Non re-bindable controls, LMAO Stuttering everywhere, feels sluggish, can't even mouse click half the menu items A clear shoddy console port. But hey, you can choose your pronoun!!!! EA does it once againShow moreShow less
After almost 200 hours of play, I'm ready to make a few comments about the game. First, I really enjoy the "full season" of career mode, with the major championships included. This is where this game beats 2K23. I especially like that the "competition" seems a little tougher in the major championships. I am a gamer in my 70's and my coordination is not that of a younger player, so I play in Normal 3-click mode. I still make the occasional bad shot due to the variability in the possible landing zones built into the game. In my opinion, this makes it like real world golf because there are so many factors out of your control. The one complaint I have is that I often have huge lag issues. I have tried tweaking video settings, turning off any programs running in the background on my PC, etc. Nothing helps. Sometimes, if I quit the game and restart it, I can get better results. This is not something I ever experience with 2K23, whose graphics are much better, in my opinion. Over all, I would give EA Sports PGA Tour a B-, based solely on the presence of lag so much of the time.Show moreShow less
I'm not even saying this to be funny. Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2005 is literally better than this game and has more features. How do you make a game 17 years ago and it has features this one doesn't. It runs smoother, the swing animations are much cleaner, oh and the game isn't a broken mess! It's sad we live in a world where the quality of product is second to the amount of money it will gross in sales and now MICRO-TRANSACTIONS!!!! AAA game's are no longer made by passionate studios. And if they started passionate the morons in the suits collecting 1.5 million dollars a year and contributing nothing to game direction and know nothing about games themselves will rob them of it. This is a terrible port and an embarrassment to EA, not that they haven't lost credibility 8 years ago or anything. The gaming industry needs a AAA game strike. Stop lining these idiots pockets and they may stop making ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on a yearly basis. 2/10Show moreShow less
OK... this is the most glass half full review I've ever felt compelled to write. Firstly, I've played virtual golf since Leaderboard Golf on the c64; as a genre its offered me more chill time and frustration than every walking simulator and Soulslike put together. I was so enthused to see this come out with real-life millimetric scanning of courses, and close to natural modelling of frictional resistance and ball behaviour as currently possible. The TV style voiceover presentation is also top notch, and its also a beauty. To an extent. Look closer and you will see the PS2 level of detail characters on select; see their creepy uncanny valley expressions as they celebrate or mourn following their shots, and drop the crowd detail down to (even) HIGH from ultra and it becomes a hideous stroll through Dante's Inferno, with gormless microwave melted plastic crowds screaming from the sidelines. So, as much as possible, to maintain your sense of immersion, even with limited returns, you are going to ramp those details up to "Ultra", and then BOOM... the lag. Lag on your swing. The one thing you really need to have a good handle on in virtual golf, and the damn simulator gives you lag and stuttering. With a 3080 in 1440p. Given that you are fighting the lack of a definitive "up and down" on the sticks of an Xbox controller, drives and approach shots are often a matter of bestimating just where the damn thing will end up. And then, maybe most realistically of the entire world of golf simulators, is the RNG of the in-game systems. You are given a huge biscuit of potential landing zones when targeting, and it takes concerted practice and grinding of your golfer's stats to narrow that down to manageable levels, while also tackling changing windspeed, and often chaotic turf behaviour. Actually realistic? Yes. Screamworthy? Yes. The best result I've had is after taking a couple of the in-game lessons, switching to Arcade mode and then drinking a shedload of wine, I managed to shoot a 9 under round. I almost did a victory lap of my house. Inebriated and on arcade mode, the lag and stuttering were ignorable as your blurry reaction time enables a focus more on the rhythm of the hit; decisions from the gut (rather than any kind of logic) about wind and turf, and putting from the hips, not the shoulders. Drunk, listening to loud techno, and on the lowest difficulty, the game became predictable and glorious. I had a blast. So, take the glass half full, add the other half with wine, and welcome to the best drunken golfer simulator of all time. If you don't drink, wait for a few months until the patching removes the necessity for beer (or wine) goggles, and we can hope that the optimisation the title so dearly needs is applied to it. It'll be excellent if they do. And what is it about modern AAA titles outsourcing all of their QA to players? Well, its in the game.Show moreShow less
Ill start by saying I read a lot of the reviews and chose to trust the positive ones. I chose wrong. Very saddened by this game as it had so much potential. EA clearly put the effort in to make a true golf simulator with the allure of the PGA Majors - making the courses beautiful and true to to form. HOWEVER - you boot up this clunky nightmare and are reminded why EA has the reputation it does. Terrible performance - choppy at its best - I would have played more to give it a chance but it crashed after the AI's Tee Shot both times - If this was a beta or hell even $15 I wouldn't bat an eye - but its $70 for me to troubleshoot ? Pass on this - I also truly find it unlikely EA will fix it considering they were okay putting this out there. I refunded immediately :(Show moreShow less
I played the hell out of Tiger Woods 2002/3/4, so I really wanted to believe that EA could give us a great golf game with PGA Tour 2023. Despite being tempted to buy it on release, I waited. But, after seeing that half a dozen patches have come out since its release (I’m writing this shortly after patch 6 on the 10th of August) I jumped in, tentatively. Am I happy I did? Yes… and no. I've got a relatively good PC with a 3070ti graphics card, and in my short play time to date (just 8 hours over 4-5 days) have only had one crash/hang (on my first day of playing). Otherwise, the game has been running solidly for me for the last few days. Touch wood. It’s sad to read so many other reports of frequent crashes. Anyway, from my first few days with the game there have been a lot of good points: + Some of these courses are just HOLY COW LOOK AT THAT SCENERY … GORGEOUS! … especially on an ultra-wide monitor. On several occasions I’ve found myself just gazing at the scenery, looking into the setting sun and the hazy, cinematic golden-hour light, simply in awe. Hats off to the environment artists — of the few courses I’ve played (by no means all of them, yet) there have been numerous moments of forgetting you’re in a golf game, as the landscapes steal the show. And no, I HAVEN’T EVEN PLAYED AUGUSTA YET (I can’t wait, but am forcing myself to wait until I get better, because I hear it’s… quite the challenge!) + The tournaments also, for the most part, FEEL good to play, with lots of people in the crowd and some nice immersive audio reactions (with only a few exceptions when I’ve hit what I know is a frankly unbelievable shot, to which no-one reacts). Yes, the crowd animations are still pretty janky (will anyone EVER nail this aspect of a sports game?) but there’s enough of a crowd for it to be somewhat believable. + The commentators are also… good. Mostly. They'll say some nice things, fairly naturally, and I haven't felt like turning them off yet. But there have been several occasions where they’ve said that I’ve gone disappointingly long and right of the pin when I’m pin-high left – immaterial things like that. And with that, let’s get to the not-so-good. Overall, there are lots of -- though minor -- important, immersion-breaking glitches. I've noticed plenty of them fairly frequently, even in only 8 hours of play. - When putting, as the ball comes to a stop, it spins randomly and aggressively. At the end of EVERY putt. - If your good putt finishes “2ft" past the hole, you'll apparently have 4-5ft when your golfer stands over the return putt. It's like the game is - for some unknown reason - adding 50% to the distance remaining THAT IT JUST TOLD YOU. - When putting, the power meter remains visible as the ball makes its way to the hole and the camera pans around/forward following the putt, otherwise quite cinematically. - If you're in a green-side bunker, below the level of the green, there's no way (apparently) to lift the camera UP to get a helpful overhead view. The default 'zoomed-in view' button gives you a SLIGHTLY MORE zoomed-in view of … the side of the &*$% bunker, leaving you to 'guess' where you want to land the ball. Having a 'free camera' option to let you see what you actually need/want to see would make this part of the game a LOT nicer. - Where are the replays? Are they even a thing in this amazing, cinematic-looking game? WHY THE HELL NOT? I can only imagine the great (cinematic) clips I’d be able to capture for posterity, or to share with friends AND ALSO PROMOTE THIS GAME… but nope, there’s seemingly no option for replays. Makes me yearn for Tiger Woods 2002/3/4! Seriously EA, you solved this problem 20 years ago! - Auto-tap-ins (you can choose to enable if you’re within 1, 2 or 3ft) force you to watch an unnecessarily slow animation of your golfer getting ready to PUTT THE DAMN BALL INTO THE HOLE ALREADY! Defeating the purpose of moving on to the next hole slightly faster than tapping the ball in yourself. - While on this subject, auto-tap-ins almost always ONLY JUST FALL IN THE SIDE OF THE HOLE - from inches away! Dear God, it’s infuriating and insulting to the high-level golfer I’m striving to be. - WHY IS NAVIGATING THIS GAME’S USER INTERFACE LIKE TRYING TO ICE-SKATE IN HELL!? I’ve encountered numerous UI glitches/bugs including not being able to select the first sub-skill from e.g. ‘Driving’ which has 3 sub-skills. Until I switch to using a mouse. So at least I can work around it. But damn, basic stuff like this is infuriating! - If you’ve stuck with me this far… please take heed and turn OFF the ‘hole previews’, which are on by default, lest you have to sit through several multi-second ‘transitions’ that show you the sponsor’s logo at least 3 times before you’re able to play the next hole. Seeing full-screen sponsors logos for several seconds 54 times per round (216 times every tournament) gets old REAL fast. In a similar vein, when will this garbage of “levelling up” stop? At the end of every round you’re bombarded with “Golfer level up! (boom! whizz!) You’ve got X points (boom! sizzle!) you’re now level X, you get X things! (boom! whoosh!) …repeat ad nauseum. How about making a game, and an experience, that’s actually a joy to play? Oh, and I have to PAY MORE REAL MONEY for ‘points’ to buy even just a basic cap for my player, NONE of which are given to me when I jumped through your clunky 1990s UI and horribly limited set of 1990s options to create my golfer? Shame on you, EA. (Ahem) well, this “review” got a bit long didn’t it? I’ll post it anyway, in the hope it helps you decide whether you’re up for battling lots of these issues to experience what is, looking only at the positives, a fairly good golf game… Only “fairly good,” mind you. Not great. Yet. PGA TOUR really could be great (big asterisk: if EA do the right thing… not exactly a reliable prediction of the future based on the recent past). As it is now though, it’s only “great” every so often (again, take a bow, environment artists!) before it almost instantly brings you crashing back to earth with one of its infuriating “death by a thousand cuts” glitches. Fingers crossed EA continues to roll out more patches to fix a lot of those cuts. Because when I’m halfway down the 18th fairway at golden hour with the sun sinking hazily over the clubhouse into the distant horizon, I can forget I’m just as far away from actually making the cut in a virtual golf tournament… but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.Show moreShow less
WARNING: THE GAME FORCES YOU TO USE A CONTROLLER for its main core experience: online tournaments. Just so you understand: the game has difficulty settings between arcade, pro, tour and sim. And to earn credits, which you need to buy specs to upgrade your clubs, the best way is to take part in tournaments. But, all tournaments except arcade (which has the lowest ridic payouts) are closed for anyone who uses keyboard and mouse. Specs are extremely important to purchase for your clubs as they give you a massive boost in accuracy, power, control, etc... And they can only be bought with credits, which you do not earn at all in your single player career, only in challenges, quests (super grindy) and tournaments. For some stupendous reason, specs are also shuffling in the store, iirc every 2 days. This means, the slower you earn credits, the more likely that legendary spec you have been grinding for is gone by the time you reached your goal. Sure, it may or may not come back one day, but what could possibly be more frustrating. Compare a best ranking on sim tournament: 50.000 to 80.0000 credits. In comparison maybe like 1.000 or sometimes a bit more for arcade. A club spec (epic or legendary) will be around 15-20k. And ofc, it is not like you have endless arcade tournaments, they change, and you have usually only one, which often does not even pay credits, but tickets, which you need for other tournaments like weekly and season, etc., which you then cannot partake in anyway. It is really unfair and frustrating that all tournaments except arcade require a controller to take part - without a warning before you purchase. I am a mouse and keyboard guy, I hate controllers, I bought the game on PC. Nothing says "this game requires a controller to play" before you buy it. Even when you load it the first time and it advises you to play with a controller "for the best experience" - it does not tell you that you actually REQUIRE a controller for its core experience, tournaments. It is really sad, I like this game, and common, try the 3 click swing on sim, and it is imo just as hard as controller stick input, if not harder to click on those tiny hitboxes. I would even understand this requirement on sim tournaments, but even on pro?! Pro basically is arcade... This means effectively I cannot play any meaningful tournaments, only arcade. Well done, EA. Because having to click that tiny clickspot in sim is really an unfair advantage. not. Here is an idea, EA: how about you add mouse swing then? Almost as if there was a middle ground to suit both... Outside of that, how about you split controller and non controller tournament entry lists? But no, let us exclude rather everyone who does not play with a controller. This ofc also means that earning credits for us non controller guys is limited to grinding challenges really. Which can be fun, but only to a limited extent, and it is way, way, waaaay more grinding than playing tournaments to win credits. If only one could earn credits also, dunno, maybe ... the career? But no, let us only grant you XP for that and stash the big payouts away in online tournaments, which I cannot even join. Way to exclude your WASD customers on PC. Great job EA in closing off the main part of the game for us non-controller folks. As much as I like the game (and outside of that it really is amazing), until this changes, I cannot give a thumbs up. I wish I knew this from the get go, instead I spent two weeks doing challenges and upgrading my golfer here and there, and low and behold, when I felt ready for tournaments, there came the surprise... Please change this EA or add mouse swing, or let us earn credits also in career mode. Outside of that you would think that forcing a difficulty setting should be enough to even the field. Because beyond the fact that I need to grind for credits, I would also like to compete against folks online on harder difficulty than arcade. No one is asking to not have controller only tournaments. Just to let 3 click players also have online tournaments of all difficulty levels. Failing that, at the very least warn your customers that the core part of online is closed off for anyone who does not use a controller - to not do that on a game available for PC, borders on false advertisement. It majorly, majorly s u c k s.Show moreShow less
Honest review from someone who's been playing golf videogames since NES Open Tournament in early 90s, when I was about 5, and real golf since the age of 10, being currently a scratch player. TLDR: On the course, when you're playing, it's the best golf game ever made. On the other hand.... Menu, activities, online mode.... a disaster that I sincerely hope they will rework. PROs: - When you are in the course, this is the most incredible golf experience I've ever witnessed in a videogame, and I run it at lowest settings save for best antialiasing and 3D grass (game suggestion and it works perfectly with high fps) There is a threedimensional sensation that is uncomparable to other games. You feel the course, the elevations, the atmosphere, the ground. Oh.... and the ball physics when it rolls and bounces. Just amazing. - Great swings types, all look very real even DeChambeau's single plane swing that you can even adopt for your own character. - Courses are phenomenal. They have been laser scanned and I wil not say anything but... amazing. - Eventhough many people claim this game to be more arcadey, while 2k's take on golf are more simulations, I strongly disagree with this. I own 2k21 and played much of it, not 2k23. Still, the point is this: real golf HAS an "RNG". This game, specially played in SIM mode, is the best simulation of golf. The problem with 2ks series is that to be great at the game, you need to master a finger movement. It's not much about golf... First, it's about your finger. 2k is either too easy or too hard. Not so much fun... With EA's instead, it's way easier than 2k to flick the stick correctly, not requiring you to train and exercise on that movement for hours. The game instead creates a difficulty which resembles real golf, by forcing every shot to have an "oval-form spread", which basically mean that in every shot you could hit it a bit stronger, a bit weaker, send it a bit right, or left EVEN if you have a good impact\swing. That's real golf. And then, just like in real golf you can train and get better, in this game your character gets better and that "oval spread" applied to every shot can be made smaller and smaller, to create a better consistency in your accuracy. That's real golf! How does this actually translates into the gameplay? It's simple: You cannot go for the pin at every shot. You cannot do 300 yards surgeon shots to land the ball in a 2 yards radius. Sure, you may try! But it's a risk shot! You need to play with strategy. I found that this strategy play was totally neglected in 2k, as you either suck at the game because you can't hit it straight, or you're too good to always hit it perfectly straight, wherever you want. Also, 2k just lets you do simple math to calculate both elevation and wind.... that's ridiculous, if you ask me. There is not a formula to calculate exactly how much elevation impacts the shot, because every club creates a different arc of the flight of the ball. Ea's take on it doesnt allow you that. The game highly respects the arc that the ball creates while in flight, so if you're hitting a sand wedge or a 4iron from 40feet above the pin, you can't just aim 40feet shorter with both clubs. It won't work, because it wouldnt work in real life. Ea also enables wind gusts.... and THAT'S what makes golf really unique. None can predict wind gusts, and they are always there, even if in minimal proportions. So... Ea's take on golf adds surprise, which is an absolute PILLAR of this beautiful game. - Skills customization is great. SKILLS. Character customization... will be on the cons. I find skill customization great because you can shape your character how you want. You want to be a Morikawa-like great iron player, who won't send it 350y but will be putting his birdie from 8feet after his 5 iron, or you want to be a DeChambeau-like who will mostly have an 8 iron in all par 4s, but spend most of his points on brute force so he wont be able to have as much middle to short game accuracy? You need to find your game, and spend the skill points wisely. And no worries, re-spec is very cheap to do at any time. Then there are Perks, which additionally shape your character's performance, by attaching them to drivers, woods, irons etc.. and customize them even further. Great! Ok..... now let's go with.. The CONs: - I play Tour or Sim difficulties, my friends play on Arcade or Pro. Well.... be prepared to laugh... or cry? There is not a way to let couch-local player to use different swing mechanics. We either all play on Tour, Sim, Arcade or Pro. Silly? To say the least...and being polite... - I can NOT play online mode in couch play. Me and my friends cannot challenge other people online from the same screen. And they even add a permanent online mode for 2vs2... no surprise top players in the world have like....30 wins overall... in almost a year? None is able to play it. Now the worst part.. - There are no online lobbies. To play online, you must click it, be forced to stay in that menu windows, and WAIT. There is a span of 4 hours daily where people play, which is from about 6PM to 10PM CET. And we only play the match play mode, the other two modes are permanently desert. I cannot understand why they don't allow us to create lobbies just like in old Tiger Woods games. It's just incredible for me to believe they want you to just wait to find a random opponent. Of course you cant find games! Most people will leave after 30 seconds waiting. With lobbies it would be much easier to keep people playing. - No chat online. I mean... golf is a very social game. Why you don't let us communicate in any way other than making 360° with the camera to congratulate the opponent for his amazing shot... and losing our already limited time to finish the hole? - Character customization is not good at all. Few faces, hair..... you can't set height but I understand that for a swing reason. But then..... EA's asks your character....preferred pronouns.... I mean... are...you....serious...... - The classic good sponsors mechanics during career have been swapped for this weird....bad...boring..."challenge" category, which is good just for its tutorial part. The rest (80%) are not so appealing parts of the game. The idea is cool, I can enjoy the parts where you replay situations that happened in real past events. But sponsorships with these "missions"? No.... I don't really see it that way. Sponsorship has to be kept and held over time.... With this mechanic you can play for one whole day TaylorMade sponsorships missions... finish them, and not play them ever again. - Menu is laggy and doesnt respond correctly with a gamepad. Yes...the game is meant to be played with a gamepad, yet the menu is best to be navigated with the mouse. I found this to be evident in the Tournament sections, when you try to move among the 4 possible ones. Sometimes the game shows incorrect rankings. VERDICT: If you like golf or have enjoyed golf games in the past, you have to buy it. It's very plain and simple. All the problems the game gives you while NOT playing golf, are totally erased by the incredible experience that is playing golf and living the nature, and physics, on the course. This game has no rivals in that regard. In every other scenario then you may want to save up your money, or at least buy it when it's on sale. It wouldn't be worth your money if you paid it full price and don't have a strong passion for real golf, or even just golf videogames. So there you have it. I hope this review will help you and eventually bring you in the game, growing the playerbase. I also hope EA will fix the problems and make this a game worth to be put in the olympus, next to TW series 2005-08, a couple Mario Golf and few others. But again... when you're in the course.... it's just an amazing experience.Show moreShow less
My first impression is utter disappointment. Golfer customisation is very limited. Only like 20 different faces and hairstyles? This is definitely going to bring that stereotype feeling online where every 3rd golfer looks the same. For game play mechanics it is totally a MUST HAVE controller game. It is like a copy/paste game from PlayStation to PC. You can't even change your own key bindings. That after the keys on the keyboard is chosen super random. I mean, it's 2023. Who aims with arrows tbh??? The normal would be to use w,a,s,d to aim and to swing with mouse... Simple as that and you get it wrong XDD. You don't even use the mouse to swing? Instead press END and HOME with a swing meter that is awkward. How on earth do they get this wrong ? Was there even any PC gamer who looked at it before release to see how awkward this is? Get a controller else don't buy. Took years to make and we get a game that is rushed on PC ? Tiger woods 2005 had better play mechanics with keyboard and mouse. Really mind boggling. The positive is the commentary. The commentary is better than ever before as well as crowds. Also I like that FPS is unlocked on PC. This game will totally be a waste in 30FPS. I feel for console players XD. Once again it is 2023 and they think 30fps is good enough? EA going down the drain once again. Overall it's a shame for a game that millions of people have waited for over 10 years. Let's hope for a huge update or anything to make the PC experience better. I will be asking for a refund and so should you. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Try it and then just ask for a refund if you don't belive me. It's a great ad for 2K to finish with. Enjoy your day champion!Show moreShow less
