Our Verdict
Deep Rock Galactic is a game that takes "small but mighty" to its limit. No grand narrative, no top-tier fidelity, and yet on the strength of one strange, sturdy core idea and a rare streak of operational honesty, it has become the most consistently beloved tier of co-op shooter in recent years. All told, I score it 8.5.
The numbers behind the long green line
The praise is not hot air; a chain of hard data props it up. An 85 on Metacritic, an 85 on OpenCritic landing it in the Mighty tier (recommended by 97% of critics, ranked in the top 5% of all games), and 97% positive across three hundred thousand Steam reviews. Whether you read the professional press or the player base, it stands in the front rank, and the two camps rarely agree this cleanly. Critics and players often pull in opposite directions; here they shake hands on the same verdict, which is usually the surest sign a game is doing something genuinely right rather than merely well-marketed.
More telling is the long tail. Sales climbed from two million units in 2021 to north of ten million today, and along the way it took home SXSW 2021's Indie Game of the Year and Excellence in Multiplayer. For a game that hit Early Access back in 2018 to keep that sales curve and that retention is something the legion of flash-in-the-pan co-op shooters can only dream about. It has also lived for years inside the major subscription line-ups, lowering the barrier for newcomers and rolling the snowball ever larger. Its quality, in other words, is not one good year — it is durability proven over and over by time.
Who should buy it, and who should walk past
So who is this actually for? If you have a regular crew, relish the teamwork that role-splitting creates, love the "just one more run" rhythm of a roguelite, and have a soft spot for the faintly decompressive pleasure of mining and digging, then Deep Rock Galactic is practically tailor-made for you — it will become the clubhouse you and your friends cannot put down.
Turn it around, though. If you only want to sit alone and live through a complete story, this game will let you down; it has almost none. If you are temperamentally allergic to running the same archetypes on repeat and demand a linear, one-and-done campaign from everything you play, its roguelite structure will not sit right with you either. Saying so plainly is fair to you and fair to the game. From a 2018 Early Access build, to a 2020 full release, to years of free Seasons since, Deep Rock spent six years turning "the evergreen co-op shooter" into an industry benchmark. It may not be the prettiest game on the shelf, nor the one that will ever move you to tears — but the instant four dwarves bellow "Rock and Stone!" together in the pitch black, packed shoulder to shoulder around a beleaguered resupply pod, you understand exactly why so many people keep choosing, run after run, to dig back down.

I was really looking forward to this game. It is unfortunately completely unplayable for someone with protan colorblindness. I was litereally stuck in tutorial, could not tell the difference between the gold and the walls. Friend could see it no problem, but I couldn't see it at all. Do not get this game if you are colorblind.Show moreShow less
Before I played Deep Rock Galactic, I had a small penis, no friends, no girlfriend, depression, and absolutely no life. These things haven't changed, but the game is pretty good.Show moreShow less
I requested a refund because the kick function is being abused: the host can kick any player, at any point in the game. What makes this worse is a playerbase intolerant to new players. You will get kicked for not playing like others want you to, without reason, warning, or actual useful advice for players still learning the game. There are also trolls who simply enjoy kicking you after 40 minutes before you can escape, making you lose all progress (XP and resources to buy upgrades) you've made during that session. The host that just kicked you benefits from all the work you've done. This is an extremely frustrating experience and damaging to the community. I may consider rebuying once the devs have this kick issue solved, because the game itself is pretty good. It has an addicting gameplay hook where you work together, making use of each class' unique abilities, to reach the missions objectives. There will be occasional horde waves that you have to defend against. -->> Updated: 4 March 2018 <<-- Thank you, Soren [dev] for acknowledging this issue and letting us know it's on your radar. I understand better now that it's challenging to find a fitting solution. At least "d) (compensation)" seems mandatory to me. I've suggested voting before, as others have, but I realise now that could end up replacing one problem with another problem. Maybe some kind of karma/reputation system could help. Like commending a player for being a good host. About my refund request; it was denied, because at the time of my request I already played 4.8 hours. It's all good though, I already fell in love with this game during a closed alpha weekend and realised then it has a lot of potential. I will continue to play the game, but only as a host from now on and see how it goes. At this time I still wouldn't recommend the game with the current kick system, but that could change as development progresses.Show moreShow less

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just, watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. loaded into the game, made my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. loved it as it was the best time had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.Show moreShow less
Please approve some kind of better global brightness control outside of sandbox to make it accessible for the visually impaired. I'm having a really hard time enjoying this with my friends due to extreme eye-strain making me physically ill and even then, barely being able to see.Show moreShow less
This game deserved Labor of Love.Show moreShow less
I'm confused as to why this game is overwhelmingly highly rated. It's definitely not a bad game, but I feel like the rating is misleading. I've only put 7 hours into it (including an hour of kicking barrels into a flying circle), and I eerily feel like I've put in at least 30. It's fun to hang out and mine with your friends for a few rounds, but it quickly gets repetitive and there wasn't enough of a grip from the leveling system to keep me coming back for more.Show moreShow less
