I love Fallout, but this is the censored version that removed some parts of the game, including all of the child NPCs. https://tcrf.net/Fallout#Region_Differences A commenter in the thread (BLACKSHEEP on Sep 21, 2014 @ 4:39am) suggested FIXT as a solution for this: http://www.nma-fallout.com/showthread.php?194562 Another commenter on Sep 28, 2019 noted that the URL from 2014 is not current. Here is an updated URL: https://www.nma-fallout.com/resources/fallout-fixt-full-all-fixes-and-mods.8/ Aseptim on May 5th, 2021 suggested the following in a comment: Don't get FIXT, it's very outdated and the 'purist' installation still adds/changes content. If you want a purist installation with bug fixes, download the TeamX patch: https://www.nma-fallout.com/resources/fallout-v-1-3-5-patch-by-teamx-unofficial.53/ If you want restored content, use Fallout et tu (requires you own Fallout 2 as well): https://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallout-et-tu-release-v1-5.218045/Show moreShow less
So... The Original Fallout. I have put a Pros/Cons section at the foot of this review, for those not fond of reading. You know... You know how games used to be good right? When less was better? You know what I mean: like in old horror games when the controls were so terrible that it added to fear factor. Well, this game at first glance is pretty standard. I bought the classics bundle because I admit... I had never played the original fallouts before falling in love with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I wanted to see where these games originated. I played the game for half an hour... I despised it. Absolutely hated it. I quickly became incredibly butthurt I had issues with the controls, having not been too well acquainted with turn based titles before this point. The urge came many months later to retry the game, I thoroughly enjoyed playing for the next 28 hours (I had breaks of course, like... come on). This was a very, very sloppy playthrough. But trudging through the wastelands clinging to dear life... I still had a hell of a time. Anyway, this playthrough ended at the 28 hours (in which I didn't have much to show for, having messed around the whole time) because I half a**ed the 'ending' and left it sat for maybe a couple years? This is when we come to the present. Fallout has ruined my social life this past week... think it was just the past two days. I was oblivious to the outside world the whole time while playing, as if I was temporarily brainwashed. I put in 34 hours to be graced with the end of the game. Also, just finished it about an hour ago, thought I'd write this while I was still in awe. A couple indicators that lead me to believe this playthrough was more successful was: levelling had got me 75HP (Health Points), the Dweller brandished high tech weaponary capable of dealing up to around 450 damage, an untouchable set of T-51b Power Armour and... 63,000 caps. All this could be your's for the low, low price of: [your social life]. You'd expect to have this equipment depending on character build by the end of the game. Well, maybe not the caps - spent too much time earning caps I'd never use. Out of curiosity, once I got there I had a look at the bad ending. I felt so accountable for the events that transpired in game following this that I was actually sorry... until I reloaded a save and completed the game the way I originally intended. Everyone lived happily ever after. Apart from... The Followers of the Apocalypse, The Supermutants/Nightkin, The Regulators, The Children of the Cathedral, The Raiders, of course the many dead and even the Vault Dweller... Now that I think of it, I lied. With most games, spending 34 hours would be reflected upon as a waste but I found it completely worthwhile, if even it was only to learn about the early fallout story. It will at least teach you one thing: to wish luck on anyone who survives complete nuclear world annihilation, cause that'll be the easy part. Pros: -Engaging turn based system -Original and sharp humour balanced perfectly with the feeling of dread -Decent character creation, allowing for a vast range of playstyles -"Maximum Blood" -Many easter eggs (most in form of encounters) - 30+ hour playtime Cons: -Has many downfalls when compared to Fallout 2 (inventory, content, many minor changes, ability to 'push companions' - see the last criticism) -Can be confusing at times -Has a range of minor bugs (I encountered a number of minor bugs but no game- breaking bugs) -And probably the worst: when NPC followers trap you in a building or corner etc And one final thing: You'll probably know this if you've played the game for a bit but something I should probably put in this review is the advice to: "Save Often". You don't know how many times you'll mess up. Maybe you entered a cave and save at the wrong time, following this, some creatures block your exit and you're too weak to fight- I recommend you save in a different slot before you enter new locations. Or it could be as simple as choosing a funny dialogue option and having the receiver of the comment initiate on you - and no... there's no "it was just a prank, bro" options. By far the most likely thing to effect you is what I mentioned in the 'Cons' about being trapped by NPCs. I have found the only ways out of this are to reload or kill the companion - if it's Ian carrying all your loot: you're f***ed, good luck carrying several hundred pounds of loot back to The Hub. Please take note of this, because it can add up to hours of progress being lost if the only save you can use is relatively old. Just saving your hide before you make the mistake! Enjoy this game... and then play the sequel! Also thanks for taking the time to read my review!Show moreShow less
Lame Censored version of a cult classic even on the US Version, They made kids invisible, didnt even remove them just literally made it to where you can't see it so you can still kill them with splash damage on accident and be pick pocketed by them you just can't see or target them. Honestly what is even the point in censoring a game almost 2 decades after it came out and way after the UK and German Versions were censored??? Keep your politics out of our old games Steam.Show moreShow less
Warning: Disliking this game is punishable by death. Methods of execution include being dipped into a vat of goo by a super mutant, sliced and diced by Deathclaws, turned inside out by radiation, and the good old fashioned bullet to the head. Fun! *strolls around post-apocalyptic Southern California while listening to completely unfitting 1950's music.* (Ok, the game is fantastic if that didn't tell you enough. It's shorter than its sequels, but this one is very much worth playing. And if you seriously don't like it, don't get mad at me if the Super Mutants come and burn your house down! :P)Show moreShow less
Love fallout, but would reccomend the GOG version! Its compatible with most modern systems! (I had severe problems getting the steam version to run) Update: Seems the game has been updated to run on modern systems and the gog version has been taken down sadly! ( I will not be testing the steam version as i already bought all the fallout games on GOG) But if the game works on steam then i recomend it wholeheartedly! Fallout 1 and 2 are my favourite games of all time <3Show moreShow less

I have 21,3 hours and most of that time was spent on the rats at the beginning. War never changesShow moreShow less
I like Fallout, and this version is solid with a hi-res patch. HOWEVER, it does remove children in the game. Only realized this after playing several hours. Having the children in the game makes it more interesting, as they run around and and have several funny lines. Trying to catch them so you can steal from them from is a fairly amusing mini game. One of them carries the BB ryder BB gun. Other things are censored as well, such as mention of the word drugs, and the trait graphic associated with it. SMH. I already own the original Fallout disc. I use Steam to save time and trouble installing games. I'm paying for the convienence. Since I had to apply a fix to restore the game as the original creator intended, Steam or Bethesda has dropped the ball here. Digital downloads should be uncut and complete (unless you live in a totalitarian state). Note: I mentioned in this review that I applied a fix to restore content. This is a review of the product offered on Steam, not the game itself.Show moreShow less
