You play as one of six SWAT team members rescuing hostages, disarming bombs, and saving the day. Each playable character has different abilities, adding an extra level of strategy to the gameplay. From preparation to completion, missions offer a number of compelling options for the player to consider. Character choice is important. Each of the game’s six classes (Assaulter, Breacher, Shield, Recon, Off-Duty Guy, and Agent Fergie) has a different style. Distinct weapons like assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, as well as two pieces of gear mean that not only does every class demand a distinctive approach but provides Door Kickers: Action squad with an assortment of difficulty levels. You play the levels, you gain experience by killing bad guys and saving the ladies, and then you use your points to improve your character’s abilities. It’s all very clear and simple. Door Kickers: Action squad gives its weapons different recoil and firing rates. Once you’ve levelled up a few times you’ll be able to spend those points on upgrades that improve your recoil, meaning you’ll be far more accurate and the hostages will catch fewer stray bullets in their noodles. You can upgrade your health, too, as well as buy new gear. The game has 84 non-linear levels to complete, bonus Endless Tower and Zombie Invasion modes, 60 weapons and gear items, over 20 enemy types, and four mission objectives. Take this system with the level design, the variety of enemies, and the clear thought that was put into the encounters of Door Kickers: Action squad, and you’ve got a potent retro action game. THE GOOD - Satisfying, tactical combat - Lots of content across three modes - Online play, Co-op - Nostalgia-driven graphics - Scenarios offer different strategies THE BAD - Occasional lack of clarity in visuals - Simplistic music - Lack of a story mode 9/10 DISASTER | BAD | MEDIOCRE | OKAY | GOOD | GREAT | AMAZING | MASTERPIECE If you like this review, then please consider giving it a thumbs up. The game just left early access so this review will cover the state of the game as of 9/10/2018. If you're looking for a more hardcore experience similar to Doorkickers, this game is not for you. It provides a more arcade like experience than its predecessor. The game is quite fun for the first 4 or so hours kicking open doors and blasting everything on the other side. The sprites and their animations are quite well done and the backgrounds really give the game some flair. The gameplay boils down to something similar to metal slug or bro force. You pick your class, which determines your weapons and abilities, your weapons, and some equipment such as grenades. You then blast your way through 2d environments smashing down doors and turning bad guys into swiss cheese, all while trying not to fail other objectives. These include hostage rescue, arrests, and bomb defusals. However, the game could use a bit of work at this moment. The team did a great job fixing a lot of the bugs found in early access but there's just not enough content for the full price. There is no randomization at all on any of the levels, meaning that once you beat a level, there isnt much incentive to do it again. Pros: -Very good sprite work and neat animations that help bring the game world to life -The player classes are all fairly unique, both in use and in look -Decent weapon and gear variety Cons: -Short length for the price (about 3-4 hours) -Very little randomization. In general, objectives and enemies will be in the same place every time you play a map -Certain loadout items are either useless or are functionally inferior to other choices -Characters are too strong and only two of the 5 classes actually support others, making teamwork other than shooting at the same direction difficult as well as unnecessary. -Gets very boring quickly as you handle every room with the same 2 button presses no matter what the opposition. Simply kick the door down and hold the shoot button until everyone is dead. If i had to make some suggestions to improve the fun factor of the game, the first would be to add mouse aim, as well as allowing the baddies to aim in a similar manner. This would increase player interaction with the game, as well as allow players more room to miss or accidentally hit hostages; the current locked aim makes the game feel very mechanical; there isnt much room for anything other than holding the shoot key and waiting for the spread to reset. My second suggestion would be to add some randomness to the levels. I noticed that on many levels there are enemies that spawn from doors, which is a really neat idea. However, they are extremely predictable right now and they never change spawns, meaning once you play the level once, you know where everything is. Having enemies spawn at random doors when players reach a certain point of the level, or accomplish a certain objective, would do a lot to increase the replayability. Also, adding different spawn locations for the hostages and other objectives would also be very neat, especially from a coop perspective, as it would encourage players to use the newly added recon class to find out which rooms have hostages and which rooms are safe to blow to pieces with the fire shotgun. Finally, some of the loadout choices could really use some work. There's not much point in picking anything other than smokes, and on rare occasions, flashbangs. This is because smokes make you completely invisible and the enemies dont react to getting shot from the smoke, meaning all you need to do is to drop one down before you kick a door in and you'll be untouchable. The frag grenades and breaching charges are more or less useless, as their jobs are accomplished faster by either just kicking down the door and shooting the enemy, or with flashbangs. Likewise, the heavy armor is always the best choice, as the slight reduction in movement speed doesnt really stop you from accomplishing bomb defusals, and the other choices such as +1 grenade or faster reloads have their jobs done by class perks. Also, many of the class specific ultimates are much weaker than the sniper option. Im not really sure what can be done about it but many of the weapons arent much stronger than the loadout weapons and not much can beat instantly killing 3 enemies of any toughness even if they're threatening hostages. Some, such as the mp5k, are even worse because it can't double tap to instantly kill an enemy without hurting hostages. TL;DR I'd like to apologize if this review seems to ramble on, but I really like the idea of a coop sidescrolling police game and am just a little bit disappointed in the 1.0 release. The game is definitely fun for a few hours, especially if you go in blind with a friend. It's a little overpriced for the content at the moment because if the lack of replayability, so I would wait until a sale before you buy. [I did a ton of playing during the early access period to help catch bugs for so that's why I have a lot of hours in game. In terms of going into it with a buddy and playing the campaigns, there's only about 3-4 hours of content]Show moreShow less
Door Kickers: Action Squad review Pros: -The game looks fantastic, the retro look combined with good graphics is a perfect combination. -The sounds are okay, not too great, but it'll improve hopefully. -Although there are only 3 charachters, each one is unique and fulfills a different role. -The maps are great, with alot of variety and different approaches. -You can 100% trust these devs to make a great game, I've seen them do it with Door Kickers (the original), so they are absolutely going to improve the current state of the game. -The music is great too. -The gameplay is good, it's really fun with two people behind one keyboard. (it plays similarly to Nidhogg in that remark) Cons: -There is not alot of content. (They're going to add more content, though. N. B.: This sentence can be applied to most Cons ) -There are not alot of weapons. -Grenades and flashes are not useful IMO. -There are only 3 charachters. -I haven't seen randomised placement of enemies. This would give the game replayability. (Sidenote: while there is no randomisation, the game does have a star rating system, so you can replay until you get those 3 stars. Maybe you consider this replayability.) -Not alot of levels, and seeing as I found those levels to be the same when replaying, it may be better to wait until there is more content if you want to buy this game. Final Verdict: This game is an obvious masterpiece in the works, but not in its current state. There is not alot of content, not alot of replayability but it is amazing. I personally recommend this game, because I know the devs will add tons more into this game, but if you have had bad experiences with Early Acces games before, don't buy this. The devs said the first major update will come out in December, which meanse there'll be alot more content in just a few weeks, which would resolve, or try to resolve one of the major issues with this game: lack of content. If you don't trust the devs, or if you are impatient, wait a few moths and then come back. I guarantee that you will see a completely new and fresh experience. For the more trusting and patient people out there: get this game immediately, it will provide you with some quality time. Rating: 8.5/10 devs pls make nades gud EDIT: I finished all the levels with the maximum score (3 stars) in about 6 hours, so don't expect alot of content. It is possible to finish the game entirely in about an hour, or even less, if you are a dedicated and skilled gamer. I have to say that I am a little dissapointed in this game at its current state. I was looking for something that required a little bit more teamwork, tactics, and critical thinking. You basically (kick) doors down and gun down anything on the other side with little to no grace because the game doesnt provide much options on how to clear a room. The maps/enemies are not randomized so once you learn the level, you can easily run thru each room and clear without much resistance and pray that a stray shot from a shooter doesnt waste a hostage. The biggest downfall is you don't know whats on the other side in the dark rooms and usually by the time you come up with a decision to react its already too late, most the time enemies kill hostages, forcing you to restart and try another tactic to clear the room. If the game allowed skills such as breach/clear breach/frag breach/flash so on and so forth, you wouldnt have to keep restarting the level until you learn what/who is in each room. The co-op is unimpressive, mostly you get a buddy and run and gun everything and everyone because there is no communication on tactics. I might change my opinion upon further updates and see how well the skills update is integrated. But at this current state this game, to me, is just an average run and gun shooter that plays more like metal slug then a door kickers game. Conclusion: I love the game's soundtrack, sound effects, graphics, character personalities, and the core shooting mechanics of the game. For ~10 bucks I got a fun few hours out of it and I'm sure there will be more content in the future. Please remember that the point of a review is to talk about a product in its current state. Nobody needs to be reminded that this product, in particular, is in early access, and is subject to change. **Edit** As of Full Force version: The Recon character is a great addition to the game and is a step in the right direction. You can eliminate the "fog of war" and possibly implement some real tactics. Although, the levels are still not randomized so once you memorize the levels there is no need for Recon as he is not as combat profecient as the other classes besides Fergie in my opinion. There is no replayability. You can 3 star every mission and repeat the same old stuff to unlock achievements and grind all your characters to max level is as far as you can go and it is quite boring. The co-op has not changed, I can never find a partner and I dont like that the HUD is on the right side whenever you finally do get to join a game. Why can't the HUD stay on the left side? It completely messes up my mojo. I understand the the dev wants to make a classic 80's style type game or something but please if you read this, take away all the flaws that those games had and keep everything that made those type of games great. The skill system is a nice touch and creates more versatility on how to approach certain combat situations. Although a real chore to grind characters to max level. Pros: -Great soundtrack. -Cool music. -Cool character personalities. -Nice 2D pixel graphics. -Combat engine is fun and looks and feels slick. Cons: -No Replayability -No new tricks after all missions complete. -Hard to connect to players in co-op. -Right side HUD when join a co-op game? -Hardly any unique equipment for all characters. -No Workshop. -Still kinda easy and some things are kinda cheesy. I struggle giving this game a thumb down for the price tag, but I firmly believe this game has much more potential and I hope to see it move forward in the right direction. P.S. The airplane level is great example of what cheese look like and I hope to never see any levels like that again.Show moreShow less
Gamescom 2018. So i walked through the dark corners of the indie boots not wanting to wait 3 hours to get a glimps of super smash brother or the new battlefield. just wanted to play a game. walk past by all the boots and there in the middle the was one screen with 2 free controllers. So me and a friend of mine took those controllers and played this game called Door kickers: Action Squad. we hitted that fire button and picked one of the 5 classes and loaded up a level. We kicked open the first door and start shooting our way true. open a door and there was a suicide bomber who blew up us 2 we laughed and immediately hit that retry button. After 5 tries of the first level we played we got true the level. Behind us there where 2 other guys wanting to play so we painfully had to let go of our controllers and left the boot with as a goody some cold spring rolls and a card of the game. but we couldnt let the game go out of our mind. next day of gamescom we went back to the boot as we graved for more gameplay. So back to the boot There was the game again with the same springroll goody. We played true the 3 playable levels. Had loads of fun tried all the classes. There were guys waiting for the game but we couldnt let go. A guy from the boot came to us and offered us a challenge and took us to a level you couldnt play and told us if you guys die you need to go. challenge accepted. 1 min in the level we both died and sadly we had to let go of our controller. The guy told us if you want to blame someone for the level design blame me. He is pure evil So we talked to this guy after we played only to figure out that the game is allready in early acces on steam. And that the spring roll goody was actually his colleges lunch.. So the best game for me at Gamescom 2018 was for me Door Kickers: Action Squad Ty guys for realeasing this beauty of a game. And sorry for eating your lunch.Show moreShow less

Was very disappointed with this game. I was hoping for something fun and inventive like broforce. Instead this game is like 80 levels of doing the exact same thing for 8-9 hours straight. I cant remember the last time i've felt a game was this repetitive. All you do is open or kick open doors and then hold down or tap shoot......thats literally the entire game. The objectives dont usually even make sense because instead of rescuing hostages you have to kill everybody as well which makes no sense for someone from SWAT or police, etc. The recoil is horrible and many times the shooting is inconsistent, as i would slowly tap shoot and it would still go all over the place even with a ton of points in recoil. You gain levels and get stars, but i had unlocked all the guns for my first class within the first hour. Theres also a random cutoff at level 17 which is just stupid as i still had many skills not unlocked but couldnt grind for any more meaning beating levels was useless. This encourages you to try to use other operatives but theres is no point as you then have to use worse guns and have no abilities because you havent unlocked anything, and as dying makes you restart the entire level its just a waste of time. Theres many poor design decisions, like how they make most rooms dark so you cant use any planning or strategy, that ducking or jumping doesnt help with accurary or with dodging damage which you can't do, with there being cheap tricks like instant kills dynamite guys right inside doors to rooms, like how you can only gain 1 extra life, etc. There are a few variations sometimes like there being a bomb, but since its usually at the end of the level and in some random spot of one of the many ways to go, you usually have to run out of time 1-2 times and failt to scout the level which is poorly designed. There are targets you have to arrest that shoot at you and you have to shoot to make surrender but if you shoot too many times they die, which can be annoying if they put them with a bunch of other guys shooting you. Their version of upping the difficulty is just making levels way longer and thus you if you die which is super easy to do you have to redo 10-15 min which is just dumb. Every level looks the exact same, theres no story, theres only a few unlockable pieces of equipment. You see all the game in the first hour and then its just grinding the same things over and over with no payoff. If the combat is better it would make more sense, but with most rooms only having 1 way to enter you cant use any tactics because shooting while standing there and being shot. I can imagine its better and more fun in co-op. It isnt a bad game just boring, repetitive, with minimal things to do or unlock, and combat that doesnt even make the grind enjoyable. 5/10Show moreShow less
