Everything Seth said was true. Having played this since early access, I was surprised he covered this game. Problem is, I'm certain he stated working on that review before AMPLITUDE released their "final patch". Forget Awakening, the base game is in the worst state it has ever been. While the most easily reproduced bug is "Darth Paul" which prevents the editing of system improvements past Level 2, the game-breaking bug is the infinite pending. With Darth Paul, you can at least finish a game, albeit somewhat gimped. Infinite pending currently has ZERO work-around. Saving and reloading used to work but no longer. You can even go back several turns prior via the autosave function just to have the same pending bug on the same turn. This makes games impossible to complete and makes the time spent leading up feel completely wasted. My theory is the A-team is off working on HUMANKIND leaving the... not-so-talented back to screw up a good thing. That "final patch" was not needed and has done more harm than good. They would've been better served fixing that god awful DLC that they outsourced. Don't buy this. Even on sale. It's broken. When they fix it, this review will disappear. If they don't, I wouldn't recommend buying HUMANKIND either. I was as pumped for that as I was for ES2. But after this fiasco, my faith in AMPLITUDE has all but dwindled. Tragic.Show moreShow less

So I decided to pick Endless Space 2 up in a recent sale, having really enjoyed the original. I'd heard it had some issues and the devs were tending to it, but I thought it had been long enough as well that anything serious would be done. Unfortunately I feel I was wrong in that hope. So to start with the positives, Endless Space 2 feels as if a AAA company took ES1 and spent 2 years focusing on nothing but pure immersion. The game looks spectacular and the old narrative feeling is back. Gameplay is relatively similar, though combat has been overhauled to some extent, with tactics being a once-a-battle thing now and it's decided before-hand not mid-battle. The new combat is great by the way. The new land battles helps add to the flavor of the game, though sometimes I feel it doesn't make sense, such as when you want 30% of your army to be aircraft and you end up with loadouts you can't control where you might have 80 infantry, 30 tanks, and 2 aircraft. From there we get onto some more disappointing points. Firstly is performance. A game of Endless Space 2 is meant to run about 300 turns. If you play on slow, about 450 turns. But with my own specs of an i7-6700K, GTX 1080Ti and 16GB RAM, on top of having the game on an SSD, performance becomes sloppy inside 150 turns with ease. Battles start having random stutters and turns themselves slow down to some extent (Though I will give it credit for not being anywhere near as bad as Firaxis' trademark mega waits for Civilization turns) We come to the two points now that I feel are the most critical in why I'm unfortunately disappointed so far: 1: The AI. The AI feels incomplete. It mocks you every few turns like clockwork, simply tells you what it's going to do in a few turns (Like going to war), and its ability to build up its own empire is...strange at best. The AI manages to expand rapidly at the start. I'm not the most experienced player but on normal I definitely felt the AI outpaced me by miles in the early-game periods. However that quickly changes as the AI gets bogged down over nothing and thus doing nothing. An AI can go to war with you and simply never try to attack, or when they do it's for the one system they seem to want and that's it, or they just want to abduct people for 30 turns. From a diplomacy standpoint the AI is full-on idiotic. An AI declares war on you due to having the opportunistic trait and you are at war already, but you take 10 systems off of them and they will still simply refuse peacedeals point blank when the war is about to wipe them out the game. It simply feels like the AI barely takes anything into account, and ultimately after about 100+ turns I feel like the AI just falls apart entirely. On a side note, if you get an AI ally, they will go to war without saying anything, then insult you for not helping every 3-4 turns, but there is simply no way to be asked to join a war or offer, you just have to know who they are at war with and do it manually. It might work but it's impractical in this day-in-age for a 4X game. For the second point, we have UI and events. I enjoy the atmosphere of Endless Space and I like the overall gameplay, but I swear that I have *never* seen a game with such blatant disregard for player input as Endless Space 2. The standard 4X events are practically full-screen on this game, and they will pop up almost randomly. Sometimes a start-of-turn event will popup 10-15 seconds after you are navigating some other menu. There is no coherency between menu panels because you will get an option to go see something, click it, and then it has simply replaced it with a new event to go see something else. Ultimately the events could outspam a dedicated spambot on reddit, with the game basically mandating that you try and manually turn off as many of the more pointless events as possible so you can feel sane when you click end-turn. Update: So I've put a bit more time in, another 5-6 hours and found a few new issues. Some petty, some outrageous: - The AI shutting its borders whilst you blockade them appears to despawn your blockading fleet from the game, but it keeps it in your lists and keeps charging you for it, you effectively lose the ships permanently. If this is otherwise, the game is not saying. (So I just lost about 1.2M dust worth of ship value and it's now draining 9,000 manpower a turn at random. Seems to be 100% broken) -AI's late-game tactics appear to be trying to spam one planet with 5-6 bad fleets so that they can keep it permanently guarded and keep getting land battles in, even though they cannot win a single space battle -Even trying to work out what treaties you have with everyone is a serious hassle. You might as well write them down because unless you are allowed to cancel it right now, you can't see what treaties are there. -Performance has become cripplingly low in terms of turn timers and just trying to get battles to load, this is by turn 200-210 on a 300-turn game on a large map with 8 players... -Nothing and I mean *nothing* scales properly in this game. I make 9,000 dust a turn but the AI offers me peace and 39 dust per turn. At the start of my latest game, with 3 systems in my empire, a minor system asked me to build 18 buildings in 15 turns...suffice to say that was impossible. -Lastly, I won a supremacy game and it turned around and told me to go to the score screen, only to sit on the loading menu for 3 minutes and never load it at all. End of Update In summary, I want to reiterate that overall I do like the game. I feel the best way to describe Endless Space 2 is it feels like a AAA company made it, but it's as if they've never done anything even remotely similar to this game before. I enjoy the game for only as long as the events can be kept at bay (Which they often can't) and the AI stays competent(which again it often doesn't). I'm going to have to say that even on sale, you might be disappointed with the state it is in, despite how visually appealing it is and how great the core gameplay itself still is too. I would check back and see if the devs have been able to alleviate at least the AI in the future. After all the stuff I posted in the update section, I have to say this is an even greater disappointment than I thought. It's a shame because Endless Space 1 is great. You are better off just playing the original, as this sequel doesn't deserve to be in the same series.Show moreShow less
Installed. Strategy. Cool, I got this. Starts game. Can't understand game at all. Quits. Watches YouTube video on how to play game. Starts game. 47 hours later... Lost 6 lbs. Girlfriend location unknown. 17 missed calls. Legs atrophied. Severe carpal tunnel. Epic Sophon carrier with lasers wrecking everything in sight. Worth it. Would destroy life in the short-term again.Show moreShow less
I don't know why I feel compelled to review the games in the "Endless" series. I suppose it's because I really want them to work. I keep buying them, and probably still will, hoping for the day when these games finally align with what I want from a 4x game. Sadly, Endless Space 2 just doesn't tickle me. As a huge fan of older games like Birth of the Federation, and newer games like Stellaris, I find myself genuinely bored by this game. Everything LOOKS very pretty, and as far as aesthetics are concerned, the game hits all the right marks. Once you dig in deeper though, everything starts to feel strangely arbitrary and divorced from the story players are telling with their factions. I'm the kind of person who likes the narrative experience that 4x and grand strategy games can deliver: the fantasy of crafting new histories and world-building lore’s. But so much of Endless Space's mechanics defy the stories it tries to tell. I started by playing the tree race, ready to play an ecological peace-loving people, but after only a handful of turns into the game, the militarist faction of the trees won the election... which one would think would have pretty massive consequences! But nothing happened. The peace-loving trees had turned on a dime, and yet no part of the game seemed crafted to support that sudden shift in policy. It took me a significant amount of time to even figure out why it had happened, and even then I found the reason spurious. Why would the construction of a few warships built to fend off pirates alter the entire baseline outlook of a populous? It felt arbitrary. There are other examples, but that was the first one that stood out to me. The worst sin however, is the combat. Games like Stellaris don't mess around with pretense: whoever has the biggest stack wins, and the player only needs to involve themselves up until the point of engagement. After that, they need merely watch. They don't even have to do that if they wish. The battles in Stellaris are pretty enough to do the job, but your expectations aren't very high to begin with, and you’re not forced to interrupt your regular play in order to deal with them. In Endless Space 2, the game forces you to make decisions about every combat with a popup window. At first this excited me: in Birth of the Federation the combat was all about small numbers of large ships engaging with each other, while players would give simple rock-paper-scissors orders every few seconds that could affect the performance of each vessel as the battles dragged on. Endless Space 2 hints at that kind of deep tactical dynamic by giving you choices of tactics cards that appear to alter the trajectory of different ships in your fleets. The final impression that this GUI sets up almost feels like a Rainbow Six pre-battle-planning session. It made me excited for what I might see when I pressed play! But it’s squandered, because the battles themselves are dull slug-fests that don’t reflect the exciting possibilities presented in the planning phase. Ships warp in, then trade weapons fire for a few minutes while they plod forward (even the smaller class ships move slowly) on a simple trajectory. It’s dull to watch, and after a few tries with various different sized fleets, it left me wishing there was a way to auto-resolve encounters without the computer interrupting me whenever fleets met each other. Even the tactics cards themselves don’t feel like they have a significant impact on the fight. The feedback for why certain ships do better or worse against others simply isn’t there. Overall, the game is slick in presentation, but lacking in the sort of depth I’m looking for. I’m sure many will enjoy it, but if I hadn’t already put nine hours into the game (at the time of writing this review), I’d return it in a heartbeat. It’s not my bag, and I wouldn’t recommend it.Show moreShow less

What an absolute piece of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hot garbage this game has become. The most recent patch took absolutely all fun out of this game. I have nearly 6k hours in it because it was my go-to game for chilling out and relaxing. Instead they made the AI super aggressive and built auto-cheats into the game. - No where near a given civilization? Have no fear, they're automatically aggressive with you and will attack you on site. - About to build that one per game major structure and improve your standing? You'll literally watch the game increase your time to build until the AI magically beats you to finishing. - Have multiple fleets attacking a system? Have said system to zero defenses and zero manpower? Fear not! The AI will magically be able to repel every ground attack you make regardless until you are out of manpower! Totally not kidding: I had 30k manpower and the system I was attacking had zero and I still suffered major defeats round over round until I was out of manpower. - Want to be strategic and well rounded with your fleet maneuvers? Want to make strong offensive and defensive fleet builds? Doesn't matter! The AI, despite being seriously outgunned and outmaneuvered will still destroy half of your fleet! Went from a serious strategic and tactical thinking game to none of that mattering because the AI will just magically outperform you regardless of your position, strategy, fleet strength, system strength, resources, tactics, etc., etc., etc.Show moreShow less

I really want to recommend this; I really really do; but the cons outweigh the pro's. Please note; I am presenting the facts and pushing my bias and enjoyment for t he game to the side. A summery (TL;DR) will be at the bottom. The game is beautiful, music is amazing, and the game play is very simple and fun; However.-- 1) Single player is decent, but dull after you've played it once or twice. TL:DR: "the bots are bad" There's even multiple mods trying to improve how the bots function; but a game shouldn't RELY on mods to make it good. Bots always function the same way every single play through, on every single difficulty. always warmonger, always backstabbing through peace; and to determining on "score"-- which anyone will tell you-- "score" is not indicative of anything at all in endless space. its an arbitrary number that doesn't bode a proper representation of a players standing amidst his or her competitors. The bots provide no dynamic game play; as its very very predictable. When they eventually declare war on you, and you turn it around with minimal effort, then they just span truces and flee every fight; even if its a fair battle; or one in their favor. They just dig their own graves every time. Anyone who's played the game for 25 minutes realizes that the AI is uninteresting. As I said before; Why else is there multiple "True endless difficulty" mods out there? A game shouldn't rely on mods to make it interesting, and this is a bit of a stumbling block for the game. I should also note; the bots are easily exploitable and abuse-able. You can literally get war pressure on them; offer a truce for one of their systems; once they accept it, go back to war and repeat. Last play through; I was literally able to cheese my way through all of the Craver's systems.. Why the hell is that a thing? why are the bots so mindlessly predictable and abuse-able... 2) Multiplayer breaks- a lot. anywhere past turn 30; and you will De-sync constantly. and when I say "constantly" I mean that-- Every single turn is a de-sync. This is an issue across the board. everywhere you look, since the games launch; people are reporting this, and minimal has been done to accommodate, or resolve the issue. A de-sync, in an of itself can corrupt save data, and will make simple, mundane tasks take longer and longer. Something like a simple 1 fighter vs 1 fighter battle calculation; that usually takes 2 seconds, instead starts to take upwards of an hour through de-syncs. Their a major problem, especially when they happen every turn. they make multiplayer borderline unplayable. Your best bet is to just shrug through it, save often; and only play with friends. 3) This game is borderline unplayable with any AMD card; as it will visually freeze at random. when it freezes; the game will still be running fine beneath this visual freeze but you will be unable to see anything. there is no known solution to this. Trying to close the game in any way; even alt-F4 or using end-task, will cause the process to hang in steam, and your PC will lock up key features, including the start menu and restart functions. The only way out is to pull the plug on your PC and restart manually. I cannot complete a game of endless without this happening at least 10 times; at best; and its insanely rare that the game DOES shut down properly when I do end-task/alf-F4 the program. (When I say rare; I mean about 1 in every 70 times; if not more.) This is a serous issue for AMD users. --now; I know idiots are gonna say "then don't use AMD". please; give me the money so I can get something else. Oh; whats that? You don't have the money? That makes 2 of us. Think before you speak please <3 These issues; especially #2 and #3; are beyond ridiculous for a $40 game; and while I personally love the game; I cannot recommend anyone waste their time and money with such a product. I don't like having to say that because, as I said, I really do enjoy the game ---When it actually works---. but that's few and far between. AMPLITUDE Studios; Please fix #2 and #3. I know more people have issues with those then me. Your game will get the praise it deserves when its actually taken care of. Summary:: What's good about it? - visually appealing; especially in space battles. - relatively easy; once you get the hang of it. - lots of empires to play with; you can also customize your own - mod compatible (Workshop) - Good for casual play when it runs smoothly (see below) What's wrong with it? - Its single player is repetitive and dull - Its multiplayer has huge De-sync issues - AMD users BEWARE! you will have lots of annoying crashes. - a lot to deal with and learn at first (This is a minor issue though. but the rocky start is notable) So; Should you get endless space 2? - Personally; I don't think its worth the $40. The cons outweigh the pro's as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't feel comfortable spending $40; just to crash, freeze, de-sync, and lag... why pay money for that?? I'd pay $40 for a working product; and I feel that anyone with commonsense would agree. Its a shame; the game has so much potential.. Maybe someday, the Dev's at AMPLITUDE Studios will see, and correct that. Its a shame, honestly. This game has a lot of potential. You could even ignore how the bots are; if multiplayer was remotely functional. Its got a lot of things going for it, but as I mentioned before, its multiplayer just doesn't work properly, and the bots are exploitable and boring after you've played the game once or twice. You're welcome to think what you want; But I've presented the facts about the game. you gotta keep in mind; I'm saying this despite of actually liking and enjoying the game (when it works). I'm not throwing my enjoyment or bias into this- This is just how the game is. Those denying things like the de-sync, crashes, or dull bots; clearly haven't spent much time in the game, or are simply too "die-hard" for the game to notice that, like everything, it is flawed. Honestly, that's fine- but facts are facts. This game is not worth $40 in its current state. Hopefully it will be someday-- But its not now. [Edit] I'm shocked that this became the top rated 'most helpful' review for endless space. I thought most people would just get mad at it -- like most of this things comments do -- since it was negative. But; Thank you guys for the up votes. Maybe with enough and a little luck, It'll be brought to AMPLITUDE Studios' Attention; and they'll do more about this, and make the game as great as it deserves to be.Show moreShow less
