I am disliking this game not because of it's quality, but because Bethesda felt they absolutely had to damn REQUIRE that you make a Bethesda.net account just so you can access multiplayer and addons. Seriously? You can't just use steam's workshop for addons like a normal game? And steams servers can handle multiplayer games just fine too. But no. You do you Bethesda. And I will continue to ignore your existence. Scummy practices kill even the best of games. On top of that, I found out they censored the 31st and 32nd levels. At this point I hope this is just a very early test of their new unity port, because it's already looking to be pathetic. Censoring Nazi imagery? What are they afraid of? Liberals? Everyone knows the Nazis were defeated. That's why they are often bad guys in video games. So why censor them? Does Bethesda have no spine? Also, in case it wasn't obvious to some people, or if you live under a rock, I am talking solely about the new unity version, *not* the old DOS version.Show moreShow less

Don't get me wrong, Doom II is awesome and I am in no way discouraging anyone from playing it. In fact, I encourage everyone to give it a try at least once because it is a great game. I am, however, discouraging people from purchasing this version of it because it leaves a lot to be desired. As other reviews have pointed out, this version simply gives you a very basic version that runs through Dosbox. I don't think that this alone would be all that bad, but I cannot find a way to customize the controls, which are quite bad. This is how I feel about this version and if this doens't bother you, then by all means grab this one because it is fine otherwise.Show moreShow less
I am 79 yeas old and bought this game years ago. I played it until it went bad. I could never find it again. My grandson told me to try steam. I played a while back I guess a total of three hours. I wish that there were more single player games for old times that don't know much about computers. I know enough to mess up look how long it took to get back to the game. Thank you. Doom II itself is great, but this version is unplayable on modern computers without looking up instructions, modifying documents, and downloading programs. If you're hoping to just download and play, you will be disappointed.Show moreShow less

Edit 2024: Farewell Doom 2, Bethesda is delisting you. Delisting any game from Steam makes me lose respect for that game company. "I am disliking this game not because of it's quality, but because Bethesda felt they absolutely had to REQUIRE that you make a Bethesda.net account just so you can access multiplayer and addons. Seriously? You can't just use steam's workshop for addons like a normal game? And steams servers can handle multiplayer games just fine too. But no. You do you Bethesda. This is from another review that I agree with. (I don't mind they censored those levels so the game could be sold in Germany, but give us the uncensored version. That would have required effort though, and Bethesda takes a year to fix things like being able to upgrade Doom Eternal from standard to deluxe edition). This is all for the Unity version you can now play on Steam, and I agree with this reviewer entirely. I have not been happy with Bethesda either because I bought the Standard edition of Doom Eternal, wanted to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition for over a year and Steam said I couldn't, it was Bethesda's decision to allow it. They finally fixed it as of a month or two ago, but this was broken since Doom Eternal's launch. Best case scenario is remove the Bethesda login requirements for this game and allow us to use the Steam Workshop. Stop being lazy bethesda, it's why you're quickly gaining the ranks for one of the most despised game companies in existence. (I mean Activision Blizzard probably has that top spot right now, but personally BHVR and Avalanche Studios are pretty high up there for me too). If you are a Doom noob this is not a bad way to get into the game on console. It's easy to get into on PC, but just know the game's heavily censored and you cannot mod it in any way without going into source ports.Show moreShow less
This is the best game ever. I could play this forever with all the mods/WADs that the fanbase has made. And while it doesn't have the biggest community, there's one, and it's still active to this day. This game is pure fun, I recommend this game to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Play this. 10/10Show moreShow less
