Whilst playing the game my partner started watching me play. Partner: That looks really nice, but where is everyone? Me: I don't know Partner: But what is the story? Me: I don't know Partner: What are you trying to do? Me: I don't know Partner: Where are you going? Me: I don't know Partner: Well it looks really nice Me: I knowShow moreShow less
While the game is absolutely beautiful with a stunning soundtrack and atmosphere, the story is left for your imagination. Entire game can be played through in under 3 hours, so what is left for your imagination is not a whole lot. Hop into your vehicle and drive on, theres really no challenge in the game; puzzles are short and easy and energy for your vehicle is quite literally everywhere. Some parts of the game really put fire under your ass and immerse you into it, but these parts are really really short and leave you wanting for more, but more wont come. Overall, this game had a whole lot of potential to be really REALLY good but, all of the things that make this game great just fall short and leave you wanting for more. For now, I would not recommend it. Grab it when its on sale.Show moreShow less
The only reason I got the game was because “it was cheap and looked interesting”. Imagine my surprise when immediately I was hit in the face with the superb atmosphere and beautiful scenery, It really sucked me in and kept me into it right up until the moment I finished it, AND left me wanting more! The map design coupled with an above average sound design was great. It was a really thought provoking for me, The game was a big reminder to look at the bigger picture and constantly pushed me towards finding the hidden meaning behind it, Which is a quality I really appreciate in games. The gameplay isn’t anything ground breaking, it’s a puzzle game that consists of light platforming, Management and one or two timed events, Overall not much challenge but totally fun. The game isn’t long and can be completed in 2-3 hours if you really take your time and explore or just take it slow to soak it all in, There are several easy achievements but some require a second playthrough to get, One requires you to play almost 4 playthroughs to get, the game has a speedrun achievement which is not challenging at all, I did manage to speedrun it in around 80 minutes in my second playthrough (under 99 minutes for achievement). Overall I would give this game a solid 8/10, Definitely worth your time IMHO. Just remember, It’s about the journey, Not the destination…!Show moreShow less
I am Disappointed. I really enjoyed this game and I really wish I could give it a positive review. This game had everything for it to be perfect going. I got this game after seeing it briefly in a let's play I absolutely love the style, music, the way the story is presented (visually). You and your machine cross an ocean, collect resources, explore abandoned facilities, encounter some puzzles which even help you repair or upgrade your machine. But as soon as you are fully upgraded and in the flow of the game, eager to find out what comes next, the game just ends. The ending isn't rewarding at all. It's just completely awkward and really feels out of place. I genuinely absolutely hate the way how this game ends, Wich for me is a big reason why I probably won't replay this game again any time soon. And then you realize that you just played 2.9h. Really.... That little? I mean sure it's just a 15€ game but still. It's just way too short. (plus you can even get an achievement for beating the game in less than 99min Wich is not a good sign). I barely even used up all the resources I gathered to power the machine. Another thing I'd wish would have been better is that the distainces between locations are just way to short and just as soon as you managed to reach the maximum speed you crash into the next Location with barely a warning.Show moreShow less
No dogs. No girlfriend. Just a handyman and his earth-roamer. No guns. No bad guys. Just mother nature with her storms and blizzards. No dialogues. No tutorials. Just clever setups that explain themselves. No dazzling visuals. No epic tales. Just a simple, nice-looking game that deserves a positive review.Show moreShow less
This game does a lot right. It does a good job of setting an atmosphere, and the art is very good. However, calling this a "game" is a bit of a stretch. Your progress is linear, and there is no way to "lose". You just keep hitting red buttons until you get to the end. Unfortunetly, the end can be reached in about 3 hours, probably a lot less if you rush it. I understand why so many people like Far: Lone Sails, but I like a little bit more interactivity in my gaming, especially at this price point.Show moreShow less
In FAR: Lone Sails, you spend most of your time driving and managing the many aspects of this..land-boat-car thing, traversing various post-apocalyptic landscapes. Basically there's big red buttons to push, with some minor puzzle solving. I'd personally call this interactive art before I called it a video game, and that's not a bad thing, especially if you want a chill experience with some amazing scenery and music. There's an underlying message to the story (I think), but it's a story without words and highly up to interpretation in my opinion. The game took me about 3 1/2 to 4 hours, with pretty much no replay value from what I've noticed. That being said, I enjoyed myself throughout, and it's a damn fine piece of art that you're in control of. In terms of bugs or other technical issues, I didn't encounter any at all, and it seemed to play as intended the entire time. Overall, I give FAR: Lone Sails an 8/10. I think the game delivered optimally in all aspects, for the type of game that it is. It was short, but just the right amount of gameplay, as I could see a longer version becoming tedious. There's also really no replay value. Once you beat the game, you probably won't bother beating it again unless you "really" love the game. All in all, amazing work here devs! The underlying meaning of this game(in my own interpretation at least) definitely hit a soft spot for me while I was playing too.Show moreShow less
Well, it’s time to against the grain. While the net result is positive, it comes with so many caveats I cannot just slap a “Positive” and move on. I will elaborate below (There will be spoilers) First, the positives: The art is really gorgeous and that, along with the soundtrack set the atmosphere from the start of the game and are the two main pillars of the game. The people in both areas clearly love what they are doing. Zero complaints here. Now, the negatives: The game comes from the breed of “Philosophical/Atmospheric” games that became popular back when Flash was still a hot thing, like Company of Myself, Color my World, Coma and Prior (i.e games where the focus is clearly in the atmosphere and story, and the gameplay itself plays second fiddle at best or is an afterthought at worst). Here there is an effort to go beyond the usual platforming, and I was very curious to know what they would do with that after playing the demo (Given that, if properly integrated into the game, it could potentially add a lot of depth) and unfortunately that effort mostly falls flat. The gameplay loop of getting fuel, feeding it to the engine, releasing steam and very occasionally repairing some subsystems doesn’t go beyond that; and the whole gameplay component feels tacked on to the game, to the extent that it could be outright removed, and the whole experience would barely change. The story, which in this genre should be another core component is (And I’m being generous here) serviceable. It’s not bad by any means; if anything, it’s what I’d have considered as adequate for the previous generation of this genre. There are no written lines in the game and all the storytelling is conveyed through the environment, which is something I’m completely fine with. Problem is…there’s really not that much to tell. The first three quarters of the game are just setting, where you go from locale to locale (That don’t have much to add to the story by themselves), and only in the last quarter you have something remotely resembling plot progression, with the implication that the man who invented to Okomotives is the protagonist’s father, discovering the “battleship” and arriving to the sea, where the game fades to black and that’s it. I can understand the game being light on gameplay to an extent, but the story should have had a more prominent role (Even for a quiet exploration/journey game), and I believe the developers already had the tools at their disposal to do so. My last gripe comes with the price/time relationship. The game took me almost three hours to finish, and that counts getting stuck in a couple of places, stopping religiously to pick each and every item and going slower sometimes to appreciate the details in the background; and the game costs 15 dollars. Granted, quality is not the same as quantity and those are three very atmospheric and hand-crafted hours, so I’m willing to add a multiplier to it, but even then, there are several games with the same pricetag for which I was able to at least get 5-10 times the amount of hours and enjoyed them as well (e.g Alan Wake, Paper’s Please, Planetbase, Stardew Valley or Into the Breach) As a conclusion/TL,DR: If you like atmospheric games, this is a rough gem. While it could certainly be improved upon, most of the right elements of the genre are there. Get it, but wait for a discount.Show moreShow less
Pros ----- +Amazing management game. Focusses on keeping your land boat runnig. +Excellent puzzles. Nothing crazy hard, but nothing too easy. Keeps you thinking. +Excellent difficulty advancement. Teaches you basic mechanics early and slowly builds on them. +$15 +AMAZING Music. Can't stress how atmospheric and wonderful this experience is. +Beautiful art style. Whole thing looks stunning, and the use of background, foreground, and camera zoom tells a wonderful story. +Decent story. Not a lot too it, but the delivery is excellent and moving. Cons ----- -Only 2 hours long. -Protaganist could use more depth. We learn very little about them, and their motivations. This would have helped the ending feel a bit more fulfilling. -Not a lot of replay value. Puzzles are easy enough that unlike similar games (take Braid for example) if I come back a year from now the experience won't be anywhere near as good as the first time. Summary ---------- For $15 USD (the price of a movie ticket) spend the same amount of time in an experience that is more enjoyable than most movies, and support an indy Dev so that they can make more wonderful games like this. >No dogs. No girlfriend. Just a handyman and his earth-roamer. >No guns. No bad guys. Just mother nature with her storms and blizzards. >No dialogues. No tutorials. Just clever setups that explain themselves. >No dazzling visuals. No epic tales. Just a simple, nice-looking game that deserves a positive review. Show moreShow less
Allow me to preface this saying that I by no means consider this a bad game. I would rate a neutral opinion if possible as there are definitely good things about the game to offset my gripes with it. Based on how the store page presented the game, I expected something more similar to Barotrauma or We Need To Go Deeper. This was obviously not the case. The game has a beautiful aesthetic and soundtrack, but is far too on-rails for me to really enjoy it. The words "See how far you can make it." led me to believe that there was some level of difficulty or challenge in the game. But the only way I can see to not finish this game, is to not play it. It's forgiving to the point of being boring. There's no sense of risk at all. Why would I care about success when failure doesn't seem to be possible? It isn't earned or satisfying to solve a puzzle if it isn't hard to do so. I was stuck twice throughout the game, both times it was because the solution was something that would be physically impossible for the character. My immersion was often destroyed due to obvious hand-holding, inconsistent damage to the Okomotive, and the character performing acts that would be physically impossible. I have no idea what happened in the game, this would be fine if I felt like it was a failure on my part. Like I missed something, but I never felt like there was more to be seen than what I saw. I felt like more was presented than ever explained. So when I reached the end of the game, my last thought before the credits was; "What?". TLDR: In my opinion this game would have been better as an animated short or movie. Skip it unless you just want some pretty aesthetics and music with no actual challenge.Show moreShow less
