People downvote negative reviews like crazy because as you can see from the review scores, it's pretty great, and I agree with a lot of it. I'm only posting this as a negative review because the game has some very positive review scores and in my opinion there is something at the game's core that spoiled the experience for me and people should probably know about it in case it affects their enjoyment. In a nutshell, you have the game dangling fun combat and gadgets in front of you, but if you touch them you get reprimanded for not being 'stealthy'. You seriously have to go against so much negative feedback the game gives in order to kill people in this game, even though the combat is some serious fun. Are you realy going to do a no-kill playthrough when you're loaded to the teeth with grenades, mines, pistols and swords? Would have prefered less of a strict approach like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, which presents stealth as an option and doesn't force it down your throat. I'm not a stealth game guy is the crux of it all, and this is a stealth-ass stealth game. Of course if you're into stealth games, go for it - there's definitely not a lack of that. Just be aware that the screenshots are a little misleading; you will spend most of the game hiding somewhere waiting for someone to turn away from you.Show moreShow less

The "morality" system in Dishonored ruined it for me. First of all, "mortality" boils down to basically do you kill enemies or not. Ok fine, hardly nuanced, but also hardly the first video game to use this overly simplistic concept of morality. The problem is then that there are only two non-lethal methods of dealing with enemies and about two dozen lethal ones. Your non-lethal options are limited to walking behind an enemy and doing a sleeper hold, or shooting them with one of a very limited quantity of sleep darts. Every lethal dart has an upgradable capacity, yet the sleep darts do not. I mean, there's a drop-from-above to kill move, yet no drop-to-knock-out equivalent. Every creative and fun way of dealing with enemies in the game - everything shown in the game's trailer - involves killing them. Meanwhile when you start the game, they give this 4th wall breaking message that's like "hey player, killing dudes will get you the 'dark' ending in this here video game". The reason they have to do this is because all the enemies in the game are the same one-dimensional, stereotypically evil baddies of any other video game. Even the game's equivalent of what are supposed to be police are basically just B-movie Nazis. You would have absolutely no in-world motivation not to kill everything if the developers didn’t put this incredibly artificial, immersion breaking restriction on you. I suspect this message was added last minute when they found testers were just killing everything and it's a testament to how rushed and poorly implemented the game's mortality system is that they had to give you a message telling you not to kill and couldn't encourage it naturally. Anyway, not wanting to get the “dark” ending, I tried to play the game non-lethally and found it mind-numbingly boring given how few options you have for playing the game that way. So yeah I kind of ruined the experience for myself by always wanting to be the "good guy", but if they're going to make a point of forcing some heavy handed morality on you, yet give you jack squat to actually to play the game that way - that's a failing of the game. Deus Ex encourages you not to kill too (more XP for non-lethal takedowns), but at least it gives you a whole range of non-lethal options.Show moreShow less

10/10 Pros You really fall in love with the art style and dark, industrial setting. Also the lighting is absolutely gorgeous. (seriously, look at those sunsets at The Hound Pits pub) The map design is brilliant with dozens of optional routes to take and ways to complete objectives. (After playing some missions for the 4th time I was still finding pathways I hadn't taken before) You're completely free to play how you would like to - never be detected, set off every alarm there is, kill everyone with crazy rat swarms and traumatise a child or keep your hands super clean. Or just completely wing it. As there are not endless cutscenes and the game is split into missions, it's really replayable. It's fun to try a new playthrough of the game completely different to your last one and I do feel this game should be replayed to fully appreciate the different mechanics and everything the game has to offer. Cons "SHOULD WE GATHER FOR WHISKEY AND CIGARS TONIGHT?" will drive you insane after the 20th time. If you don't save often and are going for a stealth, no-kills run, YOU'RE SCREWED. The game can be buggy and the controls can mess up especially when going for non-lethal takedowns. So just save a LOT if you care about the acheivements.. Yeah, the storyline is pretty short but is thankfully made up for in gameplay. Also do me a favour; read notes, listen to audiologs, use the heart on everyone, look through keyholes to overhear conversations. It adds a lot more to the game!Show moreShow less

Dishonored is very polarized. The gameplay itself is absolutely superb, and if you can overlook its other flaws you could really enjoy it. I, however, could not. One of the major points Dishonored was hyped on was its morality system. Feeling the atmosphere change as a direct result off your actions was supposed to be a core feature. The actual implementation was terrible. First of all, a binary high-or-low chaos measurement left out the possibility of any shades of gray, which would be relevant for a game featuring an honorable assassin. More importantly, the measurement of morality did not work well. The main dichotomy, lethal or non-lethal, made very little difference for most of the actual gameplay. Basic enemies contribute negligably to morality rating when killed, the main measrement being whether you deal with your target lethally or non-lethaly. The difference between these methods, however, was not much. It is only marginally easier to kill a target than dispose of them non-lethally; twice the choice even came down to simply choosing between dialogue options. This simplicity removes all moral problems from the player as they have no motivation to deal with the target lethally. In short, the overly hyped morality system is an enormous letdown. Secondly, we have the story. It is a forced, generic "You were framed, now work covertly to fix everything" storyline with no motivation and no branching. I would compare it unfavorably to the token campaign modes of big-title FPSs. Graphics are ok, albeit with close to zero variation in character models. The voice acting is poor and most of the characters are unbelievable. If you are willing to ignore all of that, you will find a good game. I reiterate, the gameplay is excellent. Smooth feel, a few variant options, and emergent qualities make both combat andd stealth strong. The AI interacts better with stealth than in most other games and planning if stealth is much more important. If you just like a good stealth-action game and don't care about anything else, Dishonored is the game for you. TL;DR: Excellent stealth-action gameplay with no other redeeeming values and quite a number of condemning ones.Show moreShow less

Alright, here goes, I bought this game because I wanted something new and fresh and saw rave reviews everywhere for it. Honestly I had no problems with the gameplay, it was probably the best part of the game and honestly... maybe the only thing I liked about it. The voice acting in the game was wooden, the different levels were linear, at most giving you two paths to take which quickly meet back up again and the story is absolutely flat and boring. I think what upset me most was I see how much potential this game had, I feel like its lore and universe needed to be heavily expanded upon because it had very cool ideas but when you play further in the story waiting for explanations or more details about side characters, history, their dark magics, etc, they never come, and then the game is over. I did two seperate playthroughs to test out 2 different styles and see how things changed... there wasnt much difference. Kill less people, and in the end youre successful and people are nice, kill more people and in the end youre successful and people are mean. the only difference being a few mins worth of cutscenes. As a side note, game was also pretty short, did every sidequest I could find (theres maybe 2) and thoroughly searched my first time through and I beat it in 2 sittings. Second playthrough I did just the main story and I easily got it done in one, My roommate was shocked when I told him I had beat it already (he hadnt played it yet). If you are debating about buying this, I would say pass, unless you get it on sale super cheap it isnt worth it. Havent tried the dlc so maybe it gets better but Im not dishing out an additional $20 for a more complete experience. This game clearly appeals to many people, it just seems that I am not one of them. I have not finished the game. I think my problems with the game stems largely from my approach. I tried playing pacifist my first time through. Unfortuneately trying to play without killing anyone leads largely to a lot of trial and error. Save before every guard that poses an obstancle to you, and try to take him down a dozen different ways before you finally find the one that works and can move on, rinse repeat. It gets very tedious very quickly. This problem was compounded by my other habit: completionism. The game is lauded for having multiple paths through which to complete your goals. But for someone like me that doesn't mean choices, it simply means more paths you have to go through. Unlike in most games where this would feel like an opportunity for exploration, this tends to feel more like forced backtracking through cleared out areas, likely because of the "paths" aspect of the level layouts. What's worse is the game actually encourages this, defeating the purpose of the entire paths notion to begin with. There any numerous talismans for powers to collect in each stage, and the game even tracks whether you've collected every coin in the stage or not. It's kind of a nightmare. Compound this further with more guards to endlessly save/load on as you try to find the one way to avoid killing them and the aggravation just continues to increase.
