Many reviews have mentioned the scripted jump scares as being boring and repetitive. I agree with this, though something about them bothers me more. Each jump scare has different models and noises that don't relate to each other. Some will be children, masculine figures, feminine figures, old ones, babies, or giant heads that look laughable. It is just so all over the place that the ghost never feels like one cohesive entity. The voices you hear in jump scares or from the spirit box also never match. In a game like this, I want to be able to learn about the ghost I am hunting, not see so many different ghosts all over the house when there is actually just one that really exists and the others are all just part of the furniture. There are many aspects of Demonologist that are the exact same as Phas to a level that is not explainable other than copying. Just playing once, you will see it is set up exactly like Phas with only small changes. Focusing on ghost type similarities, Poltergeists in folklore are said to throw objects as one of their main traits, so it makes sense both Phas and Demonologist have this the same. However, there are many ghosts in Demonologist that do not have an excuse for copying directly from Phas. One example being the Thaye. Thaye is just Burmese for ghost, and I could never find any indication of a link with aging in folklore, so I am certain the Phas devs created that unique aspect for the Thaye. Demonologist having the same information that a Thaye ages proves that it is not a coincidence and simply a blatant copy. There are many more examples and an unsettling amount of ghosts that also appear in Phas. Speaking of "Ghosts", the game is called Demonologist but refers to the creatures as "ghosts" in game. There are specific demon names in the types as well, but also just a type called DEMON, so there is a serious lack of logic and originality in the "ghost" types as well. I love the look of the old equipment and how everything else in game seems set back in time...until we pull out our tablet. The tablet is so out of place and ruins the older style of everything else. The tablet is also pulled out with "J" which makes no sense until you consider that in Phas, "J" is the default key for the "Journal". It feels as if Demonologist chose to make it a tablet only to differentiate itself a little from Phas but still left the keybind as "J" instead of making it "T" for tablet or anything else. It would be better off as a journal or something else not of a new technology to fit with the other equipment. Something that struck me immediately as a red flag when first looking at the Steam page is the claim of "The best graphics in the co-op horror genre you'll ever play". The game looks nice, but claiming to be the best in that way is just embarrassing and egotistical. Even the last time I played, we had graphic glitches, and it is clearly not revolutionary enough to make such a statement that also implies no better graphics can exist in the genre in the future. I understand the game is in early access; most games I play on Steam are in early access. Most of my concerns with Demonologist are very core elements and are unlikely to be fixed, which is why I will be refunding and advising against this game. When dev teams take care in creating the game and updating it, even early access games can be amazing right away. This leads to a large concern with the developer. In October 2021, less than a year and a half ago, Demonologists developer released Haunt Chaser. If you look at the recent reviews for that game, you will see that they are all negative, reviews about the game being abandoned quickly and the devs being scummy. When the inexplicable hype dies down for this game the same will likely happen.Show moreShow less

This game was fun for a few hours. However, there are bugs that shouldn't exist in a full release game, such as having to recreate the lobby every time you finish a game, and a footpath that pings you around as you traverse it on the Bedlam Asylum map. The game has many missing features that other games of the same genre already have, like saving a difficulty preset, auto buying lost equipment and daily/ weekly tasks (these are promised on the store page, I do not see any trace of them in game). The gameplay is fun for the first couple of exorcisms, after that it becomes stale. The jump scares are scripted, the ghosts are not difficult to guess as the abilities they use are not rare, even the difficulty modifiers don't make the game hard. Having custom modifiers to make the game as hard as possible just made it easier to get enough money and xp for everything as there was still no challenge, just inflated rewards. Visually the game is deceiving it's portrayed on the store page to be stunning and immersive, although that is not the case. After playing the first few maps which I did enjoy, I reached the hospital map, I generally enjoy the larger, creepier maps in these games so I was quite excited, except walking around the decor was lazy, things placed in areas they don't belong, other items copy pasted as clutter and it hit me that the game is an Unreal engine asset flip. The hospital map can be found as a full free map on the unreal engine asset library, almost everything in the game is from a free asset pack. It's very poorly developed overall, nothing is polished just copy pasted and sold as a game. After the realisation the only reason to play was to get 100% achievements so I can uninstall it.Show moreShow less

At this stage in the game there only a couple of things that stand out. The Graphics being one, there of a few scripted jump scares but once you've seen them you know they will happen nearly every time so they aren't totally "random". A large majority of the ghosts are the same you would find in Phasmophobia only they shuffled the ghost type/abilities around. The equipment looks different however still acts the same as Phasmo so if you are familiar with the game you'll not have any problems adapting to the game. I do REALLY like the ecto evidence aspect and how it's found. The fact you can Exercise the ghost is a great addition and a fun mini aspect to the ghost hunting. The major draw backs i see are it's VERY repetitive, you do the exact same thing on every map. The objectives do not change, so you will always have the same ones assigned to the map you are on. Hopefully this changes down the road. The amount hunting tools cost is ridiculously high, especially when you can get three pair of jeans for your look yet only get 1 candle. The use/repurchase costs for things like sanity pills and crosses is WAY to high for one time usage. It will require you to grind the first map 10-15 times getting the correct ghost type each time to get some of the more helpful equipment such as a camera, video camera, and candles, in order to get the other objectives and be able to exorcise the ghost. Ie. it is $1400 for a camera required for a ghost photo, successful run without being able to do objectives early on is $600 IF you get the ghost type correct, if you do not you get 0$. Candles cost you $600 each. In summary; Way too much grind of the same exact thing over and over to possibly have unsuccessful runs earning you 0$. You lose your equipment on death with a minor "insurance" return like in Phasmobhobia.Making death even harder on you in the beginning. Current state of the game it needs more than just graphics and one or two unique features to stand out. If they can adjust the currency rate for buying items and add a bit more variety i believe this game can possibly even rival Phasmo. However currently Phasmo has more meat and change in each game play through. Making Demonologist very boring and repetitive for those that are used to Phasmo. I cannot recommend Demonologist for purchase in it's current state. Let them add more content and expand on their game some first.Show moreShow less

Game's great and they update it and pay close attention to it while listening to their community seriously. Pretty sure every dev involved is the coolest person you'll ever meet. So why the thumbs down? Here's the main issue: all the scares and effects are map oriented. The maps are linear progression, grinding out one map to move on to the next one. The ghost type doesn't really change what happens for your hauntings. Fireplace will light up, painting pops out, you mostly have seen all the coded jumpscares specifically tailored to a map by the third time you do it which is what makes the replayability of Phasmo far superior to here. In Phasmo, the maps just a map and what happens on it is completely dependent on what ghost you are after. Demonologist feels like going on the same haunted house ride multiple times and trying to get pleasure out of something you didn't catch the first or second time. You'll find your next sessions are basically the same with ghost variations not meaning much and limited equipment being niche. This makes early game pretty difficult when a lot of equipment is a must but expensive to obtain, and the niche necessity of your Ectoglass, temp reader, and all the rest means your playthroughs start to feel basically the same every time. Variety and tactic is key to these games but walking around until either your thermometer or Cockroach board goes off is a little less than stale. It's fun, especially the first time you do a map when it all feels so new, but it's also incredibly poor design and I feel bad the game is forcing me to repetitively do it's one map for hours so I can do the same thing for the second map, almost to the point of hating it, just so I can grind several times the third map so that, one day when it comes out, I can do the fourth map. All of these which basically play essentially the same way with limitations in the actual sense of gameplay. Maps are locked by a leveling system, so I don't have a choice but to keep playing the same map for more which there is not a lot of. Too much emphasis, in short, is based on the haunted locations instead of in other aspects of the game which isn't good no matter how detailed and amazing the few maps are. It encourages me to stare at their passionate hard work until I find it dull, cramped, and begin to hate it. If they find a means to change this sort of gameplay loop, I'll happily change it from a thumbs down. Currently, however, the philosophical design of the entertainment aspect is mostly repetition which was more than half my gameplay hours however meager my time may appear. The graphics are actually very pretty, the atmosphere and lighting is amazing, and sound design create a catatonic and terrifying experience by ambiance alone. Yet, even the best horror movies I can only enjoy on my first watch or atleast occasionally rewatch on a blue moon with friends and popcorn. ((Edit: 11/22/2024: It's been over a year since this review was written. I still feel a majority of my criticisms are just as valuable as they were then. Haunts and missions are map oriented and hardly ghost oriented. This means each time, the scare factor is always the same and hardly does the personality of the ghost change this. This is the core problem of the game, especially one that relies so heavily on you grinding the playthroughs of maps for more maps. I metaphorically compared this to movies and amusement park rides because once you've done each map once, that will be your same experience almost every single time doing the map without much deviation and the choice to make pieces of the map which procs a scripted scare under conditions in the same way is questionable. Once you see the fireplace suddenly erupt in flames, the painting shake and fall, or anything else of that nature, you start to realize the game is designed like a Haunted House ride but with various puzzles to "solve" the map. There is not a lot of long term playability in that and I was able to tire out the core playability out with half my total hours. Which, as you can see, was not a lot.))Show moreShow less
I’m glad there’s a single player option, as I am more terrified of human interaction than any demon or ghost. 👍Show moreShow less
It's tough to say, while I'm having fun with this, it looks great, and it feels different enough from Phas in pure scare factor, there's two issues i have. Use of AI art for a lot of 2D art & A ridiculous amount of UE Asset Store Use. In just a quick 2 minutes you could build a level from this game, in fact that's what the devs did. Hospital is a store bought map, the character controller and customizer is actually a store bought asset called CharacterCustomizer, all the ghost models are bought, in fact if it isn't bought, it's megascans or AI. Makes me wonder that the Devs actually did, aside from bring it all together. I appreciate that it all works nicely, and it's fun. But I feel it's dishonest to charge this much for an asset flip. At the very least Show some competence and make something OG. List of Store Assets Below: Banshee by Dary Palasky (paid) Character Customizer by mlindborg (paid) Realistic Starter VFX Pack by FX Cat UA (free) tropical Ocean Tool by James Stone (paid) Ultra Dynamic Sky by Everett Gunther (paid) Abandoned Irish Pub by Hellcat Studios (paid) Chameleon Post Process by SUMFX (free) Explorers Kit by Edward Hanley (paid) Abandoned Mansion by Krystian Zem (paid) Horror & Forest Collection by Game-Ready (paid) HQ Retro Farmhouse by NOTLonely (paid) Interactive Lights by MrKatrina (paid) Resistance Holdout by Dekogon Studios (paid) Ships Graveyard by Volodymr Stepaniuk (paid) The Old Room by Crimsonred1980 (paid) Ghost Asian Female by leshiy3d (paid) Baby Demon by EksisMP (paid) ((potentially his Evil Demon Pack instead - too lazy to check) Fat Demon by AizenHarribel (rough guess.)(paid) Apocalyptic Hospital by Meshingun Studio (paid) Lighthouse by GeorgeShachnev (paid) & Then about 4000 megascans. There's a lot of assets not in use currently, but are in the project. Could hint at future content, but considering next area is a Japan themed map, I couldnt see any assets related to that being loaded by UE5. Either way, spend carefully. EDIT: Lemme iterate, there are other issues but it's so early on that it's fine. The reason having almost all unoriginal assets is an issue, as some people won't coin it an asset flip, is that many things aren't as likely to get fixed, and ongoing support isn't as likely. Buying assets is okay, especially to fill gaps a studio can't work through, however if your entire game is unoriginal assets I can't trust that you';; ever update with original content, or add anything new or of substance. The assets they've used are good quality for the most part, but keep in mind the jank and problems of stitching these assets together, like the player controller / customizer that's bare-bones as it's designed to be changed to the games specific requirements. If a restaurant was serving you frozen burgers and chips from woolworths for double the price I'm sure you'd never go there again. If they used some premade stuff but added enough of their own flare to make up for that and it was still good you'd go again. Simply put, the team needs to prove themselves that they're not just trying to make a quick buck. The game has potential, it's just worth reading between the lines.Show moreShow less
