“An American doomsday cult dropped into Montana backcountry, the Seed family anchoring the series' prettiest sandbox and biggest narrative swing”

Our Verdict

The peak of the franchise, flaws included

Far Cry 5's place in history

Drop Far Cry 5 back into the moment it launched and the weight lands fast. It topped the US NPD chart for March 2018, the best-selling game in the country at the time, and still sat seventh for the full year by December. Worldwide it cleared 25 million copies, the best-selling Far Cry ever made, on a series-high Metacritic 85 — the top-rated mainline entry. It was Ubisoft's best seller of the generation and the studio's second-biggest launch ever, trailing only The Division. However you count it, sales or score, this is the high-water mark of the whole IP. The launch numbers were staggering in their own right — north of 300 million dollars in first-week consumer spending, tens of thousands of streamed hours, video views in the hundreds of millions — the kind of cultural footprint a franchise rarely prints twice. That reach matters to the verdict: it means Far Cry 5 is the version of this series most players actually encountered, the one that set expectations for everything that followed. When a sequel directly continues its ending and a spin-off borrows its setting, you're looking at a game that didn't just sell well but anchored the brand's next half-decade. Peaks like that don't happen by accident; they happen when a studio's formula lines up with a setting people genuinely want to live inside.

High-water mark, not high tide of perfection

The Seed family and Hope County

A peak is not a clean sheet. The height rests on Hope County's staged rural sandbox, the Seed family's villain ensemble, and the emergent thrill of a companion squad turning outposts into glorious chaos. The shortfalls sit just as plainly in the forced story interruptions, the deliberately unresolved endings, the threadbare season pass and a loop that wears its Ubisoft DNA on its sleeve. Hold both halves at once and you can actually judge whether it's for you. The temptation is to grade it as a near-miss masterpiece, but that flatters the ambition and ignores how cleanly the execution splits down the middle: everything to do with place, mood and moment-to-moment play soars, while everything to do with structure, pacing and resolution drags. It is, in the truest sense, a game of two scorecards stapled together — and which one you weigh more heavily decides whether you call it an 8 or a 6. Most players land somewhere in between, which is exactly where the aggregate critic consensus settled. The honest read is that Far Cry 5 is a great sandbox wearing a frustrating story, and that you should buy it for the former while making your peace with the latter.

Who it's for, who should pass, and why it can't be copied

The cult and the county

Buy it if you want a handsome, instantly playable open-world sandbox and the joy of watching a single outpost raid spiral into a four-way brawl with your squad, and you can stomach a story that swings too hard. Pass on it if you're chasing tight, well-resolved narrative and can't abide having your exploration cut short by scripted detours — that year's Red Dead Redemption 2, slower to start and heavier in the hand, will feed that hunger far better. On versions, take the standard edition first; the base game is plenty, and the season pass runs thin and poorly reviewed, skippable unless you specifically want that bundled Far Cry 3 Classic. As the fifth mainline entry, this is Ubisoft's open-world recipe pared down to a confident best-of — no reinvented wheel, but a well-oiled one. And the reason it still can't be copied: planting a doomsday cult precisely into America's own rural grain, raising the Seeds as a four-person architecture of sermon and conditioning — Far Cry 5 pulled that off, and no one since has shot the same uncanny take on an American haunting. However it stumbles in the telling, the dread that Hope County and the Father leave behind remains this game's unforgeable signature.
