Forgettable and uninteresting. Definitely not worth the price, wait 'till a sale. 5 missions; 2 of which are played on the same 'map', a 3rd which is The Royal Conservatory from Dishonored 2, 4th being a relatively small mission and only one actually good-sized 5th map. And the thing is even then that barely annoys me when compared to the other things I'm about to list in this review. Like Daud's nonsensical hatred towards the Outsider, which gets so annoying to the point you'll hope he'll shut up (until you realise it's the only thing he does in the game). If do you like great potential being wasted however (or what I like to like to call whole-lot-of-one-thing bloated in your face) then you'll love all of the different cults! There's the brand-new-Eyeless gang (discount Bottle street gang), then the good-old Outsiders who have brought their blind sisters along for the party (because you can't have enough cults!), then there's another cult who they didn't even bother to name because there are so many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cults and then to round it all up you got another group of the same cult but 'transformed' into the badass-looking void monster thingys. Now, they were one of the things I was most excited about (props to whoever designed them they're friggin wicked), but their potential is completely wasted, more so than Daud & The Outsider, as we see these 'monsters' for all of 15~ minutes and you can sneak past them if you're too lazy* to fight 'em. Like they literally pose no threat to you if you've learnt how to use your Void powers - which shouldn't be too hard since you only get 3 powers in the entire ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game! - and sneak past them (which can hardly be defined as sneaking anyway) onto the Outsider. Then there's the poorly written Billie Lurk who's voice actor doesn't do her any favours and sounds completely flat and uninteresting. Oh and how dare I forget The Outsider, he's what this game is all about! The god who seems to be getting weaker and less interesting in every iteration of Dishonored. Remember him? He was awesome in the first Dishonored and not as bad as I was expecting with his new VA in the 2nd! Yup, they made him forgettable and uninteresting too. I was rather hoping he'd maybe taunt Billie & Daud or something, or do pretty much anything in the game - like literally anything - but nope, he has a handful of cutscenes, he comments when you inspect these Bioshock-like tears on posters and statue(s) around the world but that's about it. For a game that's centred around killing a friggin god, everything seems rather unnecessary and boring when the main reason you want to kill him is actually Daud's (and not forgetting all this hatred seemed to have started when he willingly killed the Empress), you as a player have grown an attachment to him(?) and don't want him dead and you're never really given a reason that sticks out to you why you should kill him. But hey, look on the bright side, (minor spoiler, it's really not that bad but just putting it here so I don't get shouted at) he has really nice eyes in the end cutscene! Now don't get me wrong, huge Dishonoured fan here. over 140+ hours accumulated in both games and I even got a couple physical-♥♥♥♥ from Dishonored too. I'm loving the new 'Void Power' system and the powers you get, contracts were pretty cool too (even though they felt like the 'completely-optional-things-you-could-already-do-in-the-games-that-were-out-of-your-way-but-they-now-have-a-name-and-are-at-a-slightly-higher-frequency'). The gameplay itself is still fun as well, It's just extremely debatable whether the quantity & quality of the game equals the price and I've focused on the negatives deliberately, however none of this stops the game from being a hugely disappointing and anti-climatic end to the Kaldrin-era of Dishonored. The story began 5 years ago to Corvo staring up at Dunwall, now it ends with Bille literally looking at a seemingly-bottomless pit. Very disappointing. They didn't even mention Corvo, if he became the Duke or not etc. Someone should probably make a review with this simple sentence: Buy The Knife of Dunwall & The Brigmore Witches instead. Note: Almost forgot to note that performance is fine-ish, in fact, It seemed that the game was running a little better than Dishonored 2 (post-patches) ever will. (Please remember performance will vary depending on your specs) Note(2): I wanted to focus on the negatives of the game I guess and in some cases, I am comparing it to the other two Dishonored games (which are very worthy of the awards they won) Note(3): In case anybody else gets their pants all ruffled up, in the map which gets re-used for 'The Bank Job' (mission 3), the 'bank-section' of the map is bigger than it was in the first iteration (mission 2). Unfortunately, that's the only change to the map, excluding some trivial things like a new 'security' system to the Blackmarket shop etc. *By 'you can sneak past them if you're too lazy' I meant lazy when compared to going all high chaos on their asses in that specific part of the game, not the entire franchise. And even then, if you've played the part I'm talking about you'd know it doesn't exactly take a lot of effort to sneak past the void-monster-thingys. The designers made it very easy to use Displace and sneak past.Show moreShow less
Everything is pretty much the same like the original Dishonored 2. Whatever your performance is for Dishonored 2, same goes here. Gameplay wise, mana is now regenerated to full over time, no more drinks needed. Special actions in the original game are now some contract missions you get in the black market. You will only get 3 new unique powers that doesn't need to be upgraded, and 3 of Emliy's and Corvo's powers in OG+ mode. Mixed reviews are casued by some angry Chinese players who can't launch the game because their system language is not set to English xddddd (release day).Show moreShow less
I really hate how they wrote the Outsider in this game. The Outsider was one of the strongest characters in the first game and knife of dunwall. In Dishonored 2, they changed his appearance and voice actor, and his writing felt weaker. In Death of the Outsider, he was just plain uninteresting. Which pretty much sums up this whole dlc. Not offensive, but nothing particularly memorable. Get Knife of Dunwall instead.Show moreShow less
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Excellence stripped down to the bone - and without the charm. Introduction Death of the Outsider is what you get when you craft a delicious sandwich; but then remove the meat and condiments. Sure, the bread, cheese, and lettuce that are left may be quality ingredients, but without the sauce and meat you're not getting all that much flavor or sustenance. And while you're eating that sandwich, all you can think about is how much better it would be with a bit of ham and mustard. This analogy isn't all-encompassing; but hopefully you're not a vegetarian and you understand what I'm getting at. Plot Initially, DotO seems to have a solid premise. You play as Meagan Foster, otherwise known as Billie Lurk. She was Daud's protégée in Dishonored 1's 'The Knife of Dunwall' DLC, and the owner of the Dreadful Whale in Dishonored 2. Billie's on a quest to find Daud, her old mentor, as she has regrets and unfinished business with him that she'd like to set straight. Daud was one of the most complex characters in the original Dishonored, so continuing his story is a good choice. Or at least it would have been, had they not completely butchered it in Death of the Outsider. Gameplay Additions Pumping the breaks on my ire for a moment, I'll first talk about some of the fun new gameplay elements - of which there's actually only one. In DotO Billie never truly receives the mark of the Outsider, so you're not as overpowered as in other entries to the franchise. You do still have a few Void-derived powers however, such as a substitute for 'Blink' or 'Far Reach', called 'Displace', and more unique abilities like stealing an unconscious person's face to hide in plain sight. This new set of magical powers has less utility than every other in the series, but is still enjoyable to play around with. Sadly, that's where the gameplay innovation ends though. Rehashed Content The second most egregious flaw in DotO (we'll get to the first later) lies in how much gameplay content is rehashed. Portions of this aren't bad - the stealth and combat are ripped straight out of Dishonored 2 - but are as magnificent as ever, so I won't fault that. My biggest problem is with the level design. Every location in Death of the Outsider is either startlingly linear, used more than once, or is swiped from DH2. Arkane Studios is known for stellar world building, so I was shocked that the whole experience felt like I was backtracking through Dishonored 2. I'm not sure what the dev's were thinking, but a spin-off game shouldn't have its most noticeable design feature be that it's "the same as before, but moderately worse." Nostalgia & Lore Getting back to the story, DotO does have two tricks up its sleeve: narrative nostalgia and valuable lore. Daud and Billie Lurk’s return flows in tandem with the first Dishonored's DLC's, so it's pleasing to see these supporting characters get another self-contained expansion, regardless of how misused they were. The one truly impeccable piece of the narrative puzzle is the writing of the Outsider's backstory. This being is as compelling a character as he was in the main series, and is more developed than ever in Death of the Outsider. But, he keeps his mysterious allure: they don't overplay him. A desire to learn more about who the Outsider is and how he came to be is the best reason to play DotO. Boring Characters & Storyline I've filibustered for long enough, let's get to my biggest problem with Death of the Outsider: Billie and Daud are horribly written in this expansion. Whereas Billie was a guarded but seemingly layered character in DH2, peeling back the veil in DotO shows that she's really no more relatable than a brick-wall. Her voice actor's performances are stoic, and nothing ever drives the player to identify with her motivations. It wasn't even adequately explained why Daud means so much to her; in their last interaction 15 years prior she literally tried to kill him. As for Daud himself, he was once the most bad-@ss assassin in Dunwall next to Corvo - now he's a dying old man with no depth whatsoever. His redemption is non-existent; he's instead reduced to a regretful senior citizen. No one wants to see that version of Daud. All in all, the writing and characterization in this spin-off is just absolutely shameful. Conclusion If you've read this far you're probably wondering why I recommend DotO. It comes down to a catch-22 situation: the base stealth-action gameplay is still incredible, and the Outsider's personal story is worth experiencing for yourself. The rest of the content is near-abysmal by series standards, but I have to recognize the high-points for what they are - reason enough to play DotO if you're a fan of the franchise. Its value is decent as well, 8-10 hours in length makes this expansion a bargain, especially on sale. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who is only a passing admirer of Dishonored though, as nothing in Death of the Outsider impresses more than what's found in the mainline games. I'm happy to have learned more about the series lore, but this sandwich needed some damn roast beef and au jus. Personal Rating: 5.5/10 - Mostly LacklusterShow moreShow less
Ok so I pre-ordered this game because I love the series but I gotta be truthful to what I'm about to say. I feel the pricetag is alot for something that feels empty at the end of the game. I finished the game and walked away with "hm ok". Now I wish the recommend this game part said "Yes + No" or a custom type of recommendation so let me explain why. I recommend this to anyone who are fans of the series but I do not recommend this to anyone who would end up picking up and playing it. Lets start with, Pros: Gameplay is great and feels the same as dishonored 1 and 2 in terms of doing different types of tactics etc, Graphics are good but sometimes performance suffers even on my beefy PC, The voice acting is top-notch, The sections of the game are very lively, No bloodflies to scare the crap out of you, The new powers are brilliant. Cons: This should've just been some cheap DLC like brigmoire witches rather than a whole different "game" even though it uses the dishonored 2 engine and the same exact locations which are just revisted, The story is way too short and doesn't really reward you with any "OMG" moments, The missions seem lazy compared to dishonored 1 and 2, You have 0 incentive to not murder everyone in sight as it doesn't affect the game ending, You play as one character (while i thought you play as billie and daud kinda like corvo/emily), It took me 3 hours (Though i did afk hour alot due to not caring if it was on or not) to complete it while collecting and completing any side quests/contracts on max difficulty, You can easily run through this game if you don't care about killing, The performance of the game in terms of FPS mirror dishonored 2 launch issues with fps drops, Only 5 missions and one shouldn't really be considered a mission as its that short, Only 1 new type of enemy aka the void version of the clockwork soldiers, You don't get to upgrade your powers only more bones, You only get 3 powers through the whole game until you get a certain weapon that is just MEH. So all in all I'd tell you to wait for the game to be $10 as I feel I just wasted my money. The only good thing about the game is it at gave me some time wasting for FIFA around the corner. So my final review score is - 6/10 - Above average aka mildly mediocre.Show moreShow less
Worse than the other Dishonored games, but better than whatever else you're playing.Show moreShow less
I'll admit, this game is the weakest in the series. I was so looking forward to this title but it turned out to be kind of a let down. 1) Like in dishonored 2, they elaborate on what made the outsider, and what he is, therefore making him a tangible and understandable being, and less mysterious. 2) The length of this game isn't any longer than the dlc for Dishonred 1. It's 5 missions long, and I beat the game on the hardest difficulty in about 5 hours. The only reason this did not release as a dlc, is so they could charge more for it. Overall, I'd say it's an okay experience but it felt lackluster in the end. Not really worth $30.Show moreShow less
Camping for half an hour outside a door to stealthily clear out three enemies in a room is soo much fun.Show moreShow less
First of all, this game should be a 10 dollar DLC, not a 30 dollar standalone. Secondly, this game kinda sucks. The most fun part of Dishonored was how there were multiple, creative ways for you to get through an area. However, in this game, you only get 3 powers, and their functions only reinforce the linearity of the levels. The powers are a sort of blink where you can leave behind a marker and teleport to it later (the only thing that can be used creatively in combat) a sort of dark vision, and a camflauge. None can be upgraded. The ability to speak to rats is ultimately useless as they tell you nothing you couldn't simply find out by looking around. There really isn't anything interesting for you to do in each level, which would sometimes lead me to just run straight for the objective and get it over with. I haven't even bothered playing original game plus, I heard it only gives you 3 powers from the original game which are very similar to Billie's default powers, not helping at all. Another problem; The game is 5 missions long. Way too short for the price they placed on it. Also probably plays a role in how crappy the story is since there wasn't enough game time for it to develop. Let's talk about the story. Sucks. Rescuing Daud felt incredibly anti climactic and all of his character was thrown out the window. He's only here this game to tell you to kill The Outsider. Pretty disappointing, I really liked Daud in the first game. And the whole "kill The Outsider" thing seems interesting at first but it isn't. There isn't really any build up to it or feeling of "oo I can't wait to kill him and see what happens." The ending is also very anti-climactic, and this whole story itself seems unnecessary. All this does is make The Outsider even less of a mysterious, omniscient being, which are his interesting traits. If you really want to play it, wait for it to go on sale for at least 50%. There's no boss and the last level is just a bunch of enemies simply to make it last longer.Show moreShow less
