I know this is an older game and I've had it for a while, but I am upset over the fact that there are no subtitles. I'm deaf and require them to understand what is going on. The story is just as important to me as the gameplay itself. I've tried contacting ID software but the reCAPTCHA words/numbers won't accept anything I type. Without getting it to accept anything, I can't contact them. If there exist a patch somewhere to deal with this issue, I have no idea where it is.Show moreShow less

This game starts out really strong. I really enjoy the visuals and the horror-esque atmosphere is really engrossing for the first half of the game. Enemies feel threatening because they hide in the dark and will sometimes attack you from behind. Imps lunge at you in a way that will have you screaming the first couple times it happens. Unfortunately the game kinda drags in the second half, and the holes in AI begin to show. Most enemies will either just run straight for you or stand in place and shoot. The horror vibes diminish as you realize how formulaic each encounter is. By the time you reach Hell, the difficulty spikes way up and you're suddenly running and gunning like its classic Doom. I wish this meant the Hell section is better, but unfortunately the level design does not accommodate this gameplay switch. Your best option in most scenarios is to kite the big baddies, but the levels are often too claustrophobic and the enemies that spawn behind you hinder your ability to fight effectively. Not fun imo Overall I would honestly say to skip this one unless you absolutely have to play every Doom title. Its not a terrible game, but the pacing is quite bad, and the ending is annoying to play through. Would I recommend this to other people? Not in 2020, there's better modern Doom games out there, and even the old titles are more fun to play through. If you want dark horror ambiance with your Doom, play Doom 64 first.Show moreShow less
Best game I've ever playedShow moreShow less
Doom and its sequel were THE BEST GAMES EVER in terms of good gunplay, fluid movement, twitch reaction, and replayability factor. This is NOT a Doom game. Ridiculously dark, in an attempt to create a tense and scary atmosphere. If you dont fancy modding the game this means hours of walking into walls essentially feeling your way round the perimiters of small rooms full of random clutter that cannot simply be walked over, but has to be kicked, tripped over and caught on. Depleting stamina bar means no unlimited running, seems a bit strange that someone would suddenly become too tired to jog when all manner of hellspawn are chasing after him. Shotgun is a bad joke, easily possible to completely miss every pellet at a range of less than 2 meters. View flinch when hit is probably the worst i have ever seen in any game ever. This is not helped by the random swarms of small ankle biting monsters in totally dark corridors full of crap to trip over. These last few issues combined make this a painfully bad experience. Some people seem to think that getting triple-slapped when you cant even see what youre supposed to be shooting at is an intended game mechanic that adds to the atmosphere. Are you for real? Anyway il leave it down to you whether you think this is worth the purchase on nostalgia factor alone, but this review is coming from a lifelong doom fan who bought this game for less than £2, and i still feel as though i wasted my money.Show moreShow less
Classic Masterpiece from 2004, definetly worth playing to this day! *DON'T buy the BFG version, the Original is 1000x better in almost every way* Before starting a New Game make sure to change these settings for the best experience possible: If you're playing on a Widescreen monitor make sure to insert the following commands on the in-game console (you can also edit these parameters in the config file, which is located at Doom 3\base > DoomConfig.cfg). (Change these according to your screen resolution): Press: ctrl + alt + ' (or ~ depending on your kb language) to enable console; r_customwidth 1920 r_customheight 1080 r_mode -1 r_aspectratio 1 (0 for 4:3, 2 for 16:10, 1 for 16:9) r_fullscreen 1 vid_restart (to apply) After changing these settings it's important to do one more thing. Applying the Ultra graphics preset in the game settings menu will actually not work and it'll use the Low preset instead, that happens because the game's engine has trouble reading newer GPUs VRAM, so it'll automatically apply the Low settings for "security" purposes. In order to achieve the Ultra graphics preset, you'll have to manually go into the config file (located at Doom 3\base > DoomConfig.cfg), and replace the following variables: seta image_downSizeLimit "0" seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0" seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "0" seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "0" seta image_downSizeBump "0" seta image_downSizeSpecular "0" seta image_useCache "0" seta image_cacheMegs "20" seta image_cacheMinK "200" seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "0" seta image_useNormalCompression "0" seta image_useAllFormats "1" seta image_useCompression "0" seta image_preload "1" seta image_roundDown "0" seta image_forceDownSize "0" seta image_downSize "0" seta image_lodbias "0" seta image_anisotropy "16" seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" Additional useful binds to quckly switch between Fullscreen and Windowed mode: bind "PGDN" "r_fullscreen 0" bind "PGUP" "r_fullscreen 1" bind "HOME" "vid_restart" After that, you are all good to go and enjoy Doom 3 maxed out!Show moreShow less
Though my play time says I've only played this for fifteen minutes, rest assured, I played and completed this entire game. It took me many years to work my way through Doom 3, on multiple copies of the game. Doom 3 is a game that wants to be many things. It is good at basically none of them. Many of the things it wants to be contradict each other. It wants to be scary, but it also wants to be macho action. It wants to be Half-Life (and specifically Half-Life), but it also wants to stay Doom. It is neither scary nor action-packed, its story doesn't make any sense, and its villain doesn't actually state any real intended motive. Demons arrive on Mars with the help of Dr. Betruger and want to use our space ships to travel to earth. Think about that for a moment: demons have to use our ships for their invasion, and the game goes out of its way to imply they're rare enough that they aren't readily available. When the first 15 or 20 demons get to earth, what do they think will happen when they get there? Do they think they'll just order another shipment of demons from Mars until, 20 demons at a time, they've conquered the entire planet, unopposed? And why does Betruger want to help the demons reach earth? He just does, because that's all the reason anyone needs, apparently. There are dozens of email logs, a bunch of lore about the origin of the demons and why a portal to hell even exists, but the antagonist is evil just because he's evil, like a Saturday Morning Cartoon villain. The real heart of the problem is the gameplay. Flashlight issues aside, gun play is slow and clumsy. Weapons take forever to reload, and once you start reloading your gun, you can't switch to something else. Often I'd get in to scenarios where I'd empty the clip in one gun, only to have my character start reloading it automatically, locking me in to a long animation. Your only option in that scenario is to watch your character slowly slot each individual shotgun shell in to the barrel, all the while helplessly dancing around incoming enemies. This feels like a horror game mechanic designed to make you panic, but it most frequently happened to me during a part of the game where it's trying to ramp up the action. It creates a very frustrating disconnect, because any logical human would just switch to a different weapon and reload that other gun later. And then there's the ending, with one of the most limp final bosses I've ever encountered and a crummy cliffhanger to set up the expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil. The last thing I wanted out of this game at the end was a stupid "Gotcha!" moment, but that's exactly what it has. Doom 3 has a reputation that can't be ignored, but I figured it was at least interesting enough to see through to the end. I was wrong. Curiosity killed the Cacodemon.Show moreShow less

The DOOM game that it's cool to hate. At first, I was prepared to be pretty generous. I really wanted to like it. The atmosphere was pretty cool. The flash light didn't really bother me (ultimately, I think that is a minor problem at best). I was having a good time for a while, but as I kept playing, my problem with this game became apparent: it's too long. Now, that sort of thing generally requires some context to make any sense. In general, I think 10-12 hours is a pretty optimal length for a beefy singleplayer FPS campaign. DOOM 3 fits pretty comfortably within that range, even a bit less than that. So, why is it too long? Well, it's because it is very much a one trick pony and the vast majority of what it has to offer happens with in the first HOUR. By half-way through the game, so many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ demons have jumped out of unrealistically dark corners, out from behind doors, through vents, and just plain teleported from betwixt the level designer's butt cheeks. It's not scary, it's not intense, it's just obnoxious. But as if that isn't enough, to be frank, the actual gunplay (id's bread and butter) is mediocre at best. The shotgun has the most absurd spread I have ever seen. I realize that videogame shotguns largely have unrealistically miniscule range for game balance reasons, but this thing literally cannot consistently hit an enemy that is currently punching you in the face. The assault rifle is the closest to a decent ballistic weapon (it even seems to shoot where you aim), but its effectiveness is lessened greatly by the spastic, jumpy animations of the small to medium sized enemies. The minigun should be stronger, but its extreme spread makes it infeasible beyond close range or gigantic targets. The pistol is utterly useless. These are the weapons you use the most. I suspect that a headshot damage bonus exists in this game, but the shot registration/hitboxes/weapon spread are so inconsistent that it's pretty much impossible to tell. That and the fact that most enemies are bullet sponges. But, really, the worst sin they've committed is the god-awful abomination that is the flinch system. The second you are hit by any melee attack from any enemy, no matter how tiny, the game jerks the camera around spastically. This really makes their cheap horror jump scare tricks extra annoying, since enemies are frequently spawned very close to you, and it can easily result a chain reaction wherein a few enemies beating on you make it near impossible to reasonably shoot back. It also adds to the joy of fighting one of my least favorite enemies: some mutant soldier ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who run straight at you and leap with a stupidly long range melee attack that auto-corrects MID JUMP. And, despite all of that, these things aren't really the core problem with the game. The primary reason DOOM 3 isn't very fun is that they have completely neutered any movement or position-based tactics. I would generally divide these tactics into two major categories: Mobility (dodging) and Sightline Management (cover). You can't take advantage of either of these tactics in DOOM 3 to any significant degree because nearly all of the fights are spastic, close-quarters messes in tiny rooms and corridors filled with garbage. And that is despite the fact that fast, Quake-style strafe jumping is possible while you're holding shift (because of course the game has a psuedo-modern sprint system with a stamina bar) until you hit a wall... or a railing... or a shelf... or a desk... or the single enemy in front of you in the hallway. The indirect result of this is that enemy prioritization is nolonger interesting. Maps are too small and spawn waves too limited to create varied enemy compositions. What weapon you use is essentially irrelevant beyond accuracy and damage output (because pain chance is gone). Hit-scan and projectile enemies aren't really mixed and yet even if they were, the game wouldn't allow for a scenario in which that mix would be interesting. And so the game never really evolves. There are never really any more interesting variables to account for, even as they add enemies and weapons, it still feels largely the same, because none of them really change anything. Just shoot the enemy closest to punching you and then move on to the next closest target. DOOM 3 also tries to be an extra grimdark Half-Life or maybe System Shock with lots of story elements that didn't need to be there and aren't executed particularly well. The most successful of these are the background scripted sequences that the player can observe. The least successful is the annoying wealth of unskippable cut-scenes. In the middle are the audio and text logs that you can pick up and view on your PDA for... some reason? This also gave them an excuse to hide some keycodes for equipment lockers, but I really don't get the point. It doesn't accomplish anything interesting and feels like a waste of time. It is true that around maybe the 2/3 to 3/4 mark, the pace picks up and it starts to almost feel like a sandard id game, but by that point, I was so tired of fighting these stupid enemies that it wasn't a particularly welcome change of pace. Every area drags on into 3-4 sections that are largely the same. The final boss fight is a major let down. Ultimately, everything that was cool about this game was executed better in Nu DOOM 2016.Show moreShow less
