I have not felt the touch of a woman in 4 years.Show moreShow less
(review contains spoilers) I was disappointed by my own expectations. To make this clear for everyone who has played the original game and is thinking about buying this one: There is NO new content added to the main portion of the game we have all known and loved. There are no new scares, a route for Monika, hell the dialogue for act 3 has not been updated with more dialogue for Monika either. I'm saying this because that's what I was hoping to see while playing through this game. Not necessarily the things I just listed, but just ANYTHING new that would spook me out of my socks or make me excited like it did almost 4 years ago and justify my commitment on spending money on this game. Alas, outside of just some minor tweaks or visual improvements, nothing changed. The original menu has also now been replaced with an overhaul, which actually makes playing the game slightly more annoying. Hitting ESC to instantly pull up the menu is no longer possible. Instead, you either have to select it by highlighting it with keyboard controls, or clicking on it with your cursor. Normally I wouldn't nitpick about something like this, if it didn't make Act 3 annoying as hell as a result because you're stuck if Monika decides to not say anything. Speaking of things that got worse, this port can be argued to even be a DOWNGRADE from the main game, as a few things are missing or cannot be experienced anymore. These things include: > The corrupted "are you sure you want to leave" box while trying to leave the Sayori suicide scene. > The rare Monika screen by pausing the game or entering the menu at any point during Act 2 > The corrupted cursor that makes it looks like part of Sayori's face during Act 2. (To be fair, there is a chance for the last two things to happen and I might have just been super unlucky, but since I never encountered these in my own playthrough despite going through Act 2 multiple times (reason why I did below), I'm almost convinced they're gone.) There might be other things I have missed, or this might just be perceived as me nitpicking, but if a game gets rereleased as a remaster or similar of some sort, the last thing I would think of is having cut content instead of new. The old way of having the game folder up to discover secrets or delete Monika from the game has been abandoned for an OS imitation that's supposed to make you feel immersed because of the lore you start to discover, but quite frankly I perceived this as a downgrade. Looking at how the game folder got filled up with more and more secrets as time went on and actually deleting Monika yourself from the characters folder made it feel a lot more powerful and made me go "wow" than just doing it from a fake OS. Having to "close" the game, being brought back to the fake OS to view the new files, or to delete Monika, and then booting it up again just feels really clunky and inconvenient. Things such as exploring the files has been massively cut down as well. The original game allowed you to discover secrets of each character file by converting it into another file type and discovering the results. Another similar case like this was exploring the whole script of the game, and seeing easter eggs such as the brain message easter egg. But alas, all of this has been cut away too. I know why this is the case for so many of these things. This version of the game was released on consoles, specificially PS4,PS5 and the Switch, so they had to make compromises, but my disappointment still remains. So now that I complained by what hasn't changed, let's talk about the new content Discovering the twelve emails (I believe) throughout playing the game was interesting as those lore related and brought a lot of light to what DDLC was really supposed to be, and gave us a lot more information on what things such as Project Libitina are. I suck at putting pieces of a puzzle together, but I cannot wait to hear all of the theories that will come from the community because of this. Unlocking all of the images is fun at first, but turns into frustrating very quickly. One of the main categories from the images includes the secret poems you can unlock and view throughout Act 2. You know, like the 3 times you are asked about viewing a secret poem. This was quite honestly the worst thing to do in this game if you were going for full completion like me. You cannot save scum by constantly reloading a save and hoping a new poem is going to appear. Once you get the 3 poems, you are basically forced into resetting the whole run, and that means going through Act 1 again, and being forced to wait a couple of minutes until reaching Act 2 and trying your luck again. Everything else was fine. Either you unlocked artwork that you knew already if you were a fan like me, or in rare cares even completely new artwork never released before. You are also able to view every poem you have ever seen from the game, and even get the chance to read an entirely new one from each character once you obtain all of their poems you can find from the game, which I thought was very cool. A slight peeve I had however with unlocking the CGIs was not being able to view the different expressions. From my memory, every visual novel I ever played which allowed you to view past CGIs had multiple pages in case there was more than one expression. This game does not have that, instead it's only one from each scene. The side stories of the game were pretty good. It made the characters more fleshed out and includes some pretty serious, but not as dark as the main game themes such as panic attacks and depression. However as a fast reader, I got through them pretty quickly and finished them in around 2-3 hours, not exactly $15 content. Coming back to the full completion topic as I am reaching the end of this review, it is tedious. Most of the time I was sitting down, trying out everything in order to full complete the game as playing since release had people just as confused as me. The game never tells you what is needed for "full completion", which gave me a headache for several hours trying to come up what the last thing I needed was when I was stuck at 98%. Was it literally going through every dialogue the main game has to offer? Was it viewing all of the start up lines which replaced the disclaimer? Did I miss any minor scares from Act 2 by any chance which had a really low chance of unlocking? Nope, apparently it was just playing a song from the soundtrack repeatedly multiple times. Great... In the end, this game was fine, but I would recommend the original game 10x over this one. Maybe if you are desperate for more content or want to see more of the Dokis, but if you want to go headfirst into this game expecting more scares, more content for the routes or even a new ending like I did, you are in the wrong place. Updating this review because it received a lot more traction than I thought it would with a closing statement: I'd like to add that I don't totally regret spending money on this game, even though I might have sounded like it. As long as it goes to future projects such as Project Libitina and leads to more great games to be released that were as good as the original DDLC, I'm all for it. I just wish it was advertised better, and not catered to the people who knew it for the horror by constantly saying "THE #1 PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR IS BACK" when outside of the candy heartz theme and the whole lore (if you can even call that horror) nothing new was added. tl;dr there's no new horror, me big mad.Show moreShow less

AN ABSOLUTE RIP OFF Very disappointed with the complete overhaul of the PC aspect of this game in order to fit on consoles. Basically what the team has done is make a "virtual desktop" inside the game where all the file changes and Easter eggs occur, instead of actually occurring on your regular PC, like the original game. Therefore, the interesting mystery and and unsettling nature of discovering creepy images and text files on YOUR PC is legitimately ruined. One major fun and creepy part of the game is ruined completely and takes away a very engaging aspect of the original game unique to a lot of other horror games. Also the side stories literally make no sense at all in the scope of the original game. I'm supposed to believe these girls all love and cherish each other deeply (almost a little too much if you know what I mean) when in the main game they all can't stand each other, openly mock one anther, get in fights and try to one up each other for the MC's attention? It makes no sense and doesn't fit in the game at all and frankly they are all super dull and boring ("What you said made me sad" "Oh I'm so sorry I actually love and respect you!" over and over) There are also NO CHANGES or additions to the original story. It's the same base game as the original.....so why not just play the original - It's free after all. All things considered this is a very lackluster director's cut that doesn't do anything better than the original and, once again, FREE game. Save yourself the $15 and just watch the side stories on YouTube. I seriously cannot think of a legitimate reason to buy this. You would have the same amount of fun in the original game, if not more since the files and Easter eggs show up on your PC instead of a fake one. Use that $15 for a much better horror game like resident evil 2 remake or F.E.A.R. Terrible and bare bones release which, considering they had 4 years to work on it, is embarrassing and frankly pathetic, and I loved the original game too. Sorry. Also you can't say all girls in this are 18 or older when they very clearly state over and over again they are all in high school. What is Natsuki, who boasts about being the youngest, 18 years and 1 day old? Stop it.Show moreShow less

This review contains mild, covered SPOILERS. You've been warned! Now hear me out before you get mad. The new Virtual Machine gimmick ruins this game for me. I get that its necessary for consoles so that you can emulate the originals's file manipulation but the original DDLC game broke new ground because it was made clear that you weren't safe even outside the game. I don't fault Team Salvato and Serenity Forge for wanting to bring DDLC to new audiences, but in this case it cost the game its entire identity. The fake desktop is clunky and I can't even view DDLC and the files at the same time to see what's changing. We went from converting ciphered messages and images and sound files and scouring for clues in REAL LIFE to changing our system clock and checking predetermined folders IN GAME, which really takes the wind out of the original's sails. And as if to add insult to injury, the narrative explanation for the fake desktop is awful. The whole corporate-project/monitoring idea is overdone and completely waters down any intrigue about the original game. Natsuki snaps her own neck and I exit to find an email from Chad in IT commenting about Simulation 4. It's alienating and totally zeros the investment and suspense of the DDLC story. Nothing about the game even follows you out to the virtual desktop, which is a totally wasted opportunity. This was a golden opportunity for DDLC to capitalize on the things that made it so unique. Now we have an in-game music player and couple of 15 minute fanservice side stories with no choices, no scares and no saving. Really? Was this really the vision when Team Salvato made the first game? Is that what took 4 years and cost me 15 dollars? I was really excited to see what Team Salvato and DDLC would do next and it looks to me like the answer was cash in on its dedicated fanbase.Show moreShow less

Bought this in hopes that the DDLC plus trailer was just a trap and was gonna actually be something big and catch us by surprise just like the original DDLC did. And I was wrong, well, I got the side stories, music and the HD pictures, but like, what's the point? It's literally the same game with some minor dialog changed here and there, but nothing special at all. After finishing the original DDLC just five months ago, I was blown away by it and wanted more, been a huge fan ever since. Seeing that the name of the new content we're getting is DDLC plus, was already kind of upsetting for me, and I just can't imagine how the people who waited four years for this felt like. What really threw me off was that you don't access the game files the same way you used to. You have to go to your main menu and click "exit DDLC" to access this "virtual machine"??? I only found about this when I was two hours into the game. This VM thing makes sense for consoles, but they definitely should've kept it the same on PC. What made DDLC stand out a lot was that you actually had to ALT TAB and go to the game files to solve puzzles and find easter eggs, but now it's all done in-game which kind of takes that crazy vibe of exploring away. The only reason why I went over two hours of playtime and didn't request a refund, was to gift Dan the ten euros, because of how good DDLC is, and also for the effort on this. Plus the music is kinda fire not gonna lie. I can only recommend this to people want to get side stories and the music. However, I can't recommend this to new players and to people who expect this to be any different from the original game. (Edit - If you do not have a PC you can play on, but only have a console and buying DDLC Plus is your only choice, and have never played the original, then I can recommend you to give DDLC a shot on console.) In conclusion, this was pretty disappointing and wasn't worth the hype considering the amount of time people waited for this, but at the same time we have to keep in mind that it's just Dan working on this after all. The side stories were as to be expected, though they were pretty weird at the same time, like how quickly Sayori and Yuri opened up their feelings, felt kind of rushed, but that could just be me.Show moreShow less

Loses what makes the original special. DDLC is a great game, one of the greatest horror games ever made. But what makes it special is the way it breaks the boundaries between the game world and the real world, thereby stripping you of the feeling of safety that the distance between you and the game world usualy provides. Because DDLC PLUS has to resort to simulating a fake desktop rather than actually taking place on your own system this feeling of discomfort and realism never takes place, which ruins the horror of the original. The events of the game are no longer happening to "you", they are happening to some faceless employee of the Metaverse company. I recommend everyone play DDLC, but stick to the original, and once you've played that and want more content, then skip through this version in order to get to the side stories. The original is the horror story, DDLC plus is the start of the story of the expanded universe where the original took place in. It should be played after you understand the tragedy of Monika and want to understand the characters more fully. Buy DDLC plus to support the team, but play the original first.Show moreShow less
