**EARLY ACCESS REVIEW ** It saddens me to write this but I want to save people some money now, and suggest they spend it on this game at full release [23-Jan-2025]. The entire early access is less than 2 hours. The game is stunning, and it's obvious the devs has fine-tuned it from the first iteration, which is amazing. Outside of a couple of very minor spelling or word mix-ups on items everything is perfect. This is demo-sized and should be free if they are wanting feedback from the masses. Will gladly pay full price on full release but save your money today.Show moreShow less
A more than worthy sequel. Quick updated thoughts after 100% Normal. + The best map in a metroidvania. Clean with everything in the UI labelled and available without extra steps to access. Move around and zoom in/out with sticks instead of mapping those functions to buttons needlessly. Custom map markers that can all be removed at once with a button hold though with how well this map is made you don't ever need any map markers, I never used any and had clarity of layout and what was in each area. Besides fog where you have not been and grey in areas with something still to be done there's larger sections around pieces of the map that gives another layer of clarity to what sections of certain parts of the map that have not been fully explored. Every time you unlock another ability backtracking have never been this smooth, new sections to unlock for currency, path to a new area etc. and they are almost always convenient thanks to how the world is designed, you get a large scope but the feel of a much smaller map. Because the map is so well done it's combined with the world design to make exploration and backtracking feel intuitive like it's never been. + Soundtrack is excellent. It's a dark and dire world that seems to almost be out of life yet there's a yearning in the haunting melodies that creates a sensation of hope and beauty in other areas portraying a dark and depraved history or the eerie to almost invasive mechanical noises of the Biological Research Facility to the regal sounding Sorcerer's Academy. Every area has music that speaks volumes before you learn about it from the story or is simply a great piece. + Movement and combat feels tight. You have plenty of options with eight summons that each have three abilities of which you can pick four at a time to use. From standard weapon attacks to a dashing punch, bouncing saw blades, homing projectiles that fires automatically etc. Four attuner arts at a time as well that serve as an ultimate attack once you've charged them from attacking enemies. Using your jumps, dashes, abilities, arts, relics, equipment and if you choose two different parries, one from an ability with three versions and one that has many different versions from equipment it gives you a lot of options. + A ton of air mobility. Double-jump and air-dash are given early which combined with air attacks that have a short hover per attack and you get some extreme air mobility since you can renew attacks between each air action so [jump> combo> dash> combo> jump> combo> dash> combo] and there's other abilities and actions that will give you more options like Garm's Ascent which is a charged super-jump and Lunar Manifestation which is a dashing-slash that can be aimed horizontally upwards and more. + No contact damage. + There's much detail in the layered backgrounds and use of colours and effects that make the stages come to life through a variety of areas. + Dialogue and the story is paced to give enough context while quickly letting you keep exploring. + It tells you how long ago you saved when you quit. + Fast travel from anywhere and it's quick. - There's slight stutter. - Damage output felt lacking for bosses, while you die very quickly. - There's one really bad run back.Show moreShow less
Despite the fantastic QoL additions to the map, combat, and RPG mechanics, I just... don't enjoy Magnolia. At all. Meanwhile, I enjoyed almost every moment of Lilies. Magnolia lacks all the elements that made Lilies amazing - the beautifully crafted atmosphere, the emotional OST, the stunning visuals, and the meaningful boss battles that give you a sense of actual progression without the game telling you through text like this one does. You could say that I enjoyed the experience of Lilies more than anything, and perhaps I should've tempered my expectations to not anticipate the same from Magnolia. Clearly, the focus was on gameplay polish, expanding the map, and character interactions in Magnolia, and admittedly, I do enjoy reading the extra dialogue. The rest... just isn't my cup of tea, and that's alright. Do I think it's a good game? Of course. But I can't leave a positive review when trying to progress this game feels like a chore rather than a journey.Show moreShow less
01/26/2025 Full release review Dark souls metroidvania with Jojo stands part 2: electric boogaloo Just finished the game on hard for my first (blind) playthrough, got 100% on all achievements and got all (?) endings. Story is mysterious and patchy (as with the first game) but compelling. Beautiful scenery and gorgeous enthralling music will keep this IP always close to my heart. The only nitpick I have is that the characters aren't voiced and some events clearly call for more SFX (during tuning, but the game just renders the bright emission of light in silence). More SFX feedback on weapon hit would've been better as well. Early Access Review Dark souls metroidvania with Jojo stands part 2: electric boogaloo Instant purchase for me, probably the first one as soon as it dropped. CAVEAT EMPTOR: Ender Magnolia is in Early Access -- it can be completed in 2 to 3 hours. If you can't wait for full release, play Ender Lilies first! Ender Lilies has always had a special place in my heart because everything worked so well. The dark foreboding setting, the beautiful music, the triumph of innocent children wanting to save the world, but accomplishing the bitter-sweet end instead. The stories of our youth, when we dreamed we could accomplish great things. I have no doubt the devs would recapture the magic yet again. I've done three bosses and it captures all the beauty in tragedy of the first game. Good people driven mad by a power beyond understanding, as your character defeats them you reveal their memories and grant them final redemption. The setting takes a slightly more colorful palette than the first game, but still portrays a world in decay. The music (Mili is back!) fits this perfectly, with theme and motiff encapsulating sadness in soft piano melodies. The game is in early access, but I have no doubt the devs will finish the game from 6 months - 1 year like the first game. One apparent change that they introduced into the game is the mini-map feature, it now displays what the level looks like instead of long hollow rectangles. Really helps in backtracking and looks great. I hope more metroidvania games adopt this design.Show moreShow less
Loved the first one (100%ed it) and got pretty far into this one before I ran out of motivation. Initial areas (Lower Stratum) are good, but once you get into the midgame (Middle Stratum) the game turns into a major slog. All the bosses I did were fun (if a bit samey in same cases) but I found that zone traversal eventually became so tedious as to be actively off-putting. Story and atmosphere feel a bit weaker here too. I was very invested in Lilies' story right from the start but here I found myself struggling to get invested in Magnolia's story or characters. I think the fragmentary "story told through flashbacks" worked very well for the kind of story Lilies was trying to tell, but Magnolia is juggling a lot more plot and characters, and maybe needed a slightly different approach. I wanted to love this one as much as I loved Lilies but I came away feeling a little disappointed. If you don't mind a little bit of tedium I'd upgrade this to a soft "recommended."Show moreShow less
This is so much more player-friendly than some other metroidvanias. For example: + No loss of currency on death + No corpse runs + Save points next to boss rooms (no runbacks) + Four difficulty modes + Difficulty sliders and options for all players + Pause menu option to return to last save point + Boss health bars + Plentiful rewards + Map: Free from the start, auto fills on discovery + Map: Full, overlay, mini + Map shows completed / incomplete areas + Fast travel from anywhere + All achievements obtainable in one run It's also a really good game!Show moreShow less
I really enjoyed the first game, but this was a miss for me. All of the elements are there, but it somehow just feels soulless. Bosses aren't fun, level design is bland, normal enemies are simple, story is opaque, and the whole doesn't transcend the sum of its parts.Show moreShow less
Peak like the previous game. 0 glitches or bugs discovered. OST, like the previous game is so good. Finished the game and my opinions still stand. Flawless 21:9 screen for gameplay, cutscenes are 16:9 like expected. Bosses are very strong while your own damage output is fairly low(imo) I hate the rats Loved the ending. Getting the (true) ending is'nt hard to get like in ender lilies. Wished for a longer epilogue but maybe ever in a sequel. Would insta buy the next game from Adglobe/Live Wire.Show moreShow less
Beautiful art, animation, music, character design, and level design all blighted by what feels like an incomplete story that ended too abruptly. The first game, Ender Lilies, had a terrific story and everything was easy to follow. The mystery unraveled slowly and satisfyingly with each boss defeated and collectible item obtained, It finished with a truly beautiful (True Ending) conclusion. Ender Magnolia really ruined the Ender world's lore with its plot. Ender Magnolia's story seems at odds with itself, unsure of exactly where it's going and seems to steer in all directions. It has a very cop-out True Ending and a very short (4 seconds of cutscenes) and unsatisfying not-True Ending. It almost seems like the devs were too ambitious, wanting to craft a Game of Thrones story, until they realized their budget and had to make cuts to all the subplots and also the main plot. It's evident the devs bit off more than they can chew. There's even evidence of this in the game design. The majority of your high-tier skill upgrades are thrown at you one after the other at the 85% mark of the game. At about 95-98% of the game, you'll get a final skill set that seems like it was added in because the devs probably planned for the story to continue way further but needed to quickly needed to end the game. Ultimately, this game pales in comparison to Ender Lilies, and it's a shame because there could have been such a great story had they either finished making the game or cut down on a lot of the nonsensical subplots in trying to chase that Game of Thrones plot complexity that I don't think Ender Lilies fans even wanted.Show moreShow less
