“A 3v3 anime spectacle that pairs cel-shaded faithfulness with deep, swap-driven mechanics; competitive Dragon Ball fans should not pass it up”
Our Verdict
If you are ready to spend fifteen or twenty hours just to see why so many outlets handed Dragon Ball FighterZ such high marks, it earns the ticket. The reason is simple. Its two core things, playing great and looking right, are both built genuinely hard. The cel-shaded style is not a skin floating on the surface, and the three-on-three team play is not commotion for its own sake. The two mesh cleanly, and what comes out the other side is a remarkably complete expression of Dragon Ball combat.
Depth that is hidden, not faked
More importantly, it does not disguise itself as deep by piling on systems. It actually buries the depth inside character synergy, swap timing, and the pace of an exchange. You can pick it up fast, and you can keep digging for a very long time. The former secures the first impression; the latter ensures it is not just a brief jolt of excitement. Fun to start. Rewarding to chew on.
That balance is rare. Many fighters force a choice between an approachable surface and a punishing ceiling, and this one quietly refuses the trade. Recognition like its TGA Best Fighting Game win underlines that the craft landed with judges as well as players, not because it stacked features, but because the few it has are tuned with real care and lock together instead of fighting each other.
The hidden depth also explains why the game has aged so gracefully. A title that fakes its complexity tends to be solved quickly, its bag of tricks exhausted in a season. A title that hides real depth in timing, spacing, and synergy keeps generating new conversations for years, because the players themselves keep discovering what the systems always allowed. That is the company this game keeps. It did not buy its longevity with content drops alone; it earned it by building a foundation deep enough that the community could keep mining it long after the credits on any single match.
Who it is for, plainly
Whether it is worth more of your hours depends on what you are after. If you want a strong story and a thick single-player package, it will not return that investment in equal weight. If you want a fighter you can open again and again, study again and again, and pull a fresh jolt of familiar excitement from the camera and the sound every single time, it gets better the longer you stay. There are annoyances, and the boundaries are clear, but the core quality is rock solid.
It is also fair to say who should walk past it. If your evenings are built around long, story-driven solo campaigns and you have little interest in testing yourself against other people, this game will spend most of its best ideas on a door you never open. None of its highlights are designed to land for a purely single-player audience, and no amount of goodwill changes that. There is no shame in that mismatch; it simply means the game and the player want different things, and recognizing it up front saves everyone the disappointment.
So my conclusion is direct. It is not an all-rounder; it is the precise kind. For Dragon Ball fans, especially so. For fighting-game players, more than appealing enough on its own merits. Do not aim your expectations at the wrong target. Aim them correctly, at the matches, the squads, and the spectacle, and the game will get its hooks in fast and refuse to let go for a long, satisfying while.

The ultimate edition does not contain all the content. Several fighters are locked to be sold separately. The distributor does not understand the concept of "ultimate". Edit: For the kids who failed to understand the criticism: it's not about being able to read the description (which, by the way, is pretty bumbling - but it is not the point here), but about the distributor using a word used to indicate the complete and definitive version, to name a version far from complete. Note: If you still want to, buy the FighterZ Edition (includes the same fighters as the "ultimate" version).Show moreShow less
R.I.P Akira Toriyama; creator of Dragon BallShow moreShow less
Great fighting game. I was going to say the BEST Dragonball game, but it's killed by bad marketing direction. They charge way too much money for DLC characters and those DLC just keep on coming one after another after another, at maximum prices...well bad news for you Bandai Namco, i come from a world when games were great, where when i buy a game, i get the full game and if half of my character roster is greyed out, so be it, im not paying you per character. I stand my ground on this one. I have NEVER supported selling individual characters, Lootboxes, gambling in videogames, any of it. So this heavily and negatively impacts my score for this game, as it means a huge chunk of the game is missing. Dragonball FighterZ is capable of a 8/10 with one point being deducted for a poor story and another for lack of the iconic music dragonball is supposed to be known for (the music is ok, but its not dragonball), but OF COOOUUURSE they are getting too greedy... When you factor in the shear amount of greedy bull#### being put in this game's endless DLC's i have to give a final score of: 5/10 - The greed kills the experience dead, tonne of your roster is missing. Dragonball Budokai 3 for PS2 is still after many years, the best. I cannot EVER enjoy the full experience of Fighter Z unless i just keep paying and paying and paying. NO THANKS. I noped out and you have scared this customer away forever and now i have to spread the word to warn other people about your shady practices. You have gone waaay past what is acceptable for monetisation. With all the greed smacking you in the face, it ruins the experience, so even though there is a good game here, i cannot recommend it, if you just want to enjoy the base game, wait until you can find it for £20 ($25) or less and avoid all DLC's. They want £170 ($220-ish) for this game (in full) right now...and i have to stand up and say NO.. NO Bandai Namco, this is wrong and youre damaging the image and brand of Dragonball when you do this to such a beloved franchise. Corperate greed strangles this game's neck, to the point it isnt alive. That's my opinion. Many people enjoy Dragonball Fighter Z, i do too! The fighting system here is top tier excellence, but the rest...really brings down that score and puts it all in perspective. Is the game WORTH IT. To many of you the answer will be yes, but for this old gamer who remembers how good things used to be, it's a no. You know its a problem when the main character at the start of the anime, base Goku, is a DLC. It's time to ring the bell of shame on Bandai Namco... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrDSqODtEFMShow moreShow less

Ultimate Edition doesn't come with all the DLC thanks a lot. Don't you think you've collected enough money for once?Show moreShow less
Rest in Peace Akira Toriyama. I am 27, almost 28...been watching Dragon Ball since I was 6-7 years old on toonami. Not only is DB my favorite, it also opened more doors for more animes. Helped me through bad times when I was addicted to pills (4 years clean now). I don't care what society expects of me, but DB and anime in general will always be apart of my life and made me who I am today. Call it corny, its just pure love I had for this anime. Sleep in heavenly peace and thank you so much for everything you did for me and millions of others, if not billions. I don't really have much family, no friends or social media...so I thought this would be the best place to post this. Raise your hands high and lets give Akira our energy for the last time for massive spirit bomb! <3Show moreShow less
Good game but i cant see Android 21's oil soaked assShow moreShow less
The gameplay is pretty good, but what's more important is the number of Gokus. If you look at the math, there's actually many more Gokus in this game than one might expect. Of course, we've got the three main Gokus, but there's also Vegito, who is 0.5 Gokus due to being a fusion with Vegeta. Then, we have Gohan, who is half Goku and half Chi-Chi, making him also 0.5 Gokus, so since we have two of him, this brings our current total to 4.5 Gokus. We've also got Gotenks. Gotenks is 0.25 Gokus, because he is both a child and a fusion. Now our total is 4.75. There's also Goku Black. While he has the mind of Zamasu, his body is 100% Goku, making him count as one Goku nonetheless. Fused Zamasu is 50% Goku Black, making him also 0.5 Gokus. Next, Bardock. Goku is 50% Bardock, which in turn means that Bardock is 200% Goku, making him two whole Gokus. This brings our total to 8.25 Gokus. Perfect Cell and Android 21 are kinda weird, but according to a commenter Perfect Cell is 0.166 Gokus, and Android 21 is 0.151 Gokus, which brings us to a total of 8.567 Gokus. With the FighterZ Pass 2 giving us GT Goku and SSB Gogeta, we now have another one and a half Gokus, but the new pass also brings us the Great Saiyaman as part of Videl's moveset, which is another half Goku, bringing the current total number of Gokus to 10.567. And with FighterZ Pass 3 we have been given yet another Goku, this time in his Ultra Instinct form, as well as another fusion in the form of SSJ4 Gogeta, which brings the total to 12.067.Show moreShow less
