Bought this game long time ago, never really got into it. Then Dead Effect 2 VR was published as a big surprise to the VR community. And for the reason I already own the "normal" version I got a 75% coupon for the VR version. So it is was definitely worth having the original game in order to get the VR version for only 4,50 EUR. Good job. And by the way. Game is a lot of fun. It is a decent FPS with RPG elements. It takes a lot of good mechanics from other games and mixes them together. It's not this typical AAA title you might expect, but it definitely fun. GET IT FOR THE VR COUPON and also if you like CoD Zombies. Devs threat journalists to keep a positive review or they won't "send new game codes" to them. 10/10 would embarrass them by releasing their mails to media again.Show moreShow less
Please follow United Critics for quality reviews Dead Effect 2 Review Zombie Aren’t Really Scary After playing the prequel of this game, I had very low expectations for the second part. Surprisingly enough, the game managed to exceed my expectations. It isn’t that impressive but it’s entertaining. The base gameplay is pretty much the same plus the game is also Free-to-Play on mobile devices but paid for PC players. About This Game Storyline The game’s lore is a continuation from the first part. It sounds like those usual Sci-Fi space zombie kinda stories. I am going to add a spoiler tag since I will be mentioning the ending of the first part. After the demise of Dr. Wagner, soldiers from Earth have been sent aboard the ship to get rid of all the evidence of any “Zombie Outbreak”. The main aim is to purge all of Wagner’s failed test subjects & experience data. Will you be able to survive while following the orders you’re given? Not a really interesting storyline that’d keep you invested in the game for a long time. The gameplay is probably the only good part of the game! Gameplay Mechanics The gameplay is very similar to its prequel. The sad fact is that the game is very repetitive. You just have to do the same thing throughout the game. The quests usually involve you going & “fetching” something, be it some physical object or just information. The only thing that kinda changes is the environment but these missions get really stale almost immediately. Due to several negative factors, this just feels like just any other game in a crowded genre with nothing unique to make it stand out from the rest. So, before you start the game, you get to choose from three characters whereas the previous game had only 2. The characters are as follows: Gunnar Davis: A Lab-made cyborg kinda person who specializes in heavy weaponry. Jane Frey: A pretty attractive chick who mostly uses a shotgun. Kay Reyner: This guy is badass in both looks & style. He’s a huge “Melee-only” enthusiast. No, the weapons aren’t character-specific. Choosing a character just decides your starting primary & secondary weapons. You’re free to pick any other weapon up later in the game. I personally prefer the melee weapon in the starting as you can run out of ammo. On top of the ammo scarcity, melee weapons obviously make no noise. In this way, you can get silent kills without worrying about alerting the zombies nearby. So, I recommend having at least one melee weapon in your loadout. The stun glove thing makes a comeback in Dead Effect 2. Just like the first game, you can one-shot zombies with it. It sounds overpowered but they added a long ass cooldown time for it. That’s why melee weapons are a bit better since even they can one-shot enemies Idk if it’s the same in the higher difficulties, but in the lower ones, you can one-shot them. Anyways, let’s skip to the supposedly good part….Firearms. The accuracy is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I mean, since you can “upgrade” weapons due to the hint of RPG elements the game has. Upgrading to improve accuracy sounds reasonable but even if you fully upgrade the accuracy aspect, the gun is still inaccurate. Your shots go wide from where you’re aiming. They could’ve done better to give the game an actual FPS feel. Moving on, unlike the first game, you have 2 people who accompany you in this journey. The first person is Danette who is a clone made from some Lab Experiments. The second person is Minikin who is a pretty smart mechanic but suffers from a brain injury due to some ♥♥♥♥ up that happened during his cryostasis. There is also another doctor named Bielik who is the person that made Gunnar. But he communicates with you through a walkie talkie or something. Each character have a specific role in the game as follows: Danette assigns missions to us & offers upgrades for our player’s abilities. Minik offers weapon upgrades & also sells new weapons to us. Dr. Bielik offers upgrades to our player’s armour & new implants for Gunnar Davis. Visuals & Audio This is probably the most attractive part of this game. The visuals are actually decent. They’re pretty detailed. I didn’t expect stale gameplay from a game that has this type of visuals. The zombies look grotesque but attacks inflicted on them don’t have a really gorey effect. The only thing that gives us a gorey visual are the headshots. Lemme just tell you that the voice acting is low-key terrible. They fake the accents & it sounds so cringe, especially doctor Mielik. I have no clue on why they had to force accents when they could have just got people who can nail these accents to deliver the dialogues. I know it might add onto the cost but it is better than cringe voice lines. Pros Pretty decent character customization. The visuals are okay. The lighting is pretty good! The RPG elements are well implemented. The game isn’t short in content although it might be very repetitive. Cons Extremely repetitive gameplay. Weapons are very sluggish & boring. The dialogues are very cringe & horrible. Storyline is very boring. The game has no co-op mode. Conclusion I never really expected anything from this game but it did manage to surprise me with the addition of melee weapons which are pretty cool to use. The game is F2P on mobile devices but it’s paid for us. I recommend waiting for a sale to buy the game. Even if you don’t play the game, you’re not missing out on anything. This is a fun little indie co-op fps/rpg hybrid. There are many great aspects of this game, including smooth and satisfying combat, lots of loot, and several game modes to extend the life of the game. The feature that most impresses me with this game is that the maps and mobs therein are dynamically affected by the level of each player. So as a level 20, you can play a game with your level 2 friend, and the enemies will be level 20 to you while they are level 2 to your friend. Likewise, the drops are scaled for each player in the same manner. I really appreciate all the quality-of-life coding that went into this game. Here's hoping that the devs have a Dead Effect 3 in the works!Show moreShow less
Almost everything about this game is awful and I can't stop playing it. First, the voice acting is some of the worst I've heard in a video game. I only played one of three selectable main characters, but I doubt the other two are any better. The lines are all said with a strange combination of overacting and half-assed boredom. It appeals to me as a fan of terrible B movies and makes me laugh almost every time. One character, Minikin, only talks in third person, short caveman sentences and I'm pretty sure there was a giant penis outline on his shorts when I first met him. Then there's Dr. Bielik who just has this offensive, unplacable fake eastern european accent. It made me cringe at first, but grew on me the way a Stockholm Syndrome victim's captors might. The actual gameplay is miserable. It's a pretty bog-standard first person shooter set on a space station or ship or something. I didn't pay much attention to the horible story. You fight boring zombies and mutants and some military guys with guns. Everything feels slow, like the whole space station is filled with marmalade. There is a decent variety of weapons and special powers to use, but none of them really feel good. There are a lot of interactable things like panels to hack and valves to open or close, cabinets to kick open, all that kind of thing. The interface for all these reveals that this was meant to be a mobile game, and maybe it is? You get Diablo-style loot drops and you have cybernetic enhancements which are functionally the same as equipment, so there are a lot of slots to fill and upgrade. There doesn't seem to be much to it, though. Just a few basic stats. 12 hours in, and I've seen a couple small equipment sets, so maybe further in loot gets more interesting, but I seriously doubt it. Still it's just enough to keep me going into the next mission to try and get some upgrades. Weapons are also upgradable, though there isn't much choice involved. You just pay money to increase their damage or magazine size, accuracy, etc. You can slot some augments into them, but I haven't really seen anything interesting there either. Just accuracy or stability increases. Really, I have no idea why I keep playing this. After my first session, I thought "Horrible zombie bundle trash" and uninstalled. I kept thinking about that Minikin character and chuckling, though, and reinstalled. It must be the combination of laughable acting, and a just barely passable loot upgrade system that appeals to the dopamine system in my brain that's been broken by excessive ritalin prescriptions during my developing years. I can't recommend this game to any but the saddest, most broken people. And I keep playing it for some reason.Show moreShow less
Like the first game, Dead Effect 2 is a first person zombie shooter set aboard a large spaceship. It fails to shed the B-movie persona of its precursor, but believes it does, making the story-based campaign oddly unsatisfying. Gameplay is good, though, and cooperative campaign, online multiplayer modes and some decent weapons & armor leveling means there is quite a bit of fun to be had. A good effort by Badfly Interactive, but stops short of becoming a classic. Total size on my hard drive: 10.7 GBShow moreShow less
Some of the worst shooting mechanics I've ever experienced coupled with the cringiest voice acting money can buy. Honestly though, the biggest deal-breaker was their privacy policy. It is the MOST INTRUSIVE data mining scam "agreement" I have ever seen in a video game EVER. Ridiculous. BadFly Interactive is a massive crook, and not even a clever one. I feel the powerful urge to purge my PC after trying to play this. Blegh...Show moreShow less
Sequel to the Indie Sci-fi Shooter "Dead Effect", this new addition to the franchise delivers a successor that is superior in every aspect. Game Overview The game starts off with you given the option to choose among three different characters. These are Gunnar Davis (which is centered on heavy weapons), Jane Frey (which specializes in assault combat), and Kay Rayner (for those who prefer melee weapons). Each of these characters have their own "unique abilities" which you can improve on later in the game. There are different game modes (which you can access after progressing with the storyline), in which you can play by yourself or co-op with others. You can play through the storyline, which lets you unlock different shops later in the game to help you improve your character efficiency, or play through the other different modes which differs in goal on how to complete it. Every mission you play on every mode will yield you the credit points and other bonuses that you can spend and use at your own discretion. The Pros Large Item Selection - No doubt the most interesting part other of the game for me is the very large selection of items (weapons, armor, implants). Each of these items for use (expect for the bonus inventory items which are defaulted in 'legendary') are divided into specific tiers (common, regular, treasured, legendary, and mythical) and differs in effectiveness as well as the buying/selling price. Also, these items can also be upgraded to make them more efficient in the long run. Intelligent Enemy AI - This is the first thing that I noticed while playing the first few missions of the game. While the slowpoke zombies are still present, most of them can get "enraged" and rush towards you. Other types of enemies, the 'Cannibals' for example, can go in groups and go behind your field of vision instead of lining up in front of you. The 'Delta Soldiers' prefer staying away and hiding in covers while returning fire with their weapons and grenade from afar. Multiplayer Ready - Multiplayer/Co-op options are very welcome to every shooter as this gives the opportunity for the players to have fun with their friends/relatives, which contributes to the replayability and longevity of the game. Atmospheric Gameplay - The ambience that the game gives as a whole really captures what is needed for a horror shooter game. The soundtrack that plays during enemy encounters will make you either go rushing or very cautious while the graphics are greatly detailed in every aspect (the areas, enemies, weapons, etc.). The Cons Inaccurate Cross hairs - Noticed this early in the game since the first weapon you have will be a magnum pistol. Normally, I go for the head since it saves both time and ammunition but most of the time and even when you have directed the aim perfectly, the bullet still slips behind. While I am aware that this is normally attributed to the "gun accuracy" (which could be upgraded to the weapon once you have access to the shop), there still has to be a limit. No Cut scene Skip - There's plenty of cut scenes in the game (especially, in story mode) that you can't skip, which takes time if you already know the story or is uninterested. Players who are after the achievements will definitely replay these episodes for a number of times, and could be annoying to say at the least. While this is something that is almost trivial to consider as a downside (since they take less than a minute), an option should still be included in my opinion. The Verdict For the fans of zombie FPS in there, this is a must-try to say at the very least. And for those who loved the first Dead Effect, you really cannot go wrong in buying this game. To preface: This is not a complete game. It was wrapped up to technically be finished, but it isn't even close to complete due to not having an ending and Class B bugs that cripple the bulk of PC users while their Android version is performing well. (quick score: 7/10 Game engine makes it almost unplayable in how frustrating it is to deal with, but a good game if fixed) Pros: - The RPG elements of purchasing upgrades for guns and melee weapons were well done. They are roughly the same for each weapon (Damage, Accuracy, Sockets, Clip Size for guns, and reload speed for guns) with negatives for melee weapons. The socket upgrades for gear as well as weapons helped some of the lackluster items have a use. - It was nice seeing more scenarios for generic missions that don't relate to repeating the story missions for items or money. - The different mini-games were enjoyable and streamlined compared to the first game - The story was passable. I wasn't annoyed by the progression, nor with the voice acting. The plot twists were the only questionable pieces of the game, which I'll cover in the Con section as spoiler free as possible. - I liked the variety in upgrades for character abilities, though most aren't useful in the game since only two can be equipped, leaving Bullet Time and whatever else you like to be in constant use during fights. Cons: - The game isn't 20+ hours of gameplay. It is 7 hours with up to 8 hours of grinding generic missions for XP and gear to help complete story missions. - The ending doesn't even setup for a cliff-hanger. It idles out of gas half way up the cliff by fighting a bad guy's sidekick and stopping the game's story right there. (and even then, it is quite clear in the story, they both aren't bad guys at all) - The melee weapons get two upgrades when they could have supplemented melee with improved attack speed as an upgrade option amongst other melee focused upgrades. Was a missed opportunity. - Only two mission varieties: kill stuff, and rotate valve to stop gas from killing you. Some other options like King Of The Hill or Capture The Flag would have worked well and gave some other options for the side missions. - Almost all of the NPCs stop progressing in their story after about mission 6. When talking to a few of them, they gave bits and pieces of what they did on the ship as well as their current motivations and almost suddenly, stops for the rest of the game. Clearly was rushed. - The graphic engine is beyond broken. The system specs on the store page are not accurate and still are absurd considering this is an Android game built in Unity and ported to PC. My computer is above the minimum specs and gets 100-115 frames in the Hub and during every encounter drops to 45 to spurt back up to 100, regardless of my video settings. I have it at 800x600 and lowest video settings with shaders off and it still does that, but it is a little more consistent. When I played with the default settings, I was getting 4 frames a second during fights with more than 8 zombies. It makes the game unplayable if you want to not be frustrated during most of the game. - The frame stuttering caused by the game engine makes using melee weapons scary in their own right. - There is no way to circumvent fighting the invisible foes. Most one can do is engage Bullet Time when they appear or hopefully hit them as they rush you. It is the most annoying part of the game and I hate it every time they show up. They aren't challenging. ----------------------- Overall Verdict: 7/10 would not recommend to buy due to game engine making it almost unplayable. The rest of the game itself is a decent experience I would recommend for about $10.Show moreShow less
