
This game contains none of what makes the other danganronpa games good (the fun mystery and good characters). And everything that makes the series bad (distasteful representation of mental health and the oversexualization of characters even minors). One section has a minigame where your character gets raped by a child and the game makes jokes about it like "try not to have too much fun!" It makes me sick to see this game receive the praise that it gets, it makes me not want to keep playing any of the games in this series. It is all incredibly distasteful, I cannot recommend playing it.Show moreShow less
