“A role-playing definitive cut where twenty-four inner voices talk back, winning narrative of the year with no combat at all”
Our Verdict
Stack the six dimensions together and the full picture sharpens: Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a role-playing game that uses prose itself as the mechanic, a narrative peak no one has climbed past.
A milestone that redrew the genre's borders
Arriving in 2019, this game is widely read as a landmark for CRPGs and the role-playing genre at large. The trophy wall is absurd — Best Narrative, Best Independent Game, Best Role Playing Game, and Fresh Indie Game at The Game Awards 2019, plus BAFTA wins for Debut Game, Music, and Narrative, and Game of the Year nods from PC Gamer and others. The throughline is simple: it redrew what an RPG could be, and the industry took notes. Before it, the idea of a combat-free, near-all-reading game topping the year-end charts was hard to picture; after it, "narrative-driven" became a direction the whole indie scene keeps saluting, and countless smaller studios trace a line of inspiration straight back to Martinaise. A 97 on Metacritic, an 89 on OpenCritic, and a 92 percent Steam approval back the height from every side — from professional critics to the raw vote of players. For a game with no combat at all, held up almost entirely by text, that combination of scores is close to a miracle, the kind of result that should not be reproducible and so far has not been.
Who it is for, and who should think twice
So who is it for? If you will linger over a fine sentence and you prize narrative density and the weight of a choice over the thrill of action, this is practically tailored to you, and it repays every ounce of patience with a city, a cast, and a detective stitching himself back together. If you want instant combat feedback, tight handling, or simply have no appetite for long stretches of dialogue, this near-"playable novel" will likely leave you cold — no judgement, just taste, and forcing yourself through a game that fights your grain serves nobody. One more honest note: the subject matter skews adult, the narrative wades into heavy, serious social and human themes, and the tone runs cold and introspective throughout. It suits a mature player willing to settle in and think, to read carefully and sit with discomfort, rather than someone after a quick unwind at the end of a long day. This is a work to be absorbed, not a toy to be idly poked, and going in with the right expectations is half the battle.
Edition, platform, and why nothing has replaced it
On editions, The Final Cut is the only and most complete choice going — a free upgrade for original owners, with full voice acting and the four political vision quests, and no real reason to seek the old build. On platforms, since the core interaction was born for a mouse, PC stays the smoothest pick; the console versions are content-identical, with only that cursor-on-a-controller adjustment to make.
Which leaves the deepest question: after all these years, why is there still no second Disco Elysium? Because it pulled off something nobody else has — it made prose the mechanic. The twenty-four voices arguing in your skull, the Thought Cabinet you keep researching, the rolls that decide who you become rather than whether you live, together make a role-playing experience that stands alone. It did not refine an existing frame; it opened a new lane and remains its only benchmark. Baldur's Gate 3 has flashier combat and a bigger branch, yet it never wrote the hero's interior as speaking characters, and the imitators that followed mostly caught the surface, not the fusion of word and system. That is why nothing has replaced it — and why it stands as proof of how deep the game can reach as a storytelling medium.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. This is one of the best RPGs ever made, but its original writer, director and artist were kicked off ZA/UM by external shareholders driven by greed. You can find and play the game through other means. Go do it.Show moreShow less
It's the best game I've ever played. I love it. Everything is amazing there from OST to the story... BUT! Do not sponsor ZA/UM corporates. Do not buy the game, do not buy ZA/UM's merch, clothes in their atelier, anything! Not a single euro cent should go to their greedy hands. You can easily find the information about the atrocious situation how one crook stole ZA/UM from original creators. Compus must pay dearly for what he did to Kurvitz, Rostov, Hindpere and others. The art must prevail here, not the money. Little edit: Thank you everybody for thumbs up and points! I hope that I approached our victory with this small effortShow moreShow less
LOGIC - Disco Elysium has overwhelmingly positive reviews. It's probably a masterpiece. ENCYCLOPEDIA - The game was originally called "No Truce With The Furies" and has been developed by ZA/UM studio. Zaumism was a movement primarily involved in visual arts, literature, poetry, art manifestoes, art theory, theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti war politic through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Zaum activities included public gatherings, demonstrations, and publications. The movement influenced later styles, Avant-garde and downtown music movements, and groups including surrealism, nouveau réalisme, Pop Art and Fluxus. RETHORIC - You fight with words. Words fight with you. DRAMA - You have to play this game before you die, not after. CONCEPTUALIZATION - You will have to internally conceptualize your life sooner or later. ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY - If you do drugs in real life you will immediately know how to play the game. No tutorial needed. HAND-EYE COORDINATION - You can start touching yourself while reading this. It's my pleasure. VISUAL CALCULUS - You can see the game is only available in English right now. AUTHORITY - Yes, it's time to learn the dominant language of your world. What are you still doing here? You can't even understand what you're reading. MOVE! PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT - Oh, and there's no controller support at the moment. ♥♥♥♥ that! EMPATHY - I've been playing Disco Elysium for over 50 hours (first run), but I want to play more, please. PAIN THRESHOLD - They should make a medical condition for everytime you finish a game. It's painful to live after. HALF LIGHT - No, stop the depression right now! Slap yourself. INLAND EMPIRE - This review is being written for you, non-existent steam users, fragile as your internet connection. VOLITION - It's a lie. I'm reviewing it for myself. I don't care about you. COMPOSURE - Don't listen to him. That's not what he meant. I hope this review was helpful to you and please, remember to click on that "Yes" button at the end of the review. ESPRIT DE CORPS - Look, to be honest... you don't need helpful reviews. You're already good at understanding which game is good and which one is bad. You're the best consumer your gaming library will ever have. PERCEPTION - Oh yes babe, this is the right one! SUGGESTION - I know, spending money sucks. It sucks for everyone. But this game is worth every penny. Trust me. ENDURANCE - By the way, how long will you resist the urge to play this game? And just for that tiny, useless discount you're still waiting. INTERFACING - To buy Disco Elysium, click on "Add to Cart" and then on "Purchase for myself". Insert your payment info and you're ready to go. SHIVERS - Say goodbye to your friends and family. Once you start it, there's no coming back. SAVOIR FAIRE - You see? I can be very persuasive, so maybe I can still convince you to click on that famous "Yes" button. REACTION SPEED - Click that YES button, NOW! (it's so close, you can do it).Show moreShow less
While the Game itself is Good, the Company of ZA/UM is a disgusting Shell that has forced out the lead creatives of this IP due to unbridled Greed. The Company in its infinite wisdom forced out Its lead writer and creator of the world Robert Kurvitz, effectively stealing his creation from him.Show moreShow less
The greatest RPG of all time stolen by con artists releasing a meme update so that when you Google the game you don't see the headlines talking about how they stole it. quoting from u/KermitTClog from the Disco Elysium Reddit, which can be found here https://www.reddit.com/r/DiscoElysium/comments/11tvv9f/whats_the_big_deal_its_just_a_photo_mode_a_short/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 I saw a decent amount of comments on my last post about how the fans are overreacting when it comes to this photo mode, and I believe that this stems from a general confusion of why we're so against ZAUM, so I wanted to once and for all type up exactly what's been happening, from the beginning, especially given recent developments. Because I believe that ZAUM has worked to make this intentionally muddled when it's honestly as clear cut as can be. Keep in mind that I am more than a little biased and please tell me if I get anything wrong or leave out important details so I can correct them. It started in October of 2022 when Martin Luiga made a medium post(1) saying the ZAUM cultural association had dissolved. This association is where the ZAUM company was born from, and in that article he makes it clear that neither he, Robert Kurvitz (Lead Writer), Aleksander Rostov (Lead Artist), and Helen Hindpere (writer) are working at ZAUM, and implies they left unwillingly. The next day the claim that they no longer work there is followed up with confirmation by Rostov(2). As of that point in the timeline this was the only statement ZAUM had made on the matter(3). People weren't happy. Rostov makes his own comprehensive statement on Medium(4), giving everyone more detail on the situation. The current majority shareholder and investors of ZAUM fired them unfairly. They believe that they were being intentionally shut out once their old majority shareholder was bought out, as they had begun to get excluded from daily company operations. What's important is Rostov and Kurvitz believe that the two new majority shareholders in ZAUM, Ilmar Kompus and Tõnis Haavel, had obtained their majority share illegally. They did this by buying a majority stake with ZAUM’s own funds, which surprise surprise, is illegal. Kurvitz and Rostov claimed they were fired after asking for financial documents. In response, ZAUM claimed that actually Kurvitz and Rostov and Hindpere were all fired for misconduct. Specifically, they were fired for(5): ● Limited to no engagement in their responsibilities and work – including not working at all for almost two years while still being paid by the studio – and forcing colleagues to compensate for their lack of effort. ● Creating a toxic work environment that is antithetical to the ZA/UM culture and team productivity. ● Misconduct in interacting with other colleagues that includes verbal abuse and gender discrimination. ● Attempts to illegally sell to other gaming companies ZA/UM’s intellectual property with the aim of undermining the rest of the team. Obviously they deny all of these claims, but you should read the whole article on this one, it's so clear that they're lying it's almost funny. Rostov and Kurvitz made it clear they are intending to pursue legal action for both the fraud and the unfair termination. This is where things get confusing and most fans fall off, I believe this is a result of Kurvitz and Rostov’s general lack of communication with the public due to ongoing litigation combined with ZAUM’s lame attempts to spin the story in their direction. Karl Kender, who also left ZAUM in August, had filed a suit against Kompus specifically, stating that he believed they cheated him out of millions(6). This was quickly withdrawn, however with the withdrawn lawsuit, Kompus and Haavel quietly repaid 5.1 million dollars to ZAUM (not admitting that they stole it). This left us all confused as we didn’t know exactly what was happening in regards to Kurvitz’s game. This exchange was the last real information we got until Tuesday, in which ZAUM suddenly released a statement saying that it was all over. Kender had repaid all the debts he owed to the company (while never directly admitting he stole them). This left everyone in a weird limbo, as we had no idea what would happen from here. All we knew was that Kurvitz’s suit was still ongoing. We get no word until this Tuesday, March 14. ZAUM out of the blue claims that everything is now resolved(7). They said that the unfair termination suit by Kurvitz and Rostov was dropped due to lack of evidence, and that Kompus had paid the money back in full, and Kender had paid Kompus for all legal fees for his withdrawn suit back in December, resolving the situation. It’s important here to talk about the news cycle. It’s generally important to a company that searching their name on google doesn't bring up hundreds of articles about how fraudulent they are, so for a few days, searches of their name were good for the first time. “Disco Elysium suit resolved, situation over” This lasted all of two days, because yesterday on March 16th, Kurvitz and Rostov responded to that claim(8), saying that no they had not withdrawn the suit, and returning stolen money doesn’t fix anything, since he Still committed the damn crime Still has majority stake in the company This, is when collage mode drops(9). On the exact same day Kurvitz and Rostov respond. Almost as if to lead away a google search for something like “Disco Elysium news” or “Disco Elysium update.” To be literally anything but the fact that they just unabashedly lied to the public. I think the feature is a gross misunderstanding of what DE is about and its general philosophy, but this aspect is what enrages me. It's not "just a photo mode" it's a lame diversion tactic, and what saddens me is that it seems to be working. So please, don't let it. This ended up being way longer than I thought (so much for short recap), but I might as well close things off with talking about why Kurvitz can’t walk away. People were obsessed with DE for its amazing writing, so why can’t Kurvitz just make Pissco Pelysium 2 and keep going. Because he doesn’t want to write anything but stories in the world he has been crafting for 30 years. Elysium. I can’t explain just how much it means to him better than he can, so I urge you to please read this statement he made to celebrate the final cut release of the game, before it was taken from him(10). This story is only going to get more muddled, so please keep following it. I urge all of you to read every article I linked in full, it's a sad story. But they're still fighting, and I believe they'll come out on top in the end. All we can do for now is wait, but let's not forget why we're angry in the meantime. 1) https://medium.com/@martinluiga/the-dissolution-of-the-za-um-cultural-association-779788390a03 2)https://twitter.com/artofrostov/status/1576539500012240897?s=20 3)https://www.instagram.com/p/CjQmqSfqdIq/ 4)https://medium.com/@artofrostov/to-fans-of-disco-elysium-concerning-the-situation-at-za-um-3e6bc46ea9c 5)https://www.gamesindustry.biz/disco-elysium-studio-zaum-confirms-former-employees-were-fired-for-misconduct 6)https://www.gamesindustry.biz/lawsuit-against-zaum-majority-shareholder-withdrawn 7)https://www.gamesindustry.biz/zaum-resolves-legal-dispute-with-disco-elysium-producer-kaur-kender 8)https://www.gamesindustry.biz/zaum-resolves-legal-dispute-with-disco-elysium-producer-kaur-kender (Check the top of the article) 9)https://twitter.com/discoelysium/status/1636383558779682819 10)https://imgur.com/a/lb3i7J5 arguably the most important link here :revolutionaryhat:Show moreShow less
This game is the closest thing to perfect a game can get for me. I had 80 hours on gog before i ever beat the game because i kept restarting to try new things. It never got old and i was always finding new paths i never even considered. There is nothing like Disco Elysium. Too bad the publishers became the very thing this game critiques and gutted the developers for money. I Hope Your tone deaf Amazon tv show crashes and burns. Support the actual devs on their new solo projects like Tangerine AntarcticShow moreShow less
When Elysium becomes Inferno In my opinion the world of Elysium is beautiful , but I have something to say in view of the recent events related to the za\um company. Lead developers and authours of the whole setting, Kurvitz, Rostov, Hindpere and Luiga were pushed out from company in a last year. All this time the regular people who didn't know about the inside troubles still thought, that they're working on the DE2. But this fact was hidden from all, and right now za\um trying to convince us all, that everything is fine, while actually they literally deprived the studio and future projects of HEART and SOUL without which za\um cannot be za\um and moreover, they are trying to impose on us a controversy that the contribution of all is equal and important. But not in that case. Robert Kurvitz, Rostov and other people from his team are the AUTHORS, in whose heads the world of Elysium was born. It is their merit that we were able to get acquainted with this world, while Kender simply threw them out of the company, which he financed illegally and, having gained popularity and the trust of the audience, only hopes to make a profit, not caring about the further fate of Kurvitz and Elysium. I urge you to look for information on reddit, on twitter, to spread what happened among Disco fans and not to believe the promises that the sequel will be released anyway, one way or another, by the hands of the za\um studio. It is no longer those za\um that gave us the deepest world and touching history. There will be no continuation of Disco without a heart, soul and people who cared about their project. Don't trust the attempts of Kender and za\um to whitewash their reputation.Show moreShow less
This game is incredible. Life-changing. Absolutely a 11/10 experience. The original devs do not make money from this game anymore as they were cut from the company, all of them. They have said that they don't want people to buy their game. If you still want to play it you can find it if you really look. Just don't support ZA/UM.Show moreShow less
DON'T BUY THIS GAME! This is one of the best games I've ever played. It is quite possibly the best and most detailed Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novel ever written and if you buy it now the creators will receive *NO COMPENSATION* for their work. I am thankful i bought it when I did, while they were still involved, but due to contracting and political differences (ironically fitting for the content of the game) the 2 or 3 writers who pioneered this project were cut out and can't receive royalties anymore. This is a game about the inherent flaws in dogmatic political ideologies, all ideologies including centrism and being a moderate, and it was essentially stolen by capitalists. I love this game with all my heart. It is a beautiful story about loss, depression, and finding meaning in a chaotic and absurd reality. Anything more is kinda spoilery so I'm gonna stop myself there. It is all narrated so you dont have to read the enormous amount of text on your own and it is HILARIOUS. Depressing at times but always that spark of humor lingers. DON'T BUY THIS GAME. And *DEFINITELY* don't *PIRATE THIS GAME*. Even though it is totally in line with the messaging of the game, would be a HUGE middle finger to the corporation that cut the writers out of their own creation, and is super easy to do with like an an hour of searching Reddit or something, *YOU SHOULD* not *PIRATE THIS OUTSTANDING GAME*. Thank you for reading this, I hope you do the right thing, and you should totally hit on that girl at the beginning she is super into you and there will be no repercussions. Peace.Show moreShow less
As many have said before. DO NOT BUY this game even if they sell it for a dime. A group of investors(parasites) screwed the minds behind this game, so what you pay for this game is not gonna go to their rightfull owners.Show moreShow less
