DELTARUNE's Chapter 5 is a difficult pill to swallow. Fresh off the release I made a review that brought to question if my faith was misplaced, and I were punished for believing. Now that feeling has subsided, yet not faded. Theme Nostalgia. Something you will become very familiar of. It doesn't help that chapter 3 already did it. 5 lacks a compelling story outside referencing/heckling beloved fan and official characters/theories of old. The execution is poor and transcribes to a series of jingling keys. In the pursuit of one last silly romp down memory lane, the chapter sacrifices far too much. Festival Every chapter is a countdown for this moment. Every chapter, it goes mentioned. All eyes are on the festival. Loose ends to be tied and Noelle is waiting for us, if 4 established the ordeal, the festival is poised to proceed. Here we have a 1 hour walk-n-talk where Kris, who loves Susie, pilots a date for Susie and Noelle. This makes 4 instances of cuckoldry triangles. I digress. There is dialogue about activities, but there are no activities. Games, unlimited games, but no games. When people tell me DELTARUNE is a game and not a book, I say look at the festival. Filler Going "From Now On" right into "Your Dad's Best Friend" is definitely not from now on. This chapter is undiluted filler. It's fine to have filler and take a break from the action, but we already did, it was chapter 3. 3 also progressed the story. 3, also, has commentary on nostalgia. 4, a serious chapter was able to have fun. So I ask; why can't 5 do the same? It's like if Undertale went from Hotland (3,) to CORE (4,) and when you're ready for the throwdown of New Home, you're back in Hotland (5.) Maybe 5 was meant to be before 4? But that's a just a theory. Setting Asgore possesses a CD of an anime, thus it is now Place, Japan. I don't follow. There were better options. You could have a noir themed world, from the conspiracy corkboard. A Germanic mountain from Bergentrückung. An urban world transformed by greenery, showcasing flowers taking place of Asgore's family. Japan has no meaning to the larger part of the story. I get Toby Fox likes Japan, but that doesn't shield the setting's weakness. FUN Gang Ralsei has been transformed into a ball of anger. He is mad at everything. But we've already had mad Ralsei in 2. We've also had intense Ralsei in 4. We see no additional side of Ralsei, and he loses the traits we love because he's too busy being mad at the final boss (and a mouse.) Gone is the lovably quirky tomboy Susie. Her character is that she loves Noelle. She also gets told about the game UI. It's dropped casually, and we do not dwell the major reveal. As for Noelle, she is my favorite character. To see the choirgirl with a curiosity in the risqué alternative lifestyle transform into a deviant with a corruption fetish, I joined the Dark Pact with the opposite purpose of protecting Susie from Noelle. Asgore The Asgore chapter has a suspiciously Asgore-shaped hole in it. We don't get growth in any facilities. Asgore (when present) continues to be vague about his event and contributes to the game as a red herring. The beloved King of Monsters, continues to be denied his glorious moment. It hurts to see Asgore be the punching bag of the series. Either he is a submissive failure being cucked from Toriel or a suicidal empathetic villain wanting to die to the player. I love Asgore and Toby loves to torment him. Gameplay The enemy variety is constricting. Floradinn and Sheary are or are themed around chapter 1 and majority fights in the feather are Aqua and Seth. It invokes a sense of emptiness, with few new interactions being had. The puzzles has taken a bow in exchange for platforming. The feather is a nice replacement, albeit underutilized. Combined it feels like a visual novel with intermittent gameplay sprinkled in. Final Boss and co. He says howdy, he goes Omega, he plays god, but this time he says quirky things. The theme is in a tug of war against the attempt to make a Flowey joke. When you remember Queen's stellar performance, or King being a fun take on imposing villains turned comic, or Tenna being a better representation for choking nostalgia; Flowery brings too little to the table. The other flowers suffer from quantity. With 7 to juggle, we only get to spend time with Aqua, Seth, Yellow, and Blue. While there's screentime with Green, lackluster communication relegates them to a shop NPC. Egg and Secret Boss If you recall the difficult chapter 3 egg's hint, then congratulations, take it and move on. On the notion of empty, secret boss. The role holds a mighty roster, Jevil, Spamton, SMantle, Gerson. After seeing Asgore possess a shard in 4, it was looking to be a rematch. I don't know if that was retconned, nothing comes out of that scene. A cameo character from the Nintendo Switch port of Undertale is in. Who enters masqueraded as a fan character, reveals to be MewMew, fights, leaves, and returns as she forgot to hand over the shard. I think the game forgot to hand over a secret boss. Ending The once mighty Mountain King and chief police is now a damsel in distress. Flowery gets demolished in the exact fashion Ralsei told him so. We then have a told-you-so moment. We were told the flowers are delicate, and can't relocate for fear of death. We then transplant a flower into the container of another, tape together Flowery, and put him into a different terrarium. Why can't we have them again? The 2nd code gets saved by a deus-ex-Susie, finally making up for when she talked to Kris without looking at them. 1 has a hostage, 2 has punch out, 3 has the Roaring Knight, 4 has the titan, 5 has anticlimax Side B After 4's harrowing show of Noelle's very soul being shattered by the player, I was dreadfully exited to see the payoff. Does Noelle freeze the garden in a fiery display? Break the game and use iceshock? Drown Kris and take the player with her? We begin with a strong start, the player forcefully moving an unconscious Kris is perpendicular of Undertale's genocide route. We then have yet another walk-n-talk through a skipped festival (lol.) Finally, we reach Noelle. Who is fine for someone who had her soul shatter. What's a Thorn Ring? Trance? The wavering voice is missing too. We instead have an obsessive, stereotypical yandere. The lake crossing was a well designed intense fight with the very game, this time together with our victim-turned-partner. We then hard cut to a CRT telling us to wait for chapter 7. Years of Side B, gone. I even saw people (friends included) coping that the aborted route will take wings on its own. It has 2 dialogues, 1 new, 1 altered. It's a modified neutral which is a modified pacifist. Identity Toby Foxes bread and butter is in oxymorons. Sans, omnipresent in internet culture, is named after a font and his voice is an isolated note from SpongeBob. He is also legendary for his rare serious dialogue and heart-breaking fight. Chapter 5 has the subtly of the Bergentrück after 7 beers. It's loud and blunt, having an identity crisis on what made Undertale and DELTARUNE so comedic and contemplating. Expectations If this were an independent game, I would've left satisfied. It's not, it's apart of a decades worth of works. The price of having your art plastered across the world is expectations. Free updates or not. Children have grown up to these. It's a pillar of culture. I spent 8th grade obsessing over "Hopes and Dreams" I spent highschool discovering Jevil. I'm invested, and it hurts to see a poor performance. Future Time will tell if the reveals were botched. Some I can see working out and some are objectively blunders. You cannot convince me MewMew, Asgore, and Flowery was done to that DELTARUNE standard (maybe Alphys Undernet standard.) Subjectively, I think it's pragmatic to redesign the chapter. I'm more than glad to wait for a good product. But it's a hope I will not be dreaming on. Instead, I hope 6&7 brings it back.Show moreShow less

I know its a unpopular opinion, but coming from someone who is a huge fan of deltarune, ch. 5 was such a let down. I'll probably change my review in the future as the last chapters come but man. This whole chapter felt like it led to absolutely nothing. I was suprised that the game continues to keep opening new questions without ever addressing old ones. If you took away this chapter, nothing would change. It's not like we get to see these characters in castle town or anything. Its the same Asgore being cryptic on his past. What is with this game setting itself up to leave the fans constantly theorizing it to death as a way to overcome the gaps in chapters?? Its getting exhausting at this point and I'm so suprised in how underwhelmed I am. Again! Might change my mind later. I'm just worried on how theres only 2 more chapters left and yet we are still left knowing next to nothing concrete. I can't imagine how casual players feel when playing to this point because it feels more like a game to make a fandom than an actual game first.Show moreShow less
Game is good but the 3 hour unskippable cutscene of Kris and Berdly making out was a bit unnecessary...Show moreShow less
I enjoy this game, I really do, but it's missing some needed QoL - You cannot modify settings for large swathes of the game, including the start - No separate sound settings, only one master channel. You cannot turn down the music, or the effects etcetera, without decreasing the volume of everything - Certain points of the game go excessive lengths without the ability to save, especially during chapter 3 Edited additions: - You cannot dictate the device used for audio; if you need to disconnect your earphones for whatever reason, you will need to fully restart the game in order to get audio back...Show moreShow less
