I don't know if this game's not for me or what, but I just remember the gameplay not being super engaging and pretty easy. I got the best ending first try and only had to put back time once because the game had a "you can't walk two feet around this rock" moment. I get what the story is trying to say, but without the gameplay to back it up I just felt detached from the message. Frankly if real life animals play like this game then they should survive just fine. And the emotional moments just feel flat for something so short. Hard to feel sorry for a guy who was shooting at me all game. All the cool shots in the trailer? Walking through the desert and swimming through the ocean? Yeah that's essentially just the final cutscene. All the trailers just showed cooler scenarios that you don't actually play while the rest of the game is a walking simulator. So I kinda feel jipped with this game and what it was. Especially with that $30 price tag. If you REALLY want to see this game just watch a video. You'll probably get a better experience. 2/10Show moreShow less
Endling - Extinction is Forever is a short game, similar to the Shelter series. The main goal is to ensure your cubs survival, but with the added intensity of being the last mature female fox on the planet. It features current worldwide issues such as habitat defragmentation, pollution, illegal poaching, but most of all, the greed and selfish nature of the human race that underline all of these problems. The game is tender, heartbreaking, heart-warming and real. It unfortunately released on the same day as Stray, missing out on the attention it deserves. Pros Focuses on real & current environmental issues Simultaneously heartbreaking and heart-warming Finite resources Be solely responsible for the survival of each of the cubs. Cons Very short playtime for a $AU42.95 price tag Story Playing as the last mother fox on Earth, it is up to the player to help the four cubs survive the harsh world. Teach your offspring about the many dangers, what food to eat, how to hunt and many more much needed skills to give them a chance at survival. The most brutal element of the game is the heart wrenching reality it portrays. Watching the natural environments become slowly polluted, burnt down and simply over-used due to the greed of one species is emotionally devastating. Although no words are spoken, there are clear visual signs to interpret about the world., for example, the air is no longer clean, with most humans wearing masks, there are no more fish in the water and prey species become near non-existent. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2839779808 At the beginning of the game, one cub is stolen by a human from the den. This begins a game-long mission to try and retrieve it through following scent trails. I believe this is actually optional, but comprises the main (and only) storyline of the game. I enjoyed the focus being solely on the survival of the cubs (and retrieving the lost cub) and although more plots or optional events may help keep players' interest for longer, I do think this approach results in a forced focus on the decrepit environments and thus highlights the developers' core environmental message, which I see as a positive. Gameplay Shortly after beginning the game, the mother fox gives birth to four utterly adorable offspring. These cubs, full of fluff and adventure are inherently unaware of the dangers that exist outside the safety of the den and their survival solely depends on the player. Gameplay is similar to Shelter, but less linear. You must first find food during the night and bring it back to your babies. Once they get a bit older, they will shadow you and have opportunities to learn new skills, which will also help gather food for their siblings. The main premise is to get back to the den before sunrise, to protect them from harmful predators and ensure they do not starve. I completed the game with no cubs dying and did not find it necessarily difficult, unlike in Shelter where it was quite brutal and unforgiving. Although food is not an infinite resource and live prey species such as rats or pigeons do not continue to respawn (highlighting all creatures struggle for survival), some caution should be made to ensure longevity of the resources. Be warned that Endling is made to evoke emotion and it delivers its poignant message silently, but brilliantly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2840226699 There is a small map that guides players to fast travel locations or events. There are not many special events to witness, but it is a handy addition. There are around 30 nights, and after leaving the den, sometimes there will be a pink scent trail, this will lead to information about the missing cub. I suppose this is optional, but not doing this would result in there being no real aim of the game, besides repeatedly going out to gather food, which would become boring quite quickly. Visuals & Sound Endling has a unique stylised look and features countless hints in its backgrounds to portray the awful state of the environment. With "preserved species" signs crossed out with graffiti, rubbish piling up everywhere and a lack of living creatures. The world is empty and drained. This barren landscape is in complete contrast to the colourful fox family, highlighting the rarity of the species, or any wildlife presence in general. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2840199107 There are no words spoken for the entirety of the game, but there does not need to be. Despite such a bleak landscape, with what seems like every human trying to kill you, there is some good. Endling also showcases the rare but unmistakable kindness that some people possess, those willing to share what little they have with the fox, when no one else will. These moments are highlighted beautifully through the soundtrack, especially the ending. Technical & Stats This game was played using a controller and with the following PC specs.: Intel i5-9400 2.9 GHz 16GB RAM GeForce RTX 2060 6GB 2560x1440 resolution HDD Windows 10 Playtime: Approximately 4.5 hours. The game is noticeably short and I recommend purchasing at a sale if concerned about the cost-hour ratio. Controller Recommended? Yes Replayability value: No, only for achievement hunters. Conclusion Endling is an example of a video game portraying such a relevant and important, yet devastating message. Simply put, I loved this game, and I will remember it for a long time. It is a simple premise, similar to Shelter, but focuses on the hardships of wildlife and their offspring’s survival in a world that humans have destroyed. It is a hefty price tag for a short 4–5-hour playthrough and I recommend it at a sale. That being said, this game deserves more recognition than it has received. If you like animals, care about the environment which you live in and/or like the Shelter series, I highly recommend this underrated title. Endling was NOT the game I thought it would be. Sadly this game missed the mark and could have been so much more. [No spoilers] PROS: I loved the graphics and enjoyed much of the story. I am also a big fan of the message about our impact on the environment. It was not a super easy game and had some challenges. CONS: [Time] Each "day" in the game is WAY TOO SHORT. I understand the short time for a day makes you a little more on edge, and pushes you to plan out your moves. However this game is clearly begging for you to explore the map. The map is pretty large, with a LOT going on. But there is NO TIME to see much of it. (If you played the game already, you know you have to search for items that show you where your lost pup is at. Just searching for those items takes most of a day, then you have to run home.) I really wanted to explore the landscape, see all the critters, and check out what the humans are doing. But there is no time. The game pushes you along and you beat it in about 4 hours max. [Design] The map is terrible.... You have to pull the map open ALL the time. It really sucks you out of the immersion when you have to pull open a MAP! You start to feel connected to the game, and then you get lost and need your fox-GPS.. The map should have been a little mini-map circle in the bottom right. The enemies in the game are really annoying. I understand the humans are a hazard and you need to protect your pups, but several times I got checkmated by being sandwiched between two humans and died. This happened WAY too often. You are stuck walking in a 2D plane, and often a human will be on your left and right... ensuring your death and wasting your time. There are ways to bait the humans off your path, but they seemed horribly ineffective... (The marking posts) TLDR: Fun graphics and good story. No time to explore the world... But it feels like the game is begging you to explore the world.. Many design flaws suck out any immersion. Great $10 game, not full price though. I really wanted this to be an awesome game. :(Show moreShow less

I had fun, for what it's worth. The gameplay was interesting, the story hook was fine, and I have a special soft spot for foxes. But I can't but help feeling like I'm missing something. $30 is a good chunk of cash for what feels like a fluffy walking sim, and as much as I liked being part of it's world, I'd say it's worth $15 at the most. if you really really need this game, it is a fun little romp, but if you ask me I'd just wait for a sale to come in a couple of months.Show moreShow less
I like games that show the cruelty of humanity on our nature. But then the game still needs to have a good portion of gameplay. Endling is one of those games. You play as a mother fox that give birth to 4 cubs. But then the cubs learn to know the many dangers in the wild very fast. The biggest challenge is to feed your cubs on time and get back to your hole when the night starts. But avoid also dangers like traps, humans and other animals. Beside feeding the cubs the mother also need to pet them. For example when they are afraid. After some time, when the cubs get older they receive new skills. This my first gameplay from what I find an interesting and beautiful game: https://youtu.be/RErc8Go7xfEShow moreShow less
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS - I was genuinely excited for this game - I've been following its production for a while, had the release date saved on my phone, etc. And the game was very promising, with a gorgeous art style and interesting premise, but ultimately it was a disappointing experience. The actual mechanics were simple enough, but VERY unforgiving, and extremely frustrating. Navigating the game was difficult to get the hang of, with the map being not all that helpful. The story was basic, and not terribly interesting. The ending felt like a slap in the face - after 4 hours of painstakingly keeping yourself and the cubs alive, you walk in a straight line for what feels like at least 5 minutes, and die fairly graphically of a painful mortal gunshot wound. This game struggled in multiple occasions with finding where the line is between an emotional story, and just being depressing/distressing for shock value. I did not enjoy this game. Final score: 4/10, with all 4 points awarded for the decent visuals.Show moreShow less
I am a very emotionally composed person, so I very rarely cry. But this game... This was the first time I cried because of a video game. Bravo.Show moreShow less
Frustrating, annoying, pointless. The game is pretty and the animals are cute. But that's the only good thing I can say about it. If you are expecting casual gameplay to match the cuteness, you will be sorely disappointed. This is a "survival" game, in that you can randomly bump into stuff that will one-shot kill you. Which will cause you to reload to the last save, which will inevitably involve repeating meaningless tasks to get to where you were before. Which might cause you to die again if you don't know what to do to avoid death. The game does a horrible job of explaining itself to you. Half of the game I didn't even realize there was a map of the world. Not that it's especially necessary. Controls are absolutely miserable. Half of the time they don't respond. You need to somehow position yourself on the exact pixel for certain actions to be activated. Are you expecting a story about humanity's role in causing extinction? You'll get a very tiny sliver of that. It's really a story about hunters killing animals. Hunters are bad. That's the message. The gameplay expresses this message and only this message. There is no complexity and no variety. I got nothing out of this game except a few hours of frustrating gameplay. Skip it, please.Show moreShow less
