This is a review about the port, not the game. The game itself is fantastic. I reference Moguri Mod throughout the review - this is a fan made mod that aims to improve the visual quality of the port. The port is a lazy outdated mess: - It's lacking visual FX present in the original, such as the mist in the overworld of the Mist Continent. This was fixed in a patch. - There is no way to restore the original font. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - Dialogue is rendered at a static pace, unlike the original. In the original game, lines of dialogue would show up on screen depending on how fast the character was talking. In this port, there is no distinction. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - There are multiple problems with the battle UI: -- It takes 40% of the screen. Square Enix patched this in the console versions, but the PC version was never patched. This patch was released on PC in an update on the 6th of August 2020. -- It's rendered at what feels like 15fps, making navigation feel extremely clunky. In the original game, all menus were rendered at either 30fps interpolated or 60fps (don't know which one exactly), which made the browsing very fluid. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - All menus are clunky to browse because of the crippling low framerate. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - It's missing sound effects from the original. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - Despite porting the game to Unity, Square couldn't be bothered to re-write the animation code to speed up battle animations independently of buff/debuff tick timers, arguably the original game's biggest problem. This is not fixed by Moguri Mod. - The music in this port is a lower sample version of the original. This is fixed by Moguri Mod. - The backgrounds clash horribly with the new character models. This is fixed by Moguri Mod. The ONLY positive of this version is that you can skip the introduction to every battle. Except not really, because the option doesn't work half the time. Thanks to the Moguri Mod, it is arguable that this version comes close to the original. Regardless of my opinion though, I'm not about to praise Square Enix for a port that the fans patched up. Moguri Mod is the only reason to buy this game on Steam.Show moreShow less
T-they didn't mess it up. I cry tears and rainbows. Already tried it on mobile, so it was easier for me. - Not ported, but adapted. You can click on different places on the field to move your character for example. - Quick save of some sort. Works like a checkpoint system or something like this, not entirely sure. I just turned off the game occasionally without saving and when I turned it back on I just hit "continue" and it placed me on the start of the last screen I've visited. - New screen where you name your character. It looks good, I liked that. - Music. It is just original FF9 score in same quality that PSone version had. Not that botched ff7-ff8 piece of s~. This one is personal, so I put it last. Great game. 100 impressed nobles.Show moreShow less
Preface: the review posted here was my thoughts without the use of Moguri Mod. Moguri Mod fixes all of the issues present and adds beautiful background and nice quality of life tools for completionists such as 100% steal rate. I highly rec. this game if you use Moguri Mod. If you do not plan on installing Moguri Mod, read my review. Shout out to the devs of the mod for finishing this poorly coded piece of ♥♥♥♥. Keep it 100. First, this is not a PC port of a PSX game. This is a PC port of a mobile port of a PSX game. Square Enix didn't even bother having anyone test this port before beginning to sell it. A lot of the problems have come from a recent patch which addressed very few minor bugs, and introduced many more completely gamebreaking bugs. Want to try and enjoy the I Want to be Your Canary mini-game? Sorry, in minigame content your left and right directional inputs now disable themselves after being pressed once. Want to play Tetra Master? Sorry, no left and right inputs allowed. I hope you've saved recently because unless you can play all 5 of your cards in the 4 spots available in the column your cursor is locked into, you'll have to restart your game. Completely wild that not even 10 minutes into the game you're greeted by a massive '♥♥♥♥ you' from the devs. The only way to get the game playable and to look like the renders weren't downscaled to fit on a cellphone, then stretched to your computer monitor is to use Moguri Mod, but the latest update disabled this and now we're waiting on a fix. Square Enix is so incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lazy when it comes to porting the games that made them what they are today. The entire reason they have been able to make so many ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games in recent years and get away with it was because of their classics, the fanbase of which they ♥♥♥♥ on at every opportunity. If your goal is to actually play this game, the only way to right now would be to buy it online for the PSX as it's going for $15 right now from 3rd party sellers, which is $6 cheaper than the Steam version, or to just pirate it and emulate it. Buying this game on Steam is telling Square Enix that this product is acceptable, and it is so very far from that. I will be updating this review to keep track of the amount of bugs I have experienced so far in hopes that one day this port is playable. -Left and Right directional inputs disabling during the sword fight mini-game against Blank -Zidane's weapon model will only render the weapon you have equipped in his right hand when using daggers -Incredibly low frame rate in the overworld -Interact box for jump down ledge in Dali Underground is incredibly small and overlapped by the jump up interact box -Left and Right directional inputs disabling during Tetra Master causing you to reset your game if you begin a match -All backgrounds are downsized from the original causing them to stretch and be very ugly -Left and Right are always disabled on the analog stick, you must use the directional pad to move, even though the analog stick is meant to be fully functional -16 additional hours since the last abrasive bug Moguri Mod has also been updated today. Will be installing shortly and will post back once I've found whether or not it fixes tetra master bugs.Show moreShow less
Hands down the best of the old classics and then some. Back in the day, everyone raved about ff7. ff7 this, ff7 that, omg cloud is the best!!1 I personally found ff7 dull and not as enjoyable as the vast majority put it. It is an okay game but not the best.[i/] Everything in ff9 is incredible to say the least. The game has aged like fine wine and 20+ years later, I still enjoyed a solid play through and trip down memory lane. Graphics: A+ I swear there are times where I can just hangout in an area and enjoy the looks of the game. Everything looked insane back during the ps1 days and it doesn't look half bad today. Background and design: A++ I know i'm not the only one that hung out at the broken bridge between the gates to stare off into the distance. You don't see much at the start of the game since its mostly shrouded in mist but if you come back after your first trip to the Iifa tree, the mist clears up and it literally looks like an art canvas. Aesthetically pleasing to the max. Character development: SSS Can't cheer for one character since you love them all. On a side note, as a kid, who else thought Garnet was a smokin babe? Music: SSSS Memorable soundtracks that have a calming effect on anyone regardless if you're a ♥♥♥♥♥ or a hardened killer. Even Nobuo Uematsu considers the FFIX soundtrack to be his magnum opus and he's worked on the other ff titles. Fights: A A little slow at times with auto haste being near worthless. But I like how they made the items in the game so that you will at times switch back to weaker gear (stat wise) to utilize the negating effects the equipment provides like 100% elemental damage reduction, increased damage, etc. I still got all tingly and giddy when I saw Lindblum Navy rise out of the clouds. For a moment there, I was a kid again. My back pain disappeared, all my worries and stress vanished and I was (for the duration of that cutscene) transported back in time. This game is one of those games i'd be picking on the short list of "if I were to be stuck on an island" or *insert being alone forever on/in isolated area/place* whatever. Disclaimer: Rest assured this is the game we know and love. HOWEVER. The backdrops are the original PS1 quality versions whilst interactable objects and playable characters have been remastered, so there's a jarring disconnect. Some of the NPCs have been remastered, some haven't and I'm getting the distinct feeling they either rushed this, or were really lazy. Different things like ( edit: some ) chests not being animated, or not being layered so they fit in with the backdrop ( e.g. they should be partially concealed but are just pasted on ). I'm getting used to it, but its only because I love this game and haven't played it for ages - and I'm willing to bet that's what they're banking on. It would be pretty cool if someone modded the game with cleaner backdrops, or used some of the fanart out there. Really lazy port, at least visually, in my opinion. EDIT: There are some valid points in the comments here. I'm assuming most of you have played the original, and therefore you'd be happy to agree with my assessment of this title still being 'the game we know and love' - hell, its the reason I impulse bought it on day of release. As a consumer I would want to get all the facts before making a purchase ( especially with all the Early Access / Assassin Creed / Batman controversy ) and I am happy to post what I don't like about a game I am enjoying, so other potential consumers have all the facts.Show moreShow less

The game is awesome. The port is ridiculously awful. Final Fantasy 9 is my favourite of the series and it pains me to don't recommend it. This game is a port from the iOS/Android and, with it, brought the awful UI. I CAN'T SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING DURING BATTLES. The UI uses 40% of the screen !!!! It may be good for a phone screen, but it's not on the PC. Half of the fun are the battles and I can't even see it properly. And there is the double click controller bug that will never be patched, only circumvented around it. "But hey, there are mods that help with that". That's the problem. Square Enix releases a port with many flaws, never even talk about them and we have to wait on the goodwill of modders to fix it. Problems that they should've addressed BEFORE RELEASING THE GAME. As I said, it is a terrific game ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by a ♥♥♥♥ port. It's your choice to buy it or not, but know that it comes with a lot of problems that we'll never see solved by Square Enix.Show moreShow less
This is one of the last games Square made before edgy protagonists dressed in more zippers than an airplane's luggage compartment and bad voice acting took over. If your only experience with Final Fantasy has been with the sci-fi influenced titles like VII, you might be in for a bit of a surprise, but if you played any of the SNES era titles, you'll be in familiar territory. Even during its original release in 2000, FFIX is a throwback to the more traditional Final Fantasy titles and the golden age of JRPGs. To start, FFIX was not ported the same way as FFVII and FFVIII. Those two titles had PC releases back in the day, and the Steam version is just a patched and updated version of their PC releases, complete with localization errors and minor differences from the Playstation titles. FFIX, on the other hand, is a complete port in Unity of the original Playstation release with minor graphical updates to the UI and textures to facilitate both a PC and mobile release. This means that you have the original Playstation audio and controller-friendly input, unlike VII and VIII. The first thing you'll notice about this game is the artwork. Even after 17 years, it has aged remarkably well. I do wish for a few more pixels of resolution in the pre-rendered backgrounds, but the world is still beautiful. Square did touch up some a lot of the textures for the in-game models, and they still blend quite well with the world. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the pre-rendered backgrounds, you're locked into a horrible 4:3 screen ratio, and Square decided to mock us all by adding ridiculous textured bars on either side of the screen to emphasize the fact. After that, the next thing you'll notice is just how slow combat is, particularly at the beginning of the game. It does get better as your characters level up and become faster, but it is definitely an exercise in patience at times. They manage to redeem themselves because the battle mechanics are well-refined. They are simple enough for a child to grasp them but still encourage strategy and experimentation. The characters are very likable. They exhibit a level of character development and growth that you don't typically find in video gaming, which makes the story that much more immersive. Even after years of playing this game, Steiner's little fits and tantrums make me smile, and I still find Vivi's realizations about life and mortality quite moving. The story itself is a little on the weird side. If you were expecting something normal, you shouldn't be playing JRPGs. That being said, it is enjoyable and significantly less convoluted than what you find in some of the other Final Fantasy titles (VIII, anyone?). You'll probably be more weirded out by the fact that Queen Brahne looks like a blue Jabba the Hutt in drag than you will over any particular element of the story. Value-wise, it's a pretty good deal. You can get from start to finish in under twelve hours (it's the only way to get a particular weapon, in fact), but you're more likely to take twenty to thirty hours on your first playthrough, possibly more if you decide to go through all the sidequests, and it's enough fun to play that I've been able to replay it multiple times and enjoy it each time. If you're on the fence about buying the game, just cough up the dough and get it. It's probably better than the other game you were looking at.Show moreShow less
The game is great (I beat it several times on PS1), but I just cannot recommend this downgrade. For some reason, SE removed analog controls (an important function), making this version inferior to the PS1 version. Using an analog stick for 8-way directions feels so clunky. I tried Moguri Mod to fix this issue, but unfortunately, using fan made mods often leads to other issues. Plus, customers should not have to rely on fan made mods to fix the game. SE needs to do a better job with their ports and remasters.Show moreShow less
